“Grow old along with me.
The best is yet to be.”
– Robert Browning
Dear HSPC Supporter,
No doubt adoptions are our most gratifying
moments at HSPC, but those events become
exceptional when they involve animals with
special needs including those in advanced
years. It is my joy to share with you recent
stories where senior pets were given a chance
to live out their remaining time in loving
homes.
Many of you may recall our 2016 rescue of
dogs from hoarding and abandonment in
Faulkner County. Thirteen year old Rufus,
center stage in that horrible situation, took
the hardest hits of neglect including ehrlichia,
heartworm disease, severe skin issues and
more. Though he was a shelter favorite, he
remained there for a long time until a very
special couple decided to embrace him for
the special guy he was and look beyond his
handicaps. Rufus took to his new family, the
Laramees, immediately! His years began to
disappear as he started rough-housing with
their other dogs and riding shotgun with his
people on car trips. Home at last, Sweet Ruffy!
"The best is yet to be" continued
Eleven year old Opal had a
“past.” She was brought in as a
stray, but her tipped ear and
preference to be touched only
on her own terms made us
wonder if she was feral.
Four years later, Rebecca, a
travel nurse currently working
in Little Rock, was missing her
pets back home. She decided to
adopt an older cat to keep her
company in her extended stay
hotel. She spotted Opal on our
website and knew
What is
Heartworm Disease?
Heartworm disease is
serious, but
preventable
Heartworm disease is
caused by long, slender,
parasitic worms that
migrate to the blood
vessels of the lungs and
to the right side of the
heart.
Heartworms can affect
dogs, cats, and ferrets.
The disease is
transmitted from one
pet to another by
mosquitoes, thus both
indoor and outdoor pets
are at risk for the disease.
Did you know?
Arkansas Ranks 3rd in
the Top 5 US States with
the highest
occurrence of
heartworm disease
reported annually.
they were meant for each other.
Rebecca has nothing but great
things to say about her perfect
companion, Opal, who sleeps by
her head and presses her nose
against Rebecca’s cheek when
she wants food or attention.
Rebecca has noticed that Opal’s
purrs continue to increase in
volume as their bond grows.
Happy travels, Opal!
Thanks to all of you that support
life, rescue and second chances!
How to Prevent
Heartworm Disease
Follow these two
steps to keep your
pet healthy
Preventing heartworm
disease is important for
every pet owner, and if
proper steps are followed
prevention can be very
simple to achieve.
1. Get your dogs tested for
heartworms annually,
and talk with your
veterinarian about
preventative for your cat.
2. Give your pets
preventive medications
available in monthly
topical or pill forms, or for
dogs, as a twice-yearly
injection.
10th Annual Practical Animal Law CLE
On April 6, HSPC
and co-sponsor
Student Animal
Legal Defense
Fund presented
the 10th Annual
Practical Animal
Law Continuing
Legal Education
Program.
(However, nonlawyers
also were
welcome.)
Recognizing this
ten-year anniversary, the
Animal Legal Defense Fund, a
nationally recognized animal
advocacy organization sent a
special guest speaker, Tom
Linney, its Pro Bono Director.
He gave an outstanding
presentation on national
developments in animal law
and participated on a panel
discussing pro
bono legal
services. Also on
the program were
presentations by
leading Arkansas
attorneys on
topics such as
service and
support animals in
disability law, the
role of nonprofits
in animal rescue,
and the use of
mediation in cases involving
animals. More than 80 local
attorneys and non-attorneys
attended. As always, proceeds
benefit the HSPC with a
portion also going to CARE.
Once again former law
professor and HSPC Board
Member Morell Mullins
organized this amazing event!
5 Great Reasons to
Adopt an Older Pet
Older animals have
manners. They are usually
house broken and less
destructive if at all.
Older pets end up in
shelters often because
their owners are also
elderly and can no longer
provide care for the
animals, or they are
moving into a retirement
facility or may have
passed away.
Older animals can still
learn new things. They
generally have a greater
attention span than
younger ones and want
to please their owner.
Older animals seem to
know what you did for
them. You can expect the
bond between you to
develop quickly and
deeply.
Life with a senior pet can
be rewarding and
relaxing. At the same
time you can feel good
about opening your heart
and home to an animal in
its golden years.

SAVE THE DATE!
Mark your calendars for our favorite annual
event coming in November! It’s the 27th year for
Reigning Cats and Dogs, a benefit hosted by the
Humane Society of Pulaski County. This year
promises to be as exciting as ever as we gather
with our friends and supporters at Next Level
Events in Little Rock’s Historic Train Station.
REIGNING CATS & DOGS
NOVEMBER 3rd | 7 PM
This event will raise thousands of dollars to help
care for injured, abandoned and abused animals
in need of special medical care, but we can’t do
that without YOUR help.
If you have a new item or service to donate, or
you are interested in becoming an event
sponsor, email debbie@warmhearts.org to find
out how you can help.
Lend Support to HSPC!
It has been a rocking great spring
thanks to the support of performers
Miranda Lambert, Styx and REO
Speedwagon! First, Miranda Lambert
on her Livin’ Like Hippies Tour came
to town with a personal agenda. She
wanted to support animal rescue at
every stop with her Mutt Nation/Fill
the Little Red Wagon Challenge.
Patrons purchased items from our
shelter wish list and brought them to
the concert in exchange for a chance
to win a seat upgrade and meeting
with the star herself. The donations
astounded Concert Promoters! On
April 10, Styx and REO Speedwagon
rolled into town with a similar mission.
Dee Sadler &
Puppy Love
HSPC has many wonderful
community outreach
programs, but one of the most
endearing is Puppy Love, led
by Dee Sadler. We currently
partner with eight facilities
and go to each on a scheduled
day once a month. Through
the efforts of approximately 40
volunteers, twice a week the
team takes their own small
dogs and sometimes puppies
from the shelter to visit local
retirement facilities. Four years
ago the program had grown
dormant, but Dee nurtured it
back stronger than ever.
Dee had this to say about
the experience. “Listening to
their stories and watching
them engage with our pups
is so sweet. The residents
are ready for us the minute
we hit the door. So good to
know the impact this
program makes."
Spotlight on
Dr. Allen of
Allen Veterinary Clinic
Since 1964 Dr. Richard Allen
has been caring for animals
in his North Little Rock
Veterinary Clinic. A man of
faith and deep compassion,
he has provided pro bono
services for HSPC animals
since the early nineties, as
well as full veterinary service
for the North Little Rock
Police Department working
dogs. He also supports the
Christian Veterinary Mission.

This time HSPC
volunteers sold CDs from
both groups. Each sale
came with a chance to
win a guitar signed by
the famous performers.
Once again their fans
and our supporters came
through! HSPC netted
over $2,000 and we met
a lot of our fan club too!
HSPC Hosts a Kitten Shower!!!
His devoted wife,
Doretta, said that
he goes the
distance to save
lives and performs
euthanasia only as
a last resort.
Patrons who use
Dr. Allen get a
special note on
the bottom of
their invoices that
says, “God has
given me two
loves: the love for
people and the
love for their pets.”
On May 12, dozens of supporters brought in
supplies for foster kittens while getting a
chance to snuggle with some that will be
available for adoption in a couple of weeks.
Kitten and puppy season brings the need for
more fosters. In addition, we are also looking for
medical, special needs and senior pet fosters.

Geronimo found sanctuary, medical care, and kindness on
the farm of our veterinarian, Dr. Teresa Medlock-Pratt.
Despite his terrible experiences in life, he will be remembered
for his exceptional sweetness.
