<strong>Digital</strong> glass cockpit systems have become an effective means for defense authorities to enhance the capabilities of their<br />

aircraft. The digital glass cockpit system reduces the aircraft weight and information management workload, enables power<br />

saving and allow easier interaction with the air traffic control (ATC), avoids accidents, and result in faster training for new<br />

The digital glass cockpit display systems comprise multi-function displays (MFDs), engine indications and crew alerting<br />

system (EICAS), and primary flight displays (PFDs) that enable replacement of clusters of mechanical flight instrument<br />

gauges with the graphical representations of information from on-board/external sensors and navigation systems.<br />

Modern digital glass cockpit systems use liquid crystal display (LCD) screens to display critical flight information, replacing<br />

the older, obsolete, and bulkier cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. They are known by a variety of acronyms, such as<br />

electronic flight information systems (EFIS) and cockpit display system (CDS).<br />

Of late, the aircraft operations have become very dependent on the digital glass cockpit systems. Therefore, it becomes<br />

mandatory that the flight crew and pilots are properly trained to deal with any possible failures. For example, in 2008,<br />

United Airlines Flight 731 experienced a glass-cockpit blackout and thereby it loses all of its attitude indicators, radios,<br />

traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS), transponders, and half of the electronic centralized aircraft monitor (ECAM)<br />

displays. However, due to the presence of backup analog displays for critical flight instruments such as the airspeed<br />

indicator and altimeter, the pilots were able to land the aircraft successfully at Newark Airport without radio contact. With<br />

the facilitation of global positioning system (GPS) in aircraft, the pilot workload is significantly reduced with increased<br />

situational awareness, and safety.<br />
