Loyola falls just short of final four, ends season in supers
Even when things aren’t
going well, the Loyola
Academy baseball team
doesn’t quit playing until
the very last out.
Despite no Ramblers
reaching base through the
first four-and-a-third innings
and facing a six-run
deficit, Loyola (23-10-1)
fought back. They made
things as tough as they
could on Huntley during
the Class 4A Schaumburg
Super-Sectional closing
the gap to three runs.
But ultimately June
4 was Huntley’s day as
it ended Loyola’s terrific
season 8-4 at Boomers
Stadium. Too many
things went Huntley’s
way. Whether it was Matt
Rodriguez hitting for the
cycle with RBIs during
every hit or centerfielder
Joey Petryniec making
some fantastic catches or
Red Raiders’ pitcher Elijah
Paplanus being perfect
facing the first 13 Loyola
batters, there was too
much to overcome.
bottom of the first on
Loyola’s Jake Novak slides safely into third base before the tag can be applied by Huntley’s Evan Tocmo during
the teams’ super-sectional matchup June 4 in Schaumburg. Tracy Allen/22nd Century Media
But it was the third inning
that put Loyola in a
big hole as the Red Raiders
scored four runs on
Kamrin Hoffmann’s RBI
double, an RBI triple from
Rodriguez, an RBI single
by Andrew Henkle and an
RBI double from Jason
Peters to make it 5-0.
“That was probably the
best offensive performance
we’ve competed against
this year,” Loyola coach
Nick Bridich said. “They
hit the ball hard and were
able to get some extra base
hits. They had a good combination
of things going
with how they were hitting
the ball, their pitching early
on and their defense making
some great plays.”
Rodriguez got his third
RBI of the game in the
fourth on a double extending
his team’s advantage
to 6-0.
But Loyola finally got
something going in the
fifth, getting on the board
on Dan Hrvojevic’s RBI
single. Trey Torain then
walked with the bases
loaded cutting the deficit
to 6-2. But with the
bases loaded, Henry Haracz
hit the ball deep to
center where Petryniec
made a tough catch to
end the rally. Earlier in
the game Petryniec made
a catch despite colliding
with his teammate in the
outfield.
“I thought that could
have changed things,”
Loyola’s Matt Raymond,
who ended the perfect
game bid with a double
in the fifth, said. “It was
hit deep and the outfield
was playing us deeper the
whole game. We were doing
the opposite and they
had some hits over us.
When some guys aren’t
playing well, others have
stepped up for us the
