Disrupt aging
BY NICK READ
HEALTH & FITNESS
MANAGER
You’re only as old as you
feel! It’s NEVER too late
to start!
Before moving on, I want
you to ask yourself this question.
How old is old?
40? 50 years of age?
By now you’re either sitting
there with a grimace of annoyance,
or laughing hysterically
at the idea that anyone could
consider that age bracket to be
old. It’s ludicrous, right?
Not when you’re speaking
to Millennials.
As a social experiment, I
asked this list of questions to a
number of people in their 20’s.
I) How old is old?
2) How would an old person
cross the street?
3) How would an old person
send a text message?
4) How might an old person do
a push up?
The responses were hilarious!
I couldn’t believe my eyes.
The respondents tended to
say 40 and 50 years of age.
I witnessed a few different
impressions of walking with
zimmer-frames, walking sticks,
some wheezing between pushups
and everything done in deliberate
slow motion.
I was embarrassed for my
fellow generation. Their version
of ‘old’ is clearly outdated
and extremely disconnected
from the reality I see every
day. They certainly can’t have
spent any time with our LifeFit
members!
Every Friday morning when
I walk into our LifeFit programme,
I’m quickly reminded
that age truly is a number. Recently
I was shown up by a 70
year old woman, who decided
to outperform me on the balance
board. This was followed
by one of her 80 year old companions,
who rubbed it in my
face by doing a single leg hip
raise, on a Swiss Ball! What a
show off!!!
The theme of this?
You’re only as old as you feel.
And when I sat down with my
new found friends and told
them about my list of questions,
their response. “When
you stop moving, that’s when
you start getting old.”
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Grey Power
makes a stand
When you read this I will have presented to
the Waikato Regional Council and Hamilton
City Council on their 10 year Long Term plans
both personally and on behalf of Hamilton Grey
Power (I took a consensus of those at our
Monday morning meetings).
BY ROGER HENNEBRY
HAMILTON GREY POWER
PRESIDENT
Waikato Regional
Council proposes an
average 4.2 percent
rates increase but targeted
rates will also add extra costs
for passenger transport (buses
and proposed train).
The rate rise is worked out
as an average but will double
or treble for some of you and
be less for others, in fact the
proposed first three years increases
will be the highest rates
increases for some years.
I asked the Regional councillors
to consider ‘affording’
that type of an increase on a
superannuitant’s income and
Midday @ Hamilton Gardens Cafe
Cost $22.50 less Grey Power
contribution of $5.50 = $17 a person.
Money to be paid to Grey Power by
Thursday 21 June please
Roger Hennebry
to reconsider sticking to core
business and not indulging in
nice to haves at this time.
I will also have presented
to the Hamilton City Council
mayor and councillors on pretty
much the same lines, except
their outrageous rate increases
make the Regional Council’s almost
acceptable!
Both councils have to STICK
to core business; indulging in
economic develop is a gamble
with ratepayers’ money and is
not acceptable, new theatre,
new swimming pool, new community
facilities, new transport
initiatives including an interim
train service from Hamilton
to Auckland make the proposed
increases unaffordable
for many and we are talking
hundreds of millions of dollars
expenditure over the next 10
years (in fact almost one billion
dollars) on their Santa Clause
wish list.
I’m predicting this 10 year
plan will come back to haunt
the Mayor and councillors if
they don’t listen to the community.
If the feeling is strong
enough and there is a protest I
feel Grey Power should join in.
My question to Grey Power
members is what should our
response be? Do you see Hamilton
needing so much growth
at our expense? Shouldn’t
growth be self funding? What
happened to user pays? While
an admirable goal to provide
affordable land and build affordable
houses ratepayers are
being asked to subside that
goal.
I know as a group we will
have differing views on what
constitutes core business but
at the end of the day rates
should be affordable. I suggest
council was set up to look
after infrastructure in the city
and in the case of the Waikato
Regional Council air, soil and
water.
In 4 years HCC has increased
its staff by nearly 400 and WRC
from 250 to 500 in the last 10
years.
There seems to be a trend
here of empire building. I
strongly suggest you let the
mayor and councillors know
your views. Ignore superannuitants
at their peril - there
will be one million of us before
2025.
Wages and salaries have
increased by 19 percent in the
last 10 years and rates have
gone up 62 percent. It’s out of
sync?
On a brighter note I hope
you will join us to “drown our
sorrows” as we are having a
mid-year Christmas lunch subsidised
by the City Council...
wooops I mean Grey Power.
Hope to see you there. Book
Reflections of a family doctor in Hamilton
Print sudoku
It has been my privilege to be a health
http://1sudoku.com
professional and complete 50 years as a family
general practitioner and sports doctor.
BY DR MIKE BOWEN
7 9
I
arrived in Hamilton in 1974
with my wife and two small
children and later we had a
third a real Kiwi.
Working at Glenview Medical
Centre was exciting, and
stimulating after working in
the National Health Service
for seven years. It was never
our intention to settle in New
Zealand but I was quickly won
over by the friendly work colleagues,
staff and patients.
It was a joy to leave the inefficiency
of the UK and provide
a more effective and appropriate
level of care to those who
needed it.
8 4
Sadly increasing bureaucracy’
has had a dampening effect
on current care with time
spent filling in forms and less
SUDOKU PUZZLE
time with patients who are the
priority.
I had 6 specialised 5 in obstetrics
and gynecology so it was
a pleasure to be able to deliver
expectant mothers and that
was such a fulfilling part of my
work.
I delivered more than 1500
babies and they are all special.
One delivery stands out of a
lovely Maori lady having her
15th child. She had 13 of her
children with her in the labour
room (all very well behaved!)
and as the babe was born they
sang a ‘waiata’ to welcome the
new sibling into the world. It
still makes me ‘tingle’ as it was
one of my magic moments.
I always had an interest in
sport so early on I explored
is that you can only use each number once in each row, each
Sports Medicine, which was in
its infancy in New Zealand. I
was lucky to be invited to care
for numerous teams including
Waikato Rugby, the All Blacks
and New Zealand Rowing,
which was wonderful.
My sporting highlight was
accompanying the All Blacks
Team to South Africa in 1995
for the World Cup. The high
point was the impact of Jonah
Lomu against England in the
semifinal.
The low point was having to
support 27 players and management
out of a group of 35
who ‘mysteriously’ all became
acutely ill after a team lunch 48
hours before the final – one of
the most difficult medical situations
I have ever had to deal
with.
We were never able to determine
the cause but there
was a strong suspicion it was
not a chance event – we may
never know.
Later in the year after the
World Cup there was a tour of
Italy and France with only modest
results. Before the last test
in Paris we played Divisional
French fifteen in Nancy. The
night before the game team
management suggested I
should have a night off -a relative
rarity.
In my absence one of the
players had asked a New Zealand
journalist for a tablet to
help him sleep. He slept well
but awoke early morning and
took another tablet as the
match was in the evening He
did not come to breakfast but
showed up for lunch and then
his pre-match massage.
After this he then returned
40 minutes latter for another
massage having no memory
of the previous one! When
he walked into a mirror in the
changing rooms before the
match alarm bells rang and I
voiced my concerns and suggested
we might need a substitute
if his form was badly
affected.
In the first 5 minutes he
caught a high ball on his own
goal line then ran past 15
French players to score a brilliant
try. He continued to play
a brilliant game and Laurie
Mains said “ Doc perhaps you
had better put them all on the
same tablets before the second
French test in Paris.
Of course this did not happen
as any sedative usually has
a negative effect on performance
so are not recommended
but this was a happy chance
outcome.
I have been blessed in
my medical career to meet
so many wonderful people,
travelled widely with sports
teams in different sports but
undoubtedly the most rewarding
part has been the involvement
with so many families in
my practice and even a few for
four generations.
Retirement will bring new
opportunities plus I can expect
some hurdles to overcome.
Maintaining good health is important
to us all and I am lucky
that I still cycle, swim and ski
whenever there is an opportunity.
Already after two months
retirement feels very busy.
Influenza vaccination
BY DAWN SMITH
The Flu vaccine “Flurix”
is indicated for prophalaxis
against influenza in
adults and children.
Vaccination is no silver bullet,
as effectiveness can vary,
but it does help to reduce the
severity and It’s the best way to
protect yourself.
Influenza is a significant Public
Health issue in NZ with infection
rates predicted at greater
than 25 percent - some of who
will need hospital admission,
with some deaths.
Symptoms can come on
quickly via rapid spread, including:
fevers, chills, aches, runny
nose, coughs and stomach
upsets.
Spread is via touch and
through the air.
Vaccination is especially
recommended for the
following:
• Over 60 years of age and
those who suffer from:
• Cardiovascular disease
• Metabolic diseases (diabetes)
• Chronic respiratory disease
• Chronic renal disease
• Immune deficiency, congenital
or acquired.
GREY POWER NOTICE
Remember to pay your Power Bill to:
PULSE ENERGY
in Association with Grey Power
(Not to Grey Power)
BUT, fit and healthy people
should have it for protection
of themselves if exposed to increased
risk of infection related
to their occupation.
ALSO prevention of disease
in the workplace can lead to
substantial economic benefit
to the employer.
The vaccine should be administered
before the beginning
of the influenza season,
or as required by the epidemiologic
situation.
Vaccination is required every
year, of the updated antigen
composition.
The strain this year is H3N2
and some data from America
and Canada suggest the effectiveness
of the vaccine has
not been good – HOWEVER
it is STRONGLY recommended,
even if to reduce severity,
and its effect on other virus
strains too.
IE: It is important that you
talk to your doctor, who knows
your medical history, to confirm
if you are a patient who is
suitable and should or should
not have the annual vaccine.
Introducing Jamie Strange
– Labour MP
An important
message for seniors:
BY JAMIE STRANGE MP
One of the first pieces of
law the new Government
passed this year
was a fix to the rates rebate
system, to ensure those living
in retirement villages obtain
the rates rebate they are entitled
to.
Previously, I know they were
missing out on the rebate because
of the way local councils
collected rates - but the issue
had been put in the ‘too hard’
basket.
For a number of years, Labour
MP Ruth Dyson has been
campaigning to make this fairer,
so people who live in retirement
villages are treated justly.
I’m proud we have now fixed
this issue.
Retirement village residents
with “Licence to Occupy”
agreements can now apply for
a rates rebate from the next
rating year, beginning July 1
this year.
Jamie Strange
(Retirement village residents
with a licence to occupy do not
own the property that they live
in, but they do have a contractual
right to occupy it).
Fixing this law means more
New Zealanders will get the
money they are entitled to. You
can receive up to $620 pa – depending
on your income, your
rates and any dependants you
look after.
Make sure you apply for the
rebate, to ensure you don’t
miss out. You can obtain the
form from your local council,
or apply on line through the
Department of Internal Affairs
website (www.dia.govt.nz)
The rates rebate scheme began
in the early 1970s, when
Jamie is responsible for the following electorates;
Hamilton East and West plus Taranaki King Country.
An educated man with a Masters degree in
Educational Leadership. He lives in Hamilton with his
wife and children and is showing a commitment and
interest in the elderly as well as the younger generation
of our city.
He is in contact with the Minister for Seniors, Tracey
Martin on a regular basis to keep us up to date with
Senior news.
Norman Kirk was Prime Minister.
I would like to acknowledge
his vision and passion
for ensuring our seniors are
respected and valued.
Our health is very important
and I know it can be difficult
to keep warm in winter
at times. That is why we have
introduced the Winter Energy
Payment as part of our Families
Package.
From July to September this
year (and May to September
in following years), all superannuants
will receive an extra
$20.46 a week if you are single
and $31.82 a week for a couple,
to help with energy costs.
You don’t need to do anything
to start receiving this it
will simply be added to your
superannuation payments.
Finally, the previous Government
had planned to raise the
superannuation age and had
stopped contributions to the
Super Fund. This worried many
New Zealanders.
Labour and our partners in
Government guarantee the super
age will remain at 65 and
we are planning for the future
so that is why we restarted
contributions to the Super
Fund as soon as we became
the Government.
Our focus is to put people
first and so ensure that every
New Zealander is treated fairly.
I’m proud to be a part of
a Government that is making
positive, practical changes
to ensure life is better for all
those living in our wonderful
country.
Octogenarian with
a life full of talent
This is the story of a man, who to date,
had a very full and satisfying life and here are
some of his many achievements.
BY LIZ BOWERS
Born March 1938 in Hastings
to parents Gordon
and Stella. Richard Small
also has one sister, now living
in Wellington.
They lived in Havelock
North, where his father owned
100 acres on the outskirts of
town, driving to the farm each
day where he grew rye grass
and clover for seed, and grew
peas for Wattie cCanneries ,
plus fattening hoggets in the
winter for the butcher trade.
As a young boy he learned
to feed out the stock with a
pitch fork from the back of a
trailer and then was allowed to
drive the tractor at age 12.
He attended Havelock North
primary school but his parents
felt that their son needed to
be toughened up and so sent
him to Scots College in Wellington
as a boarder where he
loved the life.
A school renowned for its
rugby but little did they know
that they had a budding cricketer
in their midst.
So where did this farm boy
end up?
Richard went on to play
cricket for Wellington University,
and captained teams in
Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Wairarapa
and also played for Cen-
Richard Small
tral Districts.
He was a left handed batsman
and recalls one of his finest
moments as making 155
runs against Marlborough, in a
Hawke Cup match, a team that
included the NZ fast bowler,
Gary Bartlett.
He also tells the story of
when playing for Central Districts
against Otago, he dropped
a catch from his idol Bert Sutcliffe
who had just scored 200
runs, and Richard remembers
the crowds cheering to see their
star batsman carry on, finally
being dismissed for 255.
At the tender age of 18
he went into CMT training as
with most other NZ boys for
three months and then it was
compulsory to join the Territorials
for three years for a
fortnight camp.
An opportunity arose to go
to Malaya for three months
with the NZ 1st Battalion for
jungle training. Fortunately he
did not experience any hostility
other than regularly meeting
up with leeches, scorpions
and snakes unheard of in
New Zealand.
On returning to NZ in 1961
he married Mary a nurse from
Hastings and they eventually
had three lovely daughters.
In the early part of their marriage
they had joined an animal
health company in Masterton.
However farming was in
his blood so they went back
to farming with his father on
a hill country block, but after
three years and finding that
stock and wool prices were
too low for two families they
sold the property and Richard
joined the Stock and Station
agency Murray Roberts, at
Waipukurau.
From 1968/72 he worked
with Murray Roberts as a
farm merchandise and grain
and seed agent.
In 1972 Wrightson took
over the company and Richard
was transferred to Gisborne to
handle the maize business.
After two further moves to
Wanganui and Masterton in
quick succession, Richard was
transferred to Nelson Branch
as manager.
This was a very diversified
branch covering not only the
traditional Stock and Station
business, but it was the agent
for all NZ hops, which were
only grown in Nelson.
It also ran a large builders
supply operation, a shipping
agency, an Atlantic fuel company
agency, a travel agency,
wine and spirits, home appliances,
and real estate.
In 1985 Richard was transferred
to Hamilton as manager
for the Waikato/Thames
valley area.
In 1986 Wrightsons merged
with Dalgetys and Richard was
appointed manager of the
combined company.
His first job was to reduce a
combined staff of 240 down
to 180 over the next 6months.
Not an easy task.
In 1988 Richard became
the regional manager covering
the company business through
the Central north Island and
the north.
Then in the last three years
before his retirement in 1998,
the company decided to run
the business from a divisional
management structure based
in Wellington, and Richard’s
role very conveniently reverted
back to manager Hamilton.
1998- Retired aged 60????
Don’t think so.
This was not a time for Richard
to sit back in a deck chair
and read books, drink wine
and expect Mary to run round
after him.
No he had another 20 years
of contribution to society
ahead of him.
For three years he worked
part time with a company called
Company Rebuilders working
with some 50 small businesses
over this period helping them
to manage their business and
improve their profit.
He joined the Board of
Hospice Waikato in 1998 and
helped transform this charitable
health business from a small
house in Manning Street, with
no inpatient units, four administration
staff and 12 nurses
working part time into a highly
successful site in Cobham Drive.
As chairman he was proactive
in raising $8 million
through fundraising to build
the Inpatient Unit, Rainbow
Place, day care centre, the
nurses’ base and admin block.
Hospice Waikato today has
approx 80 permanent staff
plus 600 volunteers and continues
it’s fantastic support for
people who are beyond other
forms of treatment and require
palliative care.
On top of all this Richard has
belonged to Hamilton Rotary
for 30 years and was president
for the 1995/96 year and was
awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship
for his amazing charitable
work in the community.
The Hamilton Rotary Charity
Golf Day in March each year,
in which he has been deeply involved,
is now in its 30th year.
He was chairman of the
Hamilton Golf Club between
1997 and 1999, and continues
to enjoy his golf, and trout fishing
in the Tauranga-Taupo river.
Congratulations to this
amazing man who has reached
80, whom I have had the honour
to talk to and share just a
small part of his interesting life.
Tricks and tips
for food buying
We all are capable of impulse buying and
so we see the specials at the front door of
the supermarkets, the smell of freshly
baked bread or chickens that have just been
cooked, but does this really save us money?
Often the cost at the
checkout ends up being
far greater than we
anticipated before we started
shopping.
This month I spent time with
an agent for a food company
and I was shown several ways
of helping with the food bill as
we explored the supermarkets.
So here is a list of ideas for you
to think about when you next
shop:
• Always take a shopping list
and try to stick to it.
• Look for the “Odd Bunch
Bag” in Countdown as this is
often half the price because
the item is an odd shape.
• Look from top to bottom of
the shelves as the cheapest
items are nearly always below
eye level on the bottom
shelves.
• The specials at the front of
the supermarket can be the
same size boxes or packets
but contain less products inside.
So check weight and litres
against the original item.
e.g. Washing powder may be
the same size box but have
less in it and so you get fewer
washes from it. Cheese
could be reduced from $12
to $9 but you are purchasing
a possible 100grms less
in weight.
• Then you see the produce
stamped with “Best before”
or “Use by Date” how to interpret
this? “Best before”
means that the item is at the
peak of freshness product
but can be used afterwards.
“Use By Date” is a definite.
The product should be used
by this date.
Eggs
• Well surely these are either
“caged” or “free range”?
But NO, look on the small
pricing ticket where it will
show you the cost of each
egg in the carton. Also it is
cheaper to buy a large tray
and share the cost with family,
friends or a neighbour.
Share the eggs.
Clothes washing
• Liquid soap lasts much longer
than washing powder.
Look at number of washes
written on side of box or
bottle.
Dish washing
• Easy to buy those tablets for
your machine but it is far
cheaper and goes further to
buy Dish wash powder. E-Co
products are much cheaper
and they go further.
Toilet rolls / Paper towels
• Check the number of sheets
written on side of packet.
“Homebrand”; “Budget”;
“E-Co”; “Pams”; “Earthware”;
These brands are
worth looking at as they are
normally cheaper.
• If you buy a loaf of bread,
then split it into small packs
or bags and freeze, just pull
a bag out when you need it,
no wastage this way.
• Dish wash liquid, buy the
large 2 litre budget container
and half fill a 1 litre container,
top up with water and
use from this smaller one,
lasts twice as long.
Supermarkets
Pak-N-Save:
Generally the cheapest owned
by Foodstuffs NZ
New World:
Can be expensive but has a big
variety owned by Foodstuffs
NZ. Promotions usually come
out on a Wednesday. Both of
these are franchised out to individual
owners.
Countdown:
Middle of the road with prices
and owned by Progressive
Foods, Australian based. Promotions
usually out on a Thursday
and Friday.
Store your fruit in the fridge
rather than in a bowl on the
side, this way it will last longer.
Liz
Crockpot Feijoa and Date Chutney
2kg feijoa, washed
1 cup onions, diced
300gm dried pitted dates
300gm raw sugar
75gm crystallized ginger, sliced
2Tbsp curry powder, mild
2Tsp ground cumin
2Tsp ground cinnamon
2Tsp ground cardamom
Pinch ground chilli powder (optional)
Pinch black pepper
2Tsp salt
2 limes, halved
2 cups cider vinegar
½ cup malt vinegar
1 cup water
Top and tail feijoa and slice. Place all
the above ingredients with the feijoa
in a crockpot.
Turn to high and cook for approx. 3
hours. Stirring occasionally. Time may
differ depending on your crockpot.
The limes are for flavour so can be
removed before chutney placed in
jars. Place in sterilised jars and put lid
on tightly. Feijoa can be replaced with
apples or pears.
Do you
remember polio?
Some younger people have not heard of
poliomyelitis but there are an estimated
10,000 Kiwis who contracted the potentially
deadly virus.
The polio virus wreaked
havoc during epidemics
of 1911 through to the
60s. While some people were
left with paralysis, most appeared
to have bounced back
to reasonably good health and
went on to live full and active
lives; getting married, having
children, and careers. Then the
boom fell.
Thirty to forty years after the
initial illness, the ‘late-effects’
of polio (or Post-Polio Syndrome)
often move in uninvited,
causing havoc once again.
Debilitating general fatigue,
muscle and joint aches and
pains, difficulty swallowing
and breathing, new weakness
and sleep issues. Mobility may
mean the dreaded calipers, or
other orthotic aids need to be
worn again.
Polio may be close to worldwide
eradication globally,
but we want others to know
“WE’RE STILL HERE” and need
ongoing support.
There is good news on
this front. New Zealand has
a national body (Polio NZ Inc)
whose members work diligently
to provide the necessary
support.
Our program manager (Gordon
Jackman) has made connections
with DHBs around NZ
to ensure medical professionals
have vital information regarding
polio and the late-effects,
ensuring specialised care and
support are provided.
Gordon is also passionate
about researching and educating
orthotists about new
technologies used to provide
specific mobility assistance for
our unique requirements.
This work is very exciting for
us and many will directly benefit
from this mahi.
Polio NZ Inc organises an
annual retreat usually held in
Rotorua at Queen Elizabeth
Health and Wellness Spa.
(Queen Elizabeth Hospital) Polio
NZ has always maintained a
close relationship with QE and
it has become a home away
from home for many of us.
QE runs programmes specific
to the needs of those with
late-effects of polio where it
addresses such things as issues
of mobility and general wellbeing.
PNZI’s goal of creating “Centres
of Excellence” throughout
New Zealand is starting to be
realised with clinics established
in Auckland, Wellington and
Christchurch.
These clinics are free to
Polio NZ members and are a
wonderful place to get focused
treatment for this neuro-muscular
disease.
Although it is difficult to
ascertain the exact number
of New Zealanders who contracted
polio, the organisation
continues to add names to the
register as they are contacted.
As the register grows, it
not only reveals the numbers
of people living with the potential
late-effects of polio but
also indicates to government
that indeed ‘we are still here’
and need support in a variety
of ways.
If you have never registered
with Polio NZ Inc, we encourage
you to make contact
through the free phone number
or website listed below.
You do not have to become
a member of Polio NZ Inc. to
have your name on the register,
however, if you wish to
become a member, simply pay
a $15 annual membership fee
and you will receive regular
information about treatment
advances, events, information
about the annual Retreat, and
the courses at Queen Elizabeth
Health and Wellness Spa
(Which can often be funded).
Find the support group in
your region, they are very welcoming
to new members.
Special days to
celebrate in June;
July and August:
JUNE
June 4 - Queen’s Birthday
Weekend
The Queen’s Official Birthday is
the selected day in Commonwealth
countries to celebrate
the birthday of the current
monarch.
This was first introduced in
Britain in 1748 for King George
II. It is always celebrated on
the first Monday in June in
New Zealand.
Celebrations are often official
and tie in with a Birthday
Honours List and military ceremonies.
Many people see this
as the last long weekend holiday
before winter sets in.
The Queen’s actual birthday
is on 21 April when she will be
92.
June 5 - Environmental Day
and the shortest day
of the year
High on the agenda this year
is ‘Plastic Bags’. The invention
of plastic was greeted with enthusiasm
and has been used
for many sources of protection
and convenience throughout
the world. BUT enough is
enough.
It has become an obsession
that is poisoning the world of
it’s natural wonders.
It is a growing threat to our
marine life, coral reefs, seas
and ocean’s and many other
areas that we take for granted.
So how about all of us
over 65 years old doing ourbit
by ditching those plastic
supermarket bags and using
cloth bags (sold in supermarkets).
After all our parents and
grandparents did not have
plastic bags and they survived.
You will not forget the bag
if you put it in the driver’s pocket
of your car.
June 13–16 - New
Zealand National Fieldays
As per this quarter magazine’s
theme we look at Fieldays.
This is an important event being
the largest agricultural and
business event in the Southern
Hemisphere attracting people
from all over the world.
The society was born from
the vision and determination of
a small group of business farmers
in 1968 promoting a town
and country show for farmers.
In 50 years it has grown as
a worldwide event promoting
JULY
July 1 - International
Joke Day.
Please send me some more
jokes for our magazine.
July 7 - International Chocolate
Day
I love this idea introduced in
Europe in 1550 and is a great
excuse if you need one to eat
chocolate all day.
July 31st - International
Day of Friendship
This is a day introduced by the
United Nations to observe and
promote peace and friendship
from and to all diverse backgrounds
of people worldwide.
AUGUST
August 13 - International
left handers day
Today being left handed is
considered to be an attribute.
However in the past, being left
handed was seen as having
a link to the devil and some
people were forced to become
right handed. Now 10 percent
of the population are left
handed.
August 19 - World
Photo Day.
So out with the cameras and
catch some unusual photos for
family albums.
August 23 - National
Burger Day
Not to be confused with International
Burger Day on May 28th.
Who would have thought there
would be two days in the year
to promote burgers? The original
name was Hamburger and
is believed to originate from the
German city of Hamburg.

Inflexible winter energy
payments poorly targeted
The Labour-led coalition
Government recently
delivered their first Budget
and significantly increased
spending in some unexpected
areas, but didn’t honour numerous
election promises including
making doctors’ visits
cheaper for everyone or ending
school donations this year.
One of their recent decisions
was to implement a winter energy
payment for all superannuitants
and some others.
While I welcome extra assistance
going to those of my
constituents who rely solely on
the pension for their livelihood,
I am surprised that the winter
energy payment is also being
made to many who are earning
six and seven figure incomes,
and I’m disappointed that the
payments are inflexible.
When the measure was debated
in Parliament, I moved
an amendment to enable recipients
to take the payment in
a lump sum if preferred, as that
would help some people to
lower their energy costs significantly
over time. For example,
they might choose to replace
antiquated and costly heating
systems with more modern
and environmentally-friendly
systems such as heat pumps.
I was also hoping some people
would have been able to
use the funds to improve their
home insulation, but again that
would have required a payment
in a lump sum.
Unfortunately, MPs from the
governing parties voted down
my amendment so many pensioners
will not be able to use
the payments in a manner that
best suits their circumstances.
Petrol prices are increasing
rapidly. We believe the Government
should not add to these
costs with their new fuel taxes
at this time, not least because
(in a classic case of giving with
one hand while taking with the
other) they will more than cancel
the winter energy payments,
and we will soon see fuel-related
price increases passed on to
consumers at the supermarket
and in many other areas.
Kind regards to all Grey
Power members,
Tim Macindoe
Petrol taxes show disdain for household budgets
Petrol prices have surged
up and into news headlines
in recent weeks. No
station in Hamilton currently
sells 91 for under $2 and analysts
predict prices could top
$3 across the country.
In spite of the pressure on
households and businesses,
JOKE
A Farmer was milking one
of his cows.
He had just started getting
a good rhythm going
when a bug flew into one
of the cow’s ears.
The Farmer didn’t think
much about it until the
bug squirted out into the
bucket of milk.
It went in one ear and out
the Udder.
the Government is pressing on
with its new fuel excises: one
nationwide in one in Auckland.
But as there is no clear
way to ensure the Auckland
fuel excise is collected exclusively
in Auckland, it could well
be spread across the country
instead so everyone can share
the pain.
To make things worse for
the Waikato, the Government’s
only new plan for us
is a $20 million passenger rail
subsidy along with the Bay of
Plenty. This represents an almost
$400 million loss of new
project funding from 2020
compared to today.
The Waikato Expressway
project has kept our share of
funding roughly in line with
our population for the last decade
but without it, the tax we
already pay and the new fuel
taxes are effectively subsidising
Auckland’s airport to CBD
tram.
The proposed expressway
extension from Cambridge
to Piarere gives the Waikato
a much fairer proportion of
funding for new projects, and
National had committed to the
project without needing new
fuel taxes.
It is hard to believe that an
Auckland tram will ease the
pain at the petrol pump for
Waikato residents, but that’s
the situation we find ourselves
in.
Fifty Shades of Grey:
By Pam Ayers
The missus bought a Paperback
Down Shepton Mallet way,
I had a look inside her bag:
...Twas “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
Well I just left her to it,
And at ten I went to bed.
An hour later she appeared;
The sight filled me with dread.
In her left hand she held a rope;
And in her right a whip!
She threw them down upon the
floor,
And then began to strip.
Well fifty years or so ago;
I might have had a peek;
But Mabel hasn’t weathered well;
She’s eighty four next week!
Watching Mabel bump and grind;
Could not have been much
grimmer.
And things then went from bad
to worse;
She toppled off her Zimmer!
She struggled back upon her feet’
A couple minutes later;
She put her teeth back in and said
I am a dominator!
Now if you knew our Mabel,
You’d see why I just spluttered,
I’d spent two months in traction
For the last complaint I’d uttered.
She stood there nude and naked
Bent forward just a bit
I went to hold her sensual like
And stood on her left tit!
Mabel screamed, her teeth shot
out;
My God what had I done?
She moaned and groaned then
shouted out:
Step on the other one!
Well readers, I can tell no more:
Of what occurred that day.
Suffice to say my jet black hair,
Turned ‘Fifty Shades of Grey.’
Cataract
Surgery
A CATARACT IS A GRADUAL CLOUDING
OF THE LENS INSIDE THE EYE. HAVING A
CATARACT CAN BE LIKE LOOKING THROUGH
A CLOUDY WINDOW AND MAY TAKE YOU
AWAY FROM DOING YOUR USUAL DAY-TO-
DAY ACTIVITIES.
Cataract development is a normal process
of aging. Cataracts can also be present at
birth, develop from injuries, certain diseases,
medications or long-term exposure to
sunlight.
As scary as cataracts might sound, modern
cataract surgery can usually restore vision
lost to cataracts — and can often reduce your
dependence on glasses as well.
When you are no longer able to see well enough to do the things you like to do,
cataract surgery should be considered. Thankfully cataract surgery is one of the safest
and most effective surgical procedures performed today. Surgery involves removing the
cataract and replacing it with an artificial lens. The procedure typically is performed on
an outpatient basis and does not require an overnight stay care facility. Recovery time is
quick, and vision can start to return to the affected eye within a few hours of surgery.
Hamilton Eye Clinic have a team of highly qualified and experienced
Ophthalmologists, with fellowship training in various subspecialities, providing
an Ophthalmic service of excellence.
We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services, including
surgery in our adjoining purpose-build facility Bridgewater Day Surgery.
