ARE ALL SAUNAS CREATED EQUAL?
When buying a barrel sauna, its important
to ask, where was it made and does the
manufacturer actually use a sauna? Our
barrels come from Finland and are made by a
passionate family company, who live, breathe
and sleep sauna! They are handcrafted from
Thermowood, which is Nordic spruce that has
been heat treated at 205°C for two days. The
timber is free of resin, durable, not prone to
warping and perfect for a sauna. Similar looking
saunas are available, however we use 45mm
thickness timber to ensure longevity. Unrivalled
in size and options for customisation,
Canterbury Saunas also exclusively offer
the Huum heater, which can be controlled
remotely with a smart phone. For a more
rustic feel, purchasers can also upgrade to a
traditional wood burning heater.
ARE THEY EXPENSIVE TO RUN?
Not at all! A sauna compares well to a
conventional hot tub, without the need to run
the heater constantly. We have used our St
Albans sauna every other day for three months
and have found electricity costs of $1.50 to $2
a session.
DO YOU NEED TO SPEND A LOT OF
TIME ON MAINTENANCE?
A quick sweep-out and wipe down every
few weeks will suffice. Oiling the outside of
the timber once a year is also recommended.
There are no filters to be changed or harsh
chemicals to be added.
RELAX,
REFRESH,
REJUVENATE
Style talks to Mark Smith about how a barrel
sauna will complement your garden and create
a sanctuary of relaxation.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF
REGULAR SAUNA TIME?
Published studies from the University of Bristol,
using very large study groups over 20 years,
have delivered some interesting findings.
Regular use of a Finnish-style sauna can reduce
blood pressure and chance of stroke. It also
benefits skin conditions and eases breathing
problems. Soft tissue aches and pains are
eased in the heat of sauna. Finally the barrel
shape and quiet combine to create a feeling of
peace and sanctuary.
WHAT’S A COMMON MISCONCEPTION
YOU FIND PEOPLE HAVE ABOUT
SAUNAS?
People are often worried about nudity,
however it’s perfectly acceptable to wear
swimwear. The sauna is also very nice in
summer time, as a common misconception
is that sauna is only a winter pastime. Lastly,
the barrels are very easy to assemble for the
average home handy person, only requiring an
electrician to install the heater.
