Sports reporter Jacob Page discovers what motivates those involved to keep the people of Selwyn active and involved in sport THE SELWYN Sports Trust was born out of a passion to get people active and involved in sport and physical activity for life. It’s more than just about producing All Blacks, Black Caps or Olympians – it’s about giving Mike Wilson people the opportunity to try a sport and then make it a part of their life in the Selwyn district. Chief executive of the charitable trust, Mike Wilson, Emma Wilson and his wife Jade Croskery, 10, of Clearview Primary School, makes a break with the ball during a game of Ki O’Rahi at Brookside Park PHOTOS: MARTIN HUNTER Emma noticed there wasn’t much happening to get people active in their area after the earthquakes. “In late 2011, my wife decided as a young business owner in Leeston there was a lack of activities in the area so she started a Wednesday night running group, along with Michael Lay and his family, called the Ellesmere Roadrunners,” Mr Wilson said. “We had over 90 people one night and that made us think that we may have needed an annual event and that’s when the Selwyn Running Festival came about.” The festival is held in November each year and continues to grow in numbers. By the end of 2012, the group – which was a hobby at that point – had started to eat into Mr and Mrs Wilson’s professional lives. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at Wednesday June 27 2018 7 kid a chance it’s our “The trust was a logical step by that point and we decided there was clearly a need for more events and more to do in the Selwyn area,” Mr Wilson said. Mr and Mrs Wilson and Mr Lay are all still on the trust’s board, along with former New Zealand cricketer John Reid, who has been instrumental in several community projects in the Selwyn area, and rural bank manager Cameron Blain. “When we were formed, we sat around and thought why does this have to stop at a running club and one running event?” Mr Wilson felt Selwyn was easily ignored in terms of sport at the time. His role as chief executive has increased from one day a week to a full-time way of life. “One day became two and then three and, all of a sudden, I didn’t need the casual teaching jobs. “Each time I reached capacity came with me increasing my hours.” As a charitable trust, funding comes from a wide range of sources, including the Rata Foundation, district council, NZCT, Kiwisport Partnership Fund through Sport Canterbury, invested schools in the activator programme, event revenue and other gaming trusts. Funding ids used to build up and restore equipment. The trust runs activities suited to the district like the Koru Games, which sees 2000 students from around the South Island Andre Crown, of Burnham School, scores a try during a game of Ki O’Rahi at Brookside Park compete every year. “Koru Games is great for kids in year 7 and 8 because it limits the cost of kids at that age going to tournaments,” Mr Wilson said. “It’s about individual skill development within a team environment. We’re also trying to encourage that tournament sport trips aren’t just about the sport; they’re about the volunteers, officials, coaching and having fun with your friends.” WIN BE IN TO a $500 Cof ee Machine Combo 1 per store to be won See instore for details Recognising success in our community Win two tickets to the Gala Dinner!
