Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/backyardbiodiversity-bugs-in-lincoln OVER THE last month I’ve noticed the leaves of my glasshouse peppers have been decimated by large green caterpillars, some of which had pupated on the underside of leaves beneath silk. Wanting to identify these voracious pests, I plucked a few leaves containing the brown and green pupae and reared them in a jar until the adults emerged. After a week or two, several 18mm long moths appeared, their colouring predominately a mixture of brown but with two creamy coloured spots in the centre of their forewings. *includes cost of HIGH WALL HEAT PUMP FLOOR CONSOLE back-to-back Classic HIGH install WALL GE HEAT Series PUMP HIGH WALL HEAT PUMP *includes cost of HIGH FH50 WALL 6.0kW HEAT Heat Pump PUMP KJ50 FLOOR 5.8kW CONSOLE INVEST back-to-back only, conditions apply only, conditions Heat Pump HIGH GE25 apply WALL 3.0kW HEAT Heat Pump PUMP HIGH WALL HEAT PUMP GE25 $3,299* $3,299* $2,149* 3.0kW Heat Pump EF50 $3,099* 5.8kW Heat Pump $2,149* $3,099* FREE 0800 324 678 at pump specialists. sultation umps are and super quote. energy et. LYING IN WAIT: The tomato looper can decimate your garden before it pupates and turns into a moth. They also have prominent tufts on their thorax which are very distinctive. The green or tomato looper, chrysodeixis chalcites, an exotic European species, was identified by iNaturalist NZ. Females can lay 1500-3000 eggs during their lifespan and the species can have five to nine generations per year, depending on climate. The larvae feed on many plant species including tomatoes, beans, peppers, potatoes, comfrey, herbs and sow thistle. At least six parasitic wasps are known to attack this pest in New Zealand. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday June 13 2018 23 Lincoln down but not out of netball title race SPORTS • BY Jacob Page LINCOLN A’s stranglehold on the Selwyn netball title appears to be in serious danger. Lincoln, who won the title for the third year in a row unbeaten in 2017, have already lost twice this season and only finished third on the ladder behind Greenpark A and Broadfield in the first round. The champions lost to Broadfield 46-45 in round one and the two teams will meet again on Saturday. Greenpark A secured top spot with a 64-57 win over Lincoln a fortnight ago with round two having begun on Saturday. The three top teams all started the second phase with comfortable wins. Broadfield beat Southbridge A 60-40, Lincoln beat Greenpark B 70-47 and Greenpark A beat newly-promoted Southbridge B 78-22. Southbridge B won promotion for the second round, while West Melton dropped out of the top flight. Lincoln coach Vanessa OBSTACLE: Broadfield’s Georgie Bolton attempts to block Lincoln goal attack Vanessa Robinson’s shot last season. The two teams will meet again on Saturday. PHOTO KAREN CASEY Robinson acknowledged everyone enjoyed seeing their reign of dominance under threat, but there was no panic in the team yet. “If anything, this makes the season more exciting,” she said. Robinson said in both losses it was the last 5min of the game which cost them. “In the game against Broadfield, it could have gone either way. They shot between 88 and 92 per cent and we only shot in the high 70 per cents,” she said. “We were in the game against Greenpark until the final 5min and again it’s just the top two inches letting us down, “I wouldn’t write us off just yet,” she said. West Melton win 30 medals in home gym competition THE WEST Melton Gymnastic Club’s annual competition proved to be a winning one for the hosts when they scooped 30 medals. Gymnasts from Ashburton, Blenheim, Hokitika, Greymouth, Olympia, the Christchurch School of Gymnastics and Dynamic, also in Ashburton, came to show off their routines at the Rolleston Community Centre. West Melton had a strong team, with 86 gymnasts competing, 20 more than in 2017. The gymnasts competed in grades from Gym Fun for five and six-year-olds all the way through to the elite grade. West Melton won 10 gold medals, including Khloe Spooner and Aleksander Bryant in the girls and boys gym fun grade. Morgan Smith and Briar Croskery were first in grade two, while Dino McRae won the boys competition. Kate Vee won the girls iron competition, while Ryan Partington won the boys. Amber Pankhurst won the girls bronze competition. RooRoo MacRae won the boys silver competition. West Melton coach Kyla Higgins came out of retirement to compete in the gold level. The 19-year-old started gymnastics as a pre-schooler and competed in trampolining for six years both nationally and internationally After five years away from the competition scene, she finished fifth out of 15.
