Review of Kedleston Park Golf Club
Bunker Renovation Project

Kedleston Park Golf Club, Derbyshire
Mackenzie & Ebert were appointed to advise the Club on the design of its course.
This started with a historic research study that proved that their course was designed by
J. S. F. Morrison of Colt & Company, Harry Colt’s design partner from the mid-1920s.
It then went on to look at all of the bunkering, overall course length
and green surrounds design and set-up.
The report was produced in the summer of 2013.
After member consultation work in October 2013, work started in the winter of 2013
All of their bunkers were rebuilt over three winters.
The course was not especially heavily bunkered and it was important not to increase the
overall number of bunkers as the greenkeeping team is not large.
Bunkers Before: 46
Existing Bunkers Reshaped: 36
Existing Bunkers Filled: 10
New Bunkers: 10
Final Bunker Count: 46
The work was carried out using a specialist golf shaper who brought in a 13T excavator
and a 6T dumper with flotation tyres.
Club staff did all cultivation, turfing and drainage.
Work was generally done between the start of November each year and the end of
January, ready for re-opening for the following playing season.
At the start of the work, the Club was in a healthy financial position,
but the membership list was not full
and they were not charging an entry fee.
The Club promoted their work heavily and word spread.
During year two of the work, the membership list was full
and they had reinstated their entry fee.
The Club also became the No 1 course in Derbyshire
in the www.top100courses, co.uk rankings.
They funded the work on the back of the additional membership revenue and entry fees.
New members who joined were asked what attracted them
and they all were attracted because it was a Club
that was investing positively in its course.
It has also been awarded Open Regional Qualifying from 2017.
