for such a great response

to last issue where

we celebrated our 37th anniversary of Forum Publishing.

It was quite a milestone and I want to give my thanks.

WHAT a great run we have

had over the last few decades

and I appreciate being able to

service the marketplace for

so many years and cherish

the friendships and business

relationships made. It’s good

to still be around!

HERE is what we know about

our current market. Retailing

is changing and evolving faster

than ever. With the economy strong and

employment at high numbers consumers

have money and we need to be creative to

get them shopping with us.

EVERY store needs to seriously consider

having an online presence if you don’t

already have one. The younger generation

are not mall rats like past ones and while

they will shop at brick-and-mortar stores

they will also do a great deal of their

buying online. And that is not only young

people. Every age group is shopping online

and it is important that they do not pass

you over when buying.

THERE are good days ahead of us.

With money circulating more freely and

consumers having more disposable

income we should see our sales increase

along with our profits. It is all about

stocking up on the right merchandise that

our customers want that will make the

THIS month we celebrate

both Dads and Grads. This is

a double win for retailersas

there are gifts of all sorts that

will be needed. Gifts for dads

range from sporting goods,

grilling supplies, lazy boys,

auto accessories and the like.

GRADS come in all sizes

and ages from pre-schoolers who may

want the latest Princess playhouse to

high school and college grads who may be

eyeing that new Lexus or Mercedes.

IT’S important that your store has the

right mix of inventory to satisfy shoppers

looking for gifts. While you may not have

room for a Lexus or Mercedes in your

space, you need to make sure you have

proper gift selections for all ages.

MAKE sure that your displays and

windows have signage inviting shoppers

to come in and look around. The key is

getting them through the door.

BE creative with your inventory.

Repurpose items to make special gifts by

filling mugs or glasses with items, adding

a bow and writing Happy Father’s Day!

Navigating The Trade Wars

FOR the most part the Trump administration has averted a trade war with Europe exempting it

from hefty steel and aluminum tariffs but there is a great deal of uncertainty still in the marketplace

for small businesses that use those materials.

YOU wouldn’t think of some businesses that will be effected but trade wars and tariffs will effect

many businesses aside from airline companies. Small businesses who sell fencing, steel barbed wire

and the like will see increases that they will have to pass along to their customers. Another victim

could be chocolate makers and companies who need steel tanles, rolling racks and molds that will see

prices raise. These are industries that are not talked about. We think that only the mega companies

will be effected, but that is far from the truth.

MANY small businesses are simply unprepared for the possible disruption that could stem from

a trade war with China. As of press time the Chinese government has done some retaliation on the

policies and it has effected some industries as well as given uncertainty to the stock market.

JUST because your business does not import raw materials or machinery from China does not

mean that your suppliers don’t. This is the trickle down. They will pay more and the end result is that

you and your business will pay more. That is just the way things work. No one is going to absorb higher

prices - they are going to be passed along to you and eventually your customers.

LOOK for alternatives. Try to find other sources for items and materials that you may need for your

business. Countries like Vietnam and India are growing rapidly as world players and producers. Many

suppliers who may be affected by the tariffs will partner with their competitors and peers to create

buying groups to negotiate better pricing and develop new resources.

SO stay on top of things and seek out alternatives in order to have the competitive edge that your

business needs.

Millennials Not Influenced By Retail Ads

IT is getting tougher every day for retailers to bring millennials into their stores. While over the

course of retail history every generation has shopped differently, there is no time more confusing to

marketers than the current.

GENERATION X and baby boomers are more closely aligned with each other when it comes to

shopping. They will go to retail stores, they will use the internet and have specific expectations of their

experiences.

HOWEVER when it comes to millennials they appear to be less focused on or impressed by basic

retailing than Gen Xers or Boomers who emphasized checkout wait times, inventory availability and

simple returns as their top priorities. Compared to these two groups Gen Xers do not put reasonable

checkout time at the top of their retail must-haves. Only a third indicated that this was important to

them. They’re also not overly motivated by a reasonable return and exchange policy (again about a

third) compared to over half the boomers and Gen Xers.

MILLENNIALS are more likely than other groups to use multiple channels, including social media

to communicate with brands. They embrace virtual assistants as shopping tools and communication

by a wide margin over others. And while boomers and Gen Xers were more inclined to respond to

advertising or targeted promotions this is not especially true of millennials. They are more tolerant of

email marketing and less likely to unsubscribe than other groups. Selling to this group is not a one-size

fits all. We’ve got to be more adaptive when we are marketing to this crowd.

When co-author Henry DeVries began to work

for a public relations agency, he wondered why

Established in 1874, IOF is a membership organization

that helps families. Only about five

percent of the population has heard about it because

the organization has never advertised or

promoted itself. The group hosts social activities,

participates in community projects, and

helps members in time of need.

For a family, joining

the IOF is a good

About three years after he joined a big public

relations agency, Henry wanted to start a firm

of his own. He worried about how he would

get new business. Henry knew that there was

So doing good work was important, but

equally important was being recognized as a

leader in the profession. Henry then looked at

other firms and other professions. What was

different about this type of marketing over

product marketing? Traditional marketing

looks at the four P’s: promotion, place, price,

and product. One part of the company makes

the product and the other part of the business

sells the product. But what is the product of

service marketing?

It is people, namely

the principals of the

firm. A service firm

is of the product, by

the product, and for

the product.

A quote from author and cartoonist James

Thurber illustrates this point. A woman once

approached Thurber at a party and asked how

things were. “Things, madam, will take care of

themselves. It’s people who concern me.” And

it is the people who do the work that concern

the prospects. It is the coauthors’ opinion that,

even if you have twenty people working for

you, you have to sell yourself and not the firm.

You must Market Yourself As The Expert.

This is not a theoretical article. If anything, we

sacrifice explaining why self-marketing works

in favor of giving you more examples of how it

Laplace often wrote in Celestial Mechanics, his

five-volume book on how the universe functioned,

a mathematical equation followed by

the line, “From this it is easy to see,” and then

moved on to the next equation. But it was not

all that easy for the readers to see.

Target Marketing

When You’re Low on Ammunition

Target marketing, where self-marketing really

begins, means research. And research means

doing your homework. You need to determine

your Who, What and How: exactly Who your

clients are going to be, What you will offer that

will interest them, and How you will reach

them.

Harvey Mackay, in Swim with the Sharks without

Being Eaten Alive, says the Japanese have a simple

way of describing the typical American

marketing plan. “Ready? Fire! Aim!” We just go

out and do it, then we try to figure out what

went wrong. First we develop the product or

service, then we try to figure out who needs it.

Or maybe we try to create a need for it.

Most target marketing books and articles will

tell you to research what the clients want, then

tailor your service to meet those needs. For selfmarketing,

we say you must go even farther.

You need to make yourself an expert on the

subject; this research opens the door for all of

the self-marketing avenues.

Here is a case in point. Sales

trainer Tony Alessandra says

that “most people aim at nothing

and hit it with amazing accuracy.”

When he was a

university professor, he decided

to go into the sales training business.

Although he had been very successful

selling products door to door, Alessandra had

never taken a course in sales. But he did know

From reading and talking to salespeople,

Alessandra determined that there was a need

for an “honest approach to selling.” This was

the basis for his courses and subsequent book,

Non-Manipulative Selling. He did not limit his

research to what others had written about sales

training. He went far a field to other disciplines

like psychology. He found that most of the current

sales training information was based on

behavioral psychology of people like Pavlov

and B.F. Skinner, which uses psychology

against the buyer. Alessandra advocated a

more humanistic approach based on the teachings

of such people as Carl Rogers, which suggests

working with the buyer.

Today Alessandra is not only an expert sales

trainer, commanding fees of several thousand

dollars for a one-hour talk, he also is an expert

on how to develop a celebrity profile. He has

spoken at various meetings of the National

Speakers Association on the topic of how to use

writing, speaking, and serving as a media expert

to promote yourself.

That says it all for target marketing research.

Find out who your clients should be, and find

out how they want it. This is called nichemanship.

Look at things like: age, sex, race, occupation,

education, income, activities, interests,

beliefs, & frequency of use of your service.

Then watch for

trends that concern

your niche of the

market by being an

avid consumer of information.

Segment

one particular specialty

and call it your

own. Promote yourself

as the specialist,

the expert, the authority.

Today’s consumers

demand more and more choices. Look

back 75 years ago and this just wasn’t so. Henry

Ford was a pioneer automaker. His assembly

line production set the market standard for efficiency.

But he did nothing for market research.

“You can have a Model T in any color

you want,” he used to say. “As long as it’s

black.”

The term market research scares a lot of professionals.

One objection is that they can’t afford it.

A second objection is that even if it is affordable,

you can never really know what people

want.

Let’s dismiss the second objection first. Some

question the reliability of surveys. How can we

base decisions on what a few hundred randomly

selected people say?

fact we heard it said that the experience is more

like trying to get a sip of water from an open

fire hydrant. The hard part is making sense of

it. You must do the tough job of analyzing the

information and putting it in terms people can

easily understand.

Positioning in the Prospect’s Mind

If you haven’t already, read Positioning: The Battle

for Your Mind and Marketing Warfare by Al

Reis and Jack Trout. For a good summation of

positioning, we refer you to the classic text:

Contemporary Advertising by Courtland Bovee

and William Arens. Positioning has become a

buzzword in marketing and advertising circles.

The authors demonstrate the concept by asking

a few simple questions. Who was the first person

to fly solo across the Atlantic? Charles

Lindbergh, of course. But who was the second?

Not so easy. Who was the first person to walk

on the moon? Neil Armstrong made that one

small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

But who was the second man to walk on the

moon? The first person to occupy a position in

the prospect’s mind is going to be hard to dislodge.

Reis and Trout compare the mind to a memory

bank, with slots and positions for every bit of

information to retain. But unlike a computer,

which has to retain information fed to it, the

mind does not. As a defense mechanism, the

mind screens and rejects the flood of information.

The mind keeps what agrees with its prior

experiences and filters out the rest.

To store the information, the mind ranks products

and brands. Visualize a series of ladders.

Say computers, and people think of IBM on the

top rung. For electronics, it’s Sony; for automobiles,

it’s Mercedes.

For self-marketing, it is critical that you earn

enough recognition to make it onto the ladder

for your category. The mind does not have

room for things new and different, so you must

relate them to the old. This is where nichemanship

comes in. As an architect, you will be put

on the architectural ladder. Frank Lloyd Wright

is probably on the top rung. But you can be

known as the architect who specializes in designing

1990s versions of Victorian homes.

Let’s take law as an example. For years the top

rung probably belonged to Melvin Belli, the attorney

known as the “King of Torts.” In her

book Expose Yourself, former journalist turned

public relations consultant Melba Beals describes

how she

helped create this positioning.

But there is

lots of room on the

ladder. Describing

yourself as the

Melvin Belli of sexual

harassment cases

is not a bad strategy.

A good example of this is Dr. Joyce Rebhun, a

former IRS tax attorney who calls herself a tax

therapist. “I knew from studying marketing in

college you have to differentiate yourself,” says

Rebhun. “There is already a glut on the market

of tax attorneys.”

Rebhun decided her target market would be

those who have emergency tax problems with

the IRS. Because she only handles crisis cases,

she has been featured in numerous newspapers

and magazines articles, as well as on TV

news shows. She runs ads in newspapers with

her photo and headlines that read “You Don’t

Need to Lose Your Job – Family – Sanity Because

of the IRS.” Her phone number is

1–800–000–0000. She may be on the crowded

lawyer ladder, but she definitely has clearly defined

her own rung. Even in

her promotion, she never

forgets positioning. She is

starting a syndicated newspaper

column called “Ask

Dr. Joyce,” which she describes

as the “Dear Abby of

the tax world.”

Positioning Strategies to Consider

Each positioning strategy must be special. This

will be the mental hook your prospective

clients and the media use to attach you to the

You also can position by single or combined demographic

group. You can be the women’s expert,

the senior citizen expert, the Asian expert,

or even the Asian women’s senior citizen expert.

Geographic considerations like the Gulf

Coast expert or Seattle expert, or industry considerations

like the hotel expert or auto-wrecking

yard expert should also be considered in

your positioning.

An important final point – a positioning statement

has to be brief. “Light, tight, and bright”

is how one magazine editor describes it. Your

positioning statement will not

define the total you. We are all

complex creatures, and volumes

stuff (not just swap business cards), plus an opportunity

to get to know all of the members.

Use your status as a group member to seek advice

from key players inside and outside the organization.

Here are some recommendations to

accomplish all that and more.

Principle One:

Aspire Higher When Joining Up

Try to join groups in which you are one of the

few representatives from your profession or

corporate rank, rather than organizations comprised

solely of professional colleagues.

It was Groucho Marx who sent the telegram,

“Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to

belong to any club that would accept me as a

member.” We don’t recommend being that

snobbish, but it pays to aim above your station

in selecting groups to join. If you know almost

your profession, don’t always sit on committees

made up of others in your field. As a financial

expert, you won’t meet many you can

market your services to if you volunteer for the

finance committee – comprised of all the other

financial bigwigs in town. Instead, why not join

planning or program development and meet

others who may some day want to hire you?

Principle Two:

Let Someone Convince You to Join

Personal contacts made through these groups

prove to be invaluable assets to both your career

and your company or cause. So before you

sign up, put on your Sherlock Holmes hat and

do some sleuthing.

Set up an informational interview

with the head of

It is more important to attend a club’s social

hour than the meeting itself. When pressed for

time, you’ll make more contacts and perhaps

even learn more if you arrive promptly for the

social period and cut out before the speaker.

What is the best way to work a room?

Make a sport of it. The following

6-point plan of attack works best:

1. Think gamesmanship.

Make a “beat-the-Clock”

game out of mingling and

see how many potential

alliances you can make at

each club meeting.

2. Surpass personal best. Prepare for the game

of meeting potential alliances like a runner

psychs up for a race. Aim for your personal best

each outing, always increasing the number of

“contacts per allotted minutes” from your last

performance.

3. Double-team them. Don’t congregate with

people you know. To make meeting new people

easier, consider working a room with an ally.

You can introduce each other to potential linkages.

4. Use zone coverage. If several people from

the same company attend an event, spread out

at various tables. This forces you to meet more

people. Often a company will “buy a table” of

8 or 10 seats. It is fine to symbolically buy the

table, but ask to distribute the people to different

tables.

forming a linkage with the key staff person.

Large, established groups often pay someone

can be a valuable ally, because he or she can

suggest which committees would be beneficial

and which to avoid. A staff person also can get

you quick information you desire about club

members and programs. Plus, if your name is

on the staff person’s mind, you may be recommended

when others are seeking information

in your area of specialization.
