Implications for Providers
These emerging trends are changing the service provision and funding landscape and presenting new
challenges for providers of disability and aged care.
Remote Servicing
Traditional residential care environments are structured and closely monitored, allowing a high degree
of control over service delivery and staff activity. By contrast, in-home and community-based care is
delivered remotely in uncontrolled environments with minimal opportunities for supervision.
In addition, while in-home care reduces the cost of fixed infrastructure, providers must now bear the
cost and risk of moving staff from place to place to offer services. Travel between locations represents
significant ‘downtime’ which reduces overall productivity.
Competition for Staff
In addition to increased demand from an ageing population and structural shifts in the sector, providers
are facing labour market challenges.
