WFF 2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 3

A MESSAGE FROM
THE PRESIDENT & CEO
In 2025, when the CEOs of major companies
are as likely to be women as men, and women
are promoted at the same rates as men, we will
overhear industry leaders say, “Things really
started to change back in 2017.”
That is the vision and opportunity that drives
everything we do at Women’s Foodservice
Forum (WFF) and propels the tireless
commitment of our Board and dedicated staff.
It was the driving force throughout a very busy
and productive year as the WFF Board laid the
groundwork to enhance our ability to drive
change across the industry by first refining and
reinvigorating our own mission.
With a clear strategy and shared mission, we
reached out to the world’s most influential food
companies to engage them in unprecedented
collaboration on accelerating women’s
advancement. Our industry’s first participation
in the 2017 Women in the Workplace Study
conducted by McKinsey & Company and
LeanIn.org provided benchmark data on the
state of women in the industry and marked
a critical turning point in our history.
We are deeply grateful to the 32 Convening
Companies that were the first to commit to
gaining the insights needed for the Food Industry
to pave new paths of opportunity for women.
For everything we tackled and accomplished in
2017, increasing opportunity for women at work
and equipping the Food Industry with a valuable
new source of talent was at the heart of it.
We are indebted to the visionary leaders helping
us drive that agenda at the helm of WFF:
The deep commitment the Food Industry
has made to advancing women is about to
unfold in ways many of us had only dreamed
of even just a few years ago. This is the time
contribution and potential of women in our
THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Food is . . . well, fill in the blank. It is fun,
comforting, an avenue to adventure, a reflection
of culture, an expression of love, the source of
nourishment, a multibillion dollar business . . . it
is also complicated and becoming ever more so.
Today’s Food Industry faces increasingly
demanding and diverse consumers, growing
competition, hyperpaced innovation cycles,
rising concerns about sustainability and health,
increasing costs and the growing opportunity
and challenge of technology and ecommerce.
Layered on this complex operating environment
is the most acute talent shortage since the
Great Recession. Almost half (46%) of U.S.
employers reported difficulties filling jobs due
to lack of available talent in 2016 according
to the The ManpowerGroup Talent Shortage
Survey. The talent crisis is hitting the Food
Industry even harder with 71% of respondents
in the “accommodation, food service and retail/
wholesale trade” sector reporting difficulty
recruiting for full-time positions.
The Food Industry is projected to grow through
2024, but it is no secret that a key to realizing
that potential is getting the right people on
board. More than three-quarters of CEOs in a
global survey by Pricewaterhouse Coopers cited
availability of skills as the single biggest threat
to their business. They voiced special concerns
about finding candidates strong on adaptability,
problem-solving, collaboration and creativity.
WE BELIEVE WOMEN ARE THE ANSWER
Attracting and recruiting talented women to a
Food Industry prepared to empower them to
achieve will enable the industry to win the war
for talent and drive better business results. That
is why we spent 2017 collaborating with the
industry to pave new paths to progress.
We believe in limitless
opportunities for all women and
a Food Industry where talented
women and men thrive.
2017 KEY
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
CREATED 2018-2020
ASPIRATIONAL STRATEGY
The Executive Committee of the WFF Board
drove a significant and in-depth process to
dissect our vision and mission and reinvigorate
it to ensure it provides the strategic direction
needed to expand WFF’s contribution to women
in the Food Industry. Our refined vision and
mission are:
WFF VISION
Gender equity for Food
Industry leaders
WFF MISSION
Accelerate the advancement
of women leaders in the
Food Industry
We distilled our new approach into a purpose
statement that will help shape future
communications. We developed the following:
We believe in limitless
opportunities for all women.
One of the most exciting outcomes of the
Board’s strategic visioning process is our 2018-
2020 Aspirational Strategy. The strategy calls on
WFF to act more boldly to expand our impact
on the industry and to drive our own growth
which will further expand our impact. A critical
element of that strategy is deep engagement of
CEOs around gender equity and gaining their
commitment to close the gender gap in the
Food Industry. This is a top priority and will be
realized through personal outreach, education
around the business case for gender equity and
public and private engagement and support.
The three imperatives articulated in our 2018-
2020 strategy will guide our decision-making at
every step of the way:
• Achieve a critical mass of senior decision
makers and organizations that actively
advance women leaders in the Food Industry.
• Drive a pipeline of prepared women leaders
advancing in the Food Industry.
• Create an industry-recognized Gender Equity
Index to track year-over-year progress.
8 | WFF 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A key component of this
effort has been securing outside
expertise to assess our capacity in
several key functional areas and to develop
best practices moving forward. Toward that end,
WFF retained a seasoned executive to complete
an audit of WFF’s technology needs and lay
the groundwork for improved analytics and
platform support.
This individual will continue to serve on a
consultant basis and work closely with the WFF
Senior Leadership Team in 2018 to ensure the
appropriate technology is in place to identify,
track and measure the metrics that will most
accurately capture progress toward goals.
This will include creating a more robust analytics
platform to better track member participation
with WFF and its impact on career success.
2017 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
BUILT AND ARTICULATED
THE CASE FOR GENDER EQUITY
Bringing together the expertise of the WFF
Board, Senior Leadership Team and external
consultants in concert with deep engagement
with contemporary research, WFF focused
throughout the year on building and articulating
the case for gender equity.
We understand the power of educating decision
makers with the often-surprising facts about the
current state of women’s progress at work, and
then demonstrating how growing this valuable
talent resource is critical to business success.
We have defined our understanding of gender
equity at work as meaning that all team
members enjoy the same opportunities and
rewards regardless of gender. We have drawn
from and documented some of the extensive
research findings on the impact of gender equity
on countries, companies and individuals.
The story continues, however, with extensive
evidence that driving gender equity drives
bottom line business performance. That
companies that lead in gender diversity
outperform their peers. And how, on average,
companies with the highest percentages of
women board directors outperform those with
the least on return on equity, return on sales
and return on invested capital.
It is a good story. A strong, impactful, inspiring
story. And one that needs to be told more boldly,
more frequently, and to more leaders who
will make change happen. WFF will tell
the story, share the facts and
LEAD THE WAY to change.
We have begun to use that evidence base
to tell the story of today’s women at work.
We share the tough facts of how women,
even those starting their careers today, are
promoted less often and paid less than their
male counterparts.
2017 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
LEAD THE WAY TO GENDER EQUITY:
COLLABORATION, DATA, SOLUTIONS
Because it is difficult to tap into women’s
potential until we understand the obstacles to
progress, WFF reached out to the industry in
search of pioneers. Ultimately, we convened 32
forward-thinking food companies to participate
for the first time in the 2017 Women in the
Workplace Study conducted by McKinsey &
Company and LeanIn.org.
This effort represents unprecedented
collaboration within the industry and a
galvanized commitment to accelerate the
pace of change. The CEOs from some of our
Convening Companies say it best.
We believe a gender diverse
workforce can drive differentiated
performance. We know we need the
full power of talent available to us to
navigate what’s ahead.
Denny Marie Post
CEO of Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews
At Coca-Cola, we know the success
of our business depends on
having gender diversity across our
organization and talented women in
all roles, especially senior leadership
roles. We’re proud to be a part
of WFF’s LEAD THE WAY initiative
and the Women in the Workplace
Study. Working together, we’ll be
able to focus our collective efforts
on promoting gender equality and
advancing the careers of women.
James Quincey
President & CEO of The Coca-Cola Company
We understand the development of
female leaders is critical at all levels.
We have an opportunity to make a
larger scale impact by joining forces
with other industry leaders so I’m
honored to join WFF in LEADING THE
WAY to gender equity.
Wyman Roberts
CEO & President of Brinker International
12 | WFF 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

At Jamba, it was really important
that we participate in the Women in
the Workplace Study. If we’re going to
be on this journey together and we’re
going to lead as an industry, and as
an industry we’re going to lead other
industries, it’s important for all of
us that we continue to learn how to
be better every day. Gender equity
is just a common-sense approach to
winning the war for talent.
David Pace
CEO & President of Jamba Juice
The overall 2017 Women in the Workplace Study
draws on data from 222 companies employing
more than 12 million people, as well as a survey
of more than 70,000 employees and a series of
qualitative interviews.

LEAD THE WAY TO GENDER EQUITY:
COLLABORATION, DATA, SOLUTIONS
An accurate snapshot of the industry
McKinsey has found that one of the most
powerful reasons for the lack of progress is
collective blind spots around diversity. Many
employees, McKinsey’s research shows, think
women are well represented in leadership when
only a few actually occupy senior roles.
In addition, many men do not fully grasp the
barriers that hold women back at work and
are, therefore, less committed to gender
equity and feel less urgency for change. In a
nutshell, we cannot solve problems we do not
fully see or understand.
That is one reason that the leadership of
our convening Food Industry CEOs and their
organizations is truly groundbreaking.
Their participation in the 2017 Women in
the Workplace Study has resulted in the first
industry-specific benchmarks about women’s
progress broken out by food operators,
manufacturers and distributors.
Best summarized by visionary International
Foodservice Distributors Association (IFDA) Board
Member and President of McLane Foodservice,
Inc. Tom Zatina, “The continued engagement of
our Convening Companies and the industry
champions who join them will transform
these new insights and data points into
initiatives that will change the face of
leadership in the Food Industry.”

Deep insights by organization
Our relationship with McKinsey has proven
incredibly valuable as we now not only have
industry-specific data but the Convening
Companies are equipped with organizationspecific
results about their talent pipeline,
advancement and human resource opportunities.
Throughout 2018, our Convening Companies
will study the unique insights they gained
from participating in the Study and will
develop strategic plans to accelerate women’s
advancement in their organizations.
In 2018, we will grow the number of
participating Food Industry companies
substantially. To learn more about participating
in the Women in the Workplace study contact
Tim Johnson, WFF Vice President of Human
Resources and Organizational Effectiveness, at
tjohnson@wff.org. Food Industry results will be
released in late fall.
WFF out in front
WFF will continue to spearhead our industry’s
participation in the Women in the Workplace
Study and create follow-up initiatives to
operationalize key findings. A critical success
factor will remain extensive engagement with
CEOs to drive commitment around gender
equity and needed culture change. WFF will
also serve as a thought partner for CEOs
and companies implementing gender equity
agendas. Specifically, we are supporting WFF
Member Companies by:
• Equipping leaders with both the data
and tools needed to appreciate fully the
business advantages of increasing gender
equity, and to advance a realistic agenda
for accelerating progress.
• Developing leaders in critical areas,
including unconscious bias, to support
companies and executives in changing
ingrained corporate policies and practices
related to advancing women.
• Providing strategic connections that engage
the industry and individuals to champion
one another and share best practices.
2017 KEY ACCOMPLISHMENTS
EXPANDED WFF’S VISIBILITY AND THOUGHT
LEADERSHIP IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY
WFF hosted and drove multiple educational and
networking events in 2017 and expanded its
outreach to more powerfully share our message
of gender equity and prepare women to realize
more of their potential.
SEVERAL HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:
The 2017 Annual Leadership Development
Conference in Orlando, Florida brought
emerging leaders to senior executives together
to learn, grow and network. Highlights included
futurist Edie Weiner, base jumper Ellen Brennan
(the world’s fastest woman), personal finance
guru Suze Orman, extensive peer networking
and the first participants in the new Future
Leaders Connect program.
Fifteen students from James Madison
University’s (JMU) Hart School of Hospitality,
Sport and Recreation Management engaged
with industry leaders and learned about the
myriad career paths in the Food Industry during
Conference as part of the inaugural class of
WFF Future Leaders Connect. The new program
was inspired by California Pizza Kitchen (CPK)
Executive Chairman and CEO G.J. Hart, and his
wife, Heather, along with CPK’s Vice President
of People and Field Operations and WFF Board
Member, Julie Juvera.
Our targeted Leadership Development
Workshops (LDWs) brought WFF into 12 major
markets to engage new audiences and build new
connections with additional companies touching
the food ecosystem. Nearly two-thirds of LDW
participants were attending a WFF event for the
first time. More than 200 volunteers across the
markets also helped drive local engagement
and forged new connections with additional
organizations in the food ecosystem.
WFF partnered with Facebook to launch
online Lean In Circles with partner companies
around the nation. Lean In Circles are small
groups of peers that meet regularly to engage
with and support one another and help
women step outside their comfort zones
and grow through adult learning and peer
mentorship. The WFF Lean In Chapter has more
than 40 Circles and 225 members. Monthly
communications are sent from WFF staff to the
Circles to support sharing of topic ideas, Circle
outcomes and best practices.
As part of an overall effort to raise the visibility
of WFF and increase brand awareness, late
in 2017, we refocused social media efforts with
stronger attention toward LinkedIn, the social
channel for professional networking. This
included increased WFF messaging and LinkedIn
18 | WFF 2017 ANNUAL REPORT

ad campaigns that drove an 8% increase in
followers. We will build on this growth in 2018.
We also re-imagined our CEO Connections and
CEO Insights e-newsletters to serve as valuable
sources of thought leadership focused on
building understanding of our gender equity
imperative and providing robust content
around career development education. We will
extend our use of this content in 2018 through
placement in additional vehicles, including the
WFF blog and sites such as LinkedIn.
A Membership Needs Assessment focused on
gaining feedback around learning and education
needs was sent to both member and nonmembers
late in 2017 for use in 2018 planning.
As part of our efforts to expand our reach with
Partner Companies, we strengthened our Core
Ambassador Network contacts by creating
five key liaison support areas and ensuring that
all ambassadors are actively connected to one
of those areas. As 2017 drew to a close, threequarters
of previously unassigned ambassadors
had been connected to one of the five key
network areas: Advancement (HR/Training),
Communications, Diversity & Inclusion, Field
Operations, and Women’s Networks.
WFF was on the road and in the air with an
expanded presence and participation in key
industry events. This included:
• WFF CEO & President Hattie Hill moderating
a panel at the Global Restaurant Leadership
Conference (GRLC) in Dubai.
• Participation in the International Foodservice
Manufacturers Association (IFMA) President’s
Conference where we announced the new
WFF/IFMA Women in Manufacturing Award.
• Sponsorship of the educational session
“Multi-Generation Intelligence: A Necessary
Tool for Everyday Leaders” at the National
Restaurant Association (NRA) Show.
• Serving as a sponsor, along with PepsiCo and
Yum! Brands, at MegaFest in Dallas where
Hattie Hill interviewed the president of the
Dallas Women’s Foundation during a featured
session on women’s leadership.
• Panel presentation at Winsight’s FARE
Conference.
