6 | June 14, 2018 | The winnetka Current news winnetkacurrent.com Quirky animals help kick off summer for Winnetka children Alexa Burnell Freelance Reporter In an effort to help keep the preschool boredom blues at bay, the Winnetka Community House hosted the Dave DiNasio’s Traveling World of Reptiles show on June 6. With a gap between the ending of preschool and the start of summer camp, Community House Program Manager Patti Ruiz felt some slithery, slimy and somewhat scary creatures would keep little ones fascinated and engaged. “Today’s program is part of our showcase days, where we provide some type of fun activity on days off from school,” she said. “We’ve hosted magicians, jugglers, you name it — anything that resonates with the preschool crowd. We’ve hosted Dave DiNasio’s group several times before, and it is always a hit.” The 140 registered preschool-aged children were riveted by animal handler, Brendan Baker, who taught kids how amphibians and arachnoids help the planet. “Even though we often think of spiders and frogs as slimy, creepy or a little bit disgusting, these creatures help our environment,” Baker said. “Spiders, for example, weave a web that Children take turns holding up a boa constrictor. catches mosquitoes and other bugs that could make humans sick.” Next, he talked about herbivores, such as Rocky, a 6-year-old tortoise. “Rocky is just a baby at age 6. Many turtles like him will live to be 150 years old,” Baker said. “The shell is made of bone and his head retracts to protect himself from predators.” Pebble, a 13-year-old Russian tortoise that came from Afghanistan, was also on display, as was the bluetongued lizard, Wet Willy, who fascinated the young crowd. “His blue tongue is used to ward off predators,” Baker said. “Wet Willy is also an omnivore, meaning he eats plants and meats, just like humans, and has camouflage skin-coloring, which also keeps him safe and disguised from other creatures.” Kids also got a kick out of Booger the pixie frog, who enjoyed being held by many brave children who were not scared of the wet and robust amphibian. At the very end, Baker pulled out a few different varieties of snakes, including a boa constrictor, while a handful of preschoolers bravely held him for the entire crowd to see. As Ruiz watched on, she was pleased to see the room filled with squeals and giggles from the young, enthusiastic crowd. “I hope today gave these kids an opportunity to learn something new and have a little fun while they wait for the summer to officially begin,” she said. Hiland’s situation was unique, as her two children, Sophie and Owen, were graduating from NSCDS this year. Hiland, who is in her 12th year at the school, will also be leaving at the end of the year. “My [twins] are graduating and going to school on the East Coast,” Hiland told The Current. “We’re from New York City. ... We’re moving back there. But, clearly this was a good place for us all.” Hiland wanted to stray away from the typical “what you should learn after high school,” she said, and instead, she shared how to ask the right questions for yourself and what she hoped for the Class of 2018. “In spite of spending some serious time in the North Shore bubble, you have learned a great deal about the world beyond it,” Hiland said during commencement. “I hope that your open minds stay with you all your lives; I hope you will continually seek out new ideas, new experiences, and new friends, even as you continue to value those that have always mattered to you.” The Head of Upper School Dave Potter presented the Class of 2018, while Head of School Tom Flemma gave out the diplomas. “Our seniors have distinguished themselves in a range of ways from outstanding scholarship to meaningful service to full engagement with our co-curricular and extracurricular offerings,” Potter told The Current. “This group of seniors has embraced partnering with their teachers in ways that have enabled them to flourish academically. “As members of a [junior kindergarten] to 12th-grade community, our seniors have modeled values of kindness, gratitude and appreciation. They have been good friends and strong self-advocates. Without question, they are positioned to thrive next year on the next leg of their journey.” After the graduation ceremony, a reception for all immediately followed.
