But playwright Kristina Wacome Stevick believes Bradstreet, who was the first published American poet, should rank with the better known poets. The first Puritan writer in American literature, Bradstreet produced a large body of poems and writings. Her husband, Simon, and her father served as governors of the Massachusetts colony. She raised eight children, living in Salem, Cambridge, Ipswich and North Andover. “It was astounding to me that Reilly Twins Are Film Fan Favorites By Stewart Lytle, Reporter Continued on page 3 ––––––––––––––––– REGIONAL – Merrimack College honor communications major who wants to pursue students Emily and Hannah Reilly of Rowley a career in film production. “It was such won the fan favorite category in the New an amazing experience to have the whole England Sports Network contest for short community come together to support us.” films produced by college students. She seems to have written most copiously when her life was at its busiest in other ways,” Stevick wrote in an email. Stevick has written a play about Bradstreet, entitled From the Author to My Husband. Produced by History Alive, Inc., and sponsored in part by the Ipswich and Salem cultural councils, the performances will open on June 9th at the Whipple House in Ipswich. There will also be performances this summer at the Witch House in Salem and the Salem 1630 Pioneer Village. Stevick believes that Bradstreet has as much to say to modern Americans as she did to the colonials. At age 18, she arrived in 1630 in New England on the ship Arbella, which brought Gov. John Winthrop carrying the Massachusetts charter. In learning about Bradstreet, the mother of eight children, Stevick appreciated the tension between her writing and mothering, a kinship she said relates to working women today. “She was esteemed because she was level headed, modest, reasoned, articulate, creative, loving, and because she valued learning. Her cherished husband Simon seems to have had similar characteristics,” Stevick wrote.
