2 [Edition datE] 11 Your guide to Show Homes & New Sections in the Selwyn District Filtration Systems – take control of your own water There has been a lot of talk lately about water quality and safety. The campylobacter contamination in Havelock North’s drinking-water supply in 2016 refocussed national attention on the issue, and both government and regional councils regularly address the issue. Hardly a local news bulletin goes by now without some mention of it, including stories, in jurisdictions where the authorities have chosen to chlorinate the water supply, of water that smells and tastes as if it came straight from the nearest public swimming pool. And therein lies the heart of the debate. What measures are necessary to assure water quality and safety in any given area? Currently, according to its website, the Selwyn District Council (SDC), across its 30 water supplies, “uses a variety of water treatment methods, including secure ground water (to meet current New Zealand Drinking Water Standards), Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, selective abstraction and filtration, and chlorination.” The Council recently sought public opinion on the issue as part of its Long Term Plan 2018-2028 consultation process. The options for consideration were to introduce chlorination to water supplies based on a risk assessment; introduce chlorination for all Council water supplies; or no additional chlorination. Some water supplies in Selwyn are already being chlorinated. While councils wrestle with these questions, many homeowners are taking control of their own water. Contamination fears, taste quality, allergies, and medical necessities are just some of the reasons you may want to consider an in-home water filtration system. Ken Davidson, South Island Master Franchisee for Aqua Filter, supplies and installs a variety of water treatment systems specifically designed to eliminate harsh chemicals and pollutants, whether from town, or farm and rural water supplies. In spite of which measures councils employ, the water reaching your house may still contain either potentially dangerous bacterial contamination, or the taste and smell of chlorine. “If you are on an untreated (water can be contaminated even after council UV treatment of a water supply), or a non-chlorinated supply, and you are worried about the safety of your water, you’d install a UV system,” Ken says. A whole-house, 3 stage Jumbo Aqua UV System does not change the taste, colour, or odour of water, it simply removes the risk of illness caused by microbial contamination. If you just want better tasting water, one of the under-bench, bench-top, or inline filtration systems might be best for you, Ken says. These use a .5 or 1 micron carbon block to filter water, and are easily installed into your existing kitchen. Whole-house carbon filtration systems expand the benefits of that one tap in the kitchen to every tap in the house. These can also extend the life of household pipes and water-using appliances, provide healthier water for showers and baths, and do much more, most importantly provide clean, safe, pure tasting water throughout your home. These can be fitted to most existing houses, and easily incorporated into new build designs. All systems require installation by qualified tradespeople, and Ken and his team facilitate this. Ken also advises on all matters relating to providing clean, safe, filtered water, as situations and needs can vary significantly.
