SELECTING A BLOOD THINNER
“Blood-thinning” drugs help prevent the formation of blood clots in the legs that
travel to the lungs (causing potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism) by
preventing the body from producing blood-clotting factors (proteins in the liver that
contribute to the blood-clotting process). While warfarin (Coumadin) has traditionally
been the “blood-thinner” of choice, newer drugs such as dabigatran (Pradaxa),
rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), and edoxaban (Savaysa) have also
become available. Warfarin, however, remains the best option for patients who
have a mechanical heart valve or take blood thinners to manage atrial fibrillation
due to a rheumatic heart valve. In addition, while the newer blood thinners require
less monitoring, dabigatran is the only one that currently has an antidote to reverse
excessive bleeding.
Clotting isn't always a bad thing: When you cut yourself, it's what seals your
wound and keeps you from losing too much blood. Blood thinners prevent clotting,
so even tiny cuts or bruises will bleed a lot more if you take these drugs. Some
people only need blood thinners for a few months. But if you have ongoing health
problems, you may need to take them every day. For more information, please call
VILLAGE PHARMACY at 781-334-3133, or see us in the Colonial Shopping Center.
P.S. If bleeding occurs while taking warfarin, the effects of the drug can be
reversed with a drug called phytonadione (a synthetic form of vitamin K) or with
fresh frozen plasma (FFP).
