Mid-Valley Claims Association News Network • June 2018 5 Cost Estimating with Engineer, Kurt Ahlich at June 15 MVCA Join the MVCA in welcoming June 15, 2018 Luncheon Guest Speaker, Kurt Ahlich, PE, of ARCCA. Mr. Ahlich will be presenting a look at Cost Estimating property loss claims. Once the responsibility for damage has been assigned (and often while it is being assigned), the question of how much the repairs will cost becomes equally, if not more, important. This presentation will discuss how cost estimates are developed, the limitations of cost estimating, and means in which opposing estimates can be reconciled. Kurt Ahlich is a Senior Engineer, and his forensic investigation expertise includes cause and origin failure analysis, civil and geotechnical analysis, and condition assessments of single-family/multi-family/custom residences, manufacturing facilities, commercial properties and office/government buildings. He is also experienced in construction methodologies and defects, as well as cost estimation. His representative forensic engagements include construction defects, foundation movement, structural failures, wind damage, impact damage, water intrusion, plumbing failures, soil heave and settlement, post-fire structural issues, hazardous waste site remediation, and vibration effects resulting from construction and earthquakes. Kurt’s general construction experience includes construction management, procurement, cost tracking, cost estimation, scheduling, and dispute resolution. His specific design and construction experience includes foundations and subsurface structures, shoring and underpinning systems, retaining walls, subsurface waterproofing systems, piping, water collection systems, erosion control, hazardous waste site remediation, landslide repair, mass excavation, residential framing and remodeling. Mr. Ahlich holds an M.S. degree in Geotechnical Engineering, from San Jose State University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering, from the University of Texas at Austin. Kurt has testified in court and at depositions/mediations and has been a designated expert in many cases.
