Westfield Community Association Newsletter No. 164 May 2018
Here is another action packed issue, particularly due to the WCA activities at this time of year - namely the
Annual Fete, Draw / Lottery and the AGM. We rely on residents, readers, friends to help out with the many
tasks which combine to keep the community spirit alive in Westfield. The fete gives an opportunity for most
people to contribute from help on the day or before, running a stall, providing a raffle prize, to displaying a
poster (the one on the back page) and much more. Please contact Annie (annieverybusy@googlemail.com)
or myself (details at the foot of this page).
Thanks as always to those who deliver your quarterly copy of this newsletter - which I have edited for 27
years now besides typesetting, organising the distribution, advertising etc., and as many people know,
running the Draw which is now the Lottery, see below. I also thank those people who help with
the collection of subscriptions. Whilst the WCA is grateful for your support it would be
appreciated if subs could be paid directly into the WCA bank account by standing
order or e-transfer to relieve the pressure for me and my team.
Let’s hope summer comes to stay by the time you are reading this issue. Pauline
ast moving traffic appears to be on the increase regardless of other road
F users, speed limits, signs and markings. In Westfield, Community Speed
Watch volunteers have an effect but a permanent presence is not possible.
Some eagle-eyed readers may remember that five years ago Mr Rafati wrote to this
WCA newsletter with his concerns, in particular on Kent Street – A21. We had one
written response from another area, also highlighting excess speed but
in a 40 limit.
Mr Rafati set up a campaign to raise awareness and seek support from
fellow residents. He sent a letter to East Sussex Highways and had a
meeting with our MP on site. However the new signage, paint and
attention to the ever-growing vegetation have not withdrawn the speed
problem. It has to be remembered that Kent Street is a residential area with
emerging traffic, pedestrians for the bus and post box besides access to their
neighbours, business customers etc.
Mr Rafati continues his concern and wrote to Amber Rudd MP in
February this year with the following suggestions: to reduce the speed
limit from 50 to 40 mph, install speed cameras and warning signs
relating to the cameras, to create a double white line down the length of
Kent Street in an attempt to stop overtaking, particularly by motor cyclists, all in
an attempt to prevent any more fatal accidents.
If you feel able to support this campaign please phone Mr Rafati on 01424 722319,
0797 1231526 or email hmrafati@yahoo.co.uk
Cllr Carl Maynard said “This is an issue that we are all aware of; Kent Street is a
dangerous stretch of the A21 and anything we can do to make the road safer
would be beneficial. This is a matter for determination by Highways England not
ESCC as this is a trunk road. Anyone with concerns should write in the first
instance to Amber Rudd MP”
Copies of this WCA Newsletter are delivered to most houses in Kent Street (it is
also on www.westfield.village.co.uk under WCA). As it is difficult to find someone
to volunteer on a regular basis to deliver to Kent Street residents, I (WCA editor)
have personally delivered and agree with Mr Rafati how dangerous it is without a
pavement (I found holes in the verge to fall down if not careful) with traffic,
particularly large lorries, rushing by.
Another problem with traffic is the parking – not only too close to junctions but on
roads where an emergency vehicle would be unable to get through. Please
consider others when you park your vehicle, one day you may need help yourself.
1 ST WESTFIELD SCOUT GROUP
T
he Group started the year with two successful events.
Our Jumble Sale in February raised £283, thank you all who
contributed articles for sale and, of course, our band of
helpers, not forgetting those seeking bargains.
The annual Duck Race was a great success raising over £200. The weather was kind,
especially with the not-so-good Spring we have endured. Thank you to the large
number of people who came, and enjoyed a burger or hot dog before the big race,
and also to those who purchased ducks. This is our favourite event of the year and
such fun.
Now the weather is at last changing for the better (not when the editor was at work
on this article!) the Sections are planning many outside activities and camps for the
summer.
A party of 23 Cubs and Beavers much enjoyed a PGL weekend in March held at
Herstmonceux. There were lots of activities to try and join in. We are pleased how
well our young people behaved and represented Westfield.
As usual we are seeking adult Leaders so we can offer even more fun for the young
people and hopefully re-start the Scout troop. There are vacancies in the Cub Pack
for boys or girls in the age group 8 – 10 years so if your son or daughter would like to
give it a try please contact Frances on 754548.
Have you heard about our “PIG”?
The doctors’ surgeries in Westfield and Sedlescombe have started an initiative called the
Patient Involvement Group. This group meets every six weeks and has the aim of
working with both surgery staff and patients to develop and improve the service offered.
We welcome new members and if you would like to be part of this group, please contact
Keith Newman, the Practice Manager on 01424 751609.
A Summary of the last meeting held on Tuesday 3rd April
The group talked about the following events and topics:
1. A meeting between the GPs and representatives of the P.I.G. had been held to describe the work
of the group to the practice doctors. The GPs commented on the high number of patient
appointments which were not actually medical in nature - these appointments were made by
people needing assistance in contacting other agencies. The PIG group hopes to help people with
these type of needs in future.
2. The PIG website and leaflet has been updated.
3. Kevin Katner commented on the results of the recent Patient Survey saying that, overall, he felt
that people believed that the surgeries offered an excellent service. Some areas for development
were indicated:- People were reluctant to use IT so this issue needed some attention. Only a small
proportion of the respondents commented that they did not feel respected or listened to
appropriately during their visits to the surgery. Some access problems were raised and people with
visual impairment found the booking screens hard to use. There were questions raised about the
validity of the survey because of the size of the response and the type of questions asked. Action
points will be established at the next meeting.
4. The final draft of a statement of Purpose and Protocols, describing the aims and remit of the
group was presented and approved unanimously.
5. Four new people have expressed interest in becoming members of PIG. These people will be
first invited to join the virtual group and then meetings with PIG representatives will be arranged
over the coming weeks.
6. Information about the PIG and the minutes of meetings is now going to be published in the
Westfield Village Website, the “What’s on in Westfield” Facebook, the WCA newsletter, the
“Sedlescombe Jobs Network” Facebook.
7. On 18 April Kevin gave a brief talk to the Sedlescombe Assembly.
8. Meetings have taken place with 5 of the 7 health practices in our area. Health education was a
key topic for discussion.
9. Representatives from the PIG attended the Health Education Forum at the Emmanuel Centre in
Battle on 16 May.
The next meeting was on Tuesday 15 May at Westfield Surgery. (WCA newsletter had gone to print)
Monday 16 April.
The children are raring to go
as we begin exploring our
new topics for the summer terms including River Deep Mountain High, What’s in my
back yard, Greeks and Romans, Eating and Growing and Westfield Wellies. With
outings planned already to Leeds Castle, Frog Firle Farm, and Michelham Priory, we
are praying for fine weather to enable us to enjoy some great days out in the open.
The school field is now back in action for our break and lunch times; we will be using
this facility more and more for sports days and events as the weeks warm up. There are
many after school sports clubs running at the moment, including gym, karate,
cheerleading, cricket, netball and football. It is encouraging to see all these clubs fully
booked with enthusiastic children taking part.
When SATS are complete, and we have had a well-earned half term break at the end of
May, we are looking forward to taking our Years 5/6 classes on a PGL break to
Windmill Hill, Herstmonceux. An annual event, this year being three days in early June,
of fun, games, team building and collaboration activities.
As usual, the grand finale to the school year will be our Years 5 and 6 production. This
year we will be staging the classic tale of Oliver Twist. The preparations are already
underway and as usual this should be a spectacular end before the holidays.
At the end of March, we got the call and were paid a visit by Ofsted. We are very
pleased to announce that our establishment has been awarded a ‘Good School’ rating.
All credit to our teachers and support staff and, of course, our pupils. The full report is
available to view on our Westfield School website.
Our doors will close for the summer on Friday 20 July. We shall be saying a fond
farewell to our Year 6 pupils as they embark on their new journeys in secondary school.
The fete has been designed for the whole village to become
involved. It enables village organisations to have a stall and
make money for their cause without the hassle of having to
pay for and organise insurance, entertainment and pa
systems etc. with only a small monetary contribution to the
WCA. It is a shame that the absentees are often due to
lack of support from their members. The large venue
enables anyone to book a pitch (£15) for a sideshow or stall but avoid the following
as they are already booked: refreshments, ice cream, candy floss and bar with Hog
Roast. The afternoon activities include the fabulous Acromax gym display team,
1066 Falconry, Princess Baby Ballet, a select collection of classic cars, children’s
entertainer, bouncy castles and live music. The Grand Draw is run by the
WCA who would be grateful for prize donations as well as support in
purchasing tickets, available with the WCA newsletter or in The New Inn.
We were very pleased to see so many families at our
50th birthday celebration as well as some ex-members of staff. The weather prevented us from taking
advantage of our lovely garden for outside activities resulting in us being a little cramped inside but
nonetheless we are delighted with the event and hope everyone enjoyed themselves. In excess of £350 was
raised which will go towards much needed equipment and activities. We are very grateful to our committee
and members of staff for giving up their time to organise the event and thank everyone who donated raffle
prizes. We also had very generous sponsorship from:- PCM Estate Agents, Factory Internet, A1 roofing and
Bereavements
Condolences to the relatives of
Janet Colvert
John Wallenstein
John Barnett writes: Sadly Janet Colvert
passed away in February. Janet had a true
community spirit stemming partly from her
lifetime's work as a Teacher, Head, Advisor
and Disability Advocate across the East End
(during the Kray era!), Essex, Kent and East
Sussex and more personally from her
Fostering. Janet lived quietly in the village
but was a strong supporter of the community
not hesitating to take up the Secretary post of
the WCA for three years and then Chair of
the Hall Management Committee until last
year. I had the honour of working alongside
Janet in both those roles; it was a pleasure
and a very hard act to follow. We mustn't, of
course, forget her more recent roles in WCA
events such as the Seniors Party and the Fete.
I was privileged to attend a small family
service to remember and say goodbye to Janet
where it was very clear she was well loved
and sadly missed by family, friends,
colleagues and Westfield. After all our years
of friendship she never once told me she used
to play the bassoon!!
THE GREAT PLASTIC PICK UP
The battle against plastic pollution launched by the Mail in May and supported
by the Keep Britain Tidy organisation was a great success with school
children across the country.
It is now time for us adults to build on this initiative and to set a good example
to our children by picking up the litter we see on the street outside our own homes. We
have the duty to teach these - the future generations - by our example. John Butterworth
In March our talk was “Tales from the Time of the British Raj” and how it
affected those living in India. The speaker was Mrs. Rukshana Master BA and
she also showed us some very interesting slides.
Chichester Cathedral Friends
A TREAT FOR ALL LOVERS
OF BOOKS AND HISTORY
ou may think that a history book sale is a very narrow base for a successful sale,
Y but Chichester Cathedral Friends and West Sussex Archives Society have a
different view and are co-hosting a second-hand History Book Sale in The Vicars’ Hall,
Chichester, 12 -13 October to which you are warmly invited. Entrance is free, and half
of the proceeds will go towards projects within the Cathedral that are supported by the
Friends.
“History Books” encompass a wide range of categories from Local History,
Biographies, Architecture and Military to Railways, Historical Surveys, Family History
and Churches, and we plan to have a wide selection of second-hand books on sale for
the two days. Some books will be specialist collectables whilst others will be of a more
general nature and on sale at a very attractive price.
So, if you have a love of books and especially history books, do come along and
browse among the many bargains that will be on offer.
Also, if you have any suitable books that you would be happy to donate, we would be
delighted to include them in the Sale. Please see advert above; ask at the Royal
Chantry, next to Cloisters Café, for directions to the Friends’ Office. Collection within
the Chichester area, please call Iain Jessup 07973 768917.
During the two-day Book Sale Cloisters Café will provide refreshments and light
lunches, enabling you to browse for as long as you wish.
From the Vicarage……Walking and Praying
ne of the things I don't tend to do enough of these days is to go on a long
O walk. They often tend to be short walks, for example, when I go to the
school to take assemblies. When I'm walking around the village, even on the
short walk from the vicarage to the church, it is great to meet people and have
conversations, often about the weather but more deeper subjects too.
I often use a walk as a time of prayer. It can be a great escape away from the
emails and telephone (if I remember to turn my mobile off, or leave it behind!) In
amongst the birds singing, the stillness, the distance noise of the children
playing at school. It's a good time to think and ponder.
Encouraging us to pray more is why this year has been designated the Year of
Prayer in the Diocese of Chichester, challenging us on how we pray and why.
We pray to God as a conversation with Him, our thoughts and concerns. Often
we pray about worries or for those in need. The church is usually open for
prayer but we can pray wherever we are, on short and long walks. If you would
like us to pray for you or loved ones then the church offers many opportunities.
There is a prayer box in the church and we usually pray the requests during our
Wednesday morning service. There is an opportunity for personal prayer during
and after our Sunday services and, also Joy, our Associate Vicar, runs a
confidential prayer share - you can email or telephone requests to her.
I hope many of you have managed to meet and welcome our new Youth Pastor
Graham. Graham leads our youth church and it has been great to welcome new
families on Sunday mornings. Graham is also planning 'Messy Church' on
Saturday afternoons, based on our Good Friday Workshop (see page 24).
Look at our website or on Facebook for details.
Graham’s contact details: 07787 527166 - graham@westfieldchurch.co.uk
Coming up is our Vicarage Garden Party, please do come
and join us. Everyone is welcome. We are hoping for a
lovely sunny afternoon with lots of entertainment for all
ages and, of course, tea and cake.
Every blessing
O
ur Spring Show had a wonderful and entertaining display of
beauty and talent. It was enjoyed by all who came. A record
year for total number of entries and we were delighted that several
were first time exhibitors.
The triumph of the Show was having the Floral Art arrangements restored to
former glory and filling the entire length of the Community Hall. Congratulations
to all entrants but particularly those who rose to the challenge and entered for the
first time, two of whom received first and second place in their categories!
As always with gardening there are challenges; the weather and creepy crawlies
conspired against the daffodils, which meant there were not so many on display
as in previous years, but there were plenty of other Spring Flowers and early
vegetables to enjoy.
There was an incredibly high standard of art and craft work as well as over thirty
photographs. Some delicious home produce, with the most popular being the
carrot cake and the fruit curd. Sadly, only a handful of children entered the Junior
classes but those that did had made a wonderful effort producing some lovely
pieces.
Photographer Tim White was busy with his camera, see a selection below and on
the front page of this WCA newsletter.
We’ll soon be preparing for our next show in the
Autumn, on Saturday, 8th September.
and drinks. All are welcome so why not invite family and friends. There is limited parking so
please walk if you can, up past the Doctors’ Surgery.
It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that due to family commitments one of our lovely
helpers will no longer be able to help at youth club. We will miss Sarah greatly but want to
say a massive thank you to her for all her help and support over the years.
So from September we will be looking for a regular volunteer to help us out twice a month. If
you think you would be able to commit to this please contact me for more information on
WESTFIELD GUIDES and BROWNIES
hree of our Guides are working hard to complete their
T Baden-Powell Challenge before it is stopped at the end of
the year to be replaced by a new challenge. Many mum's and grandmother's will
remember this as a top award in the movement. Of the ten parts, the girls have
completed the World Guiding Badge, started compiling a recipe book for camp,
attended a conservation day at Forest Row and have started another badge.
They are booked to go canoeing and stand up paddle boarding also on a county
adventure day in May then sailing and windsurfing in June.
These activities are now fully booked but to take part in any future events any
girls aged between 10 and 14 are welcome to become a member.
For details contact Sally on 01424 754927 or text 0784 050 6426
This term the girls have chosen their own badges to work on
at our meetings and some at home or at other clubs.
Games and action songs are popular at the moment to
complete the meeting and as a fitness challenge we are planning a walk around
the school walk track every week of the summer.
Over half of the girls attended a special silent disco on 21 April at
The Brass Monkey in Hastings where they danced and tried
mocktails. At our meeting on 24 April they celebrated St George's
Day making costumes and dragons.
hen the sun came out in April and the rain ceased, we were able to practise
on the bowls green. It was short lived but, fingers crossed, as I write that we
will be able to return to the green soon. We have plans for a very busy
summer with well over fifty games against other clubs and our own club competitions.
Also two tournaments will be held to help with always essential fund raising.
On Saturday 7 July from 2 pm there is a Family Barbecue Fun day. Admission is free
with a small charge for food. Everyone is welcome to watch or have a go, but only if you
are over 14 years due to health and safety rules as the bowls are heavy.
We are off by coach to Wingate near Rochester, Kent, on Sunday 15 July for a game in
the afternoon. Leaving Westfield at 10 am sharp, members have about two hours to
look around Rochester and most have lunch too. Those playing are taken on, then
everyone is back on the coach about 5.30 – 6 pm reaching home around 8 pm. The
cost per person is around £17 max; there are a few places available to non-members
resident in Westfield. To book a seat or have more information please contact me,
number below, or Pam 01424 754226.
Members are at the clubhouse every Wednesday and Friday
from 2 pm if you want to come along for a chat and cup of tea
(£1). Unfortunately the Zumba classes have ceased for the
time being. Watch this space if they resume.
The Defibrillator is now installed and we are waiting for it to be registered. An expert will
give us a demonstration.
Due to work commitments of the present secretary, the Bowls Club is looking for
someone who is available to come to committee meetings about every 6 weeks. The job
involves taking the minutes and sending them out to the committee with the agenda in
time for the next meeting. There is a little extra work for the AGM. If interested, please
contact me.
WESTFIELD COMMUNITY HUB
at THE NEW INN
between 10 am & Noon FRIDAYs
here have been various activities and events since the last newsletter, including a
T subsidised trip to a Ruth Rendell mystery production, Gallowglass, at the
Devonshire Park Theatre in Eastbourne back in March. We’re not sure if everyone
understood who done-it in the end, but it was most enjoyable.
We’ve repeated the ever popular monthly 50:50 draws, continued the regular Play Your
Cards Right, organised an Easter raffle and had a wicked quiz to test locals knowledge
of some of the hundreds of islands that make up the United Kingdom – which was
almost unanimously judged as too difficult – people were even making donations to
Hub funds to avoid being asked to participate !
Plans are at various states for activities through the rest of the year. The driving treasure
hunt that was postponed from the end of last year is still on the cards, but a firm date
still hasn’t been set for that.
A decision still needs to be made as to what attendance at the village fete in June will
consist of but something participatory will be on the cards.
We’re currently signing up anyone who wants to join the collaborative visit to
Ashburnham Place on Thursday 5 July with the Horticultural Society. We’re also
keeping our eyes on the various Eastbourne, Bexhill and Hastings theatre schedules as
these appears to be something most suggested as activities that don’t require much
activity! A weekend trip, maybe to Devon, is currently being investigated but we’re not
holding our breath for that one.
Westfield Village Rocks instigated by Dee Homewood, recipient of Volunteer Award - see page 47
Last year Dee became aware of a new craze happening within the UK ‘Rock hunting’ and felt this could work
in Westfield. After some research pebble painting began, marking the backs with WVR or Westfield Village
Rocks with a Facebook motive as well so that it would be recognised as a stone belonging to Westfield.
On 16 February before dawn Dee, quite nervous yet excited, went around the village hiding around 20
rocks. She then activated the Facebook page to explain how to play and asked a few friends to hunt for the
rocks and take photos for the group, and hide them again. Gradually word got around and photos of rocks
were appearing on the group page, children appeared in abundance in search of rocks. Today there are 300
plus members and to Dee’s knowledge 600 plus rocks have been hidden.
The aim of WVR is to spread a little happiness, caring and sharing. The benefits are enjoyment, community
spirit, it’s fun for all ages, Its free and gets everyone out in the fresh air! Many people are painting the most
fantastic rocks, this in itself is therapeutic and allows artistic flare to flow in all of us!
Absolutely brilliant, well done Dee.
Hands of Hope Reg Charity No: 1168016
This is a new charity benefiting the communities
of East Sussex and West Kent, using growing
and cooking to reconnect people with where
their food comes from, whilst tackling Childhood
Obesity and Loneliness which are two of the
biggest challenges in the 21st Century. Already
farming in Peasmarsh, supporting schools and a
senior’s lunch club in Northiam, the charity has
recently purchased 18 acres of beautiful land which includes woodland and even an Edwardian
Walled Garden on Moor Hill, Hawkhurst. The plan is to restore the garden, which used to feed the
residents of Hall House, to its former glory and beauty, making the site a place to grow, learn,
meet and enjoy for everyone in East Sussex and West Kent.
The plans are (apart from growing food of course!) to create several projects here, including a
Forest School, Men In Sheds, Hens of Hope, Bee in Company, Schools’ Projects, Helping Hands
Lunch Clubs, Children and Families’ Cooking Schools and much more.
We are looking for all kinds of volunteers, skilled and unskilled, including ground workers, joiners,
brick layers, electricians, plumbers, catering assistants for our food van and so on. Could you
help? Please get in touch!
RECRUITING! We are also looking for a cook van manager
to travel, educate and sell vegetarian food at festivals etc. In
addition, we are also after a head grower…have you got
green fingers? Here’s your chance to be right in at the
infancy of a very exciting project, shaping something that will
benefit you and many future generations to come.
Westfield Cricket Club Spring 2018
D
espite the recent poor weather work has been progressing on the preparation of
the cricket ground for what will be a very busy and challenging season.
As previously reported our 1st X1 will be playing in the new Sussex League
Division 11 and our newly formed 2nd X1 in Division 14 of the same league - this means
that there will be a home game most Saturdays so please come along and support. Both
of our junior sections (All Stars for 5 to 8 year olds and Colts from 9 to 17 year olds) will
be running again in 2018; the Colts started on Monday 23 April from 5 to 6 pm and the All
Stars will be starting on Sunday 20 May from 10 to 11 am.
Personnel: Good luck to our four Colts who will be playing adult cricket for the first time
this season and good luck to all our new signings and returning players. As many of you
will know, David Legg (Leggy) has stepped down as chair person and has been replaced
by me, Ian Taylor; on behalf of WCC I would like to thank Leggy for all of his hard work
over the many years in keeping the cricket club going. I am extremely pleased to say that
he will still be our Head Groundsman and a valuable member of our committee.
Sponsors: Sponsorship is a very important element of any sports club and WCC are
grateful to The New Inn, KN Kitchens and J. Perigoe and Son for their continued
backing.
Westfield School: WCC are proud to continue to work with Westfield School and this
year we are even busier with an after school cricket club running on Wednesday
afternoons and, when the weather improves, we will be running the Friday lunchtime
cricket sessions. In addition to these two programmes we are developing with the school
an inter-school competition which we will host at the cricket ground.
Events: The Quiz Night on 25 March was a big success with much needed funds raised
to support the on-going development of WCC, thanks to Patrick and his team for hosting
the event and to Dan and Min for running the event. CricketFest was a great success for
WCC last year and we will be repeating the event this year on Sunday 8 July; please see
poster on page 36 and watch out for further updates; come along and join in. We hope
that we are blessed with the excellent weather again.
Membership: The annual cost of membership to WCC for 2018 remains at the very
competitive price of £1, please come along and enjoy the fun that is Westfield Cricket
Club.
New Pavilion: This project is getting closer and the required documentation should be
completed by the end of April with the next step being to send out tender documents to
interested parties. WCC is very grateful for all of the support we are receiving from WPC
and the news that WPC has now purchased the cricket ground is a huge bonus so thank
you, Westfield Parish Council.
Nets: The new nets, mentioned in the last report, were due for delivery on 11 April so
another big step forward in the development of players and the club.
Members / Players: As a club that is developing strongly and quickly, we are always
looking to recruit new members and players; if you would like to get involved, either on or
off the field of play, please contact one of officers below or any other committee member
that you may know.
Westfield Youth FC
ur February to May update for the readers of the Community
O newsletter mentioned our intention to develop more youth sides at
age groups u7 to u17. Some of these plans have been delayed by actions of unknown
persons trying to take over the Guestling Playing fields from its current tenants. A very
disappointing outcome when we are trying to provide a sound, stable and supportive
club framework to provide sport opportunities for young children in the rural areas. We
will update the community as soon as plans are in place and hope residents will
support the club. Our vision for the future will be to provide teams at all age groups, but
this takes volunteers, from committee members, team managers and assistants to our
wonderful parents and players and helpers. If you would like to get involved please
contact our chairman graham@knightaccountants.co.uk
As I previously reported we have two youth teams this season. The u13 + 14’s. This
season is coming to a close, delayed by the very wet winter weather, with the last
games due to be played by the first weeks in May.
Results have been difficult to achieve for our u14 side who are looking to add to their
squad of boys & girls for next season. Contact Paul phobden@icloud.com.
The u13 have had more success getting to the Top Flight Trophy Cup final at The
Polegrove against a strong Bexhill Utd team. The occasion was made more special as
the Westfield boys won the match 4-1. Champions 2018.
The team also have a chance to win their league, they need to beat Hastings Utd in an
upcoming fixture at the parish field (and win the rest of their games!!) so still a tough
task. Hopefully I can report this news in the next newsletter. The team may have space
for next season contact Heath heath.moir@gmail.com
With summer almost here you may notice work being carried out soon on the main
grass area of the parish field. This is funded by the club to improve the playing surface
and its durability. We hope it doesn't spoil residents enjoyment of the field whilst it's
completed.
Don't forget to contact us if you want to get involved, have a child or group of children
that are looking to join a team, or can help the club as a volunteer or by sponsorship.
School Invites Bursary Applications
Are you aware of a child in your Parish who would benefit from a boarding education, regardless of family
means? Christ’s Hospital near Horsham in Sussex, invites applications for bursary places which can cover
up to 100% of boarding fees.
Year 5 pupils who are considering secondary education in September 2019 are invited to apply.
Simon Reid, Headmaster said: “All candidates applying for a place will be assessed on their potential,
both academically and the broader curriculum opportunities. Currently means-tested bursaries are granted
to nearly 650 of our (892) pupils; 20% of those receive a free place with nearly 50% paying less than 10%
of the full boarding fee. Children attending the School are provided with uniforms, meals, accommodation,
all teaching and learning materials. Being part of the boarding school community is a life-changing
adventure that many children will only have dreamt or read about.”
The closing date for applications for September 2019 entry into Year 7 is Friday, 14 September 2018.
Christ’s Hospital was established over 460 years ago as a charitable boarding school and is proud to
maintain its founding principles and ethos. It offers educational opportunity, particularly for children from
disadvantaged backgrounds. Admissions enquiries are warmly welcomed. Please telephone
01403 246555 or email hello@christs-hospital.org.uk for more information. www.christs-hospital.org.uk
February
Window on Westfield
The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter
Compiled by the clerk to the Council, Kate Darbyshire. A brief
summary of Council business conducted at their February, March
& April meetings. Full minutes are on the website
http://www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/council-papers
Council discussed the terms of a new lease for the Tennis Club, and
negotiations are still ongoing. The Club play an important role in keeping the
courts in good order, but the Council is keen to increase the use of the courts,
which are expensive to maintain. It was decided to start using an on-line
booking system to make it easier for people to see when the courts are
available for hire. February saw the launch of this news system. You can
register at: https://fastcourts.com/clubs/WestfieldTennisCourts
When you register you will receive log in details to enable you to book courts up
to two weeks in advance. You will also receive updates on forthcoming
coaching sessions and tennis activities. You can hire the courts for just £2 per
hour. You will still need to pay for your booking and pick up the key from Londis
Village Stores.
March
Council helped secure
the future of cricket in
the village by
purchasing the Cricket
Ground, the first major
land acquisition since
the Parish Field in 1810.
Having leased the
ground since 1927,
Council has bought the
freehold from the Dunkley family, who have supported village cricket over many
years. Council would like to formally thank them for their support and for
agreeing to sell the ground to the Parish. The Parish is also especially grateful
to Roger Carrier for all his help in making this happen. The Cricket Club, who
has maintained the ground so beautifully over the years, can now go ahead with
their plans for the new Cricket Pavilion, and expand further the opportunities for
youth and adult cricket in Westfield.
Some of the fingerposts were cleaned and repaired, and some of the road signs
had graffiti removed from them. Repairs and cleaning have already been
scheduled for some of the other street furniture in the parish.
We received applications from three excellent candidates who wished to be
Councillors. Patrick Edwards was co-opted as Councillor for the Westfield Ward.
Patrick will be familiar to many residents, as he is already heavily involved with
many community events, and we look forward to working with him as Councillor.
Window on Westfield
Council discussed a request to plant more bulbs along Main Road in the
autumn, as many of the bulbs have died, mainly due to animals and traffic
pollution. Council agreed to do so and have set a maximum budget for the
project, and it was agreed use native species where possible. Volunteers will
be needed to plant the bulbs, with the aim of planting them in August/
September. If you would like to help then please contact the Clerk, Kate
Darbyshire Tel: 01424 756 973 or e-mail: westfieldcouncil@gmail.com
Councillors discussed the results of the on-line survey about the telephone
box on Churchfield. 143 responses were received, which Councillors agreed
was a positive response. Of the 5 options given, the most popular were the
museum of Westfield with 32.4% of votes and a book exchange with 22.5% of
votes. (Full details of the survey will be available on the village website.10
people have volunteered to help with the project. Cllr Tim Hills volunteered to
lead the volunteer group. Council will need to set a budget for the project once
more information is available. If you would like to help with the project, then
please contact Tim: 07832 122 557
Council agreed to purchase a new dog waste bin to be placed on the grass
area of Churchfield, opposite the entrance to Whiteland Wood. This is
following complaints about dog waste in the area, and people using the bin in
the play area for dog waste. Permission has already been granted by Optivo
(formerly Amicus) to place a bin there, and quotes are currently being sought.
April
We are continuing to experience problems with vehicles parking on the grass
verge at the top of Workhouse Lane, especially at school drop off/pick up
times. It is causing damage to the grass and any bulbs trying to grow there.
Parking here blocks the sight lines for vehicles at the junction, which is already
a dangerous junction. Council agreed to erect some chestnut posts at the top
of Workhouse Lane to prevent vehicles parking there. Cllr Tim Hills will be
arranging for the work to be carried out once the required licence has been
received from East Sussex Highways. If you witness cars parked or driving
dangerously in the village you can report them
http://www.operationcrackdown.org/ You will need a photo and it should show
the registration number. The Police can then contact the driver and take
appropriate action.
Council discussed the possibility of implementing a ‘No Cold Calling’ Zone in
Westfield, with the help of Rother Neighbourhood Watch. This would help
prevent unsolicited doorstep sales of goods or services. Residents are
encouraged to display a sign, on the reverse of which are instructions for
dealing with unsolicited traders. If you would like to see a No Cold Calling
Zone, then please sign the petition: https://www.change.org/p/westfield-parishcouncil-implement-a-no-cold-calling-zone-in-westfield
Window on Westfield
Council received confirmation that Rother District Council (RDC) will support
urban grass cutting for one year only, following the reduction from 6 urban
grass cuts to 2 provided by East Sussex Highways. The cost will be met from
their reserves. RDC will cover the cost this year, but local councils will need to
decide what levels of grass cutting they want for 2019/20 and will need to
determine how to meet the cost of this. Council have made provision in this
year’s budget for an additional urban grass cut, as they did last year.
Other News
Tennis Coaching
Following the success of last year, we are delighted to announce that Louis
from 6 love Tennis Coaching has returned to Westfield for this year’s junior
coaching sessions on Mondays, 5-6pm. They will continue until October half
term (except on bank holidays and school holidays). This year primary and
senior school children can attend, and Louis will tailor the coaching to meet
everyone's skill levels. You can just turn up and pay £5 for a pay and play
session. The sessions have already proven very popular again this year!
Poppy display
As you may already be aware, this year the Council are organising a large
poppy display on Churchfield, to commemorate 100 years since the end of
World War I. Council are inviting groups and individuals to make poppies to
be displayed in November. They can be made out of anything but will need to
be able to withstand the elements, and you will need to think how they will be
displayed. Some examples are on the website and Facebook page. Council
will arrange collecting the poppies and the display, which will include use of
the trees. If you would like to make some poppies, or would like to help with
the display then please contact the Clerk, Kate Tel 01424 756 973 e-mail
westfieldcouncil@gmail.com
There will be a workshop in the coming months for people to come along and
make poppies and bring along those they have already made. Watch this
space!
Spring Village Tidy
for photo of bags, see front cover
Thank you to everyone who turned up on
such a beautiful day to help with the spring
tidy on the 21 st April. We had 45 volunteers of
all ages, who between them collected 27
bags of rubbish. We also separated out all
the plastic bottles which were sent off for recycling.
The next tidy will take place in October (date to be
confirmed). We hope to see you there.
Volunteer Awards
This year the certificates went to:
Ian Taylor – Chairman of the Cricket Club
In recognition of Ian’s dedication and support of the
Cricket Club and his continued efforts with the exciting
new pavilion project. This award however is
particularly for his efforts with developing the youth
team, junior coaching and working with the school to
encourage children to take up cricket as a sport.
Window on Westfield
Dionne Homewood – Westfield Village Rocks
This is a new initiative that Dionne started, and she
continues to manage the FaceBook page and paint
hundreds of rocks. The idea is that people decorate rocks
which they hide around the village, which are then found
and re-hidden. The project has really sparked people’s
imaginations and has encouraged residents to get out and
about in the village and has proven to be a real success.
Jon & Gill Attewell – Westfield Football Club
This certificate was presented in recognition of their
dedication to the club over several years. Jon is
groundsman, tea lady, team driver, handyman and
away supporter. Gill is the Club’s Secretary and
Treasurer. Both have been actively involved with the
club since 2009 and have been instrumental in the
smooth running of the Football Club.
The Rose Bowl
Since 2005 the Rose Bowl is given each year to mark dedication and
community spirit shown by an individual volunteer over many years, which
brings a community benefit to the residents of Westfield.
Richard Milward – Westfield Christmas Lights
Richard has been involved for many years
with the Christmas Lights which now seem
to be world famous. He has been
instrumental in organising the collections for
St Michael’s Hospice, which raises
thousands of pounds every year. Last year
the lights raised a fantastic £10,385.29.
Richard has now stepped down from
organising the collections, and we wish him
well, but would like to thank him for
everything that he has done over the years.
