Biographical Sketch For
The Reverend Michael Anthony Parker, II
Reverend Michael Anthony Parker, II is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He
is the 2nd eldest of four children.
Reverend Parker graduated from the Baltimore School for the Arts in 2002,
where he majored in Vocal Music. He completed his undergraduate
studies at Coppin State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English.
He obtained a Master of Divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary
in Washington D.C. In addition, Pastor P, as he is affectionately known, is a
Provisional Elder in The United Methodist Church.
Rev. Parker currently serves as the Church Planter in Residence for
Resurrection East, a new faith initiative of the Baltimore-Washington
Conference. Prior appointments have included St. John's in Pumphrey,
New Beginnings Fellowship, Tabernacle United Methodist Church, St.
James United Methodist Church and Ames United Methodist Church in Bel
Air, MD. Very active in the United Methodist Church, his denominational
duties have been vast, including serving as an elected Delegate to the
2012 General & Northeastern Jurisdictional Conferences.
Pastor P’s motto can be easily summed up in Isaiah 61:4, “They will rebuild
the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew
the ruin cities that have been devastated for generations.” Desiring to use
all his gifts for the advancement of God’s Kingdom, Pastor P is on the
move for bringing God glory in all he does.
The Wall of Honor
Hope’s Wall of Honor is an everlasting tribute to our Veterans. It was designed and
donated to Hope by Brother Sid Taylor, a US Marine, Vietnam combat veteran and
beloved member of Hope. It is a memorial tribute to commemorate the sacrifices our
veterans have made for our country. We are grateful to Sid and his family for blessing
us all with the beautiful Wall of Honor.
7
New names are added to the Wall of Honor every Veteran’s Day. If you, a loved one, or
a friend served in the armed forces and would like to be added to the Wall, please
complete the Wall of Honor form located in the Literature Rack and place it in the Wall of
Honor mailbox outside the Sanctuary. God bless you.

MATURE DISCIPLES MINISTRY
BRIEF HISTORY
Zelma Smith-Dexter and Muriel Eaton approached Pastor Stewart in
January, 1999 regarding a Hope Church senior group. Rev. Betty Whitely
was appointed by Pastor Stewart to form a ministry for persons fifty and
older. Rev. Whitely selected ten seasoned Hope members to meet June 25,
1999, with Pastor Stewart in attendance. He gave encouragement by saying
this was the beginning of a great adventure and asked to be an honorary
member. All 50+ persons male and female are welcome to be a part. Our
purpose is to give support and have camaraderie with those who have
similar experiences and interests through religious, social and educational
activities; like short bus trips, educational forums, crafts, bake sales,
seminars, workshops and nursing home visits. We have added Black history
exhibits, Senior Day during the Festival of Hope, Grandparents' Luncheon, a
prayer breakfast, and Christmas luncheon. Our meetings are held the
second Tuesday of each month at one o'clock or join us for any of our
activities.
June 24, 2018 is the celebration of our 19th anniversary. God continues to
bless our ministry spiritually and in all our many endeavors.
MISSION STATEMENT
Mature Disciples are a Holy Spirit directed body of Christian believers who
are spiritually developed and committed to studying, sharing and living the
churches and the larger community, , demonstrating their faith and the
beauty of longevity through their dedicated lifestyle and service to others.
VISION STATEMENT
Mature Disciples will inspire others through reflections, prayers and
experiences and demonstrate commitment to God by the way we live and
Hope United Methodist Church Cancer Support Ministry
June is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
Prevention and Early Detection Can Improve Your Quality of Life
Join us Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the library as we support those
persons (including caregivers) going through the cancer experience.
What is prostate cancer? Cancer that occurs in a man’s prostate (a small walnut shaped
gland). This is a very common cancer in men and it usually grows slowly.
Symptoms: Prostate cancer may not cause signs or symptoms in its early stages. More
advanced cancer may cause trouble urinating, blood in urine or semen, swelling of the legs,
discomfort in the pelvic area, bone pain.
Risk factors include older age (usually 65+), being black where there is a greater risk to be
more aggressive and more advanced, family history, being obese.
Prevention: Choose a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables-one nutrient consistently
linked with the prevention of prostate cancer is lycopene, found in raw or cooked tomatoes.
Choose healthy foods over supplements because there are no studies that have found a
benefit to supplements in comparison to healthy diet.
Exercise most days of the week to improve your health and maintain weight and mood.
Talk to your Dr. about your risk of getting prostate cancer.
Tests and Diagnosis: There is not agreement in the medical community as to the benefit of
testing men with no symptoms however; it is recommended that men get tested in their 40’s
or sooner depending on risk factors.
Prostate Screening might include: Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) Insertion of finger in rectum to
examine prostate, Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test-blood sample is drawn and
analyzed
If detected other tests may be indicated like an ultra sound, collecting sample of tissue,
bone scan, CT or MRI.
