SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday May 23 2018 19 Backyard Critters HORNCASTLE ARENA June 29 - July 1 10AM - 5PM TICKETS ONLINE: starhomeshow.kiwi Invite native moths onto your patch Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at http://naturewatch.org.nz/projects/backyardbiodiversity-bugs-in-lincoln THE LARVAE of many native moth species have a very narrow range of hosts, so if you plant a diverse range of native plants as I do, you attract and support a diverse range of insects. Planting a grove of natives creates dense leaf litter for additional species such as the slender owlet moth, Rhapsa scotosialis, whose larvae feed on recently fallen leaves and moss. This endemic moth is one of the more common species in native forests, so to have it in my backyard in Lincoln is indeed satisfying. These attractive moths are triangular in shape when resting and are 14-19mm long. Moth wing patterns can be quite variable but this species usually has pale wing tips and distinctive squiggles on the forewings. This moth family are often called ‘snout moths’ due to their pointed palps, and males are distinguished by their large feather-like antennae. The underside of the male forewings have scent glands concealed in a fold and are used during courtship. So, if you would like to attract more of our 1400 endemic moth species to your backyard, try planting some new native species in your garden.
