a care home

No one likes to imagine anyone in their family 

getting older but some elderly people need extra 

help or specialist care when unable to look after 

themselves. Sean Watson, director at family-run 

St Michaels Homes which runs Howard Lodge and 

Dudbrook Hall in Brentwood, writes about the 

important things you should consider when 

deciding on a care home. 

Is in-home care or residential/nursing care 

right for me/my family member? 

Round-the-clock-care in an individual’s home can 

be very expensive, and is out of reach for most 

people. But for some individuals, home care works 

really well as it allows 

them to still do things at 

home and retain a level 

of independence. 

However, if you do not 

have the financial 

means, you might just 

be eligible for basic 

domiciliary care, which 

may only consist of two 

to three visits a day 

under half an hour each. 

With residential care, staff are available at the push 

of a button. You are also included within a 

community of people and staff, all of whom can 

support and provide companionship/friendship. 

Can mum or dad afford the fees to live here? 

Some care home places are funded by the local 

authority or the NHS. However, if the person in 

question has capital or savings above £23,250, they 

will have to pay for their own care. On Essex County 

Council’s website there is information on care 

funding for Brentwood residents. 

care services are rated in five areas relating to 

safety, outcomes, how caring they are, how 

responsive they are to individual needs, and quality 

of leadership. Homes are also given an overall 

rating. Check the service’s score at cqc.org.uk. On 

top of this you can also ask for the home’s staff 

retention rate. Some of our staff have been with us 

since we opened our doors back in 1991. 

What kind of care do they specialise in? 

Residential homes differ in the levels of care they 

offer. Alongside the round-the-clock supervision 

you might normally expect, some also offer shortstay 

and daycare facilities. Some will also offer 

nursing, respite and specialist dementia care. We 

would recommend maybe staying with us for the 

day facility or maybe a short stay i.e. week or long 

weekend to see if it works. 

Is it the right location and when can I visit? 

Is it a peaceful and relaxed environment to live and 

visit with family and friends? Do the staff look 

rushed off their feet? Good homes will allow you to 

visit any time, within 

reason. Activities; 

are there planned 

activities within the 

care home, do they 

employ an activity 

person. Are there 

plenty of staff 

working, do they allow you to attend and visit the 

home or do you have to make an appointment to 

look around by a sales person? Not for us! 

What is the food like? 

A good diet is important at any age, but for the 

elderly it can help protect against a variety of agerelated 

conditions. Ask whether the menu is fixed 

every week or does it vary?

Unusual phobias 

Fear comes in all shapes and sizes 

Xanthophobia - fear of the colour yellow 

Sufferers of xanthophobia may fear anything 

yellow, including the sun, daffodils and yellow 

paint. In its most aggressive form 

xanthophobic symptoms may include an 

overwhelming fear of even the phrase yellow. 

Turophobia - fear of cheese 

Sufferers of Turophobia usually associate 

cheese with a traumatic memory. From 

cheddar to mozzarella turophobes often have 

to run away if they so much as see a slice of 

cheese. Some may fear one type of cheese 

while others may fear cheese altogether. 

Somniphobia - fear of falling asleep 

Somniphobia comprises often irrational and 

excessive fear of sleep. Somniphobes may fear 

falling asleep because they associate going to 

bed with dying. It may also result from a 

feeling of lack of control or from suffering 

repeated nightmares. Somniphobics may also 

fear losing time while sleeping. 

Omphalophobia- fear of the navel 

Omphalophobia is the fear of bullybuttons. 

Sufferers are afraid to have their bellybuttons 

touched, or to touch another person's belly 

button. The fear is often linked with the belly 

button's association to the umbilical cord and 

a mother's womb. Omphalophobes can be 

repulsed just by seeing or thinking about a 

belly button. 

Oikophobia - fear of houses, being in a 

house, home surroundings and certain items 

in a house. 

The types of items people fear in a house vary, 

but can be such things as bedrooms, 

bathrooms, appliances, electrical items, etc.

Pogonophobia is a word that refers to an 

intense fear or dislike of beards. Like other 

phobias or irrational fears, pogonophobia may 

seem silly to people who 

do not experience it, yet 

for thousands of

mental health and wellbeing.

Formerly the 

Howard Wallace 

Chorale this 

established and 

popular group was 

started in 1980 by 

Howard to offer a 

lighter range of 

music sung in full 

choral style. 

Over the years the group has grown in size 

and currently numbers around 75. Singing 

modern songs, folk songs, excerpts from 

opera and many selections from musicals 

arranged by Howard for the choir. We now 

enjoy some different styles and new

We have three concerts a year, April, July 

and December and this year we have been 

invited to perform a lunchtime concert in 

Chelmsford Cathedral on November 23rd. 

We regularly support local charities and 

this year we chose the Music Man Project 

in Southend, bringing music to young 

people with learning difficulties. They have 

achieved wonderful results, giving 

performances at the London Palladium. 

We were privileged when their founder 

David Stanley invited The Wallace Singers 

to be part of the backing choir for an event 

in the Royal Albert Hall in April 2019. 

If you think you would 

like to be part of this 

forward looking group, 

contact our Secretary and come and listen 

to a rehearsal on Monday evenings at 

Becket Keys School in Brentwood from 

7.45pm to 9.45pm. 

Of particular interest to other groups may 

be the fact that we are now making our 

range of purchased music available to hire. 

We have an extensive library from all 

genres, most with about 80 copies.
