Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and
members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ
Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to
become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling
in which God lives by his Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)
FROM THE PASTOR
WHAT IS YOUR NEXT STEP?
While committing one's life to Jesus and becoming a Christian is a decision that can take place in a
moment, or over a short span of time, living as a Christian Disciple who actively follows Jesus is a continual
process.
Discipleship is what happens when we get serious about putting our Christian faith into action and living a
life that draws near to Christ and obeys Christ. The primary way we "do discipleship" is through the
Christian Spiritual Disciplines.
One of the most basic Spiritual Disciplines is worshiping together on Sunday, the Lord's Day, because it
actually combines several Spiritual Disciplines into one experience. When we gather we pray, we worship,
we listen to God's Word, we receive the Sacraments, we can encourage one another and talk with one
another about our lives. Sunday morning worship brings together many of the Spiritual Disciplines in one
place, and since the beginning of Christianity, it has been the most basic Spiritual Discipline or Spiritual
Practice of Christians.
But once we have a good habit of worship established, we should be asking, what is the next step?
After corporate worship services the most important spiritual practices are probably personal/family
devotions at home on the one hand, and small group ministries on the other.
Praying and reading Scripture at home, praying with our families, is an important way that we seek to stay
connected to God throughout the weeks between Sundays. It is an important part of handing off the faith
to the next generation.
Joining a small group such as a Sunday School Class or a Bible Study or Book Study is important because it
allows us to get to know our fellow church members in a way that is really difficult during Sunday Services.
In small groups we can study Scripture and Christian teaching more closely; we can share more of our own
stories and prayer requests; we can ask hard questions and struggle together with our small group in
seeking answers that go beyond the surface level.
Worship, Devotions, and Small Groups help us grow in our faith, but they also provide the spiritual fuel
and encouragement we need to then turn outward and engage in acts of Service and Charity to others,
sharing with those in need, inviting newcomers to Christ's Church, seeking to be agents of love and
positive change in our community.
Regular habits and disciplines of Worship, Devotions, Small Groups, and Outreach...
What is your next step?
May the Lord Jesus Christ bless and keep you+
Rev. Daniel
WHAT’S HAPPENING
WHAT’S HAPPENING
On Sunday, July 29th during our 5th Sunday
Potluck, we will have a Congregational
Conversation centered around the Five Practices
of Fruitful Congregations. Below is some
information on the book and the practices it
outlines to have a quality ministry.
People know that the mission of the church is to make disciples
of Jesus Christ, but they are seeking to understand how to fit
this larger mission into their communities of faith in a practical
way. These practices—Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship,
Intentional Faith Development, Risk-Taking Mission and Service,
and Extravagant Generosity—are so critical to a congregation’s
purpose that failure to perform them in exemplary ways results
in diminishing the church’s mission. The evocative words used
to express these qualities are irresistible because they move us
from abstract intentions to practical and personal directions for
ministry. Once our mission becomes practical and personal, it
becomes memorable and achievable.
This book is designed to challenge leaders in holding a mirror to their own ministries to ask the
questions, “How are we doing in practicing these qualities of ministry in our worship, music
ministries, serving teams, study and support groups, mentoring programs, and leadership teams?
How are we doing in our personal discipleship in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and the spaces
where we engage friends and those we do not know?” The task of learning, deepening, repeating,
and extending these practices should drive conversations about the work of the church, guide
ministry teams, and shape planning and leadership training.

-Give Thanks Always-
Thank you to the 30 plus youth that volunteered to help with Vacation Bible School. What a
great group of high school and middle school youth! They led the children by example and
gave 100% to the children.
Thank you to the adult volunteers that worked VBS. We had such a devoted group of
parents, grandparents, CHASE staff and others that made the week go smoothly and the
children happy with cool science experiments, creative and delicious snacks, keepsake craft
projects, fun games, music that kept them dancing & singing and engaging bible stories.
A special thank you to Debra Davis, the Key Leader Team and the Church Council for
devoting their time and energy into guiding us as we plan for the future of our church, both
short-term and long-term.
Thank you to all who have signed up to provide meals to the Fiser Family. What a
wonderful thing our church family is doing to care for each other in a time of need.
SFUMC is a prayer partner for The Upper Room Prayer. Prayer calls are taken
once a month on a Wednesday evening from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the
church office. If you feel you would like to become a part of this important
ministry and volunteer to answer calls, please contact the church office.
FORGE and HIGH POINT
THE UNTOUCHABLES
A 4-WEEK SERIES ON JESUS
Jesus did and said some pretty controversial things
during His ministry, like the way he chose to spend time
with the kind of people other people usually avoided.
Whether it was sick people, different people, poor
people, or unlikeable people, Jesus surrounded Himself
with people others wouldn’t touch. In this 4-week series,
students will be challenged to see, serve,
embrace, and love others the way Jesus saw, served,
embraced, and loved them.
