SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday May 30 2018 15 Your Local Views Youth council gets community support Selwyn Youth Council chairwoman Paige Sullivan talks about different projects going on in the district THE SELWYN community has really shown its support to the Selwyn Youth Council during the launch of the Selwyn Link bus trial, with laminated timetables being put up in bus shelters by community members in Leeston. The council was excited to run this trial, with incredible support shown through the high numbers on the buses each day. In total, we moved over 550 people over the course of the trial. This data will be presented to Environment Canterbury next month by a small group of youth councillors. This trial showed a clear and urgent need for transportation through our more rural areas and showed a strong indication of isolation – not only in youth, but older generations also. By running this service, residents were also able to have greater access to council facilities. The use of the bus was different for everyone – for some, a swim at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre, but for others, taking in the beautiful rural views of our district made for a day well spent. The youth council is now moving on to its latest project, Boost 2018. This is looking to be a week of activities and workshops for the teenagers in our district. The Youth Council is looking forward to running some workshops of its own. We are currently working on logos and what the timetable will look like, but it is sure to be a fun and exciting event taking place towards the end of this year. We also have plans to run more ‘What do YOUth Think?’ events throughout the year, so that we can find out more about what young people need and want in Selwyn. We are also working on more ways to find out what young people think, one of which is a Selwyn youth residents’ survey. This is still in the works, but the youth council is excited to work together to champion the voice of the youth in our district. Our Facebook page is @ SelwynYouthCouncil which is a great place to get in touch with us, share your feedback, or just to see what we’re up to. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Readers respond to ECan and the district council’s clash over increasing bus fares Graham Pownceby – Is there anything helpful at all that ECan does? It would appear they are working for farmers and industry and screwing everyone else (us) over something shocking . . . almost like reverse prostitution, we pay them to screw us. Trevor Taylor – Cant come from rates . . . they are too high already . . . you want a service you pay for it. Barry Clarke – If they want more people on buses they have got a cheek putting the fares up. Perhaps they have to find the money to give the CEO a big increase in his pay packet. Tiffany Burke – Good, glad to hear it. tReeS FOR LiFeStyLe bLOCkS Great specimen or avenue trees for a lifestyle block, hardy to the elements. Get in quick, whilst stocks last. All in 45L bags.
