ขอต้อนรับสู่สายการบินไทยสมายล์ สายการบินที่พร้อมให้

บริการผู้โดยสารทุกท่านด้วยรอยยิ้มในทุกเส้นทาง

สำาหรับเดือนนี้ เรามีเรื่องยินดีหลายอย่างที่อยากแบ่งปันให้

ผู้โดยสารทุกท่านได้รับทราบ เรื่องแรกคือเส้นทางกรุงเทพฯ-

ย่างกุ้ง ที่เราได้เริ่มปฏิบัติการบินตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 สิงหาคมที่ผ่าน

มานั้นได้รับการตอบรับเป็นอย่างดี ซึ่งสายการบินไทยสมายล์

อยากขอบพระคุณท่านผู้โดยสารที่ให้การสนับสนุนเรามาโดย

ตลอด เดือนนี้ยังเป็นเดือนที่เราได้ฤกษ์เปิดตัวเครื่องแบบใหม่

สำาหรับลูกเรือของไทยสมายล์ ซึ่งมีความโมเดิร์นและสดใสกว่า

เดิม ออกแบบโดยคุณมิลิน ยุวจรัสกุล ดีไซเนอร์ชื่อดัง

เพื่ออำานวยความสะดวกแก่ผู้โดยสาร สายการบินไทยสมายล์

ได้พัฒนาบริการต่างๆ อย่างต่อเนื่อง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการเช็คอิน

ต่อเครื ่องไปยังจุดหมายปลายทางต่างประเทศ การเช็คอิน

ไป-กลับภายในวันเดียวกัน และการเช็คอินออนไลน์เส้นทาง

บินภายในประเทศสำาหรับผู้โดยสารไทยสมายล์ นอกจากนี้

เรายังพัฒนากระบวนการออกใบกำากับภาษีให้มีความรวดเร็ว

ยิ่งขึ้น โดยผู้โดยสารสามารถแจ้งความจำ านงผ่านเว็บไซต์ ศูนย์

บริการลูกค้าทางโทรศัพท์ หรือศูนย์บริการลูกค้าภายใน

สนามบิน ซึ ่งเราเชื ่อว่าบริการเหล่านี ้จะช่วยให้ผู ้โดยสารได้

รับความสะดวกสบายยิ่งขึ้น

ด้านกิจกรรมต่างๆ นั้น ไทยสมายล์นำ าเสนอแคมเปญ WE

มาแจกรอยยิ ้มสดใสผ่านมิวสิกวิดีโอล่าสุดที ่คาดว่าเหล่า

แฟนคลับของไทยสมายล์คงได้ชมกันอย่างจุใจ นอกจากนี้ ใน

เดือนสิงหาคมที่ผ่านมา เราได้จัดกิจกรรมพาน้องท่องฟ้า โดย

พาน้องเยาวชนจากจังหวัดนราธิวาสมาทัศนศึกษาที ่จังหวัด

ชลบุรี ซึ่งน้องๆ ได้รับรอยยิ้ม และประสบการณ์กลับไปทุกคน

ในส่วนของการบริการบนเที่ยวบินนั้น ไทยสมายล์ฉลอง

เทศกาลไหว้พระจันทร์ด้วยการให้บริการเมนูสุดพิเศษระหว่าง

วันที่ 11-15 กันยายนนี้ เป็นขนมไหว้พระจันทร์ไส้คัสตาร์ด

แสนอร่อยจากห้องอาหาร Mei Jiang สูตรของโรงแรมเพนนิน-

ซูล่า กรุงเทพฯ อันโด่งดัง ซึ่งมีเฉพาะเทศกาลพิเศษนี้เท่านั้น

สำาหรับนิตยสารวีสมายล์ฉบับนี้ ขอเชิญผู้โดยสารทุกท่าน

เพลิดเพลินไปกับเนื้อหาที่เราคัดสรรมาเพื่อคุณ ทั้งเรื่องเมือง

หาดใหญ่ รวมถึงแหล่งท่องเที่ยวเชิงวัฒนธรรมในย่านนางเลิ้ง

Greetings,

Welcome to Thai Smile Airways, the airline

that provides our passengers with a smile to all

destinations.

This month, I am happy to announce the start of

many new beginnings. First of which is the opening

of our route from Bangkok to Yangon, where flights

have operated from August 1. This is also the month

where we unveil new uniforms for THAI Smile’s

crew with modern and vibrant designs created by

famous Thai designer Milin Yuvacharuskul.

I would like to take this opportunity to also thank

our passengers for their continued support through

the years. To facilitate the needs of those flying with

us, THAI Smile developed a line of unique services.

This includes check-in machines at destinations

abroad, the ability to check-in on the same day, or

online check-in for domestic routes. Passengers can

also receive tax invoices much faster by sending a

request through our website, Smile call centre, or

at the Smile service centre at the airport.

We have also recently presented our “WE Love

Your SMILE” campaign, which features bloggers

and internet idols singing to our latest music video

for THAI Smile fans. This past August, we were also

pleased to organise a field trip for young children in

Narathiwat province, allowing them to experience

the best of Chonburi.

September brings the Mid-Autumn Festival, and

THAI Smile celebrates this with a special menu

of mooncakes from Mei Jiang restaurant at the

Peninsula Bangkok. This special treat is available

on our flights from September 11 - 15.

For this issue of WE Smile, we invite our passengers

to enjoy an inside look at Hat Yai, a cultural tourism

spot in Southern Thailand. In addition, you can

browse through a special fashion set featuring the

new uniforms of our flight attendants.

คงไมผิดนักที ่จะกลาววาแมงานถมเงิน

ถมทองซึ ่งเปนศิลปหัตถกรรมดั ้งเดิมของ

ไทยนั้นมีมาตั้งแตสมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาแลว

แตงานหัตถศิลปชนิดนี ้กลับมาเฟ องฟูและเปนที

นิยมมากในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร การถมเงินถมทอง

เริ ่มจากการตีแผนเงินเพื ่อเปนรูปทรงตางๆ แลว

สลักใหเปนลวดลาย หรืออาจใชวิธีเขียนลายกัด

กรด จากนั ้นจึงนํายาถมที ่มีสีดํามารมดวยความ

รอนและถมลงรองลวดลายจนเต็มเสมอพื ้นผิว

แลวคอยนําทองคําบริสุทธิ ์ที ่ผสมเปนเนื ้อเดียว

กับปรอทมาทาบนชิ ้นงานใหทั ่ว จากนั ้นคอยใช

ความรอนไลปรอทออกไป เมื่อปรอทระเหิดออก

ไปเหลือแคทองคําติดอยู สีดําของยาถม สีทอง

ของทองคําจึงเรียกวา ‘ถมทอง’ นอกจากฉากถมทอง

เรื่องรามเกียรติ์อันแสนวิจิตรแลว พิพิธภัณฑศิลป-

แผนดิน ณ พระที่นั่งอนันตสมาคมยังไดจัดแสดง

พิพิธภัณฑผาในสมเด็จพระนางเจาสิริกิติ

สรางสรรคถึง ๒ ป และตองใชชางฝมือถึง ๑๓๐

คนในการรังสรรคใหเสร็จสิ้น

Gold Nielloware has long been a fundamental

Thai Art, achieving refi nements since the

Ayutthaya era. From there, this style of

craftsmanship received a renaissance during

the Rattanakosin period, a revival that ensures

it is still fl ourishing today. Nielloware is created

with a fl at silver or gold plate which is then

molded into a desired shape. Intricate carvings

are then deeply etched onto the surface. Niello

alloy, a mixture of pure gold and mercury, is

then inlaid onto the pattern’s grooves. Heat is

applied to evaporate the mercury. This leaves

the design shining with rich gold or “thomtong”,

accented by deep black niello. In addition to

the spectacular gold Niello Screen with Scenes

from the Ramakien, Arts of the Kingdom

Museum Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall also

displays The Gold Niello Bhudthan Throne, which

is a replica of the wood Bhudthan Throne of the

Palace. This grand masterpiece took 2 years,

and required 130 craftspeople to complete.

The AEC (ASEAN Economic Community) was established with

a primary goal to improve the economic power and competitiveness

of ASEAN countries in the global arena. However, we have to

admit that to achieve this goal, there must be a way for all of

the ten member countries to connect on a core level. The Golden

Heritage of ASEAN Textiles Exhibit will show how member states

of ASEAN have been bound together for centuries through garments,

textiles and threads.

The Golden Heritage of ASEAN Textiles Exhibit will be held in

honour of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, to celebrate her

60th birthday. The aim is also to showcase fabrics and garments

that refl ect the identity of each ASEAN country, from unique

woven patterns to traditional and cultural costumes. One thing

that appears obvious is the role that textiles played in the ancient

cultures of this region. Although there were tribal and ethnic

diversity, as well as differences in language and customs, textile

became a way to communicate indirectly. In addition to showcasing

this aspect, the exhibition will also display over 500 pieces of rare

textiles and apparel that Ajarn Phaothong Thongjuea and his

colleagues collected over the course of forty years. Some

fabrics in the collection are dated to be over two hundred years old.

Congestion and confusion in the city can make anyone wish for an

escape. We could all use a day off, or if time does not permit, then a

few hours can still be life saving. If you agree, then we recommend

Can you tell us about your latest projects?

I just finished filming the TV dramas Neung Nai Suang, Nang Rai

Teeruk, Plubpleung See and Chompoo, and I’m currently filming

Duen Prachum Dao, Heha (Mia) Navy and I am also a guest actress

for Tai Ngao Chan and Love Devil. Moreover, I have a little business

on Instagram, which sells dietary supplements called Daviz.

How did you come up with this business?

One day I talked with Khun B, who is now my business partner. I

am 40 years old now, while B is 53. Our metabolism is not as good

as it used to be and the body produces less L-carnitine. We started

looking for something to help us and found this formula. We tested

it for over a year. In Daviz, all ingredients are natural. It includes

things like chilli, seaweed, white beans, and Malabar tamarind. There

are some imported ingredients, but no chemicals. It helps boost the

metabolic process and help facilitate the excretory system. When

our systems work in a more efficient way, the body gets slimmer.

Apart from the dietary supplements, how do you take care of

yourself?

I take vitamins and go to the gym. When the whole body gets

tensed from too much exercise, I had to go for a massage. So now

I try to work out every other day. For stress, if I feel stressed, I tend

to go for acupuncture.

Any tips that you would like to share with modern working women?

I think diet is very important. It’s the thing that people tend to

neglect the most. A balanced diet is important, especially when

you are getting older. Skip a meal and you can have a headache.

Get enough rest, exercise, drink a lot of water. Appearance is also

essential. You have to pay attention to yourself. If you don’t love

yourself, who will love you? Right?

It’s not just the rabbits of folklore that are tied to the moon.

We humans have been fascinated by its beauty for centuries.

According to Chinese belief, the 15th day of the 8th lunar

month is when the moon shines the brightest and fullest,

thus marking the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to the

Chinese mythology, the Mid-Autumn Festival began with

the legend of Chang Er, the wife of Hou Yi. Back then ten

suns hung in the sky. To make the world a better place,

Hou Yi, a skilled archer, shot down nine suns. He received

an elixir that would make him immortal as thanks from a

well-wisher, but when the word about the immortal potion

began to spread, Chang E, to whom he gave the potion to,

was under attack. To escape from danger, Chang E decied

to drink the potion herself, she then soared up to the sky

to become the moon goddess. Hou Yi missed his wife

so much that he took food to his wife as offerings on an

altar. This happened yearly and soon after people began

to follow him, thus the moon worshipping ceremony in the

Mid-Autumn Festival began.

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also the day when families

reunite. Thailand has long observed this festival, as it is

popular with the country’s large ethnic Chinese population.

This tradition would not be complete without mooncakes,

the sweet circular pastries that are stuffed with various

delights. There are several legends about mooncakes but

the most popular one might be the story about the Han

uprising. The Han people planned an uprising against

the rule of the Mongols. However, the Mongols were very

watchful, and the Han people had no way to pass messages

that were necessary to unite members into action. After

a secret meeting, a plan was formed: the Mid-Autumn

Festival of that year would be the day for them to take

action. And the mooncakes would serve as a vessel to

pass the action plan on. A piece of paper with a message

was inserted into every single one of the cakes: “Kill the

Mongols on the 15th day of the 8th month.” On the night

of the Moon Festival, when the moon was shining, the

rebels attacked according to their plan and overthrew

the government.

ที่หมายถึงพระจันทร์นั้นยังออกเสียงเหมือนกับคำว่า ‘การกลับมา

เจอกัน’ ด้วย

Today, ceremonies are more peaceful. People come

together to eat mooncakes. The treats are divided into

portions for each member of the family. Most importantly, each

piece is also the same size, which is why the mooncake is

a symbol of unity and harmony. The circular shape—

reminiscent of the moon—also serves another purpose.

The Chinese word for ‘circle’ refers to the moon, but it also

sounds like the word “reunion”.

Can you tell us about your most memorable trip?

“Last year I had a chance to visit Hokkaido. It was freezing,

but fun too! The whole town turned white from the snowfall.

We had a “snow war” and walked through the forest. I took

lots of photos, it was such a memorable trip.”

“Recently I had a chance to go to Phuket with my family. My

dad and I swam together in the sea. It was like we travelled

through time and suddenly I was a little girl again. We floated

in the sea, chatting. The ambiance was perfect and it was a

very warm moment.”

good to be true. We can also go island-hopping. I never

get bored of Phuket.”

WE Smile: Can you tell us about the uniform’s details?

Milin: Every look is modern with a touch of Thailand. The fabric

is stitched diagonally, there are traditional folds and pleated

details on the neckline. These aspects give more dimension

and adds an overall gentle style. The main colour is tangerine

orange, with the patterned section bearing a print reminiscent

of the evening sky with purple, pink, and yellow which all

corresponds with THAI Smile’s colours. Personally, I think the

sky is most beautiful at dusk, whenever I see it from the plane,

it always makes me smile.

WE Smile: What makes THAI Smile different from other airlines?

Milin: As a regular customer, I think THAI Smile is a premium

คุณคืออะไร แน่นอนว่าหลายคนคงนึกถึงตลาด

ที่รวบรวมของกิน หรือกล้วยทอดที่เดินมาส่ง

ถึงรถ ที่ใครต่อใครต้องเคยซื้อแก้หิวยามรถติดกันมาแล้ว

ย่านนางเลิ้งในอดีตเคยอยู่ในสภาพท้องทุ่งชื่อว่า

ทุ่งส้มป่อยหรือสนามกระบือ ใช้เป็นสถานที่ประกอบ

พิธีแรกนาขวัญและพิธีพิรุณศาสตร์หรือการขอฝนใน

สมัยต้นรัตนโกสินทร์ ต่อมาเมื่อพัฒนาเป็นชุมชนย่าน

การค้าซึ่งเป็นผลจากการขุดคลองผดุงกรุงเกษมในสมัย

สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 4 จนเป็นศูนย์กลาง

การค้าทางน้ำาอันเฟื่องฟูแล้ว อีเลิ้งหรือภาชนะประเภท

โอ่งหรือตุ่มก็ได้ถูกซื้อขายกันเป็นจำานวนมากในย่านนี้

จนทำาให้ถูกเรียกตามชื่ออีเลิ้ง ซึ่งเชื่อว่าเป็นที่มาของชื่อ

นางเลิ้งในปัจจุบัน ทุกวันนี้ ชุมชนนางเลิ้งยังเต็มไป

ด้วยเรื่องราวให้ค้นหาผ่านซอกหลืบต่างๆ ซึ่งถ้าใครได้

มีโอกาสเดินลัดเลาะแล้วคงมีอันได้หลงเสน่ห์ เพราะ

When thinking of Nang Lerng,

most people picture food markets or

the famous fried bananas which are

served right to your car’s driver side

window during a traffic jam.

Nang Lerng area once was a field

called “Som Poi Field” or “Kra Bue

Field” which served as a place for

the Harvest Festival during the early

Rattanakosin era. After a grand

canal was dug during the reign of

King Rama IV, the area became a

centre of transportation and trading.

The name ‘Nang Lerng’ was derived

from ‘E-Lerng’ which refers to

trading urns and traditional water

vessels. Today, this community has

charming and nostalgic spots to

relax and shop.

วัดสุนทรธรรมทานคือศูนย์กลางแรกเริ่มของ

ย่านนางเลิ้งตั้งแต่ก่อนมีการขุดคลองผดุง-

กรุงเกษม วัดนี้มีชื่อเดิมว่าวัดแคนางเลิ้ง ซึ่ง

เพี้ยนมาจากคำาว่า วัดแค่ ตามสำาเนียงชาวใต้

ที่มาตั้งถิ่นฐานอยู่ หลังจากได้อพยพโยกย้าย

กลับมาตามกองทัพของเจ้าพระยาพระคลัง

(ดิศ บุนนาค) เมื่อครั้งยกทัพไปปราบหัวเมือง

ปักษ์ใต้ จึงเป็นที่มาของบ้านละคร คณะโขน

การแสดงต่างๆ พระอุโบสถอันใหญ่โตสวยงาม

ของวัดนั้น ส่วนหนึ่งสำาเร็จได้ด้วยเงินบริจาคของ

มิตร ชัยบัญชา ดาราผู้ล่วงลับที่เคยอาศัยอยู่ใน

ชุมชนแห่งนี้ และกฐินดาราที่เขานำาดาราพร้อม

แฟนหนังมาช่วยกันทำาบุญ ที่วัดนี้จึงเป็นสถานที่

สวดอภิธรรมศพและเก็บอัฐิของเขาอีกด้วย

ปัจจุบันยังมีคนไปกราบไหว้ช่องเก็บอัฐิของเขา

อยู่เสมอ เห็นได้จากดอกไม้ที่ยังคงใหม่และรูป

ปั้นที่ทางวัดเก็บรักษาไว้อย่างดี เพื่อระลึกถึงการ

จากไปแม้จะยาวนานถึง 45 ปีแล้วก็ตาม สำาหรับ

ใครที่จะมาเที่ยวนางเลิ้ง จะจอดรถที่วัดแล้วทำ าบุญ

Remembering Mitr Chaibancha

Soonthorn Dhammatan Temple was

the centre of this area long before the

canal was dug. The previous name

‘Kae Nang Lerng Temple’ was given to

the temple by Southern natives that

migrated alongside the troops of Dis

Bunnag after he battled with the

Southern cities. The significant temple

was patronised by Mitr Chaibancha,

a famous actor living in this area.

He encouraged merit and donation for

this temple, so his bones were

preserved here. Although he passed

away over 45 years ago, people still

come to pay respect to him. If you

want to visit this area, this makes an

interesting detour.

กลุ่มบ้านหลังเล็กๆ ที่อยู่ในซอยเลี้ยวไปคดมาในชุมชนนี้เป็นเวิ้งของ

ศิลปวัฒนธรรม เกือบทุกบ้านเป็นบ้านของศิลปิน ทุกคนมีความสุขกับ

อาชีพที่ทำา ชาวบ้านทุกคนเป็นเหมือนพี่น้อง ช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลซึ่งกันและกัน

คำาว่าฝากผีฝากไข้ที่ได้ยินตั้งแต่สมัยก่อนยังใช้ได้กับชุมชนแห่งนี้ ปกติ

ชุมชนจะคึกคักเมื่อมีกิจกรรมแต่ละครั้ง แต่ถ้าคุณอยากจะมาเที่ยวแวะชม

ทุกบ้านยินดีเปิดบ้านต้อนรับขอเพียงแค่โทรมาแจ้งกันก่อนเท่านั้น

บ้านต่างๆ ในชุมชนได้รวมตัวกันเพื่อรักษาศิลปวัฒนธรรมให้คนรุ่นหลังได้

Almost every house along the small alleys in this area

belong to artists. Everyone seems joyful and there is a sense

of support, just like the old days. This community is more

lively when there are events. If you want to visit, just inform

the artists beforehand, they are usually very pleased to

welcome visitors. More importantly, everyone is eager to

preserve the old buildings for their descendants. Though a

new metro line is coming, they hope their community will

remain, that people will visit Nang Lerng more comfortably

and that the cultural area will be preserved.

บ้านเต้นรำา เดิมคือโรงเรียนสามัคคีลีลาศ

สังกัดกระทรวงศึกษาธิการ ที่นี่สอนเต้นรำาบน

ลานลีลาศกว้าง ซึ่งเป็นศูนย์รวมความคึกคักใน

สมัยนั้น แต่ด้วยยุคสมัยที่เปลี่ยนไป บ้านเก่าเลย

เหมือนคนแก่ที่ถูกทอดทิ้ง โปรเจ็กต์การรื้อฟื้น

ตัวบ้านจึงค่อยๆทำา ค่อยๆปลุกขึ้นมาให้มีชีวิต

โดยยังคงความเก่าตั้งแต่ปีพ.ศ. 2503 ไว้ให้เห็น

ทั้งโครงสร้าง ทั้งเสาฝึกเต้นลีลาศ และตกแต่ง

ด้วยของเก่าโบราณที่ได้ค้นพบ เช่น เครื่องเสียง

แผ่นเสียงโบราณที่หายากก็มีให้เห็น ม้วนเทป

เพลงถูกทำาเป็นโคมไฟเป็นกระจกกรองแสงรอบ

บ้านที่มีความเท่แบบร่วมสมัย ปลายปีนี้บ้าน

เต้นรำาจะมีนิทรรศการและการสอนเต้นลีลาศ

กิจกรรมที่นอกจากจะสนุกแล้ว ยังเป็นการฝึก

บุคลิกภาพ การเดิน การฟังดนตรีไปพร้อมๆกัน

นอกจากนี้ยังจะมีห้องสมุด ห้องพัก รวมถึงมุม

กาแฟเครื่องดื่ม เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านมีรายได้เลี้ยงตัว

‘Baan Ten Rum’ which could be

translated as ‘Dancing House’, the

former ‘Samakee Dancing School’

taught a style of dancing that took

place in large fields. As time passed,

the house was abandoned. But,a new

renovation project resurrects the

glorious 1960 architectural details.

The original structure is preserved,

decorated with antiques, real and

adapted. You’ll find many real record

players. The lamps and mirrors are

made from old cassettes, giving a

contemporary feel. By the year’s end,

there will be an exhibition and dance

workshop. You can enjoy nice music

together and improve your techniques.

There will also be a library, hostel, and

cafe to financially support the locals.

After the renovation, the locals have a

place to be proud of what their ancestors

left behind. They also have a space to

meet and exchange their opinions,

creating a living museum.

Next to the Dancing House lies Baan Nang

Lerng. This building was home to artists,

comedians, singers and play actors since the

reign of King Rama III. Nowadays, it serves as a

common space for activities and art, using art to

solve the community’s issues with drugs and

domestic violence.

When events are held, the children in the

community absorb knowledge about the different

kinds of artistic occupations. It sparks their

dreams and let them pursue these thoughts into

reality. The participants on the other hand, will

learn the community’s way of life. In the near

future, there will be a tiny museum and cafe.

Nara Silpa House is famous for its Thai original stage

performances since the reign of King Rama VI. It now produces

the costumes for the traditional Khon play, and were the part of

the costume productions for Thammasart Khon Performance.

เจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงมีพระราชดำาริให้สร้างทางรถไฟสายใต้ขึ้น ส่วนหนึ่งก็เพราะ

ทรงอยากเชื่อมหัวเมืองทางใต้เข้ากับการปกครองส่วนกลาง และเพื่อป้องกัน

ไม่ให้อังกฤษเข้ามาแทรกแซงหัวเมืองมลายูของไทย ซึ่งนอกจากจะช่วย

ให้การคมนาคมระหว่างกรุงเทพฯและภาคใต้สะดวกและรวดเร็วยิ่งขึ้นแล้ว

ทางรถไฟสายนี้ยังช่วยยกระดับฐานะทางเศรษฐกิจของประชาชนภาคใต้

ด้วย โดยชุมทางรถไฟภาคใต้นั้นตั้งอยู่ที่บ้านโคกเสม็ดชุน ซึ่งต่อมาได้ถูก

ผนวกรวมกับบ้านหาดใหญ่กลายเป็นเมืองหาดใหญ่ ทำาให้หาดใหญ่กลาย

The beginnings of Hat Yai’s growth is heavily linked to

the start of the Southern Railway in 1909. His Majesty King

Rama V built the railway to connect the southern districts to

the central administration. This was also a security measure

to prevent British intervention and allow the people of

Bangkok to travel south in a faster and more convenient

way. The southern railroad junction is located at Khok

Samed Chun, which later merged with the city of Hat Yai.

This allowed Hat Yai to flourish as a centre for trade. Growth

further increased when the British requested permission to

connect the rail lines from Hat Yai to Padang Besar, Alor

Setar and Penang in Malaysia. Due to its connected railway

system and being part of the province of Songkhla (a

famous shipping port since ancient times), Hat Yai became

the region’s major junction and economic centre.

นายทุนจีนโพ้นทะเลก็เริ่มอพยพเข้ามาตั้งรกราก

เพื่อทำาธุรกิจต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ทำาสวนยางพารา ทำา

เหมืองแร่ รวมถึงทำาการค้าขาย หลังจากนั้นไม่

นาน จำานวนครัวเรือนและประชากรของ

ย่านนี้จนชุมชนใกล้ทางรถไฟได้กลายเป็นชุมชน

ชาวจีนไปโดยปริยาย เห็นได้จากป้ายหน้าร้าน

รวงต่างๆ ที่ล้วนเป็นตัวอักษรจีน

The railroads not only brought

economic prosperity, but also an influx

of Chinese immigrants from Malaysia.

This includes the Hakka, Teochew,

Cantonese and Hainanese Chinese.

Many first came as labourers who directly

worked on the railroads, but others later

settled in Hat Yai to trade and start

businesses in the new rubber plantations

and mining industries. As the population

increased, houses and shops began to

sprout between the transportation

networks and markets. The two-storey

wooden homes turned into halftimbered

buildings, which then became

full brick and mortar structures. Hat Yai

soon had its first cement structure,

the Sino-Portuguese style “Yip In Tsoi”

building located on Niphat-Uthit 1 road.

Hat Yai’s economy boomed again in

1928 when Mr. Chee Kim Yong, an investor

from Songkhla, decided to build a

permanent market. Three roads were

constructed to accommodate the rising

population, which became Niphat-Uthit 1,

2 and 3. The Chinese lived and thrived

around the railroad, and their community’s

influence can still be seen in the Chinese

characters on storefronts in the area.

As the city grew, more hotels and entertainment venues

opened. The Vic Khun Phra Theatre was the first cinema

in the city. Then came the western-style King Theatre,

situated next to Kim Yong market. Hotels began to spring

up like flowers, including the Kian Tai hotel, Yi Kee Hotel,

Seefhat Hotel and the Japanese Nippon Hotel. Although

today new hotels have taken their place, tourism and

entertainment still contributes a major part to Hat Yai’s

income. Each year 3.5 million people visit the province. The

majority of tourists come from Malaysia and Singapore,

crossing the border at Sadao. Thai tourists and other

foreigners usually travel by air, and Hat Yai airport receives

over 70 flights and ten thousand people daily. The

commercial expertise of the Hat Yai locals have allowed

them to adapt and accommodate all groups of people. For

those who seek entertainment, a pub crawl along the main

streets is a welcome way to spend leisure time. Each venue

has different styles of music to cater to various tastes.

Of course, when visiting Hat Yai one of

the first landmarks to put on your list is the

Kim Yong market. There is an old saying

that if you missed visiting this market, then

you have not seen Hat Yai at all. Imported

products from neighbouring countries fill

almost every corner of the two-storey

market. Here you’ll find textiles, clothing,

electrical appliances, footwear, fragrances

skincare, dry foods, snacks and fruits like

rare imported cherries. In addition to

general shopping, this is a great place to

practice your bargaining skills. Not far from

Kim Yong Market is Santisuk Market,

another famous old marketplace with a

wide selection of imported goods.

Aside from the traditional markets, Hat

Yai is also known for its creative shopping

centres. From Diana Shopping Mall, one

of the first malls in the southern region,

you can also find Odeon and the new

Central Festival.

Hat Yai is home to people of many ethnic backgrounds, and has

embraced these diversities. Almost every major religion has a place

of worship in the city. It is popular among Buddhists to worship at

Phra Maha Chedi Tripop Trimongkol, the first stainless steel Chedi in

the world. Muslims can admire the beauty of The Central Mosque in

Hat Yai, which is regarded as the “Taj Mahal of Thailand”, and is

especially breathtaking in the evenings. The Thai-Chinese and Chinese

people also have Wat Thaworn Wararam, a local heritage site. If you

have time, we recommend going to Kor Hong Mountain which is part

of the National Park. There is a large sacred Buddha statue here,

and you can then ride a cable car to see a Brahman Deity and

Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) statue made of white jade. Off in the

distance, one can also catch a glimpse of the Central Mosque. It’s a

magnificent spot to reflect on the idea of different religions coexisting

together.

Not far from the city is the Tambon (sub-district) of Klong Hae.

Here, you’ll find Fooktien Market, which may seem an unlikely place

to visit at first. Look closely and you’ll find a Jade Amulet Centre

created by Thamamayut Jainpichitkulchai of the Fooktien Group. He’s

more commonly known as “the man who owns the 1,000 year jade”.

The three unit and three storey building exhibits ancient objects

and sculptures carved from various types of jade. This includes an

Imperial Jade bell that dates back over 1,000 years, a grand seal

(also made of Imperial Jade) that his mother—who was in the

Chinese royal court—brought to Thailand, along with 200,000

buddha amulets, Benjarong pottery from the era of King Rama V

and countless antiques. The admission fee is 1,000 THB, with

proceeds going to benefit a charity that provides housing for the

needy in various provinces. The Fooktien Group has future plans to

build a new museum to exhibit their permanent collection.

wondered how much Hat Yai would

change should I have the chance to

return, especially since the Songkhla

Chamber of Commerce is pushing Hat

Yai to be part of their “Path of the

Dragon” project, and as a new

motorway connects Hat Yai with the

commercial centre of Sadao. It seems

this large city will only get bigger. I

reached the airport before there was

time to finish that thought. Farewell,

มาแรงในชวงนี้ ที่หลุดออกจากกรอบของนิยาย (fi ction) หรือหนังสือ

ที่ไมใชนิยาย (non-fi ction) โดยสิ้นเชิง ใชแลว หนังสือที่ขายดีที่สุด

ในวันนี้คือสมุดระบายสีสําหรับผูใหญ กระแสนี้เริ่มขึ้นในปค.ศ. 2013 หลังจาก

ที่โจฮันนา แบสฟอรด (Johanna Basford) เปดตัวหนังสือ ‘Secret Garden:

A new craze is sweeping across bookstores, and it has

nothing to do with fi ction or non-fi ction. Books topping the

current best seller's list are all adult colouring books. It

started in 2013, with the release of “Secret Garden: An Inky

Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book” by Johanna Basford.

The illustrator is perhaps best known for her work on wine

and perfume labels, and her gorgeous drawings are intricate,

refi ned and not anything like the cartoonish simplicity

you’d fi nd in a children’s colouring book. Today, book stores

can’t seem to keep the new editions on shelves. From the

previously mentioned fantastical garden created by Basford

to Gemma Latimer and Jessica Stoke’s “The Wallpaper

Colouring Book” and “Tropical Wonderlands” by Millie Marotta,

there is no lack of new titles.

So what compels adults to sit down and relive their

childhood by colouring? Some believe it’s the millennials who

have returned to live with their parents, an act which in itself

brings out a childish nature. With today’s entertainment so

focused on drawing people into another world, books, movies

and videogames gain cult status from people’s willingness to

suspend belief and escape into fantasy. The more enthralling

the fantasy, the better your media sells. And perhaps the

best fantasy to fall in is the ability to become a child again

and be lost in creating art with little or no effort.

อีกหนึ่งทฤษฎีที่ฟังดูสมเหตุสมผลคือ ลวดลายในหนังสือระบายสี

เหล่านี้ดูคล้ายกับมันดาลา (Mandala) หรือภาพวาดทรายอันแสน

Others say it is akin to the Mandalas—the intricate

sand paintings that Tibetan monks create—a form

of mediation. This is also possible, as many people

are seeking stress relief in today’s hectic lifestyle.

The repetitive and calming aspect of colouring has

been well recorded to reduce anxiety and famous

Psychologist Carl Jung used to have his patients colour

in mandalas for this very purpose. There is also the

popularity of social media, which allows people to

share their creations. While all of these things may

be true, the answer may be simpler than you think.

If one enjoyed the creative energy of colouring as a

child, why not as an adult?

Colouring as an adult has its own set of challenges.

Though it follows a wonderfully brilliant formula,

“easy to play, and hard to master”. Anyone can

pick up a colouring book and begin filling in lines.

However, seeing the masterful works on social

media, or achieving your own personal techniques

goes a long way to sustaining this hobby. It becomes

an achievable, and very addictive pastime.

นักอ่านอย่างเราก็อดหวังไม่ได้ว่าจะมีห้องสมุดดีๆ

ให้ได้เลือกไปนั่งอ่านหนังสือกันเยอะๆ ก็ไม่รู้เหมือน

กันนะว่าจะเป็นจริงมั้ย แต่ก็อย่างที่พาโบล ปิกัสโซ่

พูดไว้แหละว่า “ทุกสิ่งที่จินตนาการได้ เป็นจริงเสมอ”

I confess that those who are

enchanted with books may seem a little

strange. They get lost just by touching

the texture of paper, inhaling the soft

smell of the pages (which seems to

purfume the air when reading in a

quiet spot) before getting completely

sumerged in a thrilling story or beautiful

illustrations. If that is a form of

marketing then I am pleased to be a

victim of this propaganda knowingly,

since I’ve purchased many books not

just for reading, but also for collecting.

Most people have their first

experience with books in a small or

narrow school library. There’s not much

space for anything aside from your

imagination. When we grow up, we

have to wonder if a dedicated ‘area for

reading’ is really possible. We often

can’t help but dream and long for the

spaces created for bookworms that are

described in literature. This is what

prompted Alex Johnson to travel the

world in search for fantasy libraries that

have been made real.

The book, “Improbable Libraries” by

Alex Johnson published by Thames &

Hudson showcases imaginative places

CULTURE

that have been transformed into a hive

for the imagination with books, which

(most importantly) offer others the

ability to read for free. Whether it be a

treetop library at luxury Thai resort

Sovena Kiri, a library for youths on the

back of a camel in Mongolia, a pop-up

library for the Occupy Wall Street event

in central New York, or a mobile library on

bike wheels which services the state of

Arizona for people of all ages to fill their

minds with endless imaginative worlds.

Aside from the ground-breaking

libraries which Johnson included in his

book, there is currently an initiative

called ‘The Future Library Project’

created by Katie Paterson. This aims to

plant trees in Norway which will then be

used to create original manuscripts

from famous writers each year until

2114. The books will become part of a

large future library.

Although the number of regular

readers are decreasing in every country

around the world, Improbable Libraries

and other new projects are proof that

the culture of reading and libraries will

not be overthrown easily. Even with the

popularity of E-Book Readers and

online media, the culture of reading,

libraries, and book collecting in one

place has not faded. On the contrary, it

seems to be improving in new creative

directions. The story of ‘An Ideal

Library’ spreads widely and quickly in

today’s internet world. Seeing these

projects gradually become reality,

readers like us may wonder if we too

can hope to have a fantastical library for

our own personal use, one that stirs the

imagination where we can peacefully sit

and read. We never know if it will come

true. But as Pablo Picasso once said,

“Everything you can imagine is real”.

On August 1, 2015, Dr. Kanit Saengsuphan, Chairman of

เรียกความสนใจจากผู้คนได้ไม่น้อย โครงการนี้เป็นความ

ตั้งใจของกลุ่มคนเล็กๆในเชียงใหม่ที่เห็นคุณค่าของต้นไม้

และใช้เรื่องสนุกๆ อย่างส่งคำาท้าให้เพื่อน 3 คน ร่วมปลูกต้นไม้

และส่งคำาท้ากันต่อ กระจายไปในวงกว้างในแทบทุกสาขาอาชีพ

ปลูกแล้วก็ไม่ใช่สักแต่ว่าอัพโหลด แท็กแล้วจบกันไป แต่มือ

เย็นเมืองเย็นเน้นให้ความรู้ ความเข้าใจในการดูแลพันธุ์ไม้ให้

เติบโตยั่งยืน แบบปลูกแล้วต้องรักและดูแล ไม่ปล่อยละเลยจน

ตายไปในที่สุด

พันธุ์ไม้ที่ปลูกจะเป็นพันธุ์ไม้พื้นถิ่นภาคเหนือที่เหมาะกับการ

ปลูกในเมืองเชียงใหม่ ง่ายต่อการดูแลรักษา ทางกลุ่มยังแนะนำา

ประโยชน์และสรรพคุณให้ด้วย อย่างเช่น ถ้าคุณปลูกมะค่าโมง

ซึ่งเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดใหญ่ สูง 10-18 เมตร เมื่อโตขึ้นกิ่งก้าน

จะใหญ่โต มีความแข็งแรงมาก และสามารถสร้างบ้านทาร์ซาน

บนง่ามต้นมะค่าโมงได้ หรือโปร่งฟ้า ลอดฟ้า ที่สามารถเด็ดยอด

อ่อนมาเคี้ยวกินเพื่อลดความอยากบุหรี่ลง

นอกจากการปลูกต้นไม้แล้ว มือเย็นเมืองเย็นยังมีกิจกรรม

อื่นๆ อย่างการร่วมพูดคุยแลกเปลี่ยนความรู้ เปิดรับพื้นที่สำ าหรับ

การปลูกต้นไม้ มีดนตรีเล่นสด จบด้วยการแจกกล้าไม้หรือปลูก

ต้นไม้ร่วมกัน จากจุดเริ่มต้นที่ต้องการปลูกต้นไม้ 2,000 ต้นด้วย

มือของคนกลุ่มหนึ่งที่มีใจรักจริง จนถึงวันนี้มีคนขอกล้าไม้

จำานวนมากเพื่อไปปลูกให้เป็นป่าหรือสวนขนาดใหญ่ และ

โครงการก็ยังดำาเนินต่อไปไม่มีหยุด ซึ่งเป็นการกระตุ้นจิตสำานึก

ค้นหาคำาว่า มือเย็นเมืองเย็น

For months a page entitled Meuyen has caught the attention of

Thai facebookers far and wide. The guerilla project originated from

a small group of people in Chiang Mai who wanted to promote the

value of trees and greenery. They came up with the idea of challenging

three friends to plant trees and pass on the challenge to their friends.

The initiative has now become popular with people of all professions.

This project is not only about planting to garner “likes”. The Meuyen

(or Meuyen Muengyen) project aims to create understanding about

sustainable ways of planting trees. No matter what type of plant, every

life form needs attention. Chosen trees in this project are local species

in Chiang Mai that are easy to take care of. The Meuyen people also

provide basic knowledge about each tree’s benefits. For example, a

local tree called Maka Mong (Afzelia xylocarpa) which can reach 10-

18 metres when fully grown, has branches strong enough to build a

treehouse that tarzan would be proud of. The Prong Fah or Lod Fah

(Murraya Siamensis Craib) has leaves that can be chewed to reduce

cravings for smoking.

Apart from tree planting, Meuyen includes other activities including

talks, open houses and live music. Most events end by handing out

saplings or with tree planting. With an initial aim to plant 2,000 trees

in Chiang Mai, the success of the Meuyen project has gone far beyond

expectations. More and more people have joined in, and the project

continues to propagate. Meuyen helps educate people in the simplest

form. You just need some information and have a little bit of courage
