WOOD PROCESSING

The Kosovo wood-processing industry is a leader in the production of hotel, restaurant and café (HoReCa) interiors, kitchens,

kitchen cabinets, bedroom furniture, chairs, desks, doors and windows. In particular, products such as kitchens, chairs, bedroom

furniture and tables have the most potential in export markets. There is visible demand in the Kosovo market for interior design,

custom-made closets and installations. This potential also includes hotel and restaurant interior renovations in the local and

regional markets.

Kosovo wood-furniture manufacturers have taken big leaps in recent years. Product quality and range have increased, leading

to expansion into export markets. Kosovo furniture manufacturers and wood processors provide furniture products to export

markets in Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, as well as in regional markets in the Western Balkans.

Current wood-sector sales are considerable. The annual value of furniture and other wood products ranges from €100 million to

€120 million (Kosovo Ministry of Finance, 2014), including indirect effects, resulting in a GDP share of 2.4 to 3 percent for the wood

industry. The main types of wood utilized in Kosovo are beech, oak, pine and other solid wood. Several Kosovo products are also

sold on the internet through Amazon and Cleveroo in Europe under the name Shwarzwald Massiveholz, a brand created for wood

products from Kosovo.

Export-oriented activities within the wood-processing sector have intensified in the last five years. After 2010, the woodprocessing

industry became more export oriented, and industry exports, based on USAID EMPOWER Private Sector reports,

accounted for approximately €10 million (Increase of Competitiveness and Export Promotion, 2018). While Kosovo wood

processors have good buyers primarily in Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Macedonia and Albania, over 80 percent of the

sector's sales are local. Over the last few years, the most exported wood products from Kosovo were kitchens, kitchen cabinets,

chairs, staircases and bedroom furniture. This trend is ongoing.

There are investment opportunities in several wood-processing cycles. There is great potential in the wood-processing sector

for doors, windows and various types of furniture products. Likewise, due to the extensive experience and know-how among

wood-processing companies, the Kosovo wood-processing industry is positioned particularly well for the production of

handmade luxury products.

There is potential for the successful development of the Kosovo wood-processing sector. Improved infrastructure within the

country, including a good road network and reasonable associated transport costs, are advantageous for the development of the

wood-processing sector. Kosovo distribution network shipments can be delivered by truck to any location in Europe within 48

hours at an affordable price (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2014).

Apparel

Many companies are engaged in the apparel sector. There are six apparel sub-sectors in Kosovo: work uniforms, sportswear,

jeans, bridal dresses, underwear and footwear. In 2014, there were 522 apparel manufacturers registered with the Kosovo

Business Registration Agency (KBRA), and this number has increased to 860, of which 200 have been identified by the USAID

EMPOWER Private Sector project (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2014).

Textile clothing dominates the structure of apparel production. At the sector level, 80 percent of apparel manufacturing in

Kosovo is for textile clothing, while the remaining 20 percent is in footwear and leather. Leather manufacturing has recently

experienced strong growth. The micro-scale nature of textile companies implies that they operate almost exclusively for the

domestic market and are mostly oriented toward special demand markets.

The sector offers key advantages. There is local know-how and a cost-effective workforce, as well as a friendly investment and

business environment.

Significant growth of exports in this sector has been recorded. Textile exports increased by 15 percent in 2014, compared to

2013, while imports have increased by 1 percent over the same period. In 2015, footwear exports increased by 70 percent

compared to 2014, while they increased by 173 percent in 2014 compared to 2013 (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2015).

There is considerable potential for exports. The apparel industry has the potential to substitute imports (over €200 million in

annual imports) and increase exports, potentially creating nearly 10,000 new jobs (USAID, 2015). USAID estimates that exports

could reach between €55 million and €65 million, contingent on re-establishing previous trade contacts.

The apparel sector in Kosovo has enormous potential for exports, especially in the fields of outsourcing (cutting, sewing and

packaging) and private labels (entire manufacturing of foreign brands). To date, six companies in this sector regularly export and

most also manufacture for foreign brands, including Max Mara, Salvatore Ferragamo, the Bridge, Network, Baymen, Ikiler, Keep

Style and HAVEP. Products exported from Kosovo to European Union countries include women's, men's and children's shoes;

women's, men's and children's sweaters; blankets; work uniforms; trousers; jeans; jackets and socks.

Apparel Retailers. Many small textile companies sell standardized apparel and uniforms in the local market and in the highly

fragmented neighboring markets. A large number of companies involved in the bridal sub-sector export their products

throughout the region. A number of fashion designers for women's apparel sell through their ateliers and showrooms in Kosovo's

major cities. Some of these designers have been successful outside of Kosovo as well. This segment of the market displays

considerable growth potential, including the potential demand for “cutting, sewing and packaging” operations in Kosovo.

ENERGY

Kosovo intends to generate 25 percent of its total electric power consumption through renewable energy sources. The focus of the USAID

EMPOWER Private Sector project in the energy sector includes (i) producers of renewable energy sources, including biomass and solar energy; (ii)

manufacturers of building materials and energy-efficient elements; and (iii) recyclers. According to an assessment of private-sector energy clusters

carried out by the USAID EMPOWER Private Sector project, the overall market for the aforementioned focal points in 2016 was €104 million: €32

million (31 percent) was domestically produced, while €72 million (69 percent) was imported.

Biomass has significant opportunities to replace imports, with increased domestic production and job creation. The overall market value of the

wood biomass cluster (stoves/boilers, briquette and pellet) for 2017 was €30 million, of which €18.5 million was imported and €11.2 million was

produced domestically. The total value of pellets, including imports and those domestically produced, increased from €2.46 million in 2014 to €18.76

million in 2017—an increase of more than 660 percent (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2018). The increase in pellet consumption during this

period, which amounted to 100,000 tons, highlights Kosovo as the fastest-growing market for pellets in Europe. In 2017, a local biomass producer

was certified with the ENPlus Standard, an international recognition of high-quality wood biomass products.

There is increased demand for energy-efficient products. With regard to energy efficiency in Kosovo, the key actors include manufacturers of

insulation materials, as well as manufacturers of thermal-technical equipment focused on heating-cooling and ventilation. The total market value of

energy efficiency clusters (paints, lacquers, facades, fiberglass mesh and Styrofoam) for 2016 was €61.8 million, of which €40.8 million was

imported and €21 million was produced domestically. The import of paints, lacquers and facades has steadily increased over time, including a 7.8

percent increase in 2016 compared to 2015. Given the value of imports at €33.16 million for these products in 2016, there is a good market

opportunity to substitute imports with local products. On the contrary, the domestic production of Styrofoam for 2016 covered 81 percent of the

market at €10.73 million out of a total market value of €13.12 million (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2018).

With an average of 285 sunny days and over 2,000 hours of sun per year, Kosovo has great solar energy potential (PV Magazine International,

2017)—even higher than that of Germany. As one of the most abundant sources of renewable energy, solar power is a promising source for Kosovo

too, as highlighted by the establishment of the country's first solar panel manufacturer and the formation of a number of solar panel installation

companies. More than 20,100 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels were produced locally in 2016 and 2017. In 2017, local production of PV solar panels

increased by 923 percent, amounting to €2.16 million in value or 72 percent of the total market. PV installations have also increased substantially:

2.454 MW were installed in 2017 compared to 0.236 MW installed in 2014. Total capacity installed between 2014 and 2017 is 4.52 MW, suggesting an

overall increase in demand for PV installations (USAID EMPOWER Private Sector, 2018). In addition, companies are currently installing 32.4 MW of

wind power facilities in Kosovo, which will be located in wind park “KITKA,” in addition to 1.35 MW already installed in Golesh.

Recycling. Approximately 580,000 tons of waste (0.9 kg/day, per capita) are generated in Kosovo, of which 72 percent (420,000 tons) is collected.

More than 85 percent of the collected waste is sent to landfills (Kosovo Environmental Protection Agency, 2018). In 2017, 700 tons of flat glass waste

were recycled by a company that produces glass mosaic tiles. The total market for glass mosaic tiles steadily increased between 2014 and 2016, with

an overall value of €442,000 in 2016. More than 63 percent of this was produced domestically. Granules and regranules produced from the plastic

recycling process had a total market value of €21.30 million in 2016, of which 11.5 percent was domestically produced. This is compared to 2014's

value of €17.05 million, of which only 10 percent was domestically produced (USAID Empower Private Sector, 2018).

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY

The ICT sector in Kosovo has grown steadily in recent years. There are close to 200 active ICT companies with about 2,000

employees (USAID, 2015). Small- and medium-sized enterprises mainly develop software products and provide software

services. Other businesses provide products or services related to telecommunications, programming, software and mobile

testing, advertising, system architecture, databases, maintenance and support, application development and call center services,

among other ICT activities.

The ICT sector primarily targets the domestic sector, with significant impact on foreign markets also. The ICT sector provides

services to the domestic sector, including to government, finance and telecommunications clients. Several major domestic

sectors, including manufacturing, transportation, mobile communications, education and health care companies, are increasing

their demand for ICT solutions and software for enterprise resource management and web design.

Successful cases of ICT service exports are abundant. More than 65 percent of companies in the ICT sector in Kosovo cater to

international clients (Kosovo Ministry of Trade and Industry, 2013). The main competitive advantages Kosovo ICT companies have

in international markets are price, quality and technical know-how. Kosovo ICT companies now export software development

services, including subcontracting business processes. Export markets include Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

There are significant growth opportunities in the ICT sector. ICT costs per capita in Kosovo are estimated to be only half of the

regional average. Kosovo's large youth population and generally strong English language skills are considered to be important

factors in this sector's growth. Diaspora links also enable the expansion of market linkages in foreign markets. There is a possibility

to improve cooperation between businesses and ICT educational programs to ensure the necessary skills.

There is growing demand from European Union buyers for subcontracted business processes, software development and

database management. There is also growing demand for the development of software applications. Existing ICT companies are

already developing applications for smartphones and tablets, including web design. There are also opportunities to export

communications products and services to the entertainment and media industries, including film and other.

FOOD AND BEVERAGE PROCESSING

The food sector in Kosovo has made significant improvements in recent years. The food processing and packaging sector primarily

supplies the domestic market. Significant substitution of imports has occurred in recent years, partly due to the establishment of a number

of strong domestic brands. Likewise, there is an increase in demand from domestic retailers for processed and packaged meat, dairy and

vegetable products.

Progress in the food sector is evident in the food-processing industry. Worth mentioning are processed fruit and vegetable products,

fruit juices and smoothies, pasteurized products and frozen vegetables. These products are sold in the domestic market and are

significantly affecting the substitution of imports, while also increasing GDP.

There are opportunities to expand sales through business links established by local Kosovars with food processors and retail chains in

Western Europe, particularly in Switzerland and Germany. The best example of this is food processors' response to the demand for addedvalue

milk products.

Primary agricultural production has increased, with room for further growth. Fruit exports increased from €500,000 in 2010 to €1.6

million in 2014. Based on sector estimates, Kosovo possesses great capacity for future growth in the cultivation of forest fruits, non-wood

food products, medicinal and aromatic herbs and wine (Kosovo Investment and Enterprise Support Agency, 2015; USAID, 2015).

Forest fruits, non-wood products and aromatic and medicinal plants. Active market players in this segment point to the expansion of

sales opportunities in domestic and export markets for these products, especially raspberries (Germany), mushrooms (Italy) and

medicinal and aromatic plants. Domestic food processing companies are increasingly obtaining quality standards and safety

certifications.

There is growth potential especially for horticulture, livestock, dairy products, non-wood products and grapes. It is estimated that

increasing per capita consumption in local and regional markets for such products is likely to create continued business opportunities in

the coming years.

The vegetable and grain sectors have the greatest potential for agricultural growth. According to a number of studies, 105 crops are

positioned for significant growth in Kosovo (Kosovo Investment and Enterprise Support Agency, 2015). Ten major agricultural crops

(including fruits and vegetables) can be cultivated based on different assessment factors (Kosovo Investment and Enterprise Support

Agency, 2015).

Kosovo possesses the ideal conditions for grape cultivation for wine. Kosovo is known for its considerable acreage under vineyards,

especially in its production of Amselfelder wine for sale in Germany. It is estimated that Kosovo has more than 200 sunny days per year.

These climatic conditions, which help ripen grapes, are also present in some of the most well-known wine-producing regions in the world

(Kosovo Investment and Enterprise Support Agency, 2015). Such advantages create very suitable conditions for quality wine production

in Kosovo.
