The Things We Do 

Every once in a while, the Chamber of Commerce office gets a call from someone looking for a puppy or a driver’s license or 

a construction permit. We do what we can to send these folks in the right direction, but generally we don’t sell puppies, issue 

driver’s licenses, or provide construction permits. 

What we do is work to make Glenview a great place to live, work, and own a business. What does that entail? We help local 

businesses thrive, with educational programs, networking opportunities, and marketing tools. And we help governmental 

entities understand what businesses need in terms of policies and resources. 

No doubt the things you’re most interested in are the things we do for you and with you. Here’s a run-down. 

Bites & Brews 

With winter still wheezing, what you need is a warm, convivial evening in the company 

of neighbors and friends. Bites & Brews offers wine and beer tastings, phenomenal 

food from around the region, and live music. It’s the break you need before the weather 

finally breaks. Date: annual, usually late April. 

Summer Fest 

Every year 15,000 of our friends and neighbors converge near Jackman Park and 

celebrate summer with games, food, balloons, clowns, magicians, and even beer. Don’t 

miss it. Date: annual, the last Saturday in June. 

Halloween Painting 

Don’t look now, but once a year, an army of small goblins and ghouls take over the town 

and paint it up right. There’s no resisting them, you’ll see. Date: annual, usually the third 

weekend of October. 

Holiday in the Park and Parade 

Every year, this longstanding tradition gets bigger and better and there’s still plenty of 

free treats for kids and their families. On one special day, the holiday lights on Glenview 

Avenue spring to life, Santa parades through the downtown, Glenview’s tree is lit, and 

everyone celebrates. Date: annual, last Saturday in November.

The Board of Trustees meets twice a month, while the 

commissions and boards meet once or twice a month. 

Village Government 

Glenview operates under a council-manager form of 

government. The Village President and six Trustees are elected 

at-large. Each term is four years and there are no term limits. 

Village elections are held every two years in April. 

The President, with the concurrence of the Trustees, appoints the 

Village Manager, responsible for implementing Board policies 

and handling day-to-day operations. The President also names 

members of the various boards and commissions responsible for 

overseeing and regulating different aspects of the Village. 

The Village Board’s decisions and policy initiatives are carried 

out by the Village Manager and six municipal departments:

Select Village Services 

COMMUTER PARKING 

A permit is needed to park in any of the Village’s commuter 

parking lots at the downtown Glenview or Glen of North 

Glenview train stations. Resident permits are $300 per year; 

nonresident permits are $400. Daily slot parking is available at 

both Metra lots. The cost is $2/day and the parking machines 

accept coins, cash and credit cards. 

WASTE DISPOSAL 

Residential refuse and recycling is collected once a week by 

Groot Industries Inc. All Groot customers use standardized 

containers with lids and wheels provided by the Village. Call 

(800) 244-1977 to set up an account. 

Landscape waste is collected weekly by Groot from early April 

through late November. Yard waste can be placed in approved 

30-gallon bags with an official landscape waste sticker, now 

$3.05 each, for pickup. Stickers are available at Village Hall, 

Jewel Osco, Heinen’s, Walgreens, Weiss Ace Hardware and 

online at www.groot.com. Seasonal subscriptions are also 

available through Groot. 

Hazardous waste (oil-based paint, sludge, chemicals, etc.) must 

be disposed of through a licensed waste disposal company 

or recycling center. 

WATER 

Bills for water services may be paid online at www.glenview. 

il.us, in person at Village Hall’s Resolution Center or through 

direct debit from a checking or savings account. Information is 

available at (847) 724-3112. 

BLOCK PARTY PERMITS 

Block party permits are available at www.glenview.il.us or 

through the Village Manager’s Office at (847) 904-4370. There is 

no fee for a permit. 

BUSINESS LICENSES 

Business licenses, or registrations in the case of state-licensed 

businesses, are required for all businesses that have locations 

within the corporate limits of Glenview. An application is 

available online at www.glenview.il.us or can be requested by 

calling the Resolution Center at (847) 724-1700. 

WINTER PARKING 

Overnight parking between 2 and 6 a.m. is prohibited on all 

public streets in the Village from December 1 through March 31. 

This facilitates snow plowing and public safety. If no off-street 

parking is available, on-street parking permits may be granted 

upon application to the Glenview Police Department. 

RECYCLING

GOVERNMENT 

On the first Friday of each month, unless it’s a holiday, the Village 

in partnership with the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook 

County offers residents the opportunity to safely dispose of 

unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medicines (except 

controlled substances); needles, syringes and sharps; and 

household batteries in the lobby of Village Hall, 2500 East Lake 

Avenue. Drop-off hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All names should be 

removed or blacked out on the prescription label. Sharps must 

be placed in rigid containers. CFL bulbs, used cartridges, and 

unwanted shoes may be dropped off at Village Hall between 8 

a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays.

GOVERNMENT 

Our History 

Present-day Glenview was first inhabited by Native Americans of 

the Potawatomi tribe. When their lands were ceded to the federal 

government in 1833, European immigrants moved into the 

area and established homesteads. By 1850 Northfield Township 

had been established, and today’s Glenview was then known 

as South Northfield. 

When the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad built 

the first set of tracks in 1872, this new form of transportation 

provided major changes—over time, the previously agriculturebased 

economy gave way to one more commerce-based. 

Following Glen View’s (vintage spelling) incorporation in 1899, 

the village underwent a time of modernization, as electricity, 

telephone, water & sewer service and paved roads became 

commonplace. Glenview’s iconic Bear Fountain was given 

by philanthropist Edwin Jackman one hundred years ago 

(1917). That same year, 70 young men from the area—(nearly 

10 of Glen View’s population at the time)—served their 

county in World War I. 

Although growth of the Village was gradual during the first 

half of the last century, the population increased by leaps 

and bounds following World War II. Glenview’s borders 

expanded accordingly. 

Glenview History Center’s Farmhouse Museum was the 

home of the Hutchings family, who were among the earliest 

homesteaders in the region. Built in 1864, it was a residence for 

until circa 1965, when it became headquarters to the newlyfounded 

Glenview Area Historical Society. The Hibbard Library 

(named in honor of founding GAHS members Dick & Jane 

Hibbard) houses a collection of photos, documents and printed 

materials related to Glenview and its people. Tours of 

both facilities are available upon request.
