Furesø Golfklub Renovation
Furesø Case Study Golfklub, Birkerød, Copenhagen
Mackenzie & Ebert have been working with the club to update and envigorate their
courses. They have 27 holes all built at different times to the designs of Jan Sederholm.
The Club wanted to keep their golf offering fresh to maintain their high standing in
Copenhagen and Danish golf. They also knew that although they had many vast bunkers,
most of them did not test the better golfers and just slowed up play and added to the
maintenance costs.
Another part of the project was to re-style and rebuild the green surrounds.
The work was done in two phases: the Parkvej nine being rebuilt in July to September
2013 and the two remaining nines, Farum and Hestköpgørd between June and
September 2014.

Bunkers
The aim with the bunkering was to:
a. Reduce the overall area of sand significantly;
b. Make them much more attractive and visible when playing the holes;
c. Make them more in play for the better players but less in play for the shorter players,
especially from the tee.
d. To minimise the amount of hand-mowing while achieving the necessary visual
impact.

Green Surrounds
The shaping of the green surrounds was simplistic in style with some prominent
and unattractive hills.
The original construction methods prevented the grass from being mown short around
the greens and a number of the surrounds were wet.
Our recommendation was to reshape them completely and upgrade these areas to
improve the drainage, create valleys, shoulders and hills that were softer and more
mowable. The aim with this was to give players a wide range of recovery options
around the greens from a putter to a five iron to a utility club to a lob wedge.
This involved not just the creation of interesting shapes but also using a top quality
specification with improved drainage, imported sands and soils and extended and
carefully controlled irrigation. These areas were all seeded with the best cultivars of
fescue to produce fine turf in these areas.
