Greetings,

On August 12 this year, we celebrate Her Majesty

Queen Sirikit’s Birthday. On behalf of the management

and staff at Thai Smile Airways, I would like to extend

our warmest regards as we wish for the Queen’s continued

health and prosperity during this grand occasion.

August is an important month for Thailand, as it

is not only our Queen’s birthday but also Mother’s

Day. Many citizens take this opportunity to visit their

mothers and participate in water blessing ceremonies.

The employees of THAI Smile and I wish for the safe

travels of all our passengers, and we sincerely hope

that you enjoy the special desserts created by the chefs

of THAI CATERING for this auspicious day.

In the past, THAI Smile participated in many

activities across the country with our passengers. One

activity we are especially honoured to be a part of was

the transport of a ceremonial Lent Candle summoned

by HM The King of Thailand and ceremonial Buddhist

Monk Robes on behalf of HRH Princess Maha Chakri

Sirindhorn for the annual Lent Candle Festival in Ubon

Ratchathani 2015. In addition, THAI Smile sponsored

the Miss Universe Thailand 2015 pageant by flying the

contestants from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani.

We also wish to introduce our passengers to Yim

Yim an Interactive Voice Response system developed

especially for passengers of THAI Smile. Yim Yim will

provide information about flights and travel promotions

via the Smile Call Center at 02 118 8888. And in order

to facilitate check-in, passengers can check in online

at (www.thaismileair.com) for all routes from August

7 onwards.

In this edition of WE Smile Magazine, we take

you to the province of Udon Thani, which is fast

becoming the centre of AEC. We also feature beautiful

resorts from around the world which cater to

families. Of course, WE Smile is also packed with

informative and entertaining articles about travel and

คราฟต์และสิ่งแวดล้อม ผลงานชิ้นนี้ถูกนำาไปจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการ Eco A

Mano ในงานมิลานแฟร์ที่ประเทศอิตาลีเมื่อกลางปีที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งก็ได้รับความ

สนใจจากผู้ชมอย่างล้นหลามเลยทีเดียว

We have to admit that eco design is definitely in. One recent

innovative object is this Mobella hammock made of scattered

leather patches. The hammock was created under the concept

of Slow Hand Design, or design that combines an eco-friendly

concept with craftsmanship. The idea was initiated by the

Department of International Trade Promotion, a governmental

body that has pioneered eco-friendly design. The hammock

was recently exhibited at the Eco A Mano showcase in Salone

del Mobile, Milan and was welcomed with positive feedback.

As the French writer Marcel

Proust described in his book ‘In

Search of Lost Time’, “Flavour could

bring you back to young sweet

memories”, and for Jeremy Cayron

and Jerome Deconinck, two chefs

Sofitel Sukhumvit Bangkok, that

flavour comes from simple menus

from their childhood made by their

grandmothers. This is what started

the idea of “Grandmother’s Recipe”,

the new special international menu

from Voila! restaurant. “Good food

does not need to be complicated,

on the other hand, it can bring

us back to the good old days,

making us feel like we’re home.

For those who are away from home,

just hearing about local food can

make their eyes sparkle”, chef

Jeremy from L’Appart told us. He

continued, “we are pleased to offer

customers the kind of food that we

personally bond to, moreover, we

want Thai people to try homemade

international food and give them recipes

they can recreate themselves.”

French representatives, Chef Jeremy

and Chef Jerome proudly present nine

special menus which are inherited

from their grandmothers: Bouillabaisse,

Farcement Savoyard, Oeuf & La Neige,

Crème caramel, a French dessert

topped with many types of fruits in

order to cut the sweetness. “It helps

you not feel so guilty, and that is the

French way,” Chef Jeremy happily said.

Following the “Cuisine on Stage”

concept of Voila! restaurant, the

“Grandmother’s Recipe” menus will

be cooked live in an open kitchen by

the chefs. After the French theme this

week, Thai food will be featured in

August. There will also be an exclusive

chef “definitely a famous one,” Chef

Jeremy said. The international buffet

menu including Grandmother’s Recipe

The images of gods, familiar characters

or even the Mona Lisa are splendidly recreated

on the rice fields of Aomori, Japan.

This project has brought fame and revived

this sleepy little town—whose economic

system depends on agriculture—in the

most intriguing way. The art pieces are

created by using more than ten varieties of

rice in seven different colours like yellow,

green and purple. With the colour gradient

technique, the shapes become more visible

in this natural canvas.

The project has boosted tourism in an

unprecedented way, and the town has

come back to life. Farmers are able to support

themselves and pass on their knowhow

to another generation. The town of

Aomori has become a pilot study for other

towns to integrate natural art into tourism.

Rice, which is at the heart of the town’s

economy, is still respected and revered

and this is one testament that shows how

art and nature can touch people’s hearts.

The Rice Paddy Art Festival is held from

July 1 to October 12, but the best time to go

is during mid-July to mid-August. If possible,

climb the tower for the best views.

วิญญรัตน์ ทําให้เรารู้สึกเหมือนได้เดินเข้าไปในโลกส่วนตัว

ของคนๆหนึ่งมากกว่าที่จะเดินเข้าไปในนิทรรศการศิลปะ

ในวันเปิดนิทรรศการที่ Serindia Gallery นั้นเต็มไปด้วยบรรดา

ญาติมิตรและเพื่อนสนิทที่เจ้าของงานคุ้นเคย ในขณะที่ลูกๆ แฝด

สามของเธอวิ่งเล่นไปรอบๆ ดูคล้ายกับเป็นงานวันเกิดหรือโอกาส

พิเศษของใครสักคน ซึ่งตัวเธอเองก็ยืนยันว่างานนี้มีความหมายกับ

เธอมาก “เป็นนิทรรศการเดี่ยวครั้งแรกของมุกค่ะ ก็เลยอยากเชิญ

อย่างที่ชื่อบอก นิทรรศการสิ่งทอ Womb นี้ได้แรงบันดาล-

ใจมาจากสิ่งที่มีค่ามากที่สุดของเธอ นั่นก็คือลูกๆ “มุกเองคิดว่า

ศิลปะนั้นต้องเล่าเรื่องราวได้ และตลอดเวลาเราเล่าเรื่องของคนอื่น

ผ่านงานมาตลอด คราวนี้เราก็อยากเล่าเรื่องของตัวเองบ้าง”

เพลินจันทร์ผู้เป็นหัวเรือใหญ่ของบริษัทดีไซน์ Beyond Living

กล่าว “มุกเลยคุยกับสามี ที่จริงงานนี้ต้องเรียกว่าเป็นนิทรรศการ

ร่วมของเราสองคนมากกว่า เขาก็ถามเราว่าอะไรที่มีความหมายกับ

เรามากที่สุด เราก็ตอบได้ทันทีว่าลูก” เพลินจันทร์จึงเริ่มกลับไปดู

ภาพอัลตร้าซาวด์ของลูกๆ ที่มีลักษณะแตกต่างกันไปในแต่ละ

สัปดาห์ ก่อนที่จะตีความออกมาผ่านผลงานสิ่งทอสีสันสดใสที่ทํา

ขึ้นมาจากเศษผ้าเหลือใช้ที่เธอเก็บไว้ ซึ่งกว่าจะสร้างสรรค์ผลงาน

ได้เสร็จสิ้นตามที่ต้องการก็กินเวลากว่า 2 ปี

เพลินจันทร์กล่าวว่า การได้ทํานิทรรศการนี้ทําให้ความคิดของ

เธอเปลี่ยนไปเหมือนกัน “เมื่อก่อนคิดว่าการจะเป็นศิลปินได้นี่ต้องมี

ความโกรธ ต้องเก็บกด ตัดหูตัวเองบ้าง หรือซึมเศร้าบ้าง ชีวิตเรามี

ความสุขดีอยู ่แล้วจะเป็นศิลปินกับเขาได้เหรอ” เพลินจันทร์พูดยิ้มๆ

“แต่พอได้ทํางานนี้จริงๆแล้ว มุกยิ่งมั่นใจว่าเราทําได้ และก็รู้สึกว่าเรา

เป็นผู ้หญิงที่โชคดี มีสามีที่รัก และมีลูกเป็นแรงบันดาลใจ”

Strolling through Ploenchan Winyaratn's

exhibition is like walking into her personal life.

At the launch event at Serindia Gallery, the

scene seemed more like a birthday party or

special occasion, as the room was packed

with family members and friends. The artist

herself admits that this means a lot to her. "It

is my first solo exhibition, so I wanted to invite

only those close to me, people that have seen

me since I was a child. I wanted to show them

how my life has changed. I used to be quite a

rebellious teen." Like the title suggests, the

"Womb" exhibition is inspired by things that

mean the most to her. "For me, art has to tell a story. My previous work

told the stories of others, so this time I took the chance to tell my own

story," said Ploenchan, designer of Beyond Living. "So I talked to my

husband. Actually this exhibition should be considered a joint exhibition for

the two of us. He asked me what means the most to me, and I didn't

even have to think. The answer was the kids," she started by looking

through ultrasounds and translated them into a series of textile art pieces

created from leftover materials from her office. The process took two

years to complete.

Ploenchan mentions that the exhibition also made her think differently.

"Back then, I thought that if you wanted to be a good artist, you had to be

driven and feel negative things, like anger and suppression. You have to

cut off your ear, or be depressed. I have a happy life, so I wasn’t sure if I

could be an artist," smiles Ploenchan, "but once I started working, I

realized that it was possible. I'm a lucky woman to have a loving husband

and kids that are my greatest inspiration."

มหกรรมภาพถ่าย ‘Photo Bangkok’ เริ่มต้นขึ้นอย่าง

เป็นทางการเมื่อวันที่ 29 กรกฎาคมที่ผ่านมา เทศกาล

ภาพถ่ายที่เกิดมาจากการร่วมมือของสองศิลปินไทย

อย่างปิยทัต เหมทัต และมานิต ศรีวานิชภูมิ นี้ถูกออกแบบมา

ให้พลิกบทบาทวงการศิลปะและการถ่ายภาพในประเทศไทย

หลังจากใช้เวลาบ่มเพาะและระดมทุนกว่า 3 ปีเต็มโดยทีมงาน

กลุ่มเล็กๆ ที่สามารถฟันฝ่าอุปสรรคความท้าทายมากมายเพื่อ

สานฝันของพวกเขาที่จะทำาให้กรุงเทพฯ เป็นศูนย์กลางของการ

สร้างสรรค์ภาพถ่าย

ปิยทัตกล่าวว่า “โครงการนี้พัฒนามาจากความคิดเล่นๆ ผม

เปิดแกลเลอรี่ RMA มา 5 ปีแล้ว และผมก็เริ่มคิดว่ายังมีอะไร

ที่ผมสามารถทำาได้อีกบ้าง มีสิ่งหนึ่งที่ผมคิดมาตลอดคือการ

สนับสนุนช่างภาพมือสมัครเล่น สร้างสถานที่ให้พวกเขามาจัด

แสดงผลงาน มีสองอย่างที่ทำาได้คือเรื่องของเงินทุน ดูจากงบ

ประมาณแล้วผมคิดว่ามีความเป็นไปได้และคุ้มค่าที่จะพยายาม

ทำา ไม่แน่ใจว่าจะออกมายังไงเหมือนกัน แต่ก็อยากลองดูครับ”

นอกจากจะเพื่อกระตุ้นพลังแห่งความคิดสร้างสรรค์ สร้าง-

เวทีให้แสดงออก รวมถึงนำาเสนอโอกาสสำาหรับการเรียนรู้และ

การร่วมมือแล้ว มานิตกล่าวว่าโครงการนี้ยังมีวัตถุประสงค์

อีกประการ “เราอยากจะดึงดูดผู้ชมที่ชื่นชอบการชมภาพถ่าย

ตามแกลเลอรี่ต่างๆ แปลกมากที่ผู้ซื้อในไทยมักจะไม่ชื่นชอบ

ภาพถ่ายในรูปแบบอื่น และที่แปลกกว่านั้นคือภาพถ่ายเป็นส่วน

July 29 marks the beginning of the premiere edition of ‘Photo

Bangkok’. Brain-child of two prominent Thai artists—Piyatat Hemmatat

and Manit Sriwanichpoom—this festival is designed to play a

pivotal role in Thailand’s art and photography landscape. For a small

close knit team, the project took 3 full years, as well as a mammoth

amount of research, fundraising, and sponsorship initiatives. The

team persisted through several challenges to make dreams into

reality by developing an event which is likely to establish Bangkok

as the regional hub of image-making.

“It actually evolved from a smaller idea. I had RMA gallery now

for 5 years and was constantly thinking about doing more. One of

the things I always wanted to do is give support to emerging photographers.

I wanted to create an event where they can show their

work, select one or two promising ones, then fund and support

them. With all the available resources, I saw there was a possibility

and felt that it might be worth the attempt. I was not sure what

would happen but I wanted to try,” said Piyatat.

Apart from stimulating artistic energy and making a creative

platform, Manit mentions that this festival has another aim as

well. “We want bring in audiences who would usually run screaming

from a photography gallery. Strangely enough, in Thailand,

art-buyers tend to not appreciate photography as much as other

หนึ่งของสังคมไทยมาสักพักแล้ว” เขาได้อธิบายเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับ

นิทรรศการ ‘ปรมาจารย์ที่ถูกลืม’ ว่านิทรรศการนี้มุ่งนำาเสนอ

ผลงานของปรมาจารย์ยุคเก่าและอิทธิพลของ ‘ครู’ เหล่านี้ต่อสังคม

สมัยใหม่ อีกสิ่งที่น่าสนใจคือการที่อาจารย์พุทธทาสภิกขุ หนึ่ง

ในพระสงฆ์ที่มีอิทธิพลต่อชาวไทยใช้ภาพถ่ายถ่ายทอดคำาสอน

ของท่านแก่พุทธศาสนิกชน นอกจากนี้ยังมีการจัดแสดงผลงาน

ของศิลปินภาพถ่ายด้านต่างๆ ตั้งแต่ช่างภาพสารคดีไปจนถึงช่าง

ภาพแฟชั่นกว่า 60 ชีวิต ในพื้นที่ 20 แห่งทั่วกรุงเทพฯ

“ในปัจจุบันคุณไม่จำาเป็นต้องเรียนรู้เทคนิคการถ่ายภาพ

หรอก มันถูกประดิษฐ์สำาเร็จมาจากโรงงานแล้ว เพียงเข้าสู่โหมด

อัตโนมัติจากนั้นก็ถ่ายได้ตามใจชอบเลย แต่ผมมีความหวังใน

วงการภาพถ่ายในอนาคตของไทย แม้ว่าจะค่อยเป็นค่อยไป

แต่ก็อยากเห็นช่างภาพทั้งหลายสร้างสรรค์ผลงานที่น่าสนใจ

ออกมา และพัฒนาคณะเกี่ยวกับการถ่ายภาพในมหาวิทยาลัย

ต่างๆด้วย” มานิตอธิบายเพ่ิม ก่อนที่ปิยทัตจะเสริมว่า “ผมหวัง

เป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าจะสามารถช่วยพัฒนากลุ่มคนที่รักในความคิด

สร้างสรรค์ต่อไป และการที่จะทำาเช่นนั้นได้พวกเรามีกล้อง

ถ่ายรูปนี่แหละเป็นเครื่องมือ”

‘Photo Bangkok’ ยินดีที่จะเสนอโอกาสให้กับช่างภาพ

ทั้งหลายที่จะเรียนรู้ พัฒนาและจัดตั้งกลุ่มเล็กๆขึ้น ที่สำ าคัญที่สุด

คือปลุกความเป็นเด็กในตัวเรา ค้นพบตัวเองและสนุกสนานไปกับ

การสร้างสรรค์ภาพถ่ายทุกๆวินาที แล้วพบกันระหว่างวันที่ 29

กรกฎาคม ถึงวันที่ 4 ตุลาคมนี้

art-forms, something rather surprising keeping in mind photography

has been a part of Thai society for a while.” A special exposition,

‘Rediscovering forgotten Thai masters of photography’ revives the

work of old Thai masters and their relevance in contemporary

society. It was intriguing to note how Ajarn Buddhadasa Bhikkhu,

one of the most influential Thai Buddhist monks, used photography

as a means to communicate his teachings. Other exhibitions

feature the works of 60 artists with a variety of expertises, from

documentary to fashion photography, in more than 20 venues.

“In present times, you do not really need to know anything about

the technical side of photography. It’s all done in the factory. You

can just put it in auto mode and there you go. But, I am hopeful of

the future of photography, specially in Thailand. Although slow, we

have seen more art photographers coming up with interesting work.

In a few good universities, a faculty of photography is being

established,” said Manit, while Piyatat added, “We truly hope to

be able to elevate the development of our creative community

through generations, and in doing such, our tool is photography.”

‘Photo Bangkok’ is poised to offer that much needed opportunity

for photographers to learn, develop, form a closer art community

and most importantly, bring out that inner child in us. It helps us

to rediscover ourselves and cherish the joy of making an image,

every hundredth of a second. The festival runs untill October 4.

ก่อนจบการศึกษาที่คณะมัณฑนศิลป์ สาขานิเทศศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากรค่ะ

ตอนที่กำาลังหาข้อมูลอ้างอิงบังเอิญได้ไปเจอหนังสือ ‘ดอกไม้ไทย’ ที่จัดทำาโดย

คุณสกุล อินทกุล ผู้ก่อตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์วัฒนธรรมดอกไม้แห่งแรกของโลก เป็นหนังสือที่

รวบรวมรูปภาพศิลปะงานดอกไม้ไทยที่สวยมากไว้ นี่จึงเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นในแรงบันดาล-

ใจของโปรเจ็กต์นี้ค่ะ” วิรินเล่าให้เราฟัง เพื่อทำาให้ผลงานแตกต่างจากคนอื่น เธอจึง

ตัดสินใจตีความความงามของดอกไม้ไทยออกมาผ่านงานเปเปอร์คราฟต์ซึ่งต้องใช้

ความพิถีพิถันไม่แพ้การจัดดอกไม้จริง โดยขั้นตอนในการสร้างสรรค์ผลงานจะเริ่ม-

ต้นขึ้นจากการหารูปแบบของการพับกระดาษต่างๆให้สอดคล้องกับดอกไม้แต่ละ

ชนิด รวมไปถึงดัดแปลงการพับให้ได้รูปทรงที่ต้องการ เมื่อกรีดแพตเทิร์นให้เป็น

รอยแล้วจึงค่อยๆ พับด้วยมือทีละส่วน แล้วค่อยนำ าแต่ละส่วนมาประกอบกันอีกที

โดยวิรินเลือกใช้รูปทรงเรขาคณิตและสีสันมาแทนดอกไม้ชนิดต่างๆ

“เราอยากให้คนไทยหันมาสนใจในเรื่องของศิลปะไทยที่อยู่รอบๆตัวมากขึ้น

การนำาเสนอของเราจึงต้องมีการพัฒนารูปแบบให้ดูทันสมัยและน่าสนใจยิ่งขึ้นค่ะ”

วิรินกล่าว “ตอนที่ทำาศิลปนิพนธ์ คนที่บ้านเห็นก็ชอบ เราก็เลยจริงจังเลย พอเริ่ม

ออกสู่สายตาคนภายนอกก็ได้รับผลตอบรับดีมากค่ะ อย่างล่าสุดที่ทาง TCDC ได้

นำาผลงานของเราไปจัดแสดงในงานดีไซน์วีค D’Days ที่ปารีสด้วย มีชาวต่างชาติ

ถ่ายรูปลงอินสตาแกรม เพื่อนเราไปเห็นเขาก็เอามาให้เราดู ดีใจมากค่ะที่คนให้

ความสนใจ” ฟังดูอาจจะเป็นเรื่องเล็กๆ ของนักออกแบบคนหนึ่ง แต่ถ้ามองในมุม

กว้างแล้ว ผลงาน ‘พับ เพียบ เรียบ ร้อย’ ไม่เป็นเพียงงานดีไซน์สุดเก๋จาก

ประเทศไทยเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นเหมือนทูตทางวัฒนธรรมที่ช่วยเผยแพร่ความเป็น

ไทยออกสู่สายตาชาวโลกด้วย

เมื่อเราถามถึงของขวัญสำ าหรับวันแม่เมื่อปีที่ผ่านมานั้น วิรินตอบว่า “เราก็ให้พวงมาลัย

กระดาษที่เราทำาให้กับคุณแม่ เพราะเราถือว่าเราทำาเอง เราพับเอง เป็นความตั้งใจ

ของเราที่จะทำาให้คุณแม่ น่าจะสื่อถึงความในใจที่เราต้องการจะให้คุณแม่ได้มากกว่า

การไปซื้อดอกไม้มาให้ค่ะ” สำาหรับปีนี้ ใครที่ยังไม่มีของขวัญให้คุณแม่ เวิร์คช็อป

The clear voice of artist Wirin Chaowana,

creator of the ‘Pab Piab Rieb Roi’ project

that was recently showcased at a prestigious

French design fair, came through the

phone as she started to speak about the

project’s beginning. It started from her

passion for traditional Thai floral art and

paper craft. Combined together, the

results are modern, cutting-edge, and

just perfect for special occasions like

Mother’s Day.

“The project was born from my

graduate thesis for my communication

design studies at the Faculty of Decorative

Arts, Silpakorn University. When I was

doing research, I came across the Thai

Flowers book by Sakul Intakul, creator

of the world’s first Museum of Floral

Culture. I was so impressed with the

Thai floral arts that I came up with my

own project: Pab Piab Riab Roi,” said

Wirin. To create these exceptional works,

she added a twist by interpreting the

beauty of floral arts though paper crafting,

a kind of art that is as delicate as traditional

floral arrangement. The process starts

with creating the right patterns for the

flowers. After the pattern is done, the

paper is folded into shape by hand.

To differentiate each kind of flower,

Wirin opted for different geometric

shapes and colours.

“I want Thai people to pay more

attention to the Thai arts that surround

us everywhere in our daily lives,” said

Wirin. “When my family saw what I

did for my thesis, they really loved it,

so I began to take it seriously. When

the public saw it, they appreciated it

too. Recently, Pab Piab Riab Roi was

chosen by TCDC to be on display in

the D’Days Festival in Paris and my

friends said there were people who

took photos and posted them on

Instagram. That meant so much to

me.” This may sounds like a small

step of success for a young designer,

but looking closely, Pab Piab Riab Roi

is not only an example of chic design

from Thailand, but also acts as a

bridge that helps promote Thai

traditions in the international arena.

When asked what she gave her

mother on Mother’s Day last year,

Wirin said that it was definitely her

paper floral garland.“I made it myself

and it was created especially for

her, I thought my mom would like

it more than real flowers.”

This year, the upcoming Pab

Piab Riab Roi workshop is open

something special for the ladies of

How did this project start?

เราชอบเดินทาง ทุกครั้งที่เดินทางจะชอบเขียน

โปสการดหาตัวเอง และหาลูกชายอายุ 12 ‘หมื่นไมล’

ที่บานเรามีตูเหล็กเก็บเอกสารอยูใบหนึ่ง ทั้งตู

จะมีโปสการดติดไวเต็มไปหมด จนกระทั่งเมื่อเรา

พาเขาออกเดินทางดวย ก็จะชวนใหเขาเขียนหาตัว

เองเหมือนกัน ‘เขียนอะไรก็ไดลูก เขียนไปเถอะ’

เพราะเอาเขาจริง มันไมไดสําคัญวาใครจะเขียน

อะไร แตมันสําคัญที่เขาไดเก็บความทรงจํากลับ

บานมาเปนแผนกระดาษดวย แผนกระดาษที่เขา

เปนคนเลือกเอง เขียนเอง และสงเอง ซึ่งแนนอน

... เขาเองจะเปดกลองไปรษณีย และหยิบมันมา

We like to travel, and every time we did, we

would write a postcard back home to my son

‘Mueanmile’ or ‘ten thousand miles’) who was

twelve. At home we have a fi ling cabinet full of

postcards. When he was old enough to travel

with us, we told him to write cards back to

himself as well. I told him, “write what you

want, write anything. What matters is the memories

created that will follow this piece of paper,

which you selected yourself.” Sure enough,

when we returned home there were these

cards in our mailbox, and he could read them

to remember the journey.

These days communication is easy. When

you want to talk to someone it just takes a

few clicks. But think for a while, when

someone sends you a postcard they have to

fi nd the right card, the right pen… it requires

a seat to write, and once you sit you need to

take time to fi t the words into that small

space. Then there are stamps, in many

countries you can only get these at the post

offi ce… imagine all of this. When someone

sends us a postcard, it’s worth so much for

the sender and receiver.

เอง เขาจะถือมัน เดินตรงเขามาในบาน นั่งลงที่

โซฟา อานทุกใบทันทีอยางตั้งใจ หลังจากอาน

โปสการด เขาจะเกิดคําถามมากมาย ไมวาจะเรื่อง

ราวของวัฒนธรรม ความโดดเดน ของประเทศตน-

ทางนั้นๆ รวมไปถึงตัวผูสงจํานวนมาก ที่หมื่นไมล

เองก็ไมเคยรูจักมากอน ไมเคยเห็นหนา จะเรียก

วาคนแปลกหนาก็ได แตทันทีที่เห็นลายมือและ

สํานวนในการเขียน เขากลับรูไดในทันทีวาสงมา

จากใคร (บางคนเคยสงมามากกวาสามใบ)

ปจจุบัน หมื่นไมลจึงมีเพื่อนมากมาย เพื่อนจาก

ขอความบนกระดาษ ทั้งในและนอกประเทศ มัน

คือเรื่องเลาบนกระดาษที่เปรียบเสมือนหนึ่งหนา

ชีวิต ในรูปแบบชอรตโนต

It’s now a routine for him to check his mailbox

everyday, when he gets a postcard he would

read every word carefully. He gets very

curious about the country, culture and origins

of the postcard. Since he’s never seen the

writer, you could call them a stranger, but

he starts to recognize the handwriting and

writing styles. He starts to recognize writers

(some people have sent over three postcards.)

Mueanmile has so many friends both within

and outside the country, just from reading

these stories in short-note form.

For yourself, what was the most valuable

lesson learned from travel?

No plan is the best plan เปนคําจํากัดความที่

นาจะใชและตรงที่สุดในรูปแบบการเดินทางของ

เรา เปลาเซอร เปลาติสต อยางที่ใครบอก แตคน

เราแตละคนมีเบาหลอมของชีวิตที่ตางกันซึ่งหลอม

ใหเราโตมาเปนเราในแบบทุกวันนี้ ซึ่งลักษณะตัว

ตนเราคอนขางเปนคนไมมีแผน ไมมี 123

ขนาดแผนที่ ยังไมดูเลย เคยดูอยูสามสี่ครั้งในชีวิต

และพบวา เราโงเรื่องแผนที่มาก ยิ่งดูยิ่งเสียเวลา

งั้นก็อยาไปดูมันเลย ไปมันเรื่อยๆนั่นละ รวมทั้ง

เราเองก็ไมใชคนที่คาดหวังวาจะตองเจออะไรจาก

การเดินทาง เราเชื่อในขอหนึ่งเสมอวา ทุกชีวิตมี

เสนบางเสนที่มองไมเห็นไดขีดกําหนดไวใหเราแลว

ถามันใช เดี๋ยวก็เจอ ถาไมใช มันก็หลง และ

เมื่อหลง ก็ตองใชประสบการณการเดินทางที่ผาน

มาในชีวิตเอาตัวรอดใหได

No plan is the best plan. This is the truest

statement I think there is. Everyone is molded

diff erently. I never used maps or strict itineraries

(no 123 for me), I might have looked at them

three or four times in my life. I think the more

you look at maps the more time consuming it

is. I also don’t expect to fi nd anything while

travelling. I believe that every life has a destiny

already written, if that’s correct, then we’ll fi nd it,

and if not, we get lost. If we get lost, we have

to use our own experiences to get us through

the journey. The best plans always change.

surprised to know that the

brand was actually founded

by two Thai women. The

name ‘ORN’ comes from a

Thai word that means

‘beautiful woman.’

And what suits beautiful

women more than fl owers?

“When we studied at Rajini

School, we had to learn

how to make different kinds

of fl ower garlands. It’s sad

that this kind of craft is

fading away. So we wanted

to revive the traditional Thai

fl ower craft through our

fragrance brand,” said

Panyada Ruengskul,

co-founder of ORN, the

brand she created with her

long-time friend Orawan

Pisitkasem.

ORN might not be a

household name in

Thailand yet, but the brand

has thrived in Europe for

some time. The fragrances

were developed in France

by award-winning

perfumers. “We are also

opening a pop-up store in

Paris this September,”

added Panyada.

ORN has a product line

that include perfumes,

ornamental perfumes and

home fragrances, all of

which are inspired by the

ancient custom of royal

Thai women who decorate

themselves and their homes

with scented fl owers. The

reason behind the beautiful

packaging lies in the

founders’ intention to create

products that can uplift

their surroundings, akin to

fresh fl owers. ORN will

person” or a “sea type of person”?

A: Maybe it’s because I’m from

Phuket, but I am defi nitely a “sea

person”. When I was a child, my

dad and mom always took me to the

beach. I like to sunbathe, swim and I

love coconut juice! Recently our family

went to the Maldives together. With

my career, I go to the beach often,

but mostly for work, not for leisure.

การเขียนลายรดน้ ำานี ้เริ ่มปรากฏหลักฐานมาตั ้งแต่สมัย

สุโขทัยซึ่งเริ่มมีการค้าขายกับจีน เริ่มเจริญรุ่งเรืองและได้รับ

การยกย่องว่าเป็นงานฝีมือชั้นบรมครูในสมัยอยุธยาช่วงพุทธ-

ศตวรรษที่ 22-23 สืบเรื่อยมาจนกระทั่งในช่วงต้นสมัยกรุง

รัตนโกสินทร์ที ่ได้มีการฟื ้นฟูศิลปะแขนงนี ้ภายใต้

พระราชูปถัมภ์ในรั้วราชสำานักให้กลับมาเฟื่องฟูอีกครั้งหนึ่ง

ประกอบกับการได้ติดต่อกับนานาชาติมากขึ้น ศิลปะลาย-

รดน้ำาบางส่วนที่พลิกแพลงและได้รับอิทธิพลจากจีนและชาติ

ตะวันตกจึงผสมผสานเข้ากับลวดลายไทยได้อย่างลงตัวและ

สนุกสนานมากขึ้น แต่เมื่อเกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง

เมื่อปีพ.ศ. 2475 และรัฐบาลมุ่งเน้นให้ชาติมีความเป็นอริยะ

มากขึ้น ศิลปะดังกล่าวยังคงได้รับการสืบต่อทว่าอยู่ในหมู่คน

ที่สนใจเพียงเท่านั้น ความเข้าใจที่มีต่อศิลปะการเขียนลาย

ของสะสมส่วนพระองค์ในสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ

Amongst Thailand’s unique crafts is the

intricate technique of Lacquer Work (Lai

Rod Nam), considered one of the ten cardinal

disciplines of Thai art or ‘Chang Sib

Mhoo’. The words ‘Lai Rod Nam’ (washed

pattern) does not refer to the designs, but

instead comes from the technique of gold

leafing, which requires that the piece be

cleansed with water. This technique can be

used on small items to large murals. The

pieces not only demonstrate great skill, but

also the attitude of the Thai people, their

cultural diversity, the ideals of Buddhism,

and perhaps most importantly represents

a link to disappearing historic traditions.

Evidence of lacquer work can be traced

to the Sukhothai period, when Thailand

began trading with China. It flourished

during the Ayutthaya period of the 16th and

17th century, and received royal support in

the early Rattanakosin period. As Thailand

came into contact with other nations, the

lacquerware became influenced by Chinese

and western art. However, with a governmental

change in 1932, and a new policy

focused on economic industry, this art form

was only practised by those who had a

personal interest, and the art of lacquer

work was lost to most Thais. The Queen

Sirikit Museum of Textiles showcases a lacquerware

piece detailing the story of Hanuman

from Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s

collection. With the help of a professor from

the Palace College for Craftsmen, a demonstration

of these ancient techniques was

เตรียมวัสดุที่ตองการจะเขียนลายโดยเช็ดให

สะอาด หลังจากนั้นจึงนําดินสอพองผสมน้ําและ

นํามาเช็ดทั่วพื้นผิวอีกครั้งเพื่อขจัดคราบมัน

Materials are fi rst cleaned. A mixture

of kaolin powder (chalk) and water is

rubbed on the surface of the lacquer

work to absorb any grease that may

hinder adhesion. When the chalk dries,

the piece is cleaned with a cloth.

The prototype pattern is outlined on

tracing paper, then a needle is used

to perforate the paper according to

the lines. This paper is placed over

the item’s surface and a chalk powder

is applied. When the paper is removed

the patterns are left behind. This

same technique is used to produce

fi ne European garments.

การลงลายถือเปนขั้นตอนสําคัญที่ตองใชสมาธิ

และความชํานาญเปนอยางมาก โดยเลือกใช

พูกันปลายเล็กแหลมจุมน้ํายาหรดาลสีเหลืองใน

This step requires skill and focus.

Using a small paintbrush with a sharp

tip, the pattern is traced with a yellow

solution called ‘Horadan’. This solution

is created from an alkaline mineral

that repels gold. The spots where this

solution is painted is where the gold

leaf will not stick.

เมื่อลงลายดวยน้ํายาหรดาลเรียบรอยแลวนั้น

จึงนําดินสอพองมาเช็ดใหทั่วอีกครั้งเหมือนใน

ขั้นตอนที่ 1 หลังจากนั้นจึงใชผาสะอาดชุบยาง

รักและทาลงบนลวดลายใหทั่วบริเวณที่ตองการ

จะปดทอง หลังจากนั้นจึงใชทองคําเปลวแท

คอยๆปดลงไปทีละแผนอยางประณีตและใหทั่ว

ถึง หากมั่นใจวาทุกสวนปดทองเรียบรอยแลว

After painting on the solution, chalk is

used to clean the piece again. Then,

‘rak’ (lacquer) is painted over the area

to be gilded. Genuine gold leaf is then

carefully pressed onto the piece. To

ensure all parts are adhered evenly,

the artisans will use a fi nger dipped in

chalk to polish the gilded surface.

The fi nal stage, which gives this

art form its name, takes place

after gilding. The piece is cleaned

with water. When the yellow

solution is exposed to water, it

slowly peels off, allowing the

คุณจะต้องเดินทางไปที่ภาคตะวันออกเฉียง-

เหนือ ซึ่งในปัจจุบันเต็มไปด้วยทุ่งนาเขียวขจี

To find fossils in Thailand, you’ll have to go to

the quiet northeast. Visiting today, you’ll see

expansive rice fields dotted with farmers’ huts,

the entire area is lush green with fresh sprouts

appearing in the rainy season and golden brown

as dry season rolls around. But 200 million

years ago, this was a very different place. It was

around that time that the first dinosaurs arrived

in Isaan, and they would thrive in the fertile area

for millions of years.

Since the 1980s, Thai paleontologists in

partnership with French scientists have collected

thousands of fossils. A myriad of Asian species

were recorded, but our country is also known

for discovering previously unknown species.

Thailand has contributed to paleontology with

some of the oldest specimens found in the

world. Within the province of Chaiyaphum,

the ancient long-necked Isanosaurus made

the ground tremble millions of years before

its famous relative the Brontosaurus ever

took a breath. You might also be surprised

to learn that Thailand has its own T-Rex, the

Siamotyrannus a deadly predator that stalked

the area where Khon Kaen is today.

ถาวร จังหวัดชัยภูมิ ชื่อของมันถูกตั้งตาม

This is one of the oldest

dinosaurs to be found in Thailand.

The fossil was found in dark red

sandstone at Ban Non Thaworn,

Chaiyaphum province.

It’s named after P. Attavipach,

former Director General of the

Thai Department of Mineral

Resources.

[Compsognathus Sp]

คอมซอกนาทัสเป็นไดโนเสาร์ที่ตัวเล็ก

ที่สุดในโลก น่าเสียดายที่ชิ้นส่วนกระดูก

เพียง 2 ชิ้นถูกพบในไทย เราจึงไม่มี

ข้อมูลมากนัก จากบันทึกไดโนเสาร์

The compsognathus is the

world’s smallest dinosaur.

Unfortunately only two

fossil fragments were found

in Thailand, so we don’t

know much about this petit

creature but we can assume

that it stood on two legs and

had a long tail.

สยามโมไทรันนัส อิสานเอนซิสอยู่ใน

ตระกูลเดียวกับไทแรนโนซอรัส เร็กซ์

อันเป็นที่รัก (และน่าหวาดกลัว)

สัตว์กินเนื้อที่มีกรงเล็บขนาดใหญ่และ

มีฟันอันแหลมคมที่มีขนาดถึง 4 นิ้ว

มีอายุมากกว่าทีเร็กซ์กว่า 50 ล้านปี

แม้ตัวจะเล็กกว่าเกือบครึ่ง เมื่อตอนยืน

The Siamotyrannus is considered

a cousin of the well loved

(and feared) Tyrannosaurus

Rex. It was clearly a carnivore

with claws and large, sharp

teeth which could measure up

to four inches. It was 50 million

years older than the T-Rex

although only half the size,

standing at 7.6 metres tall. This

beast roamed the Isaan region

of Thailand, especially in Chaiyaphum

province. It was clearly

on the top of the food chain.

สยามโมซอรัสที่มีหัวดูคล้ายจระเข้และสูงถึง 9.1 เมตร

นี้ล่าปลาเป็นอาหาร และบริเวณที่พบซากฟอสซิลเองก็เคยเป็นทะเล

มาก่อน นักวิทยาศาสตร์เชื่อว่าสยามโมซอรัสใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในน้ำาเป็นหลัก

(เหมือนฮิปโปและจระเข้) โดยซากของไดโนเสาร์พันธุ์นี้ถูกพบ

ที่ภูเวียง จังหวัดชัยภูมิ

A strange looking dinosaur, the Siamosaurus has

a large crocodile-like head and stood at 9.1 metres

tall. It was likely to hunt fish because it was found

in an area that was once an inland sea. Scientists

believe that Siamosaurus lived most of their lives in

water (like hippos and crocodiles.) It was discovered

in the Phu Wiang area of Chaiyaphum province.

แก้วหรือเต่า โดยไดโนเสาร์พันธ์ุกินพืชนี้มี

ความสูงเพียงแค่ 2 เมตรเท่านั้น ซึ่งถ้า

มันมีชีวิตจริงๆ ก็นับว่าสูงกว่ามนุษย์ส่วน

ใหญ่เพียงเล็กน้อย

Discovered in Chaiyaphum

province this dinosaur is noted

for its “beak” which might

remind you of a parrot or

tortoise. It was a herbivore that

stood on two legs at a height of

just 2 metres tall. If you imagine

it today, it would be a little

taller than most humans.

[Phuwiangosaurus Sirindhornae]

เป็นไดโนเสาร์ตัวแรกที่ถูกค้นพบในประเทศไทย และได้

รับพระราชทานชื่อจากสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ

สยามบรมราชกุมารี โดยไดโนเสาร์ชนิดนี้ถูกค้นพบ

ที่ห้วยประตูตีหมา ในจังหวัดขอนแก่น และภูเวียง

โกซอรัสสิรินธรเนเป็นไดโนเสาร์ชนิดกินพืชที่มีคอ

ยาว หาง และขาขนาดใหญ่

มีความสูงประมาณ 15–20

เมตร

This was the first

dinosaur to be discovered

in Thailand and is named after HRH

Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

It was found in Huay Pratu Tee Mah

in Khon Kaen province.

Phuwiangosaurus is a dinosaur with

a distinctively long neck, tail and four

large thick legs. They are herbivores and

can grow 15-20 metres in length.

ไดโนเสาร์พันธุ์นี้ถูกตั้งชื่อตามกินรีในตำานานของไทยเพราะว่ามีเท้าเหมือนนก

จนดูคล้ายนกกระจอกเทศ เนื่องจากซากที่ขุดพบที่จังหวัดขอนแก่นไม่มีส่วน

กระโหลกศีรษะอยู่ด้วย จึงยังสรุปไม่ได้ว่าไดโนเสาร์สายพันธุ์นี้มีฟันหรือจงอย

ปากเหมือนซิตตะโกซอรัสหรือไม่

This dinosaur was named after the Thai mythical Kinnaree (a

half bird and half woman being) due to its bird-like feet. You

can also compare it to modern day ostriches. Unfortunately,

during excavations in Khon Kaen, the skull was never

discovered, so we can never be sure if it had teeth or a beak

like the Psittacosaurus.

อยากเอาเปดมาลง เพราะรูสึกวาใครเห็นเปดตัวนี้ก็มีความ

สุข และผมก็อยากใหคนมองเห็นวาอุดรธานีก็มีเรื่องราวอีก

มากมายใหมาเที่ยว มาเก็บภาพสวยๆ แลวแชรออกไปกัน

เหลืองที่ปจจุบันออกลูกออกหลานมาอีกหลายตัว

The fi rst thing that comes

to mind when many people

think of Udon Thani province

is the Red Lotus Sea in Nong

Han Kumphawapi—a sight

welcoming visitors every winter.

But perhaps the second thing

would be the giant fl oating

rubber duck in Nong Prachak

that has become an internet

sensation (especially when it

fl ew across the road during a

storm) and is now known as

the symbol of Udon Thani city.

แตเปดสันติภาพนี้เรียกไดวาเปนเพียง

จิ๊กซอวชิ้นเล็กๆของอุดรธานีในภาพใหญที่

กําลังพัฒนาอยางไมหยุดยั้ง โดยเฉพาะในสวน

ของเทศบาลเมืองอุดรธานีที่ถาไมบอกก็แทบ

จะลืมไปเลยวากําลังอยูในตางจังหวัด เพราะ

อุดรธานีในทุกวันนี้มีทั้งหางสรรพสินคาและ

คอมมิวนิตี้มอลลขนาดใหญ รวมถึงโรงพยาบาล

เอกชนชั้นนําอีกหลายแหง รานอาหาร และ

และเราก็เปนจังหวัดที่อยูในเสนทางรถไฟฟา

ความเร็วสูงดวย จึงไมแปลกที่บริษัทใหญๆ

หลายแหงเริ่มเขามาตั้งฐานหรือลงทุนทําธุรกิจ

ที่นี่ คนทองถิ่นก็มีทางเลือกเรื่องอาชีพมากยิ่ง

ขึ้น” อิทธิพนธเลาถึงปจจัยที่เกื้อหนุนการเจริญ

เติบโตของเมือง “ในขณะที่คนอุดรยุคใหม พอ

เรียนจบจากกรุงเทพฯ ก็เริ่มกลับมาลงทุนทํา

ธุรกิจที่อุดรมากกวาเกา เราจึงไดเห็นธุรกิจเอส

เอ็มอีมากมาย รานอาหารและรานกาแฟก็เยอะ

มาก เศรษฐกิจก็ขับเคลื่อนไปขางหนาเพราะมี

แตการที่จะพัฒนาเมืองใหดีไดนั้น

ทรัพยากรมนุษยยอมเปนสิ่งสําคัญ นั่นจึงเปน

เหตุผลที่วาทําไมนโยบายของเทศบาลนคร-

อุดรธานีจึงมีคนในทองถิ่นเปนศูนยกลาง

ทั้งโปรเจ็กต The Library by Beyond หรือ

หองสมุดแนวใหมที่กระตุนใหคนหันมา

สนใจการอานและใชเวลาใหเปนประโยชน

มากยิ่งขึ้น รวมถึงการสรางเสริมสุขภาพที่

ดีผานการพัฒนาแหลงออกกําลังกายอยาง

สนามฟุตบอลหญาเทียมอยางดี รวมถึง

สวนสาธารณะและเลนจักรยาน แถมทายดวย

โครงการ Udon Bike Share ที่เปดโอกาสให

ชาวทองถิ่นสมัครใชจักรยานสาธารณะไดฟรี

โดยมีจุดใหบริการ 10 จุดทั่วเมือง

“I got this idea when I saw the giant

rubber duck that travels across the world

and became a symbol of peace. Back

then, our political climate was tense, so I

thought about having a duck here in Udon

Thani as well,” said Ittipol Triwattanasuwan,

mayor of Udon Thani municipality, who

created the duck, “I thought it was cute

and could make people smile. It also

made people realise that Udon Thani has

so many things to offer. There are many

places to visit, take photos and share

beautiful moments.”

But the giant duck is just a fragment of

the bigger picture, which can be seen in

fast-growing Udon Thani. Being at the heart

of the city centre can make you forget that

you aren’t in a capital city. Udon Thani city

is packed with upscale department stores,

community malls, private hospitals, chic

cafes, restaurants, and a planetarium.

“Another factor is that the new generation

of Udon people have returned to their

roots and launched businesses here. We’re

seeing a lot of SMEs, along with endless

restaurants and cafes. When there is

more investment, the economy is pushed

forward. In terms of development, Udon

Thani province has a lot of potential. We

have an airport with fl ights every half an

hour. We also have direct fl ights to Chiang

Mai, Phuket and Hat Yai. Our province is

also on the route of the new high-speed

train system. That is why many big

companies have come here to invest and

build their bases of operation. Because of

this, local people have more choices for

work”, explained the mayor.

นอกจากจะเป็นเมืองใหญ่แห่งภูมิภาคแล้ว

อิทธิพนธ์กล่าวว่า อุดรธานียังมีศักยภาพในการ

พัฒนาตนเองให้กลายเป็นเมืองระดับภูมิภาค

โดยเฉพาะเมื่อประเทศไทยเข้าสู่ประชาคม

เศรษฐกิจอาเซียน “ตอนนี้เรากำาลังพัฒนา

หนองประจักษ์ให้กลายเป็น AEC Park โดยจะ

มีการปลูกพรรณไม้ของแต่ละประเทศให้คนได้

เข้ามาศึกษาทำาความรู้จักด้วย เรียกได้ว่าเป็น

สวนระดับภูมิภาค นอกจากนี้เรายังตั้งเป้าที่จะ

เป็นศูนย์กลางด้านการแพทย์ในระดับภูมิภาค

เนื่องจากมีโรงพยาบาลเอกชนถึง 3 แห่ง อีก

ทั้งยังมีศูนย์กายภาพบำาบัด ศูนย์ฟอกไต และ

แพทย์ทางเลือกด้วย ซึ่งเราเชื่อว่าคนจากประเทศ

เพื่อนบ้านอย่างลาวและเวียดนามจะต้องมาใช้

บริการมากขึ้นเพราะเข้าถึงได้ง่ายกว่า” อิทธิพนธ์

กล่าว ก่อนที่จะสรุปว่า “แต่ปัจจัยที่เอื้อต่อการ

รับประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียนมากที่สุดก็คือ

ชาวอุดรเอง เราอยู่กับความหลากหลายด้านเชื้อ

ชาติมาตั้งแต่สมัยที่ทหารอเมริกันมาตั้งฐานทัพ

ที่นี่ ในอุดรเองก็มีหลายชนชาติ ตั้งแต่ชาวไทย

เชื้อสายเวียดนาม ชาวลาว ชาวไทยเชื้อสายจีน

และอิสลาม แถมยังมีเขยอุดรอีก เราคุ้นเคยกับ

ชาวต่างชาติเป็นอย่างดี ผมคิดว่าข้อดีคือคนอุดร

เห็นความเปลี่ยนแปลงมาเยอะ ก็เลยไม่ยึดติด

กับภาพเก่าๆ ไม่ต่อต้านการลงทุนจากภายนอก

แถมยังสนับสนุนด้วยซ้ำา”

แต่แม้จะมองไปข้างหน้า อุดรธานีก็ยังไม่

ละท้ิงอดีต นอกจากแหล่งโบราณคดีบ้านเชียง

แล้ว อิทธิพนธ์แย้มว่าอุดรธานีอาจได้ฤกษ์

ต้อนรับมรดกโลกแห่งที่สองในเร็วๆนี้ ในขณะ

ที่พิพิธภัณฑ์เมืองอุดรธานีกำาลังอยู่ในช่วงบูรณะ

ปรับปรุงครั้งใหญ่ เมื่ออดีตและอนาคตมา

บรรจบกัน สิ่งที่ได้จึงเป็นเมืองยุคใหม่ที่ไม่ลืม

รากเหง้า ซึ่งท้ายสุดแล้วอุดรธานีจะพัฒนาไป

เป็นศูนย์กลางแห่งอาเซียนได้หรือไม่ คงต้อง

ติดตามดูกันต่อไป

Still, what makes a great city is its

people. That is why the municipality’s

considers its citizens in all policies.

They have come up with many promising

projects, including an innovative

library called “The Library by Beyond”

which is aimed at becoming a popular

hangout that embraces the reading

culture. There are also health-promoting

projects like the artificial grass

soccer stadium, public parks and bike

lanes. Last but not least is the ‘Udon

Bike Share’ project that enables locals

to use public bikes and return them

to one of 10 bike spots around the city.

Udon Thani is not only Isaan’s

main city, as Ittipol suggested, it is

also ready to be a regional hub, especially

when the country is integrated

into the upcoming Asean Economic

Community. “We are now renovating

Nong Prajak to become what we

call the ‘AEC Park’, where people of

Asean can come and study our native

plants. It will become a regional park.

Apart from that, we aim to be the

region’s medical hub since we have

three private hospitals, the chiropractic

centre, the hemodialysis centre

and the alternative medicine centre.

We believe that people from neighboring

countries like Laos and Vietnam

would choose to come here because

it’s easily accessible,” said Ittipol before

concluding, “but like always, the

most important factor is the people.

The good thing about the people of

Udon is that they are well accustomed

to foreigners since ethnic diversity has

played a large part in Udon Thani’s

history for so long. During the world

wars, the American GIs set up base

here, but Udon Thani itself has been

a melting pot long before that. Here,

there are Thais with Vietnamese

ancestry, the Laotian people, Thais

with Chinese ancestry, Islamic Thais,

and we have a group of expatriates

that have come to live with their Thai

wives who we call ‘Udon Son-in-Laws’.

So the Udon people get along very

well with foreigners and are always

ready to embrace changes. We don’t

stick to the past and don’t mind if people

from somewhere else invest here. On

the contrary, we welcome them.”

While looking forward, Udon Thani

never forgets its precious heritage.

Apart from the Ban Chiang archaeological

site, Ittipon said there is a high

chance that Udon Thani will welcome

another UNESCO World Heritage site

soon. In the meantime, Udon Thani

museum is also under major

renovation. When the past meets

the future, what we have is a

modern city that cherishes

its roots. So will Udon Thani

become a regional hub?

Teerawidtayaporn and Lalada Rungsirichokchai, Lada

Patisserie started off as a little bakery shop born from

Lalada’s passion of baking. The all-day dining menu

includes local dishes like pan omelette and Kao Piak

Dose Espresso was founded by Naowarat Khuwatchanakul or

Nim, who fell for the art of coffee making when she went to

study in Sydney and ended up with a barista certificate. She

still enjoys making coffee for clients everyday. Coffee from

Dose Espresso comes from Africa to Doi Chang, Thailand.

Cafe and Udon Thani Municipality, two organisations that

share the same vision to promote reading culture. They

decided to start off by building a lovely airconditioned library

The primary mission of Queen Sirikit Institute, the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand is to preserve

Thai Arts and Crafts, and to encourage human resource development.


การที่สิ่งๆ หนึ่งจะคงอยู่อย่างยั่งยืนโดยข้ามผ่านมรสุม

แห่งกาลเวลานั้น ย่อมต้องอาศัยแรงสนับสนุน และวัน

นี้ อาจพูดได้ว่าคนไทยรุ่นใหม่อาจไม่มีโอกาสได้ชื่นชม

กับศิลปหัตถกรรมไทยแบบดั้งเดิมได้เลยหากปราศจากมูลนิธิ

ส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรม-

ราชินีนาถ ที่มุ่งมั่นเชิดชูงานศิลป์ฝีมือคนไทยมาโดยตลอด

“ข้าพเจ้านั้นภูมิใจเสมอว่าคนไทยมีสายเลือดของช่างฝีมืออยู่

ทุกคน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นชาวไร่ชาวนา หรืออาชีพใด อยู่สารทิศใด

คนไทยมีความละเอียดอ่อนและฉับไวต่อการรับศิลปะทุกชนิด

ขอเพียงแต่ให้เขาได้มีโอกาสฝึกฝน เขาก็จะแสดงความสามารถ

ออกมาให้เห็นได้” พระราชดำารัสในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ

พระบรมราชินีนาถ และพระราชดำารัสนี้เองที่เป็นที่มาของมูลนิธิ

ส่งเสริมศิลปาชีพในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ

โดยพระองค์ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้จัดตั้งโรงฝึก

ศิลปาชีพ สวนจิตรลดาขึ้นในปีพ.ศ. 2521 (ปัจจุบันคือสถาบัน

สิริกิติ์) เพื่อพระราชทานพระราชวโรกาสให้สมาชิกครอบครัว

ชาวนาชาวไร่ที่ยากจนมาฝึกอบรมงานศิลปาชีพแขนงต่างๆ

เพื่อเพิ่มรายได้และสืบสานงานศิลปะชั้นสูงของไทยไปพร้อมๆ กัน

ด้วยวิธีนี้ ชาวบ้านจึงมีรายได้เพิ่มขึ้น ในขณะที่ศิลปะไทยเอง

ก็ไม่สูญหายไปตามกาลเวลา

Creating something that can withstand the test of

time requires external support, and without the

SUPPORT FOUNDATION of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit

of Thailand, Thailand’s future generations would

never have a chance to appreciate the country’s

magnificent traditional arts and crafts. “I am very

proud of our people. The Thais are natural artists,

no matter who they are or where they live, whether

they are farmers or professionals. Thais are also

sensitive people with an artistic talent that enables

them to swiftly absorb and develop creative skills,”

said Her Majesty the Queen. This conviction gave

birth to the SUPPORT Foundation of Her Majesty

Queen Sirikit of Thailand (now Queen Sirikit Institute)

in 1976. The SUPPORT Training Center was founded

to provide opportunities for members of impoverished

farm families, giving them the opportunity to create

various kinds of traditional Thai Artworks. In this way,

they are able to supplement their income while

preserving cultural Thai Arts.
