Passages of Distinction opens West Coast Office

Introducing Evelyne Gaudin

By Sari Freeman

We recently announced a new addition to our Passages

of Distinction team, Ms. Evelyne Gaudin, Western

Region Sales Manager! We have always felt that the

West Coast is very important and now we have found

the right person to spread the good word for us on an

ongoing basis. Evelyne has a rich background in the

travel industry starting out as a travel agent, then moving

to Air France, to Tahiti Legends and then to starting

her own representation company, Evelyne’s Collection.

We have only worked together for a month but

we feel she is very enthusiastic and she has already

visited some of our hotels.

We are very pleased to have her on our team!

Evelyne, while responsible for the Western region, is primarily focusing for the

moment on the California market. Some time ago, Brad and I determined that

it was time to find someone based in the area. After a long search, we are very

confident that we have found just the right fit!

Evelyne is promoting Passages of Distinction overall however, the following hotels

and destination experts have particularly requested this extra coverage:

Agent’s Corner

Evelyn Gaudin

Sales Manager,

Western Region

“Our 3 week journey in the Far East ended in Singapore

with a stay at The Fullerton Hotel which exceeded our

every expectation. The stunning converted post office

building combines Singapore’s rich heritage with a

distinctive contemporary flair. Situated directly on the

river it makes the perfect location for walking around the Esplanade, the Boat Quay,

museums and Merilon Park. We enjoyed excellent service during our stay and had

a wonderful dining experience at the Lighthouse Restaurant. Our well appointed

room overlooked the pool and river. Our stay in Singapore was a delightful change

to the other 5-star international “chain-hotels” we are so familiar with.”

- Clients of Anne-Grethe Parkin, Travel Exchange - Westport, CT

“This is an exquisite old world hotel. The appointments

are so excellent, and the beds are perfect. Maybe we

will never leave!”

- Clients of Helga Frehe

Altour International - Los Angeles, CA

“I have to say I was blown away which is saying a lot. I

have been in many countries and have stayed in many

5-star hotels but the Alvear Palace is by far the best hotel

I have ever stayed in. It has an old world charm of

elegance and beauty but everything looks brand new.

The staff is just amazing, calling you by name at all times

and always with a smile. The butler was always available

and always followed up to make sure we were taken care of. My room was amazing

with such attention paid to every detail.”

“Can we live in this hotel until we die?”

- Clients of Michael Holtz, Smartflyer - New York, NY

“Their experience was absolutely wonderful! I am

very appreciative of the upgrade to a Junior Suite

that you extended to them. They were thrilled with

the flowers, fruit basket, and champagne that you

sent to their room. Thank you!”

- Clients of Margaret Cagliuso, Posh Travel - Greenland, NH

“We loved the Hotel Powers!!! The staff, rooms, breakfast were all so very good….in

fact much better than good! During our first stay in room 45, I could find absolutely

no fault with it. It was delightful. We were in room 58. The door to the balcony was

open, the church in the background was lit up and we could see the Eiffel Tower

sparkling. Stunning! What a grand welcome. The Powers is a delightful Boutique

Hotel and I will happily recommend it.”

- Zelda Goldberg, Travel Place Bethesda - Bethesda, MD

“I can sincerely say that the hotel is a wonderful find - fabulous staff, a great location

and thank you so much for the most amazing rooms! Your front office people

were excellent and very knowledgeable and my children took a special shine to the

gentlemen in the breakfast room who was wonderful to them and even made us an

early breakfast on the morning we left! We look forward to being able to stay with

you again in the future.”

MOHAN’S INDIA SEMINAR AND VISUAL EXPERIENCE

Travel Scope Guides You Through A Paradoxical World

By Sari Freeman

A trip to India can seem daunting! Where to begin, where to go and who to

go to for help? Having a friend to take you by the hand is key! Mohan and

his team are the friends you need to plan a trip of a lifetime!

India is a true paradox! A world of extremes: the very rich, the very poor,

the latest in hi-tech amenities, yet many live without basics. Then, there are

so many different regions, sites, religions, dialects, and ancient history.

Our goal, at Passages of Distinction, is to educate you, the consultants so

that you feel well informed and therefore confident in selling our product.

This is why Brad and I felt it would be ideal to organize this seminar, when

Mohan, the owner of Travel Scope, was coming to town, to help develop

some excitement for

selling Incredible India.

Those who attended our

India 101 seminar, were

privy to the inside scoop

on how to plan a first

trip and more. Pranna, a

cool Asian fusion restaurant,

was the venue. The

first hour, we held class

then retreated to cocktails

with wonderful In-

dian hors d’oeuvres and

Jay Dorfman’s fabulous

exhibit of Indian portrait

photos!

India is Truly Fascinating

The seminar opened with a wow! Mohan played a fabulous video that had

recently been shot by Jay (a client, now friend) and narrated by Mohan’s

wife Shoba. It was a real celebration of India in all its colorful glory! Filmed

in Varanasi where you saw all different types of people, ceremonies, amazing

shots of children, older people, street people, holy people. This set the

stage and drew you into wanting to know more. India is truly fascinating!

Introducing The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore

The Fullerton Bay Hotel Singapore is prominently positioned in the heart

of Singapore’s Central Business District within The Fullerton Heritage precinct.

The hotel features a total of 100 rooms including five differently

themed suites and

a Presidential Suite.

Each room has an exclusive

balcony which

provides panoramic

views of the Singapore

skyline. In addition the

hotel has three fine din-

ing restaurants, Clifford,

The Landing Point, and

Lantern. Clifford is a

modern brasserie that

is perfect for anything from business lunches, afternoon teas to romantic

dinners. Clifford redefines dining by the bay. The Landing Point features a

42 foot long bar and a vast outdoor terrace that overlooks the bay. Lantern

Then Mohan got down to the details

with the aid of maps, demographics,

statistics and highlights of

the different regions. Everyone left

feeling confident that they were

far more well-informed than when

they entered the room! At the end

of the AV presentation, we asked

if there were questions. What happened

at that point was incredible,

out of 30 people attending, two

Gazing at Taj Mahal

individuals who had been on a

FAM trip

with me

last year, commented on the outstanding job that

Mohan does. Then one after another, five individuals

stood up and commented with glowing reports!!

Here are just two:

“I have traveled in India with many different ground

operators but I must admit that Travel Scope was

the best! The staff have such respect for Mohan and

this is a true sign of success”

From an owner of a prominent

Virtuoso agency

“The pre-eminent tour experts for all manner of travel

in and around India… they know this country inside

and out and can take you to edge and back or relax quietly on the periphery.

I produced this short travelogue to provide an overview but there’s no way

to wrap your wit around this awesome country unless you make the journey.

And don’t make the journey without at least consulting these folks. They have

never failed me.”

Jay Dorfman, photographer and videographer

It was a special moment. Everyone was excited to travel to India and send

travelers with or without Travel Scope. But why would you do it any other

way!!

Linda’s Trip To Singapore

A Visit to The Fullerton Hotel SIngapore

By Linda Lomelino

Singapore is hot! hot! hot! and I’m not just speaking about the weather! A new

casino, a new conference center, a new cruise facility, Universal Studios, and the

world’s largest observation wheel make Singapore a destination that will please

all visitors. Singapore is a beautiful vibrant

city featuring beautiful tropical

gardens, great shopping, wonderful

ethnic neighborhoods, outstanding

cuisine of every type and taste, and a

blend of modern and colonial architecture

which includes our The Fullerton

Hotel Singapore.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit

the historic The Fullerton Hotel Sin-

Guest Writer Column

St James: A london Village

London is really a series of small villages, each with

its own personality and attractions and all are best

seen on foot. So when we at the St. James’s Hotel

and Club are asked by guests for the best way to see

the capital we give one simple piece of advice – go

walking.

Take our area of St. James’s as an example: we are

situated in a quiet cul-de-sac off St. James’s Street,

an area named after our near neighbour St. James’s

Palace. This 16th century palace was a residence of

the Kings and Queens of England for over 300 years

and remains the official residence of the Sovereign

although since 1837 they have actually lived in Buckingham

Palace, also nearby. Interestingly though all

Henrick Muehle

Managing Director of the

St. Jame’s Hotel & Club

ambassadors from United States are accredited to the Court of St. James’s.

A few steps from the palace bring to you Berry Bros & Rudd, Britain’s oldest wine

and spirit merchant, having traded from the same shop for over 300 years and

still family run. A plaque in a nearby courtyard marks the site of the Texas Legation

maintained there from 1836 to 1845

James Lock & Co, hatters, comes next; founded in 1676 Lock and Co holds two

royal warrants and still makes gentlemen’s headgear and ladies’ millinery with a

style that is envied worldwide.

From top to toe, so the next stop on St. James’s Street must be John Lobb, purveyor

of handmade shoes. John Lobb continues the royal connection and also

boasts celebrities from the silver screen, the world of politics and the arts as customers.

In the middle of St. James’s Street is D. R. Harris & Co, London’s oldest pharmacy,

whose range of skincare products has just been selected by British Airways for

the latest first class bag and opposite is William Evans, gun and rifle maker and a

relative newcomer having opened in 1883.

On the corner of London’s famous Jermyn Street is Fox of St. James’s, purveyors

of fine specialist cigars to European Royal, and other distinguished customers,

(including Winston Churchill) for over 200 years.

Nearing the end of St. James’s street is Piccadilly, home to the Royal Academy and

Fortnum and Mason, London’s famous grocery store, having supplied high quality

provisions since 1707.

All bespoke and unique establishments and all easily accessible from the hotel

by foot. Of course the shops around St. James’s are not all about history: nearby

Bond Street has all the designer names any shopaholic could wish for from Prada

to Gucci and Ralph Lauren to Burberry and as for the nearby art galleries........

So if you intend to visit London take our advice and bring walking shoes – handmade

of course!

gapore which is regularly voted one

of Asia’s top hotels. Superb views in

every direction include the Singapore River, the historic district, the city skyline

and the harbor. Built in 1928 as the General Post Office, its location, in the heart

of the central business district, occupied a vital role in the colonial government.

The classical Doric columns from the colonial period were retained when the

building was converted to The Fullerton Hotel Singapore in 2001. The conversion

was beautifully done with elegant public spaces and cleverly arranted guest

rooms, making it a perfect setting for business and leisure travelers.

The Fullerton has 10 different room and suite categories, state of the art gym and

spa and an infinity pool that overlooks the Singapore River.

Now let’s talk food! There are five restaurants and I made sure to sample each

one!

The Town House Restaurant, overlooking the Singapore River, offers a power

breakfast, international buffet lunch, Asian buffet lunch and dinner, seafood gourmet

buffet dinner and a riverside barbecue. The Jade offers modern Chinese

food in an elegant setting with culinary specialties (I had to have Shark Fin Soup

which was outstanding!) The Courtyard is located in the sunlit atrium lobby

where guests can have a quick sandwich, a Japanese and Indian buffet and an

afternoon tea. Off the lobby is The Post Bar where one can relax in a distinctively

contemporary atmosphere and select a martini from the extensive martini menu.

And then there is The Lighthouse! At the top of the hotel The Lighthouse is on

the site where the original lighthouse used to guide ships in. This restaurant not

only offers delightful contemporary Italian cuisine but also a panoramic view of

Marina Bay – and at sunset a breathtaking view not to be missed.

The most lasting memory of my stay at The Fullerton is the various cultures that

make up the staff and Singapore in general. The Chinese, Indian, Malay and Filipino

cultures offer unsurpassed service and it all comes together to make The

Fullerton the hotel to stay at when visiting Singapore.

Sari and I have had the very distinct pleasure to work with Mr. Tom Hayden, Senior

Vice President – Global Luxury Sales of The Affluent Traveler over the past months.

During this time, Tom has been able to show us that this relatively new consortium of

international agencies is becoming a force to be reckoned with, not only in the US,

but worldwide. Owned by parent company AMG (TravelSavers and Nest) Affluent

Traveler took the best of the best revenue producing agencies in the luxury segment

and aligned them under the brand to enter the market of attracting high-end international

travelers. The keys to their success are that they limit their affiliate members in

each location, and match with top suppliers in each destination with a formula that

equates to exclusivity and extraordinary relationships. We are delighted that 10 of our

Passages of Distinction Collection members have signed up to reap the benefits of

this affiliation!

In early June, Affluent Traveler held its annual conference in Boca Raton, Florida, and

specialists”, Sari and I had the opportunity to address a very well traveled audience

of over 130 agency owners from around the world. Our message was how to sell

“non-chain” hotels and why this will keep your client reliant on your expertise. In addition

we had the chance to introduce the agents to the 10 properties which are now

brand new to their program. Later that afternoon we were able to meet with each of

the agents individually to further promote the hotels they will now be partners with in

Affluent Traveler! We were not only impressed with the level of knowledge, but with

the professionalism and the open minded thirst for knowledge these travel advisors

had for our hotels and destinations. Also, we were amazed at how many of them

were already booking many of our properties!

In short, we are thrilled to be working with Tom, his team at Affluent Traveler, and

a whole new group of impressive travel professionals! From the opening reception

to the jazz concert and dine-around dinner in Palm Beach, to the incredible caliber

and lineup of speakers at the general session, we left this conference refreshed and

enthusiastic about the future of the travel industry!

Evelyne’s Experience of our Paris and Provence Hotels

By Evelyne Gaudin

I am beyond thrilled to be part of the Passages of Distinction team and to not

only promote France, but also the UK, Italy, Argentina, Singapore, and India.

During my recent visit to France in May, I had the opportunity to visit the Bastide

de Marie in Provence, as well as the three Paris hotels, the Hotel Powers,

Plaza Tour Eiffel and

the Hotel le Sénat.

Provence

After a very pleasant TGV

train trip to Avignon and a

short drive to the Lubéron

area, I arrived in the heart

of this magical and cultural

region where the Bastide

de Marie is located. With

only 14 rooms, including Evelyne Gaudin Visits the Chefs at Bastide De Marie

6 suites, Bastide de Marie

will give you the feeling

of being in your own home in Provence.

This working vineyard is located at the foot of the village of Ménerbes, one of

the “perched” villages of Provence. All of your senses will come alive upon

entering this property. The attention to detail is incredible and yet nature seems

to be untouched. The ideal location allows your clients to be able to explore

Avignon and its Papal Palace, L’Isle sur Sorgues and its antiques market, Roussillon

and its walking trails, and to relive “A Year in Provence” by Peter Mayle.

5 pm - Back to Villa Belrose in the late afternoon

to swim and soak in the swimming pool

8 pm - A drink and live music on Quai Joseph’s

black sand beach

9 pm - Dinner at Villa Romana whilst enjoying the

fashion show and, especially, the “people show”

After the magical sojourn in Provence, it was back to Paris on the high speed

train. I was anxious to see the Hotel Powers and Hotel le Sénat and was not

disappointed. Hotel Powers is a 4-star, 50 room property located in the 8th

arrondissement on the Right Bank. This little gem is a former private townhouse

with beautifully preserved marble fireplaces and molded ceilings typical of

the 19th century French style and character. It is perfectly located within walking

distance of the Champs-Elysées and the Avenue Montaigne. The rooms

and suites are spacious, comfortable, and fully equipped with free wireless

internet access, flat screen TVs, safes, Bulgari amenities, and individual air

conditioning. Certain rooms have bow windows and private balconies; some

even have a view of the Eiffel Tower. Next, I went in the direction of the Eiffel

Tower and crossed the Seine to visit a quiet and elegant area in the 16th arrondissement

and the Hotel Plaza Tour Eiffel. Located in the Trocadéro Plaza

area, within walking distance of the Palais de Chaillot, Eiffel Tower, and the

Grand Palais, this small hotel of 41 rooms and suites is perfect for both your

business and leisure travelers. Your clients will enjoy all of the modern conveniences

and contemporary décor, as well as a workout room.

Last, I crossed back over the Seine and went to the Left Bank to see the Hotel

le Sénat. For those looking for a more bohemian atmosphere, Hotel le Sénat

would be a great choice. Located in the 6th arrondissement, across from one

of my favorite Parisian gardens, the Luxembourg Gardens, Hotel le Sénat will

surprise you by the size of its rooms and the wonderful duplexes with views

of the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Sacre Coeur, and more.

This hotel has it all: bar/lounge, room service, free Wi-Fi, self-controlled air

conditioning, room service, Hermes amenities, to name just a few.

And with their amazing summer offer “Pay for 4 nights and stay for 5”, how

could your clients resist.

12 am - Enjoy a drink or two at Caves du Roy

while listening to DJ Jack-E

DAY2

Herbes and the fish market.

11 am - A stroll along the harbour to savour Saint-

Tropez in the morning ahead of the crowds

4 pm - Visit to the Chartreuse de la Verne and

lunch at Collobrières: a Provencal stew with fresh

pasta and a local rosé wine

8 pm - In town to make the most of the best of

international brands and local boutiques

9 pm - Enjoy an Americano or Mojito on the terrace

of the Sube Hotel and watch the last rays of sun

11:30 pm - Candle-lit dinner at Villa Belrose overlooking

the sea illuminated by the moon, the yachts

anchored in the bay after a day at sea

1 am - Feverish dancing at Jean Roch’s VIP Room.

At 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning, buy some pains

au chocolat just out of Sénéquier’s ovens, return

to the Villa Belrose to bathe in the swimming pool

(without making a sound) and, at last, to bed between

cool sheets for a well deserved rest.
