Join this open studio style class where all<br />

learning levels work side-by-side. Beginning<br />

students will complete instructor-led<br />

exercises as an introduction to painting,<br />

with an emphasis on understanding<br />

materials and color. Intermediate and<br />

advanced students receive individual<br />

instruction in the area of their choice. You<br />

should be prepared to work independently<br />

with support from peers and the instructor.<br />

class offers greater productivity through<br />

individual instruction. You’ll be encouraged<br />

to develop an artistic vocabulary and a<br />

personal style, anything from abstraction<br />

to non-objective super-realism. Tuition<br />

Kirchner, Max Ernst and other strikingly<br />

unusual painters from the past as well<br />

as some from the present. Using oil and/<br />

or acrylic paint, you will use different<br />

approaches to mark making, color,<br />

composition, and alternative materials to<br />

make your paintings just as unique as your<br />

prompts and experimental exercises.<br />

Work independently throughout class and<br />

participate in group critiques and group<br />

discussions. You will explore ways to paint<br />

landscapes, buildings, and figures by utilizing<br />

reference photos, and by looking to artists<br />

Andrew Wyeth, Hopper and Homer. Weather<br />

permitting, we’ll venture outdoors and recreate<br />

Mellon Park scenes “en plein air.” Tuition<br />

includes one session with a model. Supply list<br />

This class focuses on painting the human head.<br />

Students will learn how to mix skin tones, sight<br />

facial features, learn facial anatomy and facial<br />

expressions, and how to make a conceptual<br />

portrait. Students will have a short lecture<br />

before starting their assignment. They will also<br />

work from a real life model.<br />

Take time to appreciate the natural flow<br />

of paint. Learn how to use a paint pour to<br />

create a finished piece, or lay an exciting<br />

foundation for something new. Explore<br />

different grounds, tools, acrylic mediums,<br />

and techniques that will help you create a<br />

perfect swirl of color on your canvas. Supply<br />

list provided.<br />

Color Theory<br />

with Heather Heitzenrater<br />

Students will learn the properties of color,<br />

and how to mix paints effectively. Students<br />

will make color charts, do mixing exercises,<br />

and do color study still lives to explore color<br />

relationships.<br />

Painting Concepts<br />

with Crystal Latimer<br />

8 Tuesdays Mar 13 - May 1 6:30pm - 9:30pm<br />

$235 members / $260 non-members<br />

Expand your painting horizons by utilizing<br />

spray paint, metallic gilding, and other<br />

materials to experiment with surface and<br />

solvency. Incorporate printmaking, collage,<br />

and various mark-making methods to build<br />

layers and create richness within your<br />

artwork. Work along Crystal Latimer, who<br />

will share insight into her artistic process<br />

and that of other contemporary artists.<br />
