GBN’s Meyer earns best
actress nomination for role

Regardless of the role,
Carly Meyer always hopes
to give audiences a new
outlook on the character
she is playing.
In just two years of performances
at Glenbrook
North, Meyer has already
experienced vast success
doing so.
Meyer, a rising senior at
Glenbrook North, won the
prestigious 2017 Illinois
High School Musical Theater
Best Actress Award
for her portrayal of Hodel
in “Fiddler On The Roof.”
Following her freshman
year victory, Meyer earned
the role of Ariel in this
year’s annual Glenbrook
musical. Due to her desire
to deliver powerful performances,
Meyer felt even
more so inclined to add her
signature touch to the popular
Disney
character.
“When I
got the role
of Ariel, I
was ecstatic
and just over
the moon,” Meyer
Meyer said.
I just wanted to bring
something new to the character
and bring myself to
the character.”
As part of the preparation
process for the
musical, Meyer and the
cast spent more than two
months fine tuning the production.
During that time,
Meyer’s main focus was
finding a way she could
make the character of Ariel
— one that has been
played countless times —
feel fresh to audiences.
“People expect something
from Ariel, they expect
her to be this or that,
or want you to be what
they saw in the movie, but
I didn’t want to be that and
I couldn’t be that because
I’m not the girl who played
her in the movie,” Meyer
said. “I have to bring myself
to the character and
I have to understand her
and bring her to life but in
a way that is new and relevant.”
For her take on the
classic character, Meyer
earned another best actress
nomination from the Illinois
High School Musical
Theater Awards. And, although
she was unable to
take home the award for
the second straight year,
receiving a nomination
still holds a special place
in her heart.
“It means the entire
world to me,” she said.
“It’s such an honor to be
nominated once and to
win ... to be nominated
again is just a complete
mystery and amazing experience
to me.”
