20 WEDNESDAY JUNE 20 2018 Latest Christchurch news at SELWYN TIMES Spin your way through winter Looking for a way to stay fit this winter without having to go out in the cold? Rolleston Community Centre has just changed its spin class times to suit you! On Mondays and Wednesday classes have moved from 6.15pm to 7pm for your spinning convenience. For the rest of the term the centre is also offering a two-for-one deal for these two classes. These classes run until the end of term, 6 July. You need to book as spaces are limited. To book just call the centre on 347 2882. A full list of classes is available at Have your say on policy for gaming machines Time is running out to have a say on Selwyn District Council’s Gambling Venue Policy. The Policy sets out if and where non-casino gaming machines or “pokie machines” can be located in the district and also provides restrictions on the number of machines at the venues. Since the current policy was adopted in March 2015 the population of the district has increased from 49,500 to approximately 60,000 and there have been more restaurants and bars established to service this increased population. The Council’s existing policy has a cap of 107 machines. The proposed draft policy includes: · a cap of 120 machines · limits new venues to a maximum of five machines · venues that are operating less than five machines to have a maximum of five machines. These provisions seek to strike a balance between community benefit (funding and entertainment) and the harm caused by problem gambling. The consultation period runs from Monday 28 May to Friday 29 June. The proposed policy, submission forms and a statement of proposal are available at all Council service centres and libraries and on the Council’s website You can make your submission online or by emailing Written submissions can be addressed to: The Regulatory Manager, Selwyn District Council, Reviewed Gambling Venue Policy 2018, PO Box 90, Rolleston. Are you part of a community of sports organisation? The Everything Selwyn website has been launched and will become a comprehensive online directory of services and community groups across the Selwyn district. It has been developed by Council in conjunction with Selwyn’s four community care group and will include events and practical information for those new to New Zealand or Selwyn. Members of the Selwyn community are encouraged to register and add their own listings or events to let Selwyn know what they do.
