Steve Menzies and Tony Howe purchased four trucks from Taylor Contractors and established their new Rolleston-based company, Transcon Ltd, to provide bulk cartage of grains, fertilisers and stock foods to the farming sector in the Selwyn District, and across Canterbury. “We decided to do it for ourselves,” says Steve, which has proved to be a good decision. Business has taken off, and this has seen the company fleet being expanded to seven trucks. Also, within just the last few weeks, Transcon has added a new service – mini readymix, which provides concrete loads of up to three metres for smaller rural and residential jobs such as driveways, paths, shed foundations and fencing. “All concrete is batched on site so can meet the customer’s desired specification. Our ready mix operation can operate 24/7 to suit when you want concrete,” Steve says. Transcon employs four full-time staff members, who are from the area, and Steve and Tony are very pleased to be providing jobs and servicing their local region with a fast and efficient cartage service. SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at Wednesday [Edition July 4 datE] 2018 333 SELWYN RURAL LIFE Lamb leads boost in meat exports The value of lamb exports hit a new record of $369 million in May 2018, Statistics NZ announced last Wednesday, with higher prices and more quantities of lamb exported boosting the May level. The previous high for lamb exports was $340 million in February 2009. “It has been a strong month for meat exports in general, with both lamb and beef increasing in quantities,” international statistics manager Tehseen Islam said. Meat exports were up $119 million (17 per cent) to $812 million. Quantity was also up 12 per cent. Lamb exports were the biggest contributor to the rise in meat, with value up $89 million (32 per cent) and quantity up 22 per cent. Exports of lamb were up to all major markets, including China and the European Union. Beef exports were up $16 million (4.5 per cent) to $359 million, with more exports to China. This increase was partly offset by a fall to the United States. Overall exports were up $509 million (10 per cent) to $5.4 billion, with meat exports having the largest increase. This exports total is the second highest for any month. The highest exports total was $5.5 billion in December 2017. Forestry products had the second-largest increase in exports, up $99 million (26 per cent) to $477 million. The largest increases were to China, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
