without the orig<strong>in</strong>al manuscripts. It does not pre-<br />

tend to be a literal render<strong>in</strong>g ; and the general<br />

sense of the Arabic doubtless presented few diffi-<br />

culties, except <strong>in</strong> philosophical and scientific terms,<br />

to Dr. Dieterici, who was study<strong>in</strong>g Arabic <strong>in</strong> Egypt<br />

more than thirty years ago.<br />

In technical matters, moreover, the translator has<br />

had the advantage of the assistance of several<br />

scientific men—as Professors and Drs. Bruhns,<br />

<strong>For</strong>ster, Karsten, Hanste<strong>in</strong>, Rammelsberg, and Ebren-<br />

berg.<br />

Altogether, these twenty years of patient labour<br />

have resulted <strong>in</strong> a book which, whilst susceptible<br />

of much improvement, reflects the highest credit on<br />

Dr. Dieterici's <strong>in</strong>dustry and zeal, and is one of<br />

the most <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g additions to Oriental study<br />

that <strong>in</strong>defatigable Germany has produced for many<br />

years.<br />

In the seventh Tract the Brethren put forward a<br />

scheme of knowledge, which will give an <strong>in</strong>sight <strong>in</strong>to<br />

their method, and is therefore subjo<strong>in</strong>ed. " <strong>The</strong><br />

sciences," they say, "at which men toil, fall <strong>in</strong>to<br />

primary studies, religious studies, and philosophical<br />

studies."<br />

I. Primary studies are the educational sciences,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tended to help men to a ma<strong>in</strong>tenance, and to direct<br />

them <strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>tercourse with others. <strong>The</strong>y are n<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> number : (a) writ<strong>in</strong>g and read<strong>in</strong>g ; (b) lexicography<br />

and grammar ; (c) simple arithmetic ; (d) poetry and<br />

music; (e) the doctr<strong>in</strong>e of omens and forebod<strong>in</strong>gs;<br />

(/ ) that of magic, amulets, alchymy ; (g)<br />
