INTRODUCING THE
TOOLS OF
TOMORROW

ARCADIS ASIA
Digital & Innovation Agenda 2018
In August 2017, various Asia leaders from different
service lines came together at the Digital Agenda
workshop in Kuala Lumpur to prioritise the key areas
of focus for our Digital and Innovation strategy. The
purpose of the workshop was to:
• Envision the future of digital for Arcadis Asia
• Understand who are the providers we can
leverage on in our network
• Discuss what platforms we can use or build on
• Build a set of work streams which can work
towards digitalization and innovation
From these key themes, the team came out with Arcadis
Asia Digital and Innovation Agenda - made up of four
pillars to drive acceleration regionally and begin
transforming our business and develop new core
competences:
4. BUILD THE DIGITAL COMMUNITY
This pillar focuses on upskilling and investing in
our people today to build on the required skills
and create a digital community to foster design
led thinking and understanding of technology
environments.
We aim to:
- Train our Senior Management with Vlerick
Business School to be Digital Translators
- Have in place 100 Trained BIM Managers
- Develop a cohort of BIM Navigators to drive
Arcadis’ ‘100% BIM’ initiative
1. BUILD NEW PROCESSES/IDEAS
There are small pockets of innovation happening
across the region. We need to harness and
streamline the current knowledge, processes and
align with the global movement to ensure they have
the right environment to be sustainable. This pillar
also will focus on how we can foster new ideas to
truly be an innovative business.
2. BUILD NEW PLATFORMS/ECOSYSTEMS
To drive acceleration of client focused solutions, we
will connect new tools to our people and develop new
ecosystem partners that allow us to scale up work
efficiently and effectively.
3. TOOLS OF TOMORROW (ToTs)
There are three time horizons – today (H1), tomorrow
(H2) and the day after tomorrow (H3). We will
continue to research and develop new tools which
can give us an edge in all our service lines.

NEWS & UPDATES
4.
Vlerick Business School - Digital Leadership Workshop
Arcadis globally has been enrolling leaders to the Vlerick
Business School’s Digital Leadership program to support
the development of transforming our leaders into digital
translators and lead the change required in the business.
Having signed a knowledge partnership with the school in
January 2018, Arcadis Asia has been working with
Vlerick to design a three-day digital leadership program
tailored to our industry and business needs. The program
will allow our leadership to cater to the demands of their
market sectors and countries but also equip them with
the design led thinking mindset to drive innovation.
Day 3: Leading digital transformation
• Recap of day 2 learnings- B4B, Give/Get/
Risk, Deep Orange Design thinking
• 4 V’s digital leadership game
• Next steps & commitments for Arcadis
Asia
On 14 May, 20 leaders across the region came together
Natalia Pujiyanti joined one of the first
workshops and shared her feedback:
“I got this opportunity to join one of the digital leadership
workshops and it opened my mind about how before
you can prepare a digital strategy or begin to consider
different technology, you first need to understand your
client needs. Client success is not delivered just by
using BIM or any other new technology or apps – it is by
understanding their challenges and coming up with the
right solution that will allow us to the meet their needs.
“Our people also need to understand the story behind
our digital transformation and how it can deliver
success. I am starting to share the four realities within
the Indonesia digital community. I hope Expedition DNA
can also help engage our people on the digital journey.”
UPDATE ON BIM MANAGEMENT
TRAINING
We have committed to train 100 BIM Manages by the end
of 2018 – but why do we need it?
We need an organized, educated team of BIM Managers
using a consistent approach across the region to prepare us
for working in digital environment. BIM Managers will be able
to sell BIM services to other and support new users in the
future.
The information coming to us will increasingly be in BIM
Models. It is important that we are able to advise our Design
Consultants how best to organize the models to improve
Design Team collaboration and help us to work efficiently.
Competent knowledge of BIM Management will also allow our
people to participate in meaningful BIM Modelling
discussions with designers.
What should we expect of our BIM Managers?
BIM Managers should be practicing those skills whenever
there is an opportunity. Part of their role is to help the digital
community in its understanding of BIM, improve and
standardize workflows in the BIM movements, and to coach
and lead their own teams.
CREATING BIM NAVIGATORS
Regionally, we will also develop a cohort of BIM
Navigators to help:
• To provide an understanding of BIM processes
and benefits
• To educate participants with necessary
knowledge and skills how to navigate the 3D
model and extract information
• To support and drive Arcadis’ ‘100% BIM’
initiative, every Quantity Surveyor a Cost
modeller, every Project Manager modelling
progress and control through BIM collaboration,
every Designer a construction information
modeller.
We expect to have 100 BIM Managers in place and
train half of our people in BIM Navigation by the end
of 2018. We will complete this training in 2019 when
100% of our people will have received BIM
Navigation training.
The training is a globally recognised structured process and
it is fast tracked from the old methods of "learning on the job"
by watching BIM Modellers!
What happens next?
Once our BIM Managers are comfortable they will go for BRE
certifications and Arcadis is aiming for 20 trained BIM
Managers with BIM certifications for the organization.
NEWS & UPDATES
DEEP ORANGE IN ASIA
WHAT IS DEEP ORANGE?
Deep Orange is a co-creation and innovation program
developed and hosted by Arcadis. In a nutshell, it is a
structured four-day intense problem-solving workshop with
clients and their stakeholders, working-out and challenging
the many solutions posed by participants/stakeholders with
the eventual production of a prototype of the agreed
solution. The prototype can be a mobile app, a methodology,
a process etc. usually enabled / assisted by a digital tool.
The participants include subject matter experts from Arcadis
with support coming from the likes of IBM, Microsoft,
Accenture, etc.
We have already held Deep Oranges in four major cities
globally from Amsterdam, Manchester, Eindhoven to
New York. For the first time, Deep Orange will come to
Asia and the fifth Deep Orange will be held from the 16
to 19 July in Kuala Lumpur.
ASIA DEEP ORANGE
We are well underway in our planning with clients and
colleagues. For the first time we will partner with InvestKL
to co-create and find solutions to accelerate and support
improving liveability in Kuala Lumpur.
We will be bringing in a great range of clients and public
bodies each with their own defined problem statement:
minded businesses and other early adopters of digital
technology.
HOW WE DO DEEP ORANGE
Deep Orange workshop teams use design thinking to
tackle digital disruption to their businesses and enhance
their competitiveness. Design thinking is an innovative
problem-solving process rooted in a set of skills. At a high
level, the steps involved in the design thinking process are
simple:
1. Fully understand the problem
2. Explore a wide range of possible solutions
3. Iterate extensively through prototyping & testing
Finally, implement through the customary deployment
mechanisms.
The output from the process extends beyond digital tools -
to innovative ecosystems including service design,
business models, governance and planning
Arcadis' journey to embed digital in our business has
gathered significant momentum with the announcement
that one of the world's leading global start-up networks,
'Techstars', has partnered with us bringing a truly new
'outside-in' approach to help us deliver on our vision for the
future.
Embracing digital innovation
With your involvement, we are taking a phased approach to
realizing the potential afforded by digital. Arcadis' digital
transformation is based across three time-bound areas of
focus.
Today we are working to bring proven technologies to our
solutions and clients – including BIM, and Advanced
Analytics.
We have a focus on Tomorrow as we co-create – internally
and with external partners – solutions to meet the needs of
our clients and citizens in the next 3-5 years – already
evidenced through the successful Deep Orange program.
Finally, we have a focus on what happens After Tomorrow,
underpinned by the creation of a Vision 2030 that will
explore how Arcadis will deliver on our shared commitment
to 'improve quality of life' in the cities of the future. This is
where Techstars will support.
Who are techstars?
Techstars is a worldwide network that helps
entrepreneurs succeed. Working in partnership
with businesses across different industry sectors,
they identify and incubate start-ups and
entrepreneurs that have the potential to have an
impact on the future direction in their field.
The Arcadis Smart Cities Accelerator, Powered
by Techstars will do exactly that for the built and
natural environment, strengthening Arcadis'
digital and innovation capabilities while helping
entrepreneurs bring Smart City technologies to
market.
Arcadis will support the selected companies,
providing mentors to help with subject-matter
expertise, client connections and industry insight.
Learnings from this process will be brought back
into our business to help us 'innovate outside the
fence' and bring the very latest innovations to our
clients.
What’s next?
At the moment, the partnership is still new but we
will continue to keep you updated how you can
get involved in the program in upcoming
newsletters so watch this space!

BUILD NEW
PLATFORMS
AND
ECOSYSTEMS
NEWS & UPDATES
Introducing a new benchmarking platform
A considerable amount of effort currently goes into
collecting project data. The process is inefficient and
inconsistent, and an ongoing problem for many Cost
Planners in the business.
In Quarter 1, identified this as an area where we could make
a difference and embarked on a benchmarking sprint to
develop a new workflow for collecting project data in the
future.
The sprint was jointly funded by Arcadis NV and Arcadis
Asia, with design thinking facilitated but IBM IX. The sprint
culminated in testing sessions by our colleagues in the UK
and a two-day workshop attended by Arcadians from Hong
Kong, Malaysia and GEC Manila together with MMC-
Gamuda, one of our major Malaysian clients.
Thanks go to all our colleagues who contributed to the
success of the sprint and we look forward to sharing future
success with you in the near future.
What’s next?
The next stage would be to allocate resources and funding
to develop this proof-of-concept into an everyday work tool
for our cost managers. As with all things digital, we are now
in discussions with suitable eco-systems partners with a
tentative target commencement in late Q4 2018.
Do you have an innovative idea? Speak to your Country
Digital Lead to share as it could get used in future
sprints!

TOOLS OF
TOMORROW
NEWS & UPDATES
Parametric Design
The ultimate aim of the digital agenda to create digitally
enabled services – or the Tools of Tomorrow (ToTs) – to
ensure we are equipping to meet the challenges of the
future.
In recent months, members of the digital community have
been focused on the Parametric Design – building models
using processes and computational methods. Using this we
can publish live models on the internet of mobile devices
which can be manipulated in real time.
From these live models, we are able to perform calculations
to extract live quantities obtain the required cost estimations
and visualizations.
By using these tools, we are able to provide our clients with
more accurate and efficient information, improving our
service delivery and reducing our own business costs.
