ver since 1908, this evergreen tale of inquisitive
Mole, stolid Ratty, gruff Badger and the ‘ever
in trouble’ Toad has delighted children of all ages as
well as grown-ups.
Follow their adventures from the riverbank to the
Wild Wood, the open road to the deepest dungeon,
with a thrilling climax at stately Toad Hall, as our
animal heroes overcome adversity and their own
natures to emerge victorious against the scheming
stoats and wily weasels.
By turns charming and funny, this is a splendid way to
while away a English summer’s evening.
Audience seating is strictly on a first come, first served basis
and on grass, so come early and bring a blanket or your own
chair to sit on if you want a comfy seat and a good view. But
please don’t bring high-backed chairs – they’ll stop the
people behind you seeing the show! And remember, it can
get cold at the end of the evening, even in the middle of
summer (it is England after all), so please bring warm
clothing, rugs, and so on - just in case.
A barbecue and outdoor bar will be available from 7.00pm on
performance nights. Full bar meals will be available at the hotel at
any time - but reserving a table is recommended.
The play takes place on licensed premises by kind permission of
Coulsdon Manor, a Bespoke Hotel. So out of consideration to our
hosts, you are respectfully asked not to bring your own food or drink
for consumption on the premises.
Thank you.
Realising that their dream was a lot
less daunting with two people
involved, they decided to set about
making it a reality and formed a
partnership.
As if heard by the gods, they
discovered that a local wine shop in
Chipstead had been closed for the
past few years and was available to
be taken over.
A better opportunity wasn't going to
come along.
Our Story
This is a story about dreams,
persistence, friendship and a lot
of wine.
When short Steve met tall Thomas
for the first time it was at a mutual
friend's birthday drinks.
Steve, always on the look out for an
opportunity to talk about wine,
spotted that Thomas had picked an
interesting wine from the menu.
They then proceeded to ignore their
partners and everyone else at the
party to speak about wine for the
entire night.
Did they know how to run a wine
shop? No, but they decided to take
a leap of faith and learn on the way,
certain that their passion would help
them to overcome any obstacles.
So here we are, the dream is now a
reality and we hope that The Grape
Variety can soon be your new
favourite wine shop
Opening Hours:
COMING VERY SOON
It soon emerged that they both
harboured the same lifelong burning
ambition, to open their own wine
shop.
Sweet Recipe
Lemon & Almond
Sandwich Cookies
These delightful crisp and buttery lemon and almond cookies have
a tangy layer of lemon curd in the middle.
Ingredients:
• 115g unsalted butter, softened
• 115g caster sugar, plus extra for
sprinkling
• 1 tsp almond extract
• 1 large egg yolk
• 200g plain flour, plus extra for
dusting
• Milk, for sealing and glazing
• 2-3 tbsp good quality lemon
curd
• 2 tbsp flaked almonds
Makes 10
Ready in 40 minutes, plus
chilling and cooling
TIP
Replace the lemon curd with jam,
marmalade or chocolate hazelnut
spread for a change of flavour.
Remember the filling will be very
hot straight out of the oven, so be
sure to leave to cool completely
before tucking in!
1. Place the butter, sugar and almond extract in a
mixing bowl and beat with a hand-held electric
whisk until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolk
then gradually beat in the flour to form a crumbly
dough.
2. Gather the dough with your hands and knead
lightly until smooth. Wrap in cling film and chill in
the fridge for 30 minutes, or until firm.
3. Line a baking sheet with baking paper. Roll the
dough out on a lightly floured surface to 2mm
thick. Using a 7cm round fluted cookie cutter,
stamp out 20 rounds, re-rolling the dough as
necessary. Place on the baking sheets and chill
in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to
190°C, fan 170°C, gas mark 5.
4. Lightly brush around the edge of half the cookie
dough rounds with a little milk. Drop ½ tsp of
lemon curd in the centre of these rounds. Carefully
top with the rest of the cookie dough rounds,
gently pressing to seal the edges.
5. Glaze the tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with
the extra caster sugar and flaked almonds. Bake in
the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until pale
golden. Leave to cool completely on the baking
sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack
and leave to cool completely.
Motoring
Should you buy an
automatic car?
Pros and cons
explained
by James Baggot
Traditionally, British motorists
have favoured manual
gearboxes, but automatics are
becoming increasingly popular.
If you’re thinking of buying an
auto, Tom Wiltshire explains
everything you need to know.
When buying a car, you have
lots of choices to make – colour,
trim level, optional equipment,
engine, and on many models,
you’re also given a choice of
gearbox.
Manuals have long been the
default option for UK motorists,
but automatics are ten a
penny in other markets such as
America. Though early autos
were colloquially known as
‘slush boxes’ and tended to dent
performance, fuel economy and
driving pleasure, times have
moved on, and the modern
automatic can, in some cases, be
a better choice than the manual
gearbox.
Automatics abound across all
market segments these days,
and opting for one says no more
about your driving style than
choosing blue paint over red.
Fans of performance automatics
will brag all day about how
their car can actually beat the
manuals off the line, while
the cash-conscious may enjoy
lower CO2 emissions and higher
fuel economy. There’s no
denying that a good automatic
transmission makes for a relaxing
drive, either – giving your left
leg a rest and letting the car do
the work takes the sting out of a
busy city commute.
However, there are still some
truly awful automatic gearboxes
out there – so always take a car
for an extensive test drive, rather
than simply trusting that the
transmission is good. Automatics
tend to be more expensive to
buy, and much more expensive
to repair if they go wrong.
But not every automatic is
created equal. Here’s our
guide to the different types of
automatic gearbox available
today.
Torque converter/traditional
auto
Popularised by General Motors
on 1940s Oldsmobiles and
Cadillacs, these automatics use
a fluid-filled coupling in place
of a traditional clutch, and
remain broadly the same – albeit
endlessly refined and improved.
Early automatics tended to lose
a lot of energy through the fluid
coupling, and often only offered
three or four speeds. That led
to a lack of performance and a
severe drop in fuel economy.
Torque converter automatics
tend to offer very smooth shifts,
making for a comfortable ride
well-suited to premium cars. They
can be slow to pick up when you
want to get a move on, though.
Nowadays, however, modern
units – such as the ZF ‘box fitted
to dozens of high performance
cars – offer no discernible penalty
to performance or economy.
Dual-clutch gearbox
The dual-clutch gearbox ditches
the fluid coupling of the torque
converter for a pair of robotised
clutches. Usually, one handles
odd-numbered gears while
the other handles even. The
two clutches work together to
provide lightning-fast shifts,
making them ideal for sports
cars.
There’s no real penalty in
performance or economy when
opting for a dual-clutch – some
can even better their manual
counterparts on that front. But
at low speeds in stop-start traffic
around town, dual-clutch boxes
can be jerky and unpleasant to
use – and early units have a poor
reputation for reliability, and can
cost a lot to repair.
The dual-clutch ‘box is given
many names by different
manufacturers. Volkswagen
and its sister brands go for DSG,
Porsche for PDK, Renault goes
for EDC, Hyundai and Kia for
DCT. However, they all work in
fundamentally the same way.
36 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

CVT
Standing for ‘continuously
variable transmission’, CVTs do
not have ‘gears’ in the same
way as other transmissions do.
Instead, an infinitely changeable
single ratio theoretically ensures
that the car is always correctly
geared for maximum power
or economy, depending on
conditions.
Pioneered by DAF in the
1950s, and later refined by
Volvo, the CVT ‘box can be
incredibly economical when
driven carefully. They tend to
be avoided by keen drivers,
though, as they can provide a
somewhat disconnected feel
to the car – and any attempt
at rapid progress is usually
met by spiralling engine revs
and a whole lot of noise. Their
smoothness and variable nature
makes them ideally suited for use
in a hybrid car.
Automated manual transmission
At the bottom end of the market
you’ll often find a few automated
manual transmissions. These
gearboxes leave existing clutch
and gearbox operations in
place but simply robotise the
action, making for cheap and
easy installation as well as being
lightweight.
Automated manuals are
perhaps the most despised
transmission around, and can be
horrifically jerky around town,
as well as dawdling under hard
acceleration. In fact, automated
manual transmissions are guilty
of ruining a fair few cars – so
steer clear unless you know what
you’re in for.
Electric vehicle
Electric cars don’t technically
have a transmission, but if you’re
considering an automatic car
you should take a good look at
electric vehicles. They act almost
identically in most conditions,
with two pedals and no gears to
shift, but have the added bonus
of a totally smooth and silent
powertrain and zero tailpipe
emissions.
EV’s aren’t ideal for everyone, of
course – you’ll need somewhere
to charge, and if you regularly
do longer trips you’ll definitely
need some form of combustion
engine. However, if your
circumstances suit, you could be
a convert to the electric lifestyle.
Roast Salmon
with Tomato & Asparagus Tagliatelle
Serves 4
Ready in 20 minutes
This light summery supper
is on the table in less than
30 minutes – perfect when
you don’t want to spend
hours in the kitchen. If you
prefer, replace the salmon
with pieces of cod loin or
smoked haddock fillets.
• 4 x 175g pieces salmon
fillet
• Salt and freshly ground
black pepper
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 2 tbsp olive oil
• 250g cherry tomatoes
• 2 garlic cloves, peeled
and thinly sliced
• 250g tagliatelle (see
Tip)
• 150g asparagus tips
• 1 tbsp freshly chopped
flat-leaf parsley
• Lemon wedges to
serve
5
TIP
Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6.
Place the salmon on a lightly oiled shallow roasting
tin. Season with salt and freshly ground black
pepper and drizzle over the lemon juice.
Place the cherry tomatoes in a bowl and add half of
the oil and the garlic. Toss gently to coat. Place in
the roasting tin around the salmon. Roast for 12-15
minutes until the salmon is just cooked through and
the tomatoes have softened.
Meanwhile cook the tagliatelle in a pan of lightly
salted boiling water for 8-10 minutes or according
to the packet instructions. Add the asparagus tips
to the pan for the final 3 minutes. Drain well. Return
to the pan.
Add the roast cherry tomatoes and the remaining
olive oil to the tagliatelle and asparagus and toss
together. Season to taste with salt and freshly
ground black pepper.
Divide the pasta between four warmed plates. Top
with the roasted salmon, sprinkle with the chopped
parsley and serve with the lemon wedges.
You can use any long thin pasta for this dish;
spaghetti or linguine would work just as well. If you
use fresh pasta the cooking time will be reduced –
just follow the instructions on the pack.
Health By
Alison Runham www.alison.runham.co.uk
How Safe is Your Suntan?
Magazines may often describe
people as looking ‘healthy and
tanned’, but as the NHS baldly
states, “There’s no safe or
healthy way to get a tan.”
THE PROBLEM WITH
SUNTANS
However light it is, however
slowly you developed it, and
whether you got it in your
back garden, the
Mediterranean or a sunbed,
a tan proves your skin has
received too much radiation.
Around 5% of the UV
(ultraviolet) radiation from
sunlight is UVB, responsible
for sunburn. The other 95% is
UVA, responsible for tanning,
aging and wrinkling the skin.
UVA rays penetrate to the
lower epidermis, stimulating
melanin production.
This brown pigment, which
provides your tan, is the skin’s
defence mechanism.
Your skin has good reason to
go into defence mode. While
symptoms of skin damage
can take 20 years to appear,
prolonged UV exposure
increases your risk of skin
cancer, including its most
serious form, malignant
melanoma. People frequently
exposed to UV rays before
25 years old or who suffered
sunburn in childhood have a
greatly increased risk of skin
cancer later in life.
THE PROBLEM WITH
SUNBEDS
Sunbeds, sunlamps and
tanning booths emit the same
harmful UV radiation as the
sun, but many give out greater
UV doses than the midday
tropical sun. You’re also
relying on manufacturers and
operators to ensure you get a
‘safe’ dose.
The Scientific Committee on
Consumer Products states
the ultraviolet radiation from
sunbeds shouldn’t exceed
11 standard erythema doses
per hour. That’s equivalent to
tropical sun exposure and
‘extreme’, according to the
World Health Organization,
which classifies sunbeds as a
Group 1 Carcinogen.
Your risk depends on your skin
type, the frequency and length
of your sunbed sessions and
your age. In the UK, it’s illegal
for under-18s to use sunbeds.
A review by the International
Agency for Research on
Cancer found that first
exposure to sunbeds before
35 years old increases
melanoma risk by 75%.
STAY SAFE
The Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) recommends
you shouldn’t use UV tanning
equipment if you have:
• fair, sensitive skin that burns
easily or tans poorly
• badly sun-damaged skin or
a history of sunburn,
particularly in childhood
• many moles, or many
freckles and red hair
• medicines or creams that
make your skin lightsensitive
• a medical condition
aggravated by sunlight, such
as vitiligo
• a personal or family history
of skin cancer
You should also be cautious if
you’re pregnant, as your skin
may be more sensitive and
prone to burning and
pigmentation (patches of
dark skin).
Avoid the sun when it’s
strongest (11am -3pm).
Never allow yourself to burn.
Cover your skin, wear a hat
and wear sunglasses with
adequate UVA and UVB
protection.
UV can damage eyes too,
causing conjunctivitis,
irritation or even cataracts.
Use sunscreen that’s in date,
with at least four-star UVA
protection and an SPF of at
least 15 (30 or higher if you’re
fair-skinned or using it on children).
Technology
2
OUT AND ABOUT
Tech tools for wherever you may roam
Whether it’s a long walk or an epic adventure,
technology can make travelling much easier. It’s
amazing how much can be crammed into a small
space: for example the Clippa Lady Mini Multi-Tool
Hair Clip (£8) combines a bottle opener, scraper,
ruler, small screwdriver and a nail file in a simple pink
hair clip.
If you fancy something that’s more practical than
pretty, the evergreen Leatherman multi-tool and
its many imitators crams an astonishing number
of tools into something barely larger than a pair
of pliers, and while you can’t generally fly with
them in your carry-on luggage – many multi-tools
have various cutting bits that make them potential
weapons – they’re very useful things to pack, or
to have on a hike or in a caravan. It pays to shop
around, though: the top Leatherman models can
be ruinously expensive but they’re often heavily
discounted, so for example the £149.95 Wave is
currently available from several retailers for nearer
£100. Much cheaper options are available too.
Wearable technology is becoming a big deal in the
great outdoors too. Apple’s Series 3 Apple Watch
has built-in GPS and is available with its own 4G data
connection, albeit only on EE, which enables you to
track your route and get directions without having
to take your phone out or even bring it with you.
And there are now tons of focused GPS watches for
sports and for hiking, such as TomTom’s Adventurer
GPS watch (£199) or if you’re feeling really flush,
Garmin’s Fenix 5 Multisports (£439). Where Apple’s
device is a smartwatch that can do GPS, rival devices
were designed with GPS as their main priority and
are often better bets for serious sports people.
TomTom and Garmin are the big names in this
market but there are plenty of cheaper options from
less established firms too.
If you’ll be travelling for a while and think your
phone battery won’t last, there are several options
for topping up its charge. Some phones enable you
to swap the batteries (although the most expensive
phones, such as iPhones and the latest
Android flagships, don’t), but most big
name devices can accept power pack
cases that combine a protective case
and extra battery in one item. That
means much more life between
charges, but it does add quite a
lot of bulk and weight. Expect to
pay around £60 for an established
brand such as Mophie’s Juice Pack
for the iPhone, and steer clear of
no-name products on eBay – dodgy
batteries can go on fire with horrific
consequences, so it’s wise to stick
to recognised brands from reputable
sellers.
3
Another option is a portable charger. Solar ones
aren’t much cop in the UK except on the sunniest
days, but pre-charged devices such as Aukey’s
excellent Power Bank can be used to charge tablets,
phones, handheld games consoles and other
small items such as Kindles. Again, they’re often
discounted and £20 is the sweet spot for a decent
one. You can expect to get more than four full
charges for a smartphone or one and a half for a big
tablet.
Quirky Britain
Dwile Flonking
with the Devil
and his Tailors
Why Britain’s traditional pub
games may be poised to make
a comeback
“The British pub is unique,
rooted in our island’s history
dating from Roman and Saxon
times.” So says Good Beer
Guide editor Roger Protz, in
an interview published in The
Guardian newspaper. He adds:
“There is no better place for
people to meet, enjoy a beer,
strike up a conversation, make
new friends and put the world
to rights.”
Britain’s public houses may
have a great heritage, but
the past twenty years have
been exceptionally tough for
pub landlords. Supermarkets
selling cheap alcohol have
dented profits, while the Great
Recession of 2008, the public
smoking ban and higher taxes
on alcohol have combined to
create a perfect storm that – at
its peak – saw 52 establishments
closing every week.
Now communities are fighting
back, rallying together to keep
local pubs open and find new
ways of bringing customers
through the door. Traditional
pub games offer a simple way
to bring people together over
a pint, and given that many
landlords are now looking for
low-cost, low maintenance
ways to keep their ‘regulars’
happy, some of Britain’s oldest
games may be about to make
a comeback. Here’s a selection
that are still played in town and
country pubs across Britain:
Devil Among the Tailors
This old pub game is a form of
table or bar skittles, where nine
skittles are arranged in a square,
open-topped wooden box
usually placed on a table top.
A vertical pole rises from one
corner of the box from which a
small, wooden ball (about the
size of a golf ball) is suspended
from a chain or string. The aim
is to swing the ball in an arc to
catch the skittles, rather than
aiming directly at them.
And the name? Legend has it
that in 1805 the game of bar
skittles was renamed as ‘Devil
Among the Tailors’ when
tailors rioted following the
performance of a stage play
that cruelly satirised their craft.
When the cavalry was called to
break up the riots, the army’s
horsemen were said to have
cleared the streets as effectively
as a ball ploughing through
skittles.
Dwile Flonking
Honestly, you couldn’t make
it up. Dwile Flonking is a game
in which two teams of twelve
players take turns to hold hands
by Kate McLelland
and dance in a circle, at the
same time trying to avoid being
hit by a beer-soaked cloth (the
‘dwile’ in question) wielded by
an opposing team member in
the middle. Losers get to drink
a chamber pot filled with ale, in
double-quick time.
Go online and treat yourself
to the 1967 British Pathé film
on YouTube, which shows a
Monty-Pythonish group of
Dwile Flonkers practising in East
Anglia’s Waveney Valley, where
the game is still played today.
Dwile Flonking apparently has
its origins in an ancient harvest
ritual. The word ‘dwile’ is a
knitted floor cloth while ‘flonk’
is probably a corruption of
‘flong’ (used in olden days as the
past tense for ‘fling’).
Toad in the Hole
No, it’s not a hearty helping of
sausage and batter served up by
the pub landlord. This is a game
where contestants toss brass
coins onto a lead-topped table
with a hole in the middle. The
game is mainly played in Sussex
pubs, with activities centred
around the town of Lewes,
home of the Toad in the Hole
international championships.
60 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!

It’s a simple game but one that
requires a certain amount of
skill. Players try to land their
coins (known as ‘toads’) either
on the flat surface of the table
or in the hole, scoring one or
two points respectively. If your
‘toad’ hits the back of the table
or falls off, it is void.
The game is a variant of ‘Pitchpenny’
(or ‘Chuck Farthing’),
which dates back to the 18th
century or possibly even earlier.
Ringing the Bull
Originating in the 12th century,
this is one of the oldest games
still played in Britain’s pubs.
The idea is to throw a metal
ring (hung from the ceiling on a
rope) onto a metal hook on the
wall. The hook is a replacement
for the original target – a bull’s
horn – which gave the game its
name.
The game of Ringing the Bull
was reputedly brought to Britain
in medieval times by pilgrims
returning from Jerusalem. The
story is given some weight by
the fact that the most famous
pub to host the game is a
Nottingham hostelry called
“Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem”.
The pub – tucked into the cliffs
beneath Nottingham Castle –
claims to be “the oldest inn in
England”.
These traditional pub games
have an innocent charm that
provides a welcome
relief from the beeping,
flashing, coin-munching
fruit machines that
have become such
a familiar sight in
Britain’s drinking
establishments. They
will also be welcomed
by the growing number
of people – both young
and old – who believe
that society’s current obsession
with personal technology
gadgets has gone too far.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if we
entered a pub in ten years’
time and – instead of finding
customers hunched over their
smartphones and laptops – we
discovered a group of players
happily engaged in a game of
Devil Among the Tailors?
Keeping your dog safe in
the water this summer
Swimming is a fun activity for
your dog, and one which can be
extremely beneficial for their
overall health. In the heat of
summer, however, it comes into
its own by cooling them down
and helping them to avoid the
risk of heat stroke to which dogs
are prone.
So what should you do to make
sure they’re safe in the water,
and that swimming is fun rather
than frightening?
• Stay in the shallows at first
Letting your dog play in
shallow waters helps them to
acclimatise and gain confidence
if they’re relatively new to
swimming.
• Be aware of undercurrents
It’s easy for your dog to
be swept out further than
you’d like if there are tidal
undercurrents on your stretch
of beach. Fast-flowing rivers
and streams also pose a danger
in this respect, even if your
dog’s a strong swimmer.
• Provide fresh water to drink
Drinking lake or river water can
result in an upset stomach due
to the bacteria and parasites
that are often present, so it’s a
good idea to take some fresh
drinking water with you.
PETS
• Don’t let them get too tired
Swimming is tiring for your
dog, so watch out for signs
that they’re flagging. They may
start to panic and flounder in
the water, especially if they’re
novice swimmers. It’s possible
to buy life jackets for dogs,
which give them confidence
in the water if they’re a little
unsure.
In an English Country Garden
I have relatives currently visiting from
Australia. Having never visited the UK before
there was a degree of pressure to show the
country at its best (we have a reputation to
maintain...!)
Since they wanted to see a castle I settled
on Hever which proved a very good choice,
not least because I hadn’t been for years and
had forgotten just how beautiful the gardens
there are.
My mother particularly enjoyed the array of
plants - the roses being in their first bloom
and particularly fragrant. However as we
came to a neat lawn she jubilantly points to a
clump of [insert name of plant you don’t want
in your lawn here - my botanical knowledge
is not the strongest] and commented with
delight that she was glad even they had a
few weeds in their lawn and it made her feel
better about her own!
It made me laugh but it reminded me that it’s
often an attitude we have when we see
things in other people’s lives which reflect
things in our own. Relief we are not alone.
It’s easy to take comfort in other people’s
flaws however we can sometime ignore the
fact that our lives can easily become a jungle
of unhealthy attitudes, nursed grievances,
destructive behaviour and selfishness. Whilst
we may do our best to keep these weeds at
bay they continue to spring up in our
relationships and friendships, at work and at
home.
The Bible describes this as 'sin'. This sin both
damages us and those we love and separates
us from God. The good news is that at
the cross Jesus dealt with the problem of sin;
enabling us to be free from its grasp and to
be friends of God. Whilst this does not make
Christians perfect (as you will know if you
have met one!) His Holy Spirit is at work in
those who trust in Jesus, making them more
like Him. Following Jesus is not about pulling
up the weeds ourselves to make us more
respectable; it is about allowing Jesus to work
in us; changing and restoring us and giving
us the sure hope of eternal relationship with
God.
I do hope you can enjoy your garden if you
have one and all the benefits of the longer
evenings and sunnier days!
Get your creative learning juices flowing this summer
Whether you are a doctor, a pilot, an office
worker, a banker, a vet, a beautician, a stay
at home parent, or retired, you will need the
skills to use Microsoft Office
Bite Size lessons can be accessed via your
PC, Laptop, Tablet or phone with internet
connection, giving you the opportunity to
learn : Any Time, Any Place, Any Where!
Microsoft Office touches everbody’s lives
in some way - whether it be entering
information into a spreadsheet, sending
emails, making appointments in your
Outlook calendar or sending a letter.
You may want to keep your household
finances in order with a handy spreadsheet
that will auto-calculate for you, or send a
professional looking letter to your insurance
company as examples.
Either way, you will need to have the basic
skills to carry out these tasks in a quick and
easy fashion.
The technical world is fast paced and
changing everyday; we do things very
differently today compared to 10 years ago;
paper documents will soon be a thing of the
past.
Many are accessing not only their banking
online, but also managing household bills,
shopping online and communicating via email.
No doubt you are happy to spend money on a
nice fresh coffee, or treat yourself to a haircut,
so why not invest in your own skills?
Bite Size Ltd are Microsoft Office Specialists
and have designed and written a huge
catalogue of lessons that can be accessed
via an online subscription.
Each lesson takes just a few minutes to
complete and has a handy video tutorial for
you to watch. You simply pick and choose
the lessons you wish to learn - we all have
different skill gaps , and don’t want to sit
through a whole course that may be
unnecessary for our needs.
If you are not sure of your own skill level,
Gardening
Essential Scent by Pippa Greenwood
A garden without perfume is, well,
like apple pie without the cream!
However good your flower beds
and borders may look, however
well-clad with climbers your walls
and fences are, if there are no
wonderful scents and perfumes
your garden will be missing a vital
ingredient. That’s not to say you
have to sacrifice the colour and
texture when you use perfumed
plants. Far from it – many heavilyscented
flowers are also really
good-looking. So what is perfume
all about and how do you make the
most of it?
Perfume plays a role in plant
evolution and their success; in
many cases it is there to attract
attention to the flower and to
entice a suitable pollinator. Once
lured over by the perfume, the
insect can enjoy the nectar the
flower offers and pollinate it in the
process, so increasing the chances
of it producing a new generation.
There are a good number of
plants which produce an alluring
perfume during the evening or
night-time. At this time of day
there are not likely to be bees or
butterflies about but there will
be moths, especially during the
summer months. Moths can be
useful pollinators and although a
plant like the sweetly-perfumed
night-scented stock may not have
flamboyant flowers, it will be
successfully pollinated.
For most of us, the stronger the
perfume the better.
But weather conditions can
alter the level of perfume
that reaches your nose.
In a wind-swept spot
the perfume can literally
be blown away, and if
temperatures are unusually
low this too can cause scent
levels to drop. So bear this in
mind when choosing where
to put your perfumed plants.
Smaller or more subtly-scented
plants grown for their perfume
can pass unnoticed if sited too far
away from where you can enjoy
them. The classic examples are
some of the polyanthus or the
miniature iris, whose perfume will
easily pass you by if they are grown
in a far-flung border. Plant smaller
perfumed plants in raised areas
or perhaps in pots so that you can
enjoy all they have to offer!
If you’ve space for a small pergola,
it has the potential to make a
great home for some perfumed
climbers, and what could be
lovelier than to wander from one
part of the garden to another via
a tunnel of perfume? There are
many perfumed roses which make
great pergola plants and have
flexible stems, such as the repeat
flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’
(red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky
pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’
(brightest pink).
Make sure that the air coming into
your house via windows left ajar
is delicately fragrant. Pop smaller
perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia
Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into
window boxes or wall baskets, and
enjoy their wonderful perfume as
it wafts into bedrooms, bathrooms
and sitting rooms.
If you enjoy sitting out on your
patio or in your back yard after
sundown then, as well as having
daytime perfume, be sure to
80 Log into www.cr5.co.uk your local community website!
include some flowers that will be
at their best in the evening. For
a warm summer’s evening the
small creamy-white flowers of
night-scented stock take some
beating, or if you want something
a little showier then try the nightperfumed
nicotianas or tobacco
plants such as Nicotiana sylvestris.
Make sure that patio pots and
other containers have their fair
share of perfumed plants – vibrant
colours can be provided by most
bedding plants, but try to include
a few scented stunners as well.
How about some hyacinths or one
of my favourites, the Heliotrope or
cherry pie, with its flowers in white
or shades of purple and whose
densely packed flower heads will
produce perfume throughout the
summer?
Wall shrubs are a perfect way to
disguise a less-than-attractive
house or garage wall. For a sunny
spot the blue-flowered Ceaonothus
produces a distinctly honeyperfumed
scent, or go more exotic
and plant up a wall on a welldrained
soil with the pineapple
broom Cytissus batanderei – with
its lovely silvery-coloured foliage
and bright yellow flowers it looks
sensational, but once you sniff
those pineapple-scented blooms
you’ll be hooked.
Create an arbour from a readilyavailable
kit or from scratch if
you’re handy with a saw, then
clothe it in perfumed climbers
such as sweetly-scented roses or,
if the arbour is in a shadier spot,
why not use the spicily-scented
honeysuckle? You’ll be in heaven
sitting on the arbour’s seat in the
shade of the plants with their
flowers’ scents all around!
All’s Fair…
…in June and July. For now is the season
of the Summer Fair. From the Old Coulsdon
Village Fair in Grange Park, to sundry school
fairs at Keston Primary, Chipstead Valley,
Woodcote Primary, Woodcote High and more,
stalls are being planned, erected and manned
by volunteers, trying their very best to find
new and exciting (or tried and tested) ways to
get you to part with money for their various
causes. Bouncy castles are being inflated,
cakes baked, jams and preserves cooked and
bottled, cards made, tombola prizes and brica-brac
gathered. Local businesses are
pestered to provide prizes for raffles. It’s a
lot of hard work. Preparation for each event
starts months before.
And although I’m sure there are exceptions,
in my experience, it’s usually down to a small
hard core group of people who both care and
‘can do’ that get the job done.
It would be easier if there were an army of
helpers for each event, a wider distribution
of responsibilities, a better sharing of the
various burdens. Schools with hundreds of
children and therefore hundreds of parents
should have PTAs bursting at the seams with
volunteers at every new intake in September.
But it doesn’t happen.
Secondary schools suffer more than Primary
ones in this. The absence of the playground
drop off and pick-up, so much a part of
Primary school life, creates a distance
between the parent and the school which is
difficult to overcome. Even with that
advantage, some primary school PTAs
struggle to get people to help. Sadly, many
parents, both of primary and secondary
school age children, seem to have fallen into
the mind-set that school is just somewhere
to dump the kids for the day so they can get
on with other important things. Now, we
all have busy lives, and despite (or possibly
even because of) all the new technology that
surrounds us we seem to have less time than
ever to spend on the things that should be a
priority. Let’s be honest, if you’ve had a child,
shouldn’t their well-being, their education,
their futures, be really, really important to
you? (I have to say that if it isn’t, then why did
you have the child in the first place?)
Schools today are really up against it.
Consecutive Education secretaries with no
background in teaching but each determined
to make their mark have meddled with
curriculums, examinations and anything else
they can get hold of, confusing everyone.
There’s more work for teachers to cope with
outside the classroom than ever before.
And all the while, spending on education has
dropped significantly in real terms. As a result,
there are fewer GCSE courses available now
than there were 10 years ago. So much less
choice for your child. Text books and
revision guides can no longer be afforded.
Vital building work is left undone through lack
of money.
The schools continue to do their best. But
they are teachers, being thrust without
preparation or training into running schools as
businesses, which is what is required of them
these days. These are not, on the whole,
businessmen or women. They entered a
profession to do something special. Teach
children. Not balance books, maximise the
revenue stream from the school hall or
resolve recruitment issues.
So PTAs are there to work hand in hand with
the school to help. Provide skills that the
teaching staff don’t have. Help create a sense
of community. And at the present, most
importantly, raise money.
So, please, find out more about your child’s
school PTA. Volunteer to help at events. It
doesn’t have to be a massive commitment,
whatever time you can spare will be
appreciated. But if even that is too much, then
please support your local schools by going to
the fairs. Buy the homemade jam or candle,
enter the raffle, have a face painted.
You’ll enjoy yourself. And your money can’t go
to a better cause.
Can’t Stop The Rain
“Rain down, you heavens, from above, And
let the skies pour down righteousness; Let the
earth open, let them bring forth salvation, And
let righteousness spring up together. I, the
Lord, have created it.” Isaiah 45:8 (NKJV)
Rain everywhere: rain cascading down roof
tops, rain staccato-beating on glass windows,
rain pressing down on tightly-held
umbrellas, rain filling up the fast-flowing rivers
and streams, rain trickling down wet noses
and dropping off their ends like leaky taps.
Have you ever tried to stop the rain?
Not surprisingly, here in the UK we’ve had a
lot of rain in recent months. At times the rain
has seemed torrential and unstoppable.
In the bible, the prophet Isaiah uses the
relentless quality of rain as a metaphor to
describe the certainty of God’s promises of
righteousness and salvation. The context is a
prophecy about the Persian King Cyrus, who
will deliver the captive Jews from their
Babylonian oppression. Cyrus is a type of
Jesus Christ who saves us now and who will
return to rescue the whole world and
all of history from the captivity of evil.
Not only will saving righteousness rain down,
says Isaiah, but it will also spring up like wells
of water from the ground. There’ll be no
escaping it. God’s goodness will permeate
every aspect of being.
So perhaps next time we’re walking in the
rain, maybe feeling damp, cold and miserable,
we can think of the showers of God’s
blessings that lie ahead of us, not just for us
but for the whole of creation.
Prayer: Thank you, Father, for the promise of
deliverance and that ultimately your righteousness
will pour down upon our suffering
earth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Lynda's "Appleby stare" won a Selector's
award in 2017 Royal Photographic Society
DIGIT group. "Appleby Horse fair is held
annually in Appleby, Westmoreland. I went
last year, combining it with a few days in the
Lake District. The Fair is a vast meeting place
for travellers and country people. The main
purpose is to buy and sell horses. The horses
are raced bareback or ridden pulling a buggy
along the adjacent road at breakneck speeds,
all part of showing off the horse's abilities and
fun for the young men. You really have to be
careful crossing the road.
This horse was tethered in the field at the
back of the fair. The wind was whipping up
its mane and it turned to stare and I took the
photo. I used a 'film noir' effect for a grainy
dramatic look.
Belonging to a Camera Club has honed my
photographic skills. I would recommend it to
anyone who wants to take better photos."
Bird’s Eye View - July
By John Birkett, RSPB Croydon Local Group
2018 appears to have been a very strange year
for breeding birds. The weather, including the
‘Beast from the East’, could well be
responsible for some species delaying their
breeding efforts. We will have to wait for
the final evidence, but Blue and Great Tits do
seem to be later in producing young.
Hopefully by now you will have seen family
parties feeding in your gardens with the
youngsters looking like washed out versions
of their parents.
In some instances our summer visitors such
as Swifts and House Martins have been late
returning to their breeding grounds, perhaps
as a result of adverse weather conditions
further south on their migration routes.
Young Swifts should be on the wing by
mid-July you may be lucky enough to see
large flocks flying around near your home as
they gather together ready to migrate back
to Africa for our winter. This will be their first
time on the wing and they may remain flying
for the whole of the next two years until they
set up a nest of their own to breed.
During the whole of that period they will feed
and sleep on the wing!
And on the subject of breeding, there have
been increasing numbers of Buzzards and
Red Kites seen in Croydon in recent years. It
is surely only a matter of time before we can
prove that they have bred successfully in the
borough.
You can find out more about the RSPB Croydon
Local Group by coming along to one of
our meetings or going to the website:
in Croydon have a look at the Croydon Birders
More next time, but keep your eyes and ears
open and let us know what you see in July.
