For more than eight years Kim and Shelley Waters, pictured,
have continued the tradition of baking fresh hand made pies at their
Toowoomba store.
J.Jaks Family Pies opened its doors in 2010 on the corner of
Hume and Perth Streets after spending several years renovating the
former convenience store.
Owner Kim Waters said when he moved to Toowoomba 15 years
ago, opening another pie shop was always on the agenda.
“Our passion and the reason we wanted to get back into making
pies is because baking fresh food has almost become a lost craft in
today’s mass-produced world, we want to help keep the tradition
alive,” he said.
“We owned a pie shop is Bundaberg for quite a while before we
moved to Toowoomba so we already knew what we were doing
which helped a lot.”
J.Jaks Pies also specialises in slices and cakes, including traditional
apple turnovers and lamingtons for those with a sweet tooth.
Rotary Bowelscan program
Each year from May 1 until June 28 the Rotary Club of Toowoomba
North distributes hundreds of Bowelscan kits across Toowoomba,
Highfields, Kingsthorpe, Oakey, Pittsworth and Millmerran in
their annual Bowelscan program.
The Bowelscan kits can be bought at local pharmacies for $15
which includes the test kit and pathology. This is a great deal and
everyone over 40 should buy a kit. Bowel cancer is 90 per cent curable
if detected early.
Rotary Club of Toowoomba North distribute the Bowelscan kits
as a community service only and the only gain for Rotary is knowing
how many lives this program saves each year. Each year the 400
kits sold in this region alone discovers 100 or so possible positive
results for bowel cancer. It has even saved the life of one of their
own members.
If your pharmacy is not participating in the program, contact
Toowoomba North President, Robyn Jeffery 0414 965 870 to find
out where you can buy a kit or ask your Pharmacy to contact them
and take on some kits to sell.
You’re never too young to be tested and it could save your life
Impressive show history
Toowoomba Region Councillor Geoff McDonald said the history of
the Crows Nest Show should be taught in schools.
Cr McDonald, opening the 115th Crows Nest Show on Saturday, said
he was impressed with the involvement of many people who contributed
to the running of the show, including the volunteers without whom the
show would not function. He praised show society patron Merv McLean
who has been involved with the show for 80 years.
Cr McDonald was so impressed with a history of the Crows Nest
Show, outlined by president May Gossow, that he thought local history
should be taught in schools.
Mrs Gossow talked about the development of the show from 1901 and
the four or five locations on which the show was held.
She said she was the first woman to be president of the show society
after 20 men held the office. • Full show coverage next ssue.
