ATTENTION! PET POOPS / YOU SCOOP
Please be respectful of community grounds and neighbors’ yards. If your
pet poops during your walk, be prepared to scoop and trash. Come with
a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. It may not be the
most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show your respect for
every homeowner and our beautiful community.
PLEASE NOTE - PETS ON LEASHES
It is the law in Fort Bend County that all pets must be vaccinated for rabies, registered
and restrained. All animals, when outside of an owner’s means of restraint (i.e., in
a fenced back yard), must be on a leash. For the safety of all residents, please
use all precautions with your pets and keep them on leashes when walking
pets in the community EVEN IF YOU FEEL YOUR PET IS HARMLESS. If you see
ANY animal roaming freely in the neighborhood, immediately call Animal Control
at 281-342-1512. Even if you recognize the animal, be very careful approaching it,
as you do not know how it will react; if you can safely retrieve the animal, then call
the owner. Otherwise, Animal Control is your best and safest option.
FORT BEND COUNTY “LEASH LAW”
Animal control authorities are permitted to enter your Property to patrol and
remove pets. Pets must be registered, licensed and inoculated as required by law.
As a dog owner, you are responsible for the control of your dog. If your dog is
one that ‘makes objectionable noise,’ you must make every effort to respect
your Neighbor’s right to their ‘peace and quiet.’
When your dog is not in your yard, it is imperative that you keep your dog on a leash
at all times. While your dog is friendly to you and your family, imagine the consequences
if it were to harm someone while it was ‘roaming free.’
Please respect other resident’s right to walk the common area ground without
fear of attack from an unleashed dog.
Laws are written to ensure that owned animals are confined to their property
or kept on a leash to free a community of unrestrained and free-roaming
animals. Although most dog bites occur on the property where the dog lives,
unrestrained or free-roaming dogs do pose a substantial threat to the public.
In addition, unrestrained animals are at increased risk of being bitten by rabies
infected wildlife. Enforcement of restraint laws is essential in enhancing the
animal control program’s efforts to reduce the risk of rabies in our community.
LICENSING OF DOGS AND CATS
The primary benefit of licensing animals is identification, should that animal
become lost. Licensing also:
• Ensures that rabies vaccination are current.
• Allows for quick identification in case of a bite incident.
• Provides revenue to offset the administration costs of the
animal control program.
VACCINATION
Rabies vaccinations are a prerequisite for licensing dogs and cats because
they are an important control measure for the public health threat of rabies.
In addition to protecting pets, rabies vaccinations provide a barrier between
infected wild animals and humans.
HOW TO TALK TO YOUR CHILDREN
WHEN TRAGEDY STRIKES
In my role as executive director at Shield-Bearer Counseling Centers,
I am frequently asked by parents or teachers how to help children when
they or their community experiences a tragedy.
Every child reacts differently to loss. Younger children handle the
news differently than older children. A child’s personality and values
influence their reaction. Parents and teachers may notice children
displaying a greater amount of energy following a tragedy. Energy
released by their body’s natural response when safety is threatened
will find its way into more irritability, fidgeting and inability to focus
on tasks at hand.
But there are some things individuals who are raising or working with
children can do.
Model calmness.
Children will look to parents and other adults to cue their interpretation
and reaction to the tragedy. When children see the adults around them
remaining calm, they will be more easily reassured of their own safety.
Help them talk.
Parents frequently have difficulty discussing such horrible tragedies
with their children. As with other times of loss, they do not know exactly
what to say. Being available to listen to what children want to say
will likely be more helpful than putting together a lecture. Encourage
children to express how they feel when they are ready to discuss it.
Honestly answer questions.
When children do not know the answers, they will ask questions. Parents
who patiently attempt to answer tough questions will see their
children move through the pain of the tragic event. If you don’t know
the answers, tell them so. Reassuring them of their present safety will
help them learn to overcome fears that they might be struggling with.
Limit access to tragedy news.
Monitoring your children’s access to news reports of the tragedy will help
reduce the possibility of nightmares. When a child watches news programs
about a tragedy, parents should be present to discuss the contents of reports.
Keep them busy.
One of the most important things that a parent can do to help their
children work through a tragedy is to maintain the routine and structure
of their children’s lives. Keep appointments. Carry on with chores and
responsibilities. Meet obligations.
Help them help.
Every person touched by a tragedy is motivated to help in some way.
The negative emotions of fear, sorrow and anger can be channeled into
acts of kindness. Having a child gather items for tragedy victims, write
a thank-you note to the first responders or draw a picture for someone
intimately involved will help them feel they are making a difference.
These actions can help them regain a sense of control over their situation.
Remember that each child is an individual. What helps one child might
not help another. If there are significant changes in behavior, mood or
sleeping patterns, it is important to make a visit to a physician or professional
counselor to assess what professional help might be available.
Above all else, let them know they are loved.
Centers, a 501c3 nonprofit charity with offices in NW Houston, Tomball,
INDEPENDENCE DAY 2018
Significance of Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018, also known as Fourth of July, is a federal
holiday observed yearly on July fourth. It is the anniversary of the
publication of the declaration of independence of the United States
of America from Great Britain in 1776.
History of Independence Day
The history of Independence Day 2018 dates back to the 18 th century
and the American Revolution (1775-83). In June 1776, representatives
of the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary struggle
weighed a resolution that would declare independence of the
United States from Great Britain. On July 2 nd , the legal separation
of the Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred, when the
Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of
independence that had been proposed by Richard Henry Lee of
Virginia. Two days later its delegates adopted the Declaration of
Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson,
John Adams and Benjamin Franklin.
Historians have long disputed whether Congress actually signed the
Declaration of Independence on July 4 th and most have concluded
that the Declaration was signed nearly a month after its adoption,
on August 2, 1776 and not on July 4 th as it is commonly believed.
The holiday remains to be celebrated on the fourth of July. Coincidentally,
both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, the only signers
of the Declaration of Independence later to serve as Presidents of
the United States, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was
the 50 th anniversary of the Declaration.
10 FIREWORKS SAFETY TIPS
While you are enjoying your grilling, family time and fireworks, take
time to remind your kids what this holiday is about. The lighting and
display of fireworks came with a price to many men and women sacrificing
for their kids and future generations. Use the fireworks display
as a teaching tool; share with them the lyrics of the star spangled
banner and, most of all, remain safe if your family tradition includes
lighting fireworks. Below are 10 fireworks safety tips you should use
and teach to your kids.
• Fireworks packaged in brown paper are made for professional
displays - avoid buying.
• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities, especially
with sparklers.
• Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire
and to douse used fireworks before discarding in trash.
• Never allow young children to play or ignite fireworks.
• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal
or glass containers.
• Never try to re-light or pickup fireworks that have not ignited fully.
• Never place a part of your body directly over a firework device
when lighting.
• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
Traditions of Independence Day
Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and
barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American
tradition of political freedom and patriotism. Many people display
the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Additionally,
Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic
songs such as the national anthem and, in capable military bases, a
salute of one gun for each state in the United States, called a “salute
to the union,” is fired on Independence Day at noon.
When is Independence Day 2018
Independence Day 2018 is a federal holiday and falls on the fourth
of July. The day of the week that the holiday falls on, changes each
year. This year, July 4 th falls on a Wednesday.
HEAT AWARENESS & SAFETY
One of the most significant health risks to be aware of this summer is the
heat, which you may not think about unless you live in the warm deserts
of the Southwest. However, heat can be a major risk in any part of the
country - especially in areas where there is excessive humidity. Heat
related illnesses can affect people of all ages and these illnesses tend to
progress quickly, so it is essential that you know what to look for. Below
is a closer look at what you need to know to beat the heat this summer.
Recognize the signs of heat illness
Did you know that by the time you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated?
Quenching your thirst is also a poor indicator of proper hydration.
Therefore, you will want to know some of the other signs of dehydration
that may also indicate heat stroke or exhaustion. Look for heavy sweating,
confusion, dizziness, hangover-like headaches, muscle weakness or cramps
and nausea. If these signs are present, find a cool area, drink some water
and call 911 for assistance.
Know the hazards of heat
Even in 80 degree weather, heat can be problematic. When you are out
in the sun for long periods, your body will use water much faster, so
you need to drink extra and take breaks out of direct sunlight. Physical
activity also raises your body temperature, so you should consider this
when you go out for a jog during the summertime.
Identify high-risk situations
Every year brings a flurry of news stories of children and pets suffering
fatal heat illness and these incidents are usually attributed to being left
in the car. In just 10 minutes, the temperature inside of the car can jump
from the temperature outside at 80 degrees to 99 degrees. Children or
pets left in these conditions can quickly overheat and lose consciousness.
Adults should exercise caution for their own sake as well, as there
have been many instances of adults falling asleep in the car and suffering
fatal heat stroke. Other risky situations in the heat include periods of
outdoor work or physical activity, hot days at high elevation areas and
consumption of alcohol in the summer heat.
Stay prepared
To fight back against the heat, stick to indoor activities during the hottest
parts of the day. You will also want to carry water wherever you go and
wear lightweight clothing made from breathable fabrics like linen or
cotton. What you eat can also affect how your body handles the heat -
meats and other high protein foods cause your body to use more water
in digestion.
DO YOU NEED TO SEE A
DOCTOR FOR A SUNBURN?
Even if you regularly apply sunscreen before going outdoors and
wear protective clothing, all it takes is a little too much time before
reapplication or one day of forgetting to wear sunscreen to wind up
with a nasty sunburn. The signs of a sunburn will be evident before
10 July 2018 | Bella Terra Community Newsletter

the damage fully reveals itself, as the burn won’t likely sting, hurt or
peel until later. That means that a little redness now could be much
more painful in a couple hours. If you have a more serious sunburn,
the pain and swelling may keep you from sitting or lying down comfortably
and it could have you feeling extra tired and worn down after
a day in the sun. When a sunburn becomes so painful, you might
wonder if you need to see a doctor to treat your skin.
Signs of Severe Damage
While most sunburns can be treated with at-home care, it is necessary to
see a doctor if the burn is more severe. Like any severe burns, excessive
sunburn can cause damage to the deeper layers of the skin and dramatically
raise the risk of infection, due to open sores and blisters. Let’s look at some
signs you should bring to the attention of a doctor if you have a sunburn:
Blisters - Small blisters are no need for alarm - though they do indicate
that you’ve gotten more severe sun damage and should take
extra steps to stay covered until the skin heals. When you have more
than 20% coverage of blisters, however, you will want to head to an
urgent care facility or ER for burn treatment.
Chills or fever - Chills or a high fever, especially in children affected
by sunburns, can be a sign of overexposure and heat illness and they
might also indicate infection. The body will raise its temperature to
fight off infection, so a fever accompanied by open blisters should
not be left to chance without medical care.
Wooziness - Dizziness and wooziness are signs that a sunburn is more
serious and that the sun has taken its toll.
First Aid for Your Sunburn
One mistake that people often make is assuming that once a burn
shows up, the damage is done, so it’s safe to stay out in the sun. The
truth is that a sunburn will continue getting worse as long as you
remain exposed. In fact, damage may accelerate, because the skin
has already sustained harm. If possible, get out of the sun as soon
as you see any redness or tenderness develop. If you cannot retreat
indoors or to the shade, put on more sunscreen and cover up with
a hat and more clothing.
You may notice that a sunburn continues to feel worse even after
you get out of the sun. Cooling the skin down with a cool shower or
bath can offer some instant relief and over-the-counter NSAIDs like
ibuprofen and Tylenol will reduce swelling and pain over a longer
period. After a shower, apply some aloe or soothing lotion - those containing
oatmeal can further reduce redness and irritation on the skin.
What’s the Damage?
Even a very painful sunburn will feel mostly better within a week or
so, which might lead you to wonder if a sunburn is even that bad.
What you must consider is the lingering after effects of sun damage,
which can include cell damage that leads to premature aging, skin
cancer and a rough, leathery appearance of the skin later in life. One
sunburn is not likely to leave a substantial mark in the long-term,
but repeated damage can have lifelong effects.
If advice to drink more water falls on deaf ears for you because you
just don’t enjoy the taste of water or you always forget to pack a water
bottle, you don’t have to suffer from dehydration as a result. You can
seek more water from other sources - primarily from foods containing a
higher percentage of water content. Incidentally, the selection of produce
available in the summer season is packed with hydrating choices, so try
incorporating more of these into your diet to get the hydration you need.
Fresh Berries
If you’ve ever bitten into a fresh blueberry, strawberry or raspberry and
had brightly colored juice burst out of the fruit, you can see how these
fruits make a hydrating option. It’s currently the peak of berry season,
so pick up a few pints at your grocery store or farmer’s market. If berries
aren’t your preference, peaches, nectarines and pears are also juicy,
flavorful options at the height of their harvest season.
Radish
Celery has a reputation for its high-water content, but it doesn’t offer
much by way of flavor and some find the texture less than desirable.
Radishes have just about as much water as celery, but they offer a delightful
peppery kick, making them a perfect addition to any salad or a
great choice for dipping in hummus or guacamole.
2. Sunflower Seeds: The perfect phytochemical-rich seed for those
of us looking to lose weight, as they promote healthy digestion and
increase fiber intake. Sunflower seeds are also extremely rich in folate,
a very important nutrient for women. They are packed full of good fats,
antioxidant-rich Vitamin E, selenium and copper, all crucial elements in
supporting heart health and balancing troublesome cellular damage.
3. Sesame seeds: Sesame seeds are very high in calcium, magnesium,
zinc, fiber, iron, B1 and phosphorus, sesame seeds are unique in their
as well as protect the liver from damage. Sesame seeds also may
help prevent many health problems, including PMS.
4. Pumpkin Seeds: Some scientific studies have shown that the components
of pumpkin seeds may stop the triggering of cancerous behavior
in male prostate cells. Pumpkin seeds are high in a form of antioxidant
known as carotenoids, a special plant derivative that enhances immune
activity and disease fighting capacities. These seeds are also high in
omega-3 fatty acids and zinc, two important nutrients that may play
GARDEN TIPS FOR JULY
• Plant fall flowering annuals where your spring annuals have
bloomed out. Set our seeds like zinnia, marigold, cosmos, petunia
and portulaca so you'll have color until frost. Don't let seedlings
dry out.
• In summer, prune roses to keep them in shape. Continue black
spot and insect treatments. Water 2" once per week.
• Remove spent crepe myrtle flowers to prolong bloom
production.
• Weeds rob plants of valuable water, nutrients--remove them.
• Great sun/heat-lovers include coral honeysuckle,
coreopsis, lantana, oleanders and hamelia.
• Fertilize flowers lightly, if at all; too hot for heavy feedings.
• Water your lawn longer but less frequent. Deep water of about 2
- 3" per week forces plant roots to grow down, instead of sideways
into sunbaked upper soil levels. Use a bowl in your yard to measure
during waterings.
10 REASONS WHY READING IS SO IMPORTANT
1. IMAGINATION
By reading, you are exposed to so many wonderful things. This helps your
imagination when it comes to creating and thinking. By reading, you are
painting those pictures of the story in your mind. Books can take you anywhere
you want to go.
2. FOCUS AND CONCENTRATION
When you are reading, you are focusing and concentrating on one thing. By
sitting still and reading, you are training your body/mind and your child’s
to slow down, relax and focus on what you are reading. This helps you/
your child focus and concentrate on other activities because you are used
to doing it.
3. READING IMPROVES YOUR MEMORY
When you read a book, you are taking in all that the book is about. People,
places, things… When you read you are using your memory muscle which
lies in the Cerebrum part of your brain. Using this muscle helps your memory
long term. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of muscle memory, same
kind of thing.
4. READING HELPS WITH COMMUNICATION
Reading to your children helps build a bond and open up communication.
It’s always important to be able to talk with your kids especially when they
get into their teenage years. Start reading to them and communicating when
they are young so they have that connection and comfort with talking to you.
It also helps with communicating as adults and gives you more to talk about.
5. ENTERTAINMENT
Reading is the best cheap or free entertainment you can get. Love your
library and any bookseller, because these books can open up the world
you might never have imagined.
6. BONDING
Nurturing and one-on-one attention from parents during reading encourages
children to form a positive association with books and reading. Also,
goes with #4 above - Communication. Reading to your children is another
way of showing them love.
7. LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
Babies and children learn to talk by hearing words. The more they hear, the
more likely they are to talk and understand what’s being said. Your child’s
language skills and literacy depend on you talking and reading to them.
Now doesn’t that sound important?!
8. CHEAP OR FREE EDUCATION
Reading a book for something that you want to learn about saves you so
much money. We all know how expensive taking classes can be, so why not
spend time reading about it instead. You can teach yourself with specific
books. Same goes for children. If they are interested in learning about
rainbows, they can read books about weather. Or you can read to them.
Supplying a variety of books to your children will pique their interests and
get them learning even more.
9. FLUENCY
Fluency is defined as the ability to read with speed, accuracy and expression.
Powerful and effective language.
10. READING MAKES YOU SMARTER
We know its been proven that reading makes you smarter. Readers display
greater knowledge of how things work, vocabulary and language development,
as well as information on people, places and things.
Summer Reading
and
Library News
SUMMER READING CLUBS “Libraries Rock!”
Through-August 31st
Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the
summer to encourage reading among readers of all ages. Library programs
and activities begin during the week of June 4th and continue
through July 28th. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading
Clubs (SRC) and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county
of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library
or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.
fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” image, which
became available on May 28th. When the online registration form
has been completed, readers will then have their own online page
on which to record their books or reading time. Reading rewards can
be redeemed beginning Monday, June 4th. Prizes must be collected
from the “primary library of use” that the reader indicated on the
registration form. The last day to pick up awards is September 1st. The
Summer Reading Clubs are sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries,
the Friends organizations that support the county library system and
the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states
working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading
program materials for public libraries.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR CHILDREN
Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to
come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting
programs and join in some fun activities to kick off a great summer!
Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they
will earn rewards based on the total number of books they read or
have read to them. For the first five books read, the child will receive
a bookmark. The rewards continue with a certificate for 10 books, a
pencil for 15 books and a reading trophy for the first 20 books read.
For every 20 books read, the participant’s name will also be written on
a picture of a drum to be displayed in that branch library. The names
of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area
stores - donated by the Friends of the Library organizations - that will
be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing
scheduled in August at each library location.
MIDDLE SCHOOL SUMMER CHALLENGE
Area youth in grades 6-8 can participate in the SRC by logging online the
time they spend reading. Kids are encouraged to read as many books
as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total amount of
time they spend reading. For the first 10 hours (600 minutes) of reading,
each reader will receive a mystery prize. Upon completion of 20 hours
(1,200 minutes) of reading, readers will receive a trophy. The names of
participants who complete 20 or more hours of reading will be entered
into a drawing for a
$25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the
library - that will be awarded to one lucky reader
at each branch library in a drawing that will take place in August.
SUMMER READING CLUB FOR TEENS & ADULTS
Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate
in the YA & Adult SRC by reading books and participating in
optional weekly “challenges” that can be completed individually at
home online. Completing the challenges will gain readers additional
entries for the drawings for an FBCL mobile power pack that will take
place twice a month in June and July at each branch library for readers
who log in and record their reading each week. All YA and adult
readers who complete the goal of reading five books will earn a dual
highlighter/pen or a geometric coloring bookmark. In addition, the
names of participants who complete at least five books will be entered
into a drawing for a $25 gift card - donated by the Friends of the library
- that will be awarded to one reader at each branch library in a drawing
that will take place at the end of July. An ultimate grand prize will be
awarded to one lucky reader in the library system. Participants in the
YA/Adult Summer Reading Club who complete the program by reading
five books will be entered into a drawing for a 16 GB Fire HD 8 tablet
with a red case, which will be awarded to one winner in the library
system on August 6th. The last day to pick up awards is September 1st.
