For many, this means the instalment of a moratorium on the creation of genetically altered humans due to the potential volatility associated with the technology. However, the fact that some countries are already surging ahead with research and experimentation in this field may instigate a genetic arms race for the development of appropriate technology and genetically modified individuals, to maintain political, technological, or even military strength. For many people, the use of genetic modification technology to save lives and improve wellbeing could be a godsend. That being said, it traits may well spell the beginning of a slippery slope to a trend of luxury modification developing faster than any regulation that could control it. As we move into the future, it is critical that we ensure that if we accept access to such technology, it is not determined by economic or class factors, lest we instil the socio-genetic rift so feared by scientific writers on the subject of human genetic engineering throughout science fiction history.
