Residents
fed up
over more
repair
delays for
Riccarton
street
• By Anan Zaki
RESIDENTS OF a flood-prone
Riccarton street are fed up at
repeated delays to have repairs
finished.
Bradshaw Tce residents have
to wait until 2021 to have repair
work finished on their street, 10
years after the city council first
told them it would be done.
The city council announced
rebuild plans for the street in
2010 and said work would be
completed in a year. The first
delays in 2011 were blamed on
the earthquake.
The second delay came in
2015. The city council started
some repairs in 2016 but left the
works unfinished. The latest
delay resulted from last week’s
Long Term Plan adoption.
When asked about the repeated
delays, the city council
did not provide a response.
The works in 2016 included
water mains repairs, resident
Tony Dale said. Temporary
re-sealing was done six months
ago, but the flooding issues
have persisted.
That’s a lot of hot shooting and the team
In hindsight maybe Whippy should have indicated in the prematch
Improvements for deadly intersections
• By Anan Zaki
MOTORISTS CAN look
forward to safety improvements
at three dangerous intersections
in Riccarton.
The city council has earmarked
funding for the intersections at
both ends of Clarence St and
intersection at Ilam, Middleton
and Riccarton Rds in its Long
Term Plan, which was adopted
last week.
The intersection at the
Riccarton Rd end will get a
$356,000 safety upgrade in
2020/21, and the Blenheim Rd
end will get safety improvements
worth $1.1 million in 2022/21.
The Ilam, Middleton and
Riccarton Rd intersection,
will get $1 million in safety
improvements over this year and
next year. A number of options,
including cycleways will be
considered. A detailed plan on
the upgrades is yet to be released.
City council transport
planning and delivery manager
Lynette Ellis said detailed
plans for the two Clarence St
intersections won’t be available
until closer to the expected
construction periods in 2020 and
2022.
“This intersection is part
of the Riccarton Rd upgrade
and identified as a high
priority intersection for safety
interventions and public
transport priority improvements.
“There are high traffic volumes
at this intersection with two
major arterial routes crossing
Number of injury-causing crashes at the intersections
Riccarton Rd: Two fatal, five
serious injuries and 11 minor
injuries between 2011 and
2016.
•Clarence St and Blenheim
injuries and 14 minor injuries
between 2011 and 2016.
•Ilam, Middleton and
Riccarton Rds: Between
2011 and 2016, there were
intersection, one serious
injury crashes.
COUNCIL
and the need to provide safe
crossing for all modes, especially
pedestrians,” Ms Ellis said.
The city council confirmed last
month that right turning arrows
from Riccarton Rd onto Clarence
St and Straven Rd would be part
of the Riccarton Rd upgrades.
“Right turn against oncoming
traffic is the main concern and
work is being undertaken to
identify the issues for all users as
well as safety concerns. Funding
is scheduled in 2022/2023
to allow the completion of a
corridor study of the Whiteleigh
Ave and Clarence St corridor to
ensure cost effective solutions are
undertaken for the intersection,”
Ms Ellis said.
The area has became more
congested due to population
growth in the area since the
earthquakes, Mrs Broughton
said.
The Ilam, Middleton and
Riccarton Rd intersection was
ranked as the fourth most
dangerous in the city by the
city council and New Zealand
Transport Agency. The Clarence
St, Straven Rd and Riccarton Rd
intersection was ranked as the
sixth and the Clarence St and
Blenheim Rd intersection was
ranked 10th.
New classrooms
for Hornby High
•From page 1
Some of the facilities that are
being replaced include prefabs
built 43 years ago, Mr Sutton
said.
“Other schools have of course
had new facilities built
in the past few years, but
we are the first secondary
school to have a whole
school redevelopment.”
Stage one of the rebuild
included classrooms
for “specialist learning”
spaces.
“There will be classes for
sciences, food technology, hard
materials classes, visual arts and
digital technology,” Mr Sutton
said. “It also houses our hauora
wellness areas, library, a cafe and
staff area.”
A new gymnasium will also be
opened next month. The facilities
are divided into two buildings.
“Visually it will appear as one
building but they are connected
by laneways,” Mr Sutton said.
When the full rebuild is complete
at the end of next year, the
school will be able to cater for 100
more students in addition to the
current roll of 700.
But the school master plan included
space for future expansion
of up to 1200 students to cater for
population growth, Mr Sutton
said. “Three more buildings will
be added in stage two and we’ve
master planned to have space for
two more buildings.”
Ministry of Education
head of education infrastructure
Kim Shannon
said the $26 million
Hornby High School
rebuild is part of the
$1.137 billion Christchurch
Schools Rebuild
Kim Shannon
programme, which will
rebuild or renew 115
schools by 2022.
“The CSR programme was
developed following the assessment
of over 200 schools in
Canterbury over two years for
earthquake strengthening needs,
weather tightness, modernisation
and what new infrastructure is
required.”
Temporary prefabs will be used
for classrooms until stage two is
complete.
An official opening ceremony
with special dignitaries will be
held on August 3.
Greater Christchurch Regeneration
Supermarket pork recalled
NEW WORLD Halswell is
recalling batches of its pork hock
metal contamination.
There have been no reports
of injury, but the Ministry for
who consumed the pork
and have health concerns to seek
medical advice.
The ministry said the batches
have a best before date of June 29
and 30 and were only sold at the
Halswell store.
The products were sold in clear
plastic trays with clear plastic
wrapping. Individual packaging
sizes varied as it depended on
the size of the meat.
Ministry spokeswoman
Helene Ambler said they were
currently investigating the
matter and could not provide
any information on how the
contamination may have
occurred. She referred queries to
Residents fed up with repair delays
HAD ENOUGH: Bradshaw St residents Tony Dale, Claire Mouat and Anne Dale are upset over
flooding issues in their street.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
•From page 1
He blamed the current surface
flooding issues on the repairs
being left unfinished.
The most recent flooding was
on June 20, when the city council
had to pump out water.
Mr Dale said he was disappointed
the city council did not
“front up” this time.
“The trouble is, they have
fronted up several times in the
past . . . then nothing has happened.
What’s the big secret?”
Mr Dale said he understood
other areas in the city needed
prioritising following the earthquakes,
but all he would like
is to see the promised work
completed.
“At the moment the street is
the way it was built 80 years ago.
The gutters on the streets are
breaking down. The new seal is
breaking up again.”
Resident Clare Mouat says the
streets in the area have had longterm
surface flooding issues due
to water run-off from Riccarton
Bush.
“Bradshaw Tce is aligned with
Rata St and we took in water
run-off from the bush. Rata St
have had their repairs done and
all their issues are now good,”
Mrs Mouat said.
Riccarton Bush and Kilmarnock
Residents Association
chairman Tony Simons says
he did not understand the city
council’s “back to basics” budget,
as “basic work” on Bradshaw Tce
was deferred.
“I’m a bit mystified when
projects like this get put off when
we spend millions of dollars on
cycleways.”
Riccarton Ward city councillor
Vicki Buck said she did “not
recall all of the history” behind
delays at the street but believed
the earthquakes played a role in
the repairs being continuously
delayed.
“I wasn’t involved at the council
at the time [between 2010 and
2013]. But I’ve told staff that I
would really like to get the work
done this year.”
Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board deputy
chairwoman Helen Broughton
said repairing the cul-de-sac off
Straven Rd has been one of the
board’s “top priorities” and is
frustrated it has been deferred by
the city council.
“It should have gone through
earlier, it would have been best if
it was done this year,” she said.
Mrs Broughton said the delays
were not a sign that the board’s
input was not being heard.
marked, with four being in the
Halswell, Hornby and Riccarton
Wards. A level crossing is an
intersection where a railway line
crosses a road at the same level.
City council transport operations
manager Steffan Thomas
said the city council did not
know why the crossings were
incorrectly marked.
The city council has no plans to
investigate why the mistakes were
made.
“The correct markings are a
solid yellow line to the left of the
white centre line to indicate that
motorists should not overtake
approaching the level crossing.
The exact length depends on the
location,” he said.
The road rules state that double
yellow lines or a flush median
near a level crossing also indicated
no overtaking.
New Zealand Transport
Agency’s Traffic Control Devices
Manual published in 2012, said
that no overtaking road markings
needed to be a minimum
distance of 65m from the level
crossing.
NO PASSING: The south-east approach to the level crossing at
Annex Rd, Middleton is incorrectly marked as it does not have
no overtaking lines.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
The road user manual stated
that a driver must not pass or
attempt to pass another vehicle
moving in the same direction at
or within 60m of a level crossing.
The audit found that some level
crossing approaches in the city
did not have “no overtaking”
lines or the existing lines were
not 65m long.
Mr Thomas said the audit was
done throughout the first half of
the year.
“Staff identified 16 level
crossings out of 42 which had
overtaking lines that were not
100 per cent correct,” he said.
The audit was initiated by the
city council and it is not facing
penalties from the NZTA for the
wrong markings, Mr Thomas
said.
crossing was missing no
overtaking lines. The Parker St
level crossing in Islington also
lacked no overtaking lines from
the southern approach to the
railway tracks.
Painting the road markings
across the city is estimated to
cost $10,000 and the city council
planned to make the corrections
by the end of the month.
Of the 16 level crossings that
were incorrectly marked, one
accident was reported at Kainga
Rd in the past five years, KiwiRail
said.
Templeton quarry battle: Bring it on
Templeton Residents
Association
chairman
Garry Kilday
reacts to the
results of the
Yaldhurst
monitoring
programme.
THE RESIDENTS of Templeton
will have heard or read about
the outcome of Environment
Canterbury’s dust monitoring
programme and will be feeling
some concern.
While this outcome is a travesty
for the people of Yaldhurst being
hurt by these ruthless corporates,
the outcome itself came as no
surprise to the no quarry subcommittee.
We had anticipated this event
and it does not change our submission
process whatsoever, in
actual fact we believe it may help.
I believe that the dust monitors
were not reliable, hence the
results from them can not be
relied upon.
Ownership of the monitors
themselves seems to be a grey area.
Some believe they are paid
for by the quarry companies,
so if this is the case they would
have first dibs at the so called
“raw data” which ECan has been
talking about for some time, and
PROBLEMATIC: Dust at Winstone Aggregates quarry in Yaldhurst.
all evidence from that point on
would be compromised.
If this is the case, the Canterbury
District Health Board
and ECan are acting on flawed
information.
And of course with the wettest
four months for years in
Canterbury, getting any reading
is amazing. What will it be like
in mid-summer in a north-west
gale? Due to some inaccuracies/
major concerns reported by the
Yaldhurst group we will be writing
to ECan strategy and planning
director Katherine Trought,
to take up her offer of organising
a meeting with the chief medical
officer Alistair Humphrey and
ECan to discuss the results.
PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN
The admission by a representative
of ECan that their inability to
monitor compliance at the first
and second community meeting
was confirmed at a recent meeting
with Ms Trought and ECan
chairman, Steve Lowndes. They
went as far as to say it is about
three years behind around all
compliance issues.
In addition to meeting with
ECan, we have also met with
Selwyn District Council regarding
its Long Term Plan quarry
regulatory requirement.
This was also extremely helpful
and has clarified a few more
points.
It is my belief that Fulton
Hogan may now put in its application
early to try and catch
us unaware, so for those who are
planning on putting in a submission,
please be ready.
The no quarry sub-committee
will not be changing anything in
our submission so with that in
mind, bring it on.
We will be re-extending an
invitation to Fulton Hogan to
attend a community meeting,
which it declined to attend earlier
in the year.
We believe that this is vital to
successful and transparent community
engagement.
We will advise you of the outcome.
Mr Holstein
Kia ora and thank you to
everyone who attended our
Open Evening on 15 May. We
trust you enjoyed your time
with us, learned more about our
school, and gained an insight
into Burnside High School. I am
grateful to the 250 volunteer
student guides who were proud
to showcase their school to you.
The Burnside High school ethos is expressed in our
vision, mission and values. We provide an excellent
learning environment that makes a positive difference to
people’s lives. We pride ourselves on being a successful
school that is highly regarded in the community for
its high-quality, values-based learning and specialist
facilities. We are a larger school with a community feel,
offering a wide range of opportunities in a safe, friendly
atmosphere, and with high standards and expectations
of ourselves and our students. We base our culture on a
vision of personal excellence and caring for others. Our
key values of Manaakitanga - being respectful, Mana
- having pride, and Rangatiratanga - striving to excel
guides the way that students and staff act, feel and think
about themselves and about others.
Burnside High School has an outstanding reputation for
its ability to ensure that students achieve very well. We
do this through our focus on providing a high-quality,
co-educational learning environment. We are delighted
that, over the next few years, there will be a major
redevelopment of our campus.
Our size and all the advantages that this brings is a point
of difference and is what makes this decile 8, state, coeducational
school special. The seven significant features
that make Burnside High School a leader of learning are,
in no particular order:
• We are a centre for academic excellence with an
emphasis on high-quality teaching practices and
outstanding achievement.
• We are co-educational and multi-cultural, reflecting the
social reality of our nation and our world, and allowing
young female and male students opportunities to
develop learning relationships based on absolute and
genuine respect and equality.
• Our roll of around 2,500 students enables us to
provide an extensive, diverse and specialised
curriculum that caters for and challenges students of
all abilities.
• We provide an exceptionally wide range of cocurricular
opportunities (music, drama, dance, clubs
and sports) for students to enjoy, learn new skills, to
make friends, take leadership roles, and achieve at a
high level.
• We are a caring school where students are known and
supported as individuals in a positive, inclusive and
well-resourced learning environment.
• We value effective relationships with parents/whanau
and the wider community to improve outcomes for
students.
• We are innovative and responsive to the evolving
nature of society through continuous and rigorous
review and evaluation of our systems, practices and
procedures.
These seven factors contribute to the obvious pride that
we all have in our school.
Burnside High School, in partnership with whanau, has
the proven ability to assist students develop the skills,
attributes, and attitudes to make a success of their lives
in the workplace, in the community, and as members of
supportive and loving families. I believe in, and am proud
of, Burnside High School; and feel privileged to be its
principal.
Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe me he maunga
Pursue excellence, and if you are to ever bow – let it only
be to a lofty mountain, Aoraki.
Phil Holstein,
Principal
Burnside High School Music Department
Term 2 has seen a remarkable number of impressive
achievements by our talented musicians on the national and
regional stage.
The Burnside High School Big Band and SMP Jazz Combos
embarked on a week-long tour of the North Island, performing
at the Manawatu Jazz Festival and the NZSM (Wellington)
Jazz Festival where they won a total of 19 separate awards,
including Best Big Band and Best Combo at each festival. An
outstanding achievement.
At the ARA Jazz Quest Combo Competition this success was
repeated with SMP Combo 1 won “Best Combo” and a further
five individual awards were won.
Dr Dave Lisik, Head of Jazz Theory and Composition at the
New Zealand School of Music writes: “What this doesn’t
illustrate, given that Burnside’s jazz groups routinely have
successful individuals and groups winning awards, is how
the Jazz Programme as a whole continues to improve. Huge
congratulations to everyone!”
At the regional NZCF Big Sing competition, Burnside’s choirs
were once again in the spotlight and received a number of
coveted awards:
Junior Performance Choir
• Outstanding Recital by a Junior Choir
Aurora Voices
• Outstanding performance of a composition with a Maori or
Pacifica text
• Outstanding performance of an Early Music composition
• Outstanding Recital by a Treble Choir
Bel Canto
• Outstanding Recital by a Girls’ Choir
Senior Chorale
• Outstanding performance of a New Zealand Composition
• Outstanding Recital by a Mixed Voice Choir
• University of Canterbury School of Music Award for
best performance of a New Zealand work at the Big Sing
Canterbury and West Coast competition 2018
Burnside entered a total of 13 groups in the annual NZCT
Chamber Music Contest this year, two of which were selected
for the district, and subsequently, the regional final: RAQS
(Hijiri Yamamoto, violin; Claudia Crosland, Alto Saxophone;
Lixin Zhang, piano) and The Rota Trio (Ashley Leng, violin;
Emica Taylor, flute; Tetsuya Yamada, piano). Maggie Ma (cello)
and Juliette Ma (violin), both Burnside students also featured
in the final as part of a composite school group.
RAQS were successful in winning the Southern Regional Final
overall, an outstanding achievement in this highly competitive
contest.
The Mendelssohn Trio (Lily Doak, Samantha Chiang and Cherry
Inazumi) won a KBB award at the District Final of the contest.
Ashburton Exchange
Just over 130 students travelled to Ashburton to compete
across seven sports and in 13 matches at the annual
Winter Sports Ashburton College Exchange. The Sports
Exchange has been a major and popular event on the
school calendar for many years. In the past over 200
students normally compete but this year the wetter
weather played havoc with the grounds forcing football
and rugby matches to be cancelled.
Hayden Cox (Boys Hockey)
Congratulations to Year 13 student Lixin Zhang, winner of last
year’s Wallace Piano Competition, on the release of his first CD
recording on the Rattle record label and for the stunning CD
launch concert he performed at The Piano Centre for Music
and the Arts.
Finally, congratulations to Keira Jonkers (Year 11) and Dylan
Jonkers (Year 9) for reaching the regional final of the
RockQuest competition with their bands “Better than Bacon”
and “Class Disruption”.
Term 3 sees the national final stages of all three competitions;
best wishes to all students and staff involved.
Andrea Maro (Aurora Voices)
Back left to right: Maddy Randall-Davis, David Petch,
Amy Boden, Liam Johnson
Front left to right: Nick Pitts, Devin Min, Felix Backhouse
(Individual Jazz Award Winners)
The stakes are always high playing for pride and the
coveted Ashburton - Burnside trophy. Ashburton College
snuck off with after a close battle winning 7 - 5. Burnside’s
strength this year was in hockey with both the boys and
girls teams winning convincingly 7-0 and 8-0 respectively.
Principal Phil Holstein took full responsibility for the loss
and offered to walk home from Ashburton!
It was a very successful exchange with both schools
continuing to build a strong relationship through sport.
The Hub recognised at property awards
THE HUB Hornby has won
top accolades at the recent New
Zealand Property Council
The shopping centre received
the award of excellence in the
best in retail category, to recognise
its transformation into a
mall of regional significance.
Judging criteria includes
economic and financial factors,
project innovation and
vision, design and construction,
owner and user satisfaction, and
sustainability/efficiency
of operation.
A group of
Michael
ago through
Shopping Centre
Investments Ltd.
SCIL chairman
Michael Keyse said the award
was a wonderful way to celebrate
the conclusion of its redevelopment.
“This was the culmination
of a period of long term
development which has seen the
transformation of a depleted
shopping centre to a mall of
regional significance to the
Christchurch environment and
influenced the establishment
of the adjacent and extended
Hornby retail precinct.”
Keyse said that together with
its private ownership, the Hub
Hornby had several unique
features, which set it apart from
other centres.
“The mall has a very strong
community focus and this is
highlighted by its involvement in
local charities, and the presentation
of interesting themes including
the recent success of a pet’s
night,” he said.
The centre has changed dramatically
since it first opened
in 1976. At that time, it was the
third major shopping complex
in the city and the first fully enclosed
and air-conditioned mall
in the South Island.
Since then, it has seen many
changes with major expansions
in the 1990s and most recently a
$75 million multi-stage expansion
that began in 2012 and was
completed earlier last year.
BUSY:
The Hub
Hornby
attracts
more than
130,000
shoppers
weekly
and
won top
accolades
at the
property
awards.
Today, more than 130,000 customers
visit the centre each week.
Keyse said the national award
recognised and affirmed The
Hub Hornby as one of a number
of new and exciting developments
that are now taking place
within Christchurch.
“The Hub Hornby is extremely
proud that its contribution, based
on self-help and local enterprise,
was the very first of these construction
initiatives.”
National choir final
beckons for Villa group
• By Anan Zaki
VILLA MARIA College choir
Con Brio has been selected for
The Big Sing national final.
The choir is made up of 52 girls
aged between 14 and 18 and will
fly to Wellington for the final
from August 30 to September 1.
The Big Sing is a national
group-singing competition for
secondary school
students.
Con Brio picked
up numerous accolades
at The Big
Sing Canterbury
regionals on June
Naomi
Hnat
7, but had to wait
until last week to
find out they were
selected to the
finals.
Villa Maria College choir director
Naomi Hnat said they are
a motivated group and “delightful”
to work with.
“In terms of goals for the finale,
I always tell the girls that putting
on a stunning performance
which genuinely moves an audience
is worth so much more than
a high mark from an adjudicator.
“We’re not aiming for a specific
prize – we just hope to be able
to put on some stunning performances
that captivate the hearts
and minds of those watching,”
Ms Hnat said.
They won outstanding performance
of a contemporary
art composition, outstanding
performance of a contemporary/
commercial composition and
outstanding recital performance
Challenge final.
In the semi-final last week
at Ashburton Borough School,
Chloe Hurst, Ethan Kirkpatrick,
Ben Bornholdt and James
McIver had to complete four
engineering problem-solving
activities.
The theme of the evening was
rock bands.
The pupils, competing under
the team name Techno Templeton,
scored 430 points, 10 points
ahead of their nearest rivals
Wakanui School.
“(Pupils were) very nervous
when the scores went black with
1min to go (and) very excited
after the drum roll and they
were announced,” deputy principal
Penny McCauley said.
The Epro8 Challenge is an
engineering problem-solving
competition held across the
Kendrew hits 58 in Hillmorton’s first win
• By Jacob Page
FILLED WITH emotion and
a hot-hand, Hillmorton High
School basketball captain Ihaia
Kendrew stepped up in a big
way.
The 17-year-old, motivated by
the imminent departure of his
coach, former Canterbury Rams
captain Marques Whippy, scored
58 points to lead his team to
their first win of the McDonald’s
Thomson Trophy secondary
school competition – a 91-83
victory over Burnside. Kendrew,
who lives in Halswell, broke two
competition records in the clash,
most points and most three
pointers made with 11.
“We spoke about needing to
play hard, with pride and passion
before the game,” Kendrew
said. “Marques has done a lot for
us and showed us how to be better
players and how to be men.”
Kendrew beat his previous
best tally of 43, while moving
his team to ninth overall after
knocking over eighth placed
Burnside.
Kendrew scored 23 points in
the first quarter but it wasn’t
until he nailed three consecutive
jump shots in the last two minutes
that the game was safe.
“Burnside came back at us, I
CANTERBURY
HALSWELL’S ALFRED Wong
used a little inside knowledge to
secure his first badminton triple
crown.
The 41-year-old, who was
unseeded in all events, defended
his singles title before claiming
the doubles and mixed doubles
crowns at the Canterbury Open,
beating many of the younger
players he coaches in the process.
Wong, who plays for the
Canterbury University
Badminton Club, came to
Christchurch from Malaysia
when he was 16. He said he had
won more than 20 open titles
during his lifetime in the sport
but this was the first time he had
won a triple crown.
The former Canterbury No 1
coaches four Canterbury teams,
including the under-17 and
division one Canterbury teams,
and said that aided his cause.
“I used a bit of inside
knowledge,” he said. “Knowing
certain players’ strengths and
weaknesses helped me a lot.
“Most of them had a laugh with
me about it afterwards,” he said.
“At 41, it wasn’t something that
I thought was possible because
SPORTS
Triple badminton crown
for Halswell 41-year-old
it was a demanding weekend
physically.
Wong said he had no intention
of trying to win all three events
but, after he won the singles, a
competitor had to pull out from
the doubles.
“One of the players got
injured on the Friday night so I
asked if I could fill in and they
(competition organisers) agreed,”
he said.
Wong, who finished second in
the World Masters Games over
40s tournament in Auckland last
year, said his body barely held up
playing 14 matches in two days.
After the singles on the Friday,
I had bad leg cramps and, after
winning the doubles on Saturday,
I was more interested in keeping
my body together for the mixed
double rather than thinking
about a triple crown,” he said.
“I was happy with two titles.
After claiming the singles,
Wong partnered with Jonathon
Smith to win the doubles and
then Yuri Minigawa to claim the
mixed doubles.
“To win a triple crown is not
something I expected to do at my
age but it ranks as one of my best
accomplishments,” he said.
Jenkins follows path to
US volleyball scholarship
• By Jacob Page
A TOUR of the Riccarton
High School gymnasium five
years ago put volleyballer Jade
Jenkins on a path to the United
States.
The 18-year-old, who lives
in Halswell, has committed to
a scholarship at Marshalltown
Community College in Iowa.
The New Zealand representative
and former national
under-19 captain said she was
excited by the prospect of a new
challenge.
“It was a bit of a surprise to
have it all confirmed but it’s an
exciting time.”
Jenkins described herself as “a
pretty hardcore netballer” when
she first started at Riccarton
High School, but that soon
changed.
“We were getting a tour of the
facilities on our first day and
I knew Riccarton was pretty
strong at volleyball so it was
something I was thinking about
giving a go.
“I was the tallest year 9 there
(1.79m) and when we walked
through the PE department a
teacher called Mary Edmondson
came over and said ‘you
must play volleyball’,” Jenkins
said.
Edmondson, a former New
Zealand volleyball captain, has
coached Jenkins ever since.
“She (Edmondson) has been
influential in my development
right up until this point,” she
said.
Ironically, it was the coach
of Riccarton High School’s
biggest rival, Burnside High,
who helped set up Jenkins with
scholarship offers.
“Sam Ryburn, the Burnside
High coach, helped me a lot
with the process and helped
make my application video,” she
said.
Jenkins has thrived in a
new position over the past 12
months.
She moved from middle
hitter to outside hitter, which
has allowed her to improve her
passing game.
“I moved there because (Riccarton
High) didn’t have many
US BOUND: Former Riccarton High School volleyballer Jade
options at that position, but I’ve
really enjoyed the differences in
that spot and I hope I’ll get to
stay there at Marshalltown.”
The Iowa’s school’s junior
college plays in the NCJAA
division one competition.
Marshalltown head volleyball
coach Justin Hoskins said he
was impressed with Jenkins’
versatile nature.
“Jade adds not only a lot
of talent to our line-up, but
also a lot of versatility and options
to play different systems,”
he says.
“She has experience playing
at a high level and will help add
some leadership to our young
team as well.”
Jenkins will head there before
the end of winter.
not a singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do’. All of us
are capable of making hard work a habit, in order to achieve to the best of
our ability.
On siting matters, the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch is investigating
sites which could be suitable for our new school and is actively considering
a number of options. We are excited about the future of Marian and are
hopeful for a decision soon.
MERCY CUP SPIRIT
Teams of Marian College students
competed in the Mercy Cup
Tournament in Timaru recently. The
annual winter event is held between six
Catholic schools in the region and each
take turns hosting. The schools send
their best football, hockey and netball
teams to compete and enjoy the spirit
of competition, collegiality and shared
Catholic special character and values.
WELLBEING TEAM
As winter settles in, the Marian
College Student Wellbeing Team has
been bringing sunshine and light into
the school.
The team includes students across all
year levels and is headed by senior
leaders Megan White and Mia Blyth.
“Every week two girls pair up – a
senior and junior student who might
not know each other – and come up
with a project drawn from the Hauora
model of wellbeing,” Megan explains.
“The topics are physical wellbeing,
mental and emotional, as well as social
and spiritual wellbeing.”
Projects include signing a pledge
t-shirt against bullying, stress-relieving
colouring in activities, crafts a ‘shout
out board’ where compliments are
shared and a performance by the ‘I am
Unbreakable’ world hip hop champion
dance crew (pictured).
WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING
We wanted a college that could meet the spiritual and cultural needs of our
girls. We liked the sense of community, that expects and models caring for
each other.
Marian offers a supportive and nurturing environment where our daughters
are known and not lost in the crowd.
BIG SING
Marian College’s talented senior choir Messa Di Voce performed in the Big Sing
- the secondary schools choral festival - at The Piano recently. Messa Di Voce
received an award for outstanding performance of a Māori song – Tīhore Mai.
At Marian our daughters have not only thrived academically, they’ve
received a well-rounded education with a strong understanding of
community and service.
SENIOR LIVING
The tree of LIFE
New research on Gingko
Biloba excites researchers!
For decades scientists believed brain
damage with age, after a stroke or injury
was irreversible and brain neurons could
not be repaired. In more recent times, new
research has shown that neurons can grow
back with the right conditions and that a
special extract of Gingko Biloba (EGb-761
or TEBONIN) has been clinically found to
assist in this. The implications for stroke
recovery are obvious, but researchers also
know many of us suffer from undetected
“micro-strokes” that over a period of time
slowly reduce
our cognitive
function.
TEBONIN
is prescribed
worldwide
as a natural
supportive agent
for a healthy brain
and cognitive
function.
It supports
healthy mental
performance,
concentration,
focus, alertness,
motor function
and to help with
many conditions
including tinnitus
(ringing and noise
in the ears), vertigo and normal balance.
TEBONIN improves micro-circulation
and helps the blood flow reach those
critical places it needs to get. It is a potent
anti-oxidant and makes the red blood
cells more pliable and capillary walls more
flexible.
TEBONIN is one of the most widely
studied and researched herbal products in
the world and is the only Ginkgo biloba
extract manufactured via a patented
multi-step extraction process. Each small
tablet contains a highly concentrated
50:1 extract to give you a therapeutic
clinical dose without having to take a large
amount of the herb. Of 25 Gingko biloba
products on the market, and tested by a
major medical journal, only TEBONIN
passed all five of the test requirements.
Ten brands didn’t meet any requirements
and the rest didn’t pass more than three
out of five requirements. TEBONIN is
considered the gold standard in Gingko.
TEBONIN has been trusted by millions
of consumers worldwide for over 30
years with more than 8,000,000 tablets
consumed each day.
The importance of
good blood pressure?
Blood Pressure is an
indicator of cardiovascular
as well as overall health.
Healthy blood flow is vital for
a healthy body as the blood
plasma transports nutrients,
hormones, metabolic waste,
oxygen and CO2 throughout
the body. An area in the brain
keeps check on blood flow
to ensure health of all cells
and the organs they make up.
If blood flow is reduced the
brain will try to normalise
blood flow by adjusting the
heart strength, frequency
(Pulse Rate) as well as the width of blood
vessels all via the central nervous system.
Over a period of time the blood pressure
may increase due to the deterioration of
blood flow and other factors. A higher B/P
is not ideal and is considered a major risk
factor for strokes, aneurysm, organ failure
and heart failure. Even moderate elevation
of B/P is considered a major reason for
shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain
our B/P in the normal range our overall
health will be improved. Systolic B/P (The
upper figure) is when the heart contracts
and pushes blood around the body. Ideally
at rest this should be between 100 to 120.
The diastolic B/P (The lower figure) is the
pressure in the arteries between beats and
ideally at rest this should be between 60
to 70.
how’s your blood pressure?
Keeping our blood pressure (B/P) in the normal range is a positive sign of good health. The higher the B/P above normal the more
likely we may suffer a stroke, aneurysm, organ failure or heart attack. Even moderate elevation of B/P can lead to shortened life
expectancy. Checking your B/P on a regular basis with our easy to use B/P monitors allows you to make changes to your lifestyle,
diet & nutrition when necessary.
cases high blood pressure is caused by
an increase in the resistance to blood
day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation
and musty smells. Moulds can produce
various allergic reactions and the
frail, elderly and very young are
especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete
Ltd is a locally owned and
operated firm. The team
understands the problems
caused by rising damp and are
there to help. They will come
HOME & HEATING
Choosing the
right heat pump
for your home
Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit,
most homes include at least one heat pump,
if not a whole heating solution. They can
provide cheap, clean heat and are much more
convenient than a log burner as you just need
to press a button. But how do you decide what
is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is
key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every
situation varies and it is therefore important
to get professional advice from heat pump
experts.
The range varies from wall mounted high
walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems,
ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted
central heating systems allowing you to have a
very discreet way of heating your whole home
to a constant temperature throughout.
Firstly, you must select a heat pump that
is suitable for the size of the space you wish
to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to
ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area
taken into consideration but also, insulation,
building orientation, windows and ceiling
space. There are a wide range of heat pumps
available with different heating outputs so it
is important to select the correct size for your
requirements that will handle the job but not
be unnecessarily overpowered.
Secondly, the location of your heat pump
is also extremely important. The cheapest
installation is a back to back where the outdoor
unit is positioned directly behind the indoor
unit however this is not necessarily always
the best option. It is vital that the indoor
unit is positioned in a place that will not be
constantly blowing on you. Also important, is
the location of the outdoor unit. Most people
do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly
in their outdoor entertaining area or right
outside their bedroom window.
Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands
have come and gone over the years but there
are a number of manufacturers who provide
reputable and reliable products. All brands vary
in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems
and price, so it depends on your application as
to which will be most suitable. Major brands
such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin,
Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands
backed up by good technical after sales service.
Ensure your heat pump is installed by an
accredited installer. This will not only ensure
correct installation of your heat pump, but also
validate the manufacturers warranty.
Other things to consider when choosing a
heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the
remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi
capabilities.
Heating is a major investment in your home
and it is vital to get the right advice.
Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply,
installation and servicing of all major brands
of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers
ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as
to which system will suit your application
the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no
obligation quote and will come to your home
to see what is required.
