New bulk cartage business<br />
servicing <strong>Selwyn</strong> District<br />
In October last year, two <strong>Selwyn</strong> residents with long-term experience in operational<br />
management roles in the transport industry decided to join forces and set up their own<br />
transport company to service the district.<br />
Steve Menzies and Tony Howe purchased four trucks from Taylor Contractors and<br />
established their new Rolleston-based company, Transcon Ltd, to provide bulk cartage of<br />
grains, fertilisers and stock foods to the farming sector in the <strong>Selwyn</strong> District, and across<br />
Canterbury.<br />
“We decided to do it for ourselves,” says Steve, which has proved to be a good decision.<br />
Business has taken off, and this has seen the company fleet being expanded to seven<br />
trucks.<br />
Also, within just the last few weeks, Transcon has added a new service – mini readymix,<br />
which provides concrete loads of up to three metres for smaller rural and residential jobs<br />
such as driveways, paths, shed foundations and fencing.<br />
“All concrete is batched on site so can meet the customer’s desired specification. Our<br />
ready mix operation can operate 24/7 to suit when you want concrete,” Steve says.<br />
Transcon employs four full-time staff members, who are from the area, and Steve and<br />
Tony are very pleased to be providing jobs and servicing their local region with a fast and<br />
efficient cartage service.<br />
