Cllr Bill Binks
An enthusiastic Steering Group was set up in August 2014 to
establish The Whithorn Way. A Pilgrimage Walk from Glasgow to
Whithorn covering 143 miles (229 km). The objective is to develop
a trail following in the footsteps of pilgrims over the centuries,
stimulate environmental, economic and social regeneration of
local communities along the route.
They are keen to incorporate places close to the route which includes
Castle Semple Visitor Centre, Lochwinnoch Village, Howwood, Renfrew, Paisley Town
Centre, Johnstone, Elderslie and Kilbarchan. This walk is about 40% longer than
the West Highland Way and it is hoped will eventually be awarded ‘Scottish Great
Trail Status’. There will be several sections that are specifi cally established to assist
the walker to plan their walk and gain access to local support for businesses, be it
accommodation, eating or providing refreshment and transport assistance. This is a
leisurely way to boost the local economy and bring more tourists to our villages. If you
would like to know more then please visit the web site www.whithornway.org
Martin Bonnar of St. Mirin’s Pilgrims is our local contact and I am sure would be
delighted to come and give a talk to the Community Council if required.
Viewfi eld Rovers & Lochwinnoch Community Trust have been having talks with Council
Offi cers and Renfrewshire Leisure about either leasing or taking an asset transfer of
the premises that Viewfi eld Rovers has a lease on which was due to expire on the
31st March 2018. Due to the short time frame in which they have to come to some
arrangement, Viewfi eld Rovers will be offered an interim lease so they can fulfi l their
fi xtures for this year. A further interim lease extension for next year has also been
offered to Viewfi eld Rovers Both parties have been asked to consider a joint bid to
work together. Failing this the lease will given to the offer which provides the best
opportunity for the Community.
COMMUNITY COUNCILS NEED YOU!
All four Community Councils within Ward 9 are desperate to hear from anyone willing
to give up just two hours, approximately, a month to give of their time to assist with
making decisions on behalf of your village community. All villages struggle to be
heard at the best of times when Renfrewshire Council makes decisions that are
detrimental to the needs and aspirations of the residents. Without further recruitment
Community Councils die as have many in the past. Please consider coming forward
and volunteering. Contact either your local CC direct or myself and fi nd out what you
need to do.
It has come to my attention that the Royal Bank of
Scotland is reducing its mobile bank service to the village
of Kilmacolm, in Inverclyde. Whilst I have no information
to lead me to believe that the very valuable mobile bank
service to Lochwinnoch – which I fought very hard to
secure when RBS shut their branch in the village a few
years ago – is under threat, nonetheless I have contacted
RBS management to seek assurances that the mobile
bank service to Lochwinnoch will be maintained. I will fi ght tooth and nail to
defend what is a vital service for the elderly community and small businesses
in particular.
At the last meeting of the Council’s Leadership Board there was an update on
Renfrewshire’s three City Deal infrastructure projects, that is, the Renfrew to
Yoker road bridge, the fastlink project from Paisley Gilmour St to Glasgow, and
GAIA (the Glasgow Airport Investment Area). The key point in the update was
that the recent announcement of the new National Manufacturing Centre in
Inchinnan meant, according to the author’s report, a reconfi guration of the
projects.
I moved that the full economic benefi t of GAIA for my constituents would
only materialise if the A737 between North Ayrshire and Kilbarchan was
upgraded and dualled. I am delighted to report that other Ward Cllrs on the
Board supported me, and it received all party support. This is now an offi cial
request which the current administration will take to the City Region Cabinet
in Glasgow and I am delighted that we are moving forward with something
that should have been dualled at its inception.
Both my parents had small businesses so I know how hard the business
community in West Renfrewshire works to serve the wider community. Many
businesses struggle for investment capital and recently I have pointed some
village businesses in the direction of Business Loans Scotland for support
and advice. This is a consortium of all thirty two Scottish local authorities
which provides loan fi nance of up to £100,000 to new and growing, and
small and medium sized enterprises. If you run a business in Lochwinnoch,
Howwood, or Kilbarchan, and would like more information about a Business
Loans Scotland loan, please call Renfrewshire Council on 0141 618 7868 to
speak to someone.
My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the
Steeple Hall at 7.30pm, and my advice surgery in Howwood is at 6.30pm on the
4th Wednesday of the month, and then in Lochwinnoch on the 4th Wednesday
of the month in the McKillop at 7:30pm, all excluding July and December. But
I am also always available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224,
