Guillen is unfiltered about respect for veterans
‘Charlie Sheen of
baseball’ to be
special guest at golf
event for vets
JEFF VORVA, Sports Editor
Some people think Ozzie
Guillen is funny and entertaining.
Some think he is unfiltered,
profane, speaks his
mind a little too much and
has a big mouth.
He once told an umpire
“You’re not even a pimple
on your daddy’s [rear end]”
and said opposing manager
of Buck Showalter “I was
better than him, I have more
money than him and I’m better
looking than him.” Guillen
said of himself, “I’m the
Charlie Sheen of baseball,
without the drugs and a prostitute.”
Yep, as unfiltered as a
Camel cigarette and sometimes
just as toxic. He is a lot
of things to a lot of people.
But not many people
would associate him with
being a friend to the Disabled
Patriot cause.
The controversial former
White Sox player and manager,
who won a World Series
title as a skipper in 2005,
will be in Orland Park as a
special guest for the 14th
Disabled Patriot Fund’s annual
golf outing on Wednesday,
June 27, at Silver Lake
Country Club. Organizers
are still looking for golfers
and online registration is at
disabledpatriotfund.org.
Adam Russell, a member
or the Orland Park/Tinley
Park-based Disabled Patriot
Fund’s board of directors,
was a pitcher for the White
Sox in 2008 and said Guillen
is a perfect guest celebrity
for the event.
“Ozzie was my favorite
manager to play for,” Russell
said. “He wasn’t a man
of many rules. He did, however,
have one rule that resonated
with me throughout
the rest of my career that I
really appreciated: ‘Everyone
is out on the field standing
at attention for [the national
anthem].’
“Ozzie loves the opportunities
that our country presents
and respects the men
and women who fight for
those rights. Every time we
honored soldiers before a
game, Ozzie would always
make a point to go over and
shake their hand and thank
them for their service. I
couldn’t think of a better
champion for our cause at
the Disabled Patriot Fund
than Ozzie Guillen and look
forward to [a] great day for a
great cause.”
DPF officials say the organization,
which started the
year the Sox won the World
Series (2005), has raised
more than $3.5 million to
help approximately 350 injured
veterans.
