MATTER OF SAFETY In Preparation of Hurricane Season by Andy Phillips, agent State Farm Insurance Co., 7608 W. Sand Lake Road, Orlando, 407-354-1320 ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT WILDFIRES. www.smokeybear.com The first of June marked the beginning of the 2018 hurricane season. If you remember, just one year ago, we saw Hurricane Harvey, which caused major flooding in Houston; Hurricane Irma, which came through Orlando and the Central Florida area; and Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico. For the 2018 hurricane season, officials of the National Oceanic and HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY FROM THE STAFF OF THE SOUTHWEST ORLANDO BULLETIN! Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5). In each category, these predictions are higher than the predictions were for 2017. It is early in the season; however, now is the time to get your plans in place, so if and when the next hurricane heads toward Florida, you will be better prepared than last year. The following tips may help you and your family get ready for the 2018 hurricane season: • Get with your insurance agent to make sure your homeowners or renters policy covers your assets. Also, discuss with the agent what your hurricane deductible is in case you have a loss due to hurricane damage. • Determine if you are in need of flood insurance. Flooding is not covered under a homeowners or renters policy. Remember what the people in Houston experienced? • Make arrangements in case you need to evacuate, and if you do, be sure to take your medications with you. • You will need to prepare a survival kit now, because supplies may be unavailable if a major storm is headed this way. Some basic items are water, food, a first-aid kit, flashlight, batteries and some cash, because banks and ATMs may not be in operation. This is not a complete list, but it is a good reference point to get you started. Preparation is the key to your safety. ª TO PUB: DO NOT PRINT INFO BELOW, FOR I.D. ONLY.
