As a Provincetown native, it is an honor to serve as the
President of the Board of Trustees of the Cape Cod Pilgrim
Memorial Association (CPMA), which oversees the Pilgrim
Monument and Provincetown Museum (PMPM). After
spending 12 years owning and operating a business in Boston,
I came home to my roots, bought businesses in town, and
assumed the role as board president to create a new dynamic
for the organization.
The CPMA is the Cape’s oldest nonprofit organization. It
was established to commemorate the important moment
in American history when the Mayflower Pilgrims, fleeing
religious persecution in their homeland, arrived first in
Provincetown where they signed the Mayflower Compact,
regarded as the first governing document in the New World.
The Pilgrim Monument still stands as a symbol of freedom
in a town where tolerance and acceptance is heralded. In
2017, the Board of Trustees, under the new leadership of
Executive Director Dr. K. David Weidner and team, streamlined
and updated operations, added many new programs for our
visitors, provided an open and transparent process in the
development of the Bradford Access funicular project, agreed
to take over Provincetown 400 planning, and strengthened our
ties to the local community.
I want to thank our community sponsors and donors for
supporting the PMPM over the past year. A special thank
you to Seamen’s Bank, a longtime community partner who
is making it possible for us to provide this annual report. Our
organization is strong and is in excellent fiscal health. We are
looking forward to continued growth and development of in
the future.
(Dr. K. David Weidner became the PMPM new
Executive Director in January 2017, and has
overseen significant growth and development
of the facility, its staff, and its programs.)
I am thankful that I have been given the
opportunity to be the custodian of this
historical landmark that continues to
welcome pilgrims from near and far every
day. The spectacular location and the stroll
up the majestic structure with the 360-degree
view of Cape Cod and Provincetown remind
me daily of the importance of the mission of
the Cape Cod Memorial Association.
In 2017, we expanded programming at the
PMPM from six events in 2016 to 47 events
that served our visitors and the community
of Provincetown, an effort that will continue
in 2018. In 2017, the PMPM also assumed
responsibility for Provincetown 400, the
organization created to commemorate the
landing of the Mayflower Pilgrims and signing
of the Mayflower Compact. As we plan ahead
for the 400th anniversary, we will be adding
new activities and programming for this
important historic milestone.
The PMPM conducted two educational
symposiums that brought together members
of the local community to discuss the
evolution of the relationship between the
Mayflower Pilgrims and native Wampanoag
Indians. We partnered with Linda Coombs,
program director of the Aquinnah Cultural
Center, whose mission is to preserve,
interpret, and document the Aquinnah
Wampanoag self-defined history, culture, and
contributions past, present and future. The
symposiums coincided with two professional
development workshops held with educators
from the Provincetown public schools. These
educational programs will be continued in
2018 and beyond, as education is integral to
the mission of the PMPM.
Improving our technology, research, and
infrastructure and professionalizing our staff
were additional priorities for the 2017 season
and will be ongoing projects as we look to
the future needs for our property and for our
programming. One of the most significant
projects that we launched in 2017 was the
Bradford Access Project, to build a funicular
to bring visitors from Bradford Street by tram
up to our location at High Pole Hill. The first
phase of the project was conducted in the
fall of 2017, where we held multiple public
community forums to gather feedback and
input about the project that will connect the
PMPM to the central part of Provincetown.
Our work continues on the Bradford Access
project as we move forward toward final
planning and construction phases in 2018.
We are excited about some of our new
programming for 2018 including a chamber
music series, PMPM presents Chamber Music
For the Outer Cape, that will ensure that
chamber music is a vital part of life in our
communities, and establishes Provincetown
as a regional chamber music center. Our
new exhibition spotlighting the artistic and
cultural contributions of Provincetown’s Del
Deo family truly speaks to our mission as
does our newest exhibit, The Hat Sisters,
discussing the lives of Tim O’Connor and the
late John Michael Gray.
In 2017, our success at the PMPM would not
have been possible without the support of
our sponsors and donors, and we are truly
grateful as we continue to grow and serve
the community. Our museum is in need of
substantial capital improvements and we will
begin a new development campaign to fund
the work in the future.
The changes over the past year come with
some challenges, but we are all moving
toward the same goal of preserving the
important historic landmark, improving our
events and programming, and connecting the
PMPM to our neighbors and the world.
In 2017, the Pilgrim Monument and
Provincetown Museum was filled with new
events, new engagement with the community,
and new educational programs. For the
first time in years, the PMPM was open in
December and hosted a New Year’s Day
celebration to coincide with First Light
Weekend. Overall, the PMPM drew in 7,000
additional visitors through new initiatives that
were created to deepen the connection of the
organization to the community.
Project
A Message from the Board of Trustees
For too long, the Pilgrim Monument has
been disconnected from the town and cut
off from Provincetown’s residents, visitors
and businesses. It seems impossible to
hide a 252-foot granite tower, but we have.
We want to fix that.
The impenetrable hill on which we sit
acts as a visual and a physical barrier
to connecting the town with the Pilgrim
Monument and Provincetown Museum
(PMPM). It extinguishes what would
otherwise be a powerful historical
linkage between the Bas Relief that
commemorates the Pilgrims’ signing of
the Mayflower Compact, the Monument
that honors their first landing, and the
Museum that tells Provincetown’s story
as an accepting and tolerant place that
has welcomed pilgrims of all kinds for
centuries.
Our visitors are an important economic
lifeblood for our community. Whether
they arrive by car, by boat, by foot or by
bicycle, the questions we all hear as they
explore our town are, “What is that tower
up on the hill?” and “How do you get
there?” The PMPM Board of Trustees has
decided that it’s time to help our visitors
answer that question. We want to make it
easier for them to get to us and to more
fully experience the very special historical
connection our town has to the birth of our
nation.
Improving accessibility is critical to
making the connection between PMPM
and Provincetown’s residents and visitors,
and we have been thinking about it for
a long time. That’s why we are planning
on constructing a funicular, or inclined
elevator, laid on a track on a narrow,
landscaped strip, which will ascend from
the Monument’s property immediately next
to the Bas Relief Park up to the PMPM
campus. The funicular will complement
the town’s plans to restore the Bas Relief
Park.
We have an opportunity to improve
accessibility to an important national
monument for all - the young, the elderly
and those needing special assistance.
With improved accessibility, we are better
positioned to enrich the experience of our
visitors, providing them with an opportunity
to learn about what makes our town so
special. In 2017, we laid the groundwork for
the Bradford Access project by engaging
engineering and design professionals,
held a series of public forums to hear
from the local community, and created
a transparent process that will continue
through the project which is expected to
break ground in 2018 and be completed
in 2019, in time for the 2020
commemorative year noting the
400th anniversary of the landing
of The Mayflower Pilgrims in
Provincetown harbor.
In an effort to support the
financial expenditures of the
Bradford Access Project, it is
planned that the PMPM will
seek funding from the MA
Cultural Facilities Fund during
2018. If successful at the grant
application process, grant funds
from MA Cultural will support
our existing engineering and
architectural work.
In 2017, the Kay Lester Technology and Education Fund
was established through a $10,000 donation from former
Provincetown educator Katherine “Kay” Lester. A life-long
educator, Ms. Lester taught school in Provincetown from
1966 – 1967, then taught at Nauset Public schools from
1968 - 1985. She wanted to create a lasting legacy for
teachers, students, and life-long learners at the Pilgrim
Monument and Provincetown Museum. The funds will be
used to support educational and technology initiatives. Miss
Lester passed away in May 2018.
Hand in H and
All one has to do is look out across
Provincetown Harbor from the base of the
Pilgrim Monument to capture the beauty
of our natural environment. Imagine
what the Mayflower Pilgrims saw when
they found the New World, a sense of
excitement, adventure, and the future.
In some sense, the Cape Cod Pilgrim
Memorial Association is facing those same
emotions as an organization. We are over
100 years old and still we face excitement,
adventure and the future. We are at
a crossroads organizationally. We are
healthy financially as this annual report
illustrates, but we cannot move forward to
the future without growth, challenge, and
engagement.
Our Bradford Access Project, which
hopefully will become a reality in 2018-
2019, will help us provide a new front
door to our Monument and Museum, with
an ADA compliant vertical lift elevator
from the base of Bradford Street to the
Pilgrim Monument. This new front door
will be a welcome sign to our visitors that
we are open and receiving. However, the
new front door is only one aspect of our
opportunity. We need to embrace our
donors, our visitors, and our patrons. We
need to develop new sponsorships to
help share the message and vision of the
Pilgrim Monument.
As you see these two gentlemen, walking
hand in hand at the Base of the Pilgrim
Monument, I ask you, as a member and
perhaps a potential donor, to link hands,
and join us in building the Monument —
climbing to the top — holding hands and
supporting a place of diversity, culture,
arts, education, and justice.
The Cape Cod Pilgrim Memorial
Association, founded in 1892, is the oldest
non-profit on Cape Cod and its mission
is to commemorate the history of the
Mayflower Pilgrims, to collect, preserve,
interpret historical and exhibit material
depicting important Provincetown events,
and to maintain the Pilgrim Monument,
buildings and lands to accommodate its
libraries and collections.
We need to join hands, like the Apache
Helicopter Captains in the picture,
Vincent Franchino and Daniel Hall, who
were the first to marry in the Chapel
of West Point as active-duty service
personnel. They protect the freedoms
that our country holds so dear, not unlike
our efforts to protect and maintain the
Pilgrim Monument. We need to grow
and develop so that we can continue to
welcome pilgrims of all kinds to our town
and our community. We look forward
to celebrating the past and building a
strong future. I welcome you to join our
development efforts to protect and grow
our investment for generations to come.
