EDDY EXPLAINED – PART 3 – BOW OPERATIONS
In the previous issue of ‘Tugs Towing &
Offshore Newsletter‘, the maneuvering
basics of EDDY tugs were explained. In
this edition, steering and braking at the
bow will be illustrated. The vast majority
of today’s tugs are of the ‘ASD’ type, also
called the ‘reverse tractor’ type. ASD tugs
are versatile and capable tugs, although it
is generally acknowledged that tractor
type tugs are significantly more suitable as
bow tugs. Recent accidents, such as with
the Fairplay 22, demonstrate that ASD
tugs used at the bow can result in
dangerous situations. Increased overall performance expectations also suggest that the effectiveness
of bow tugs need to be increased. The first figure shows a bow steering operation under speed. Due
to the tug’s low drag, the forward thruster can be utilized to propel and steer the tug while the aft
thruster is available to push full force against the towline direction. By increasing the tug’s yaw
angle, the towline force can be further increased. Unlike ASD tugs, the steering and braking
effectiveness of EDDY tugs increases (rather than decreases) with towline angle. As a bow-tug,
towline forces can exceed 150 per cent of installed BP while effectiveness increases with speed.
EDDY bow tugs can also effectively brake the assisted vessel, or perform a combination of braking
and steering with minimum need for repositioning. Having both thrusters on the centerline and
minimum 35 degrees tumblehome, the risk of steel-to-steel contact with the assisted vessel is
minimized. The fisheye figure shows a
situation where the tug’s fender is
touching the ship’s side. Normally the
master will keep a safe distance from the
bow, but this to illustrate the remaining
clearances. The ability to move and push
sideways also facilitates safe pilot and
crew transfer to vessels running with
speeds up to 12 knots. In the following
issue of ‘Tugs Towing & Offshore
Newsletter, steering and braking at the
stern will be explained in more detail.
MARTINE P CHRISTENED IN AALST
Advertisement
After a rainy period that day and after
the last rain drop the ceremony of the
new Euro Carrier 2611 was started.
Under the watchfull eye of a large
number of invitees Martine Peute
wished vessel and crew a safe voyage.
Then she cut the ribbon to which the
champagne bottle was attached. This
then burst at once on the bow of the
Martine P. Before the Christening
husband Jan Peute, Managing Director
Of Gareloch Support Services B.V.,
Maassluis already expressed his thanks
to the management and employees of
the shipyard in Aalst who had succeeded for the third time in a relatively short time to deliver a
modern Euro Carrier to his company. The Martine P is a sister vessel of our first vessel , the Mena C
or Rhu. It is a Euro Carrier 2611 with a length of 26.28 meters, a width of 11.00 meters and a draft
of 3.20 meters. The propulsion consists of two Caterpillar C32 main engines with a total capacity of
2,638 hp. This gives the vessel a bollard pull of 33.5 tons and a speed of 12 knots. The Mena C or
Rhu, which was completed last
December, went straight to Denmark to
assist with towing Wind Farm Monopiles
to the heavy lift vessel “HLV Svanen”
from Ballast Nedam NV for Anholt Wind
Farm. For vessel number two, the Sandy
M, there was also immediate work. This
vessel came into service last February and
immediately went to Sunderland for the
English east coast to assist a cable laying
pontoon As it looks now, Jan continued,
the Martine P will spend the next three
months in Marocco at a port construction
project assisting a cutter dredger with
Anchor Handling and refuelling the dredger and all other tasks. (Source: Gareloch Marine Services
I noticed in your newsletter
that there aren’t any pictures
of the London at night or
dusk so I am sending this one
my husband, Allen took. He
was the Rig Mover onboard
the 258 (jack-up rig) being
moved. She is really beautiful
at night! I hope her company
allows you to post this picture
of her! (also the guys of the
London kept me updated
through the long tow—I think I chewed my nails into the quick—AND I don’t chew my nails as a
rule! But the crew of the London made it seem so easy most of the time—that is until I saw how far
behind the London the 258 was……that was scary for me—it was Allen’s first long tow and my first
time to be without Allen for two months!!!!! I know most people are old hands at this "being away
from each other”, but for me it was nerve wracking. Thankfully the London made short order of
the trip and Allen arrived home safely & tired but happy to be back on dry land!) Regards, Ceceilia
NORTHERN ISLES EMERGENCY TUG COVER EXTENDED TILL END OF
MAY
Existing emergency tug cover for the Northern Isles has been extended for another month. The
move is to allow the UK government more time to reach a deal with the oil and gas industry over
5/23

13 TH VOLUME, NO. 18 DATED 06 MAY 2012
future provision. The long term plan is to replace the dedicated coastguard tug Anglian Sovereign
with standby vessel Grampian Frontier. Orkney and Shetland MP Alistair Carmichael said funding
had been agreed for cover until the end of May. He told BBC Scotland it was important the details of
the final deal were ironed out. He said: "It is now well known the shape of future provision is going
to rely on a tug being made available by the offshore oil industry as and when it is needed. "There
are, however, a lot of other issues around that, about training, about equipment, about
indemnification. These are the things that are being tied down now. "It is one of these cases where it
is best to get it right, rather than to get it quick." The Anglian Sovereign was due to have been
withdrawn from service in March but was given a last-minute reprieve to allow an agreement over
cover to be reached. Another vessel, the Anglian Monarch, which provided coastguard cover off
west Scotland, based at Stornoway, was withdrawn from duties in March when interim UK
government funding for it ended. (Source: BBC)
WELLINGTON PORT PLANS TO BUY NEW TUG
CentrePort plans to purchase a
brand new tug boat which
expected to be working alongside
Wellington wharves next year.
Chief Executive Blair O'Keeffe
said the new tug would be
capable of pulling 68 tonnes.
Plans were for it to partner
CentrePort's five year old tug
Tiaki, to help 'future proof' the
company and ensure the region
could continue to welcome
record numbers of cruise ships and cargo freight. ''More than a fifth of cruise liners calling at
Wellington next year will be over 300 metres long and the next generation will be 340 metres long.
The Queen Elizabeth, already a regular visitor to Wellington, is 294 metres long,'' Mr O'Keefe said.
In 2012 CentrePort tugs assisted in more than 1,300 ship movements in Wellington Harbour. ''This
new tug, which will be the same size as Tiaki, will be able to increase our capacity, and will have
positive flow-on benefits for our customers and the people of the region through more cargo freight
and tourists on cruise ships,'' Mr O'Keefe said. Not contract had yet been let for the new tug. (Source
tugboat RB-42 (serial number 931)
is the twelfth tug of this type built
for Russian Navy. Tugs of this
project are built by JSC Pella
Shipyard since 2002 for civil
customers, and since 2008 – for
Russian Navy’s auxiliary fleet. Project 90600 tugs operated by auxiliary flotillas of Northern, Black
sea, and Baltic fleets have proved themselves as multi-functional fully answering their purpose.
These tugs gradually replace overages Soviet-built harbor craft. Russian Navy intends to continue
renew auxiliary fleet with tugboats built by Pella Shipyard. In 2011, Russian defense ministry signed
a contract for seven Project 90600 tugs. The next tug of this type (serial number 932) will be put
END OF AN ERA AS LAST OF OLD DUBLIN PORT TOWAGE FLEET SOLD
Ben Eadar becomes the final member of
an older generation of tugs to be sold
having belonged to the Dublin Port &
Docks Board (DP&DB) which was later to
become the Dublin Port Company, writes
Jehan Ashmore. The 17-tonnes bollard
pull (tbp) Ben Eadar (built 1973 / 198grt)
was sold to ARPA & Co. of Setubal,
Portugal, though ironically she may be
towed to her new working grounds. She
was the oldest of the trio alongside her
fleetmates Cluain Tarbh (1991/268grt) and
Deilginis (1997/335grt). They were eventually replaced when the first of a pair of newbuilds entered
in 2009. The Deilginis therefore was the last tug commissioned by the DP&DB. In addition they
were the last tugs named after Dublin Bay coastal suburbs spelt in Irish. Deilginis is a translation for
Dalkey, Cluain Tarbh for Clontarf and Ben Eadar for Howth. The 35tbp Cluain Tarbh was renamed
Elliot in February after her transfer to new owners T.P. Towing in Gibraltar while the 37tbp
Deilginis remains in Irish waters. She made a delivery voyage several weeks ago to Killybegs to start
a new career with Sinbad Marine Services. The newcomer replaces another Voith Schneider tug the
Carron of 24tbp which was sold to the Forth Bridge Consortium. With only 13,000 working hours
clocked-up on Deilginis main Caterpillar engines, she is however to undergo an upgrade to install
new piping and wheelhouse electronics amongst other alterations. Currently the Deilginis is
classified with Bureau Veritas and has a notation of coastal waters but Sinbad intend to upgrade this
to Limited European Area (LEA) waters so to increase a greater operational role. She joins the multipurpose
Sinbad fleet which provide coastal towage, berthing assistance, oil spill recovery, fire
fighting and dredging assistance. (Source: Aloat; Photo: W. Ryan)
MINISTER OF INDUSTRY ANNOUNCES SUPPORT FOR QUEBEC TUG
OPERATOR
The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, announced the Harper Government's
9/23

13 TH VOLUME, NO. 18 DATED 06 MAY 2012
support for the construction of a 25-metre tug at Ocean Industries Inc.'s shipyard, located on l'Isleaux-Coudres,
Quebec. "Our government stands firmly behind the Canadian shipbuilding industry,
which has a long and proud history in the design and building of quality vessels," said Minister
Paradis. "This contribution maintains shipbuilding jobs and supports growth in the industry."
Through the Structured Financing Facility (SFF) program, the Harper Government will invest up to
$1.59 million in Ocean Remorquage Montreal for this project. The tug construction project will
contribute to the ongoing operation of Ocean Industries and will support the apprenticeship
program for electricians and welders. Ocean Industries Inc.'s shipyard is part of Ocean Group,
which provides numerous marine services on the St. Lawrence River and on the Great Lakes,
including tug operations, ship construction and repairs, and dredging. Created in 2001, the SFF helps
ensure the existence of shipyard capability for federal marine procurement and maintenance
requirements. In this current context, following the announcement of the National Shipbuilding
Procurement Strategy (NSPS), the program is intended to act as a bridge for the industry until the
NSPS is implemented. The SFF program provides interest rate support to qualifying purchasers of
vessels built in Canada, resulting in lower financing costs for building or modifying vessels or
offshore marine structures. (Source: EIN News)
A WARTIME TUG ON THE CYPRUS BEACH
One of the readers of the Tugs Towing &
30M Z-TECH 7000 ASD TUG DELIVERY
Given the strength in global
demand for tugs and offshore
commercial vessels, Cheoy
Lee had embarked on several
speculative build projects
over the past 18 months. Two
58 metre Anchor Handling
Tugs (with differing
configurations and drive
systems), two Z-Tech 7000
tugs, and one 31m ASD tug.
Prior to completion, both
58m vessels, and one Z-Tech 7000 were sold, with contracts pending on the remaining two stock
vessels. The Z-Tech 7000 tug was delivered on April 25, and the first 58m vessel is due for handover
on May 10th. The ability to offer new commercial vessels with short lead times has proven to be an
effective strategy. The Z-Tech 7000 owner, Hadi H. Al-Hammam Est., is a long standing customer of
Cheoy Lee. The Hadi H. Al-Hammam group is a leading general contracting, trading and marine
service provider to the oil and gas, and petrochemical industry in the Middle East, headquartered in
Saudi Arabia. Near sisterships to earlier deliveries in the Z-Tech 7000 tug series, the latest delivery,
named Hadi 52, is fitted with two Caterpillar 3516C, 2682hp diesels driving a pair of azimuthing
Schottel SRP1515FP rudder propellers. The configuration results in a bollard pull of 70 tonnes, and a
free running speed of 13 knots. The vessel is currently on route to the Middle East on her own
bottom with a delivery crew from Redwise Maritime. As with all Z-Tech tugs, the 7000 series is
designed by Robert Allan Ltd., and classed to Lloyd’s, with the notation +100A1 Tug, +LMC, UMS.
The lower deck houses six crew members in three cabins. A further 2-man crew cabin is on the
main deck as well as two single officer cabins, the galley and crew mess area. Principal Dimensions:
ACCIDENTS – SALVAGE NEWS
ABANDONED SHIPS A RUSTING HAZARD IN NIGERIA WATERS
The powerful waves of the Atlantic Ocean
crash against rusting hulks beached along the
coastline just outside of Nigeria's largest city,
as lines of cargo ships waiting to come to port
stretch across the western horizon.
Government officials say they don't know
how many abandoned ships choke Nigeria's
waterways, but they cause tremendous
environmental and navigational hazards. And
as more wash ashore daily, the massive
vessels cause fast-moving erosion along
Nigeria's beaches that can tear away a kilometer of shoreline in a matter of days, experts say.
"Shorelines are supposed to seasonally increase and decrease," said Ikenna C. Onyema, a professor of
marine sciences at the University of Lagos. "When a manmade structure comes in between, it cuts
out its life." Forgotten ships rust across Nigeria's roughly 850-kilometer (525-mile) coastline, while
others can been seen partially submerged on inland waterways and creeks. Some have been there
for decades, while others only days. Many, abandoned after the lucrative theft of crude oil, serve as
hulking metaphors for the lawlessness that plagues Nigeria. The history of abandoned ships in
Nigeria is intertwined with the slowly growing, strangling grip of corruption that nation has faced
since it gained its independence from Britain in 1960. The first such ships came amid the booming
trade of importing cement into the country during the massive projects of former military ruler
Gen. Yakubu "Jack" Gowon in the early 1970s. (Source: AP; Photo: S.Alamba-AP via L.Kramer)
RENA UPDATE 4 TH MAY 2012
Svitzer has continued to make good progress
removing containers and debris from the Rena
wreck over the past week. Salvors have been
cutting into containers to allow contents to be
removed using the heavy lift helicopter.
Salvors have also this week focused on cutting
up hatch covers and removing them from the
wreck. Favourable weather conditions have
allowed dive operations around the stern
section to locate and remove bags of debris
from the sea bed around the wreck. At
Astrolabe Reef, there are currently moderate W-SW winds, which are expected to persist through
until Monday morning. There are swells of around 1m at the reef. The number of containers
recovered and brought ashore by Braemar has risen to 769. This leaves an estimated 201 containers
in the bow section, most of them empty, and a further 358 in the aft section or on the seabed
nearby. Mr Lloyd says that Braemar is continuing to operate under instructions from, and with
strong support from Rena's owners, who are maintaining a close watch on progress with the cleanup.
WORTH EUR 110 MILLION
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V.
(Boskalis) has acquired three
energy related contracts for
projects in Northwest Europe
with a combined contract value
of approximately EUR 110
million. Boskalis has signed a
contract with partners DONG
Energy and Scottish Power
Renewables for the partial
construction of the "West of
Duddon Sands" offshore wind
park in the Irish Sea. The work
comprises the preparation of the
seabed and the transport and placing of 108 wind turbine foundations. The project will be carried

13 TH VOLUME, NO. 18 DATED 06 MAY 2012
out by Boskalis Offshore and SMIT Marine Projects in collaboration with partner Volker
Construction International. The project includes the transport of the foundations, consisting of
monopiles and transition pieces, from Aalborg in Denmark to Belfast in Northern Ireland, by SMIT's
oceangoing flat-top barges and tugs. An initial scour protection filter layer will be placed on the
seabed at each location by a Boskalis fallpipe vessel, after which the monopiles and transition pieces
will be transported from Belfast to the wind park where they will be installed. Once the installation
has been completed, a further scour protection layer around the piles will be laid, this time with a
larger stone fraction, using the same fallpipe vessel. The combined contract value for Boskalis-SMIT
amounts to approximately EUR 70 million. The work will commence in the first quarter of 2013 and
be completed mid-2014. In addition, Boskalis will carry out stone-dumping work on behalf of
Seajacks for the Meerwind offshore wind park that is being developed by WindMW in the German
section of the North Sea. The project involves the placement of an erosion protection filter layer on
the seabed using a fallpipe vessel after which Seajacks will install 80 wind turbine foundations.
Following the installation of the 80 monopiles, the same fallpipe vessel will be used to apply further
erosion protection around the foundations consisting of stones with a larger fraction size (up to 500
kilograms each). This will provide optimal erosion protection for the monopiles arising from local
wave and current conditions. Work is scheduled to start in August 2012 with completion expected
in mid-2013. (Source: Boskalis; Photo: Huib Lievense)
SOUTH BOATS DELIVERS ITS 57TH WFSV CAERNARFON BAY
South Boats Special Projects Ltd. has
launched and commissioned of its 57th
offshore wind farm crew transfer vessel,
‘Caernarfon Bay’. The vessel is the first
of the South Catamaran 19m WFSV
designs to be delivered and features a
host of developments. Built for Turbine
Transfers Ltd. the vessel has passaged to
a contract in the German North Sea
following successful trials and
acceptance. The ‘Caernarfon Bay’ has an
LOA of 21m, Beam of 7.4m, Draught of
1.1m and a lightship displacement of 43
tonnes. The 19m WFSV is a
development of the smaller 18m and features increased fuel efficiency, higher performance, higher
deck cargo including container mounts and lashing points, provision for secondary access systems
and a soft mounted passenger saloon and bridge to increase passenger comfort (and reduce noise and
vibration) on the longer and more arduous conditions experienced further offshore. Powered by
twin Caterpillar 10V2000M72 1200mhp diesel engines coupled to Ultra Dynamics UJ575 water jet
units the vessel achieved a sprint speed of 27.8 knots and is capable of cruising at speeds in excess of
22 knots with full tanks and a full complement of 12 passengers. One feature of the new design and
a benefit of the full bow concept is only a 2 knot drop off in performance with 10 tonnes of cargo on
the forward deck. The vessel has an approved stability booklet to carry up to 16 tonnes of cargo, 12
on the forward deck and 4 on the after deck. The vessel is the first ‘production vessel’ built by South
Boats that features anti-noise and vibration paint coatings, double glazed windows, remote air
intakes and outlets, noise and vibration absorbent sole panels and isolated side and overhead
panelling, which in conjunction with the soft mounted superstructure, attached with only eight
mounts, results in class leading and near silent noise levels in the passenger saloon and bridge areas.
The vessel is built under survey and certified to DNV +1A1 HSLC R2 Wind Farm Service 1 and
MCA Workboat Code Category 1 for operation on any UK and European offshore wind farm. The
vessel features numerous systems including fuel transfer capability to supply offshore generators, a
pressure washer to wash down boat landings and ladders, integrated through raft anchor recovery
system and spare hydraulic capacity for deck cranes and secondary access systems. Internally the
vessel features 12 sprung seats with Turbine Transfers corporate logo embroidered into the head
rests, a large galley, large mess seating area and plenty of vessel and O&M spares lockers. All saloon
furniture, including seats, are mounted to a track system enabling swift re-arrangement of furniture
or removal to suit specific roles and tasks. Another benefit of the soft mounted superstructure are
the new ‘electrical cabinets’ fitted at the aft end of the lower saloon with excellent access to
electrical service items. The upper bridge is accessed via a stairway from the aft saloon and features a
fully integrated ship control, monitoring, navigation and communications system across the front of
the bridge. The specially designed console is based on 19” racking with all processers and equipment
each allocated a pull out drawer to enhance serviceability and maintenance, which all help reduce
breakdowns and down time. The vessel has two independent control systems that enable the vessel
to remain fully operational in the event of a control system failure. These features have all been
designed and integrated following extensive analysis as to how serviceability can be increased,
offering clients reduced down time and greater earning potential. South Boats continues to build 25
wind farm crew transfer vessels per annum and the new generation 13m, 16m, 17m, 19m, 24m and
28m designs are now populating the range. All of these new generation vessels feature modular
superstructures, integrated systems, options for secondary access systems and new bow fender
system. With 5 years’ experience building 58 wind farm vessels for 15 operators and having worked
on over 25 projects, there is no doubt that South Boats catamarans remain the vessel of industry
choice. (Source: South Boats)
Seacor Cougar in April 2009. The
operator intends to push the boundaries
even further with these larger, faster
vessels, by offering increased capacity and
comfort. The vessels will each be powered by four MTU 16V4000 M73L main engines, which will
drive Hamilton HT-810 water jets. The vessels will have the capacity to reach speeds in excess of 46
knots. Extensive sea keeping studies were performed to develop a design that not only improved
passenger comfort, but also increased operational efficiency. The result is a vessel that reduces
motions by an average of 20%, with vertical acceleration reduced by 40%. As with Cheetah and
Cougar the cargo deck is lined with hardwood inserts, and protected by heavy duty cargo rails at the
sides. An optional landing rig for surfer class vessels can be fitted amidships. The vessels will have
the capacity to carry 150 tons of deck cargo. The combination of four reversing jets and 2 retractable
azimuth thrusters, coupled with a Kongsberg control system, provides the vessels with dynamic
positioning in a wide operating area. The vessels will have DP3 capability. The main deck passenger
cabin seats 150 at an increased pitch, whilst comfort is further enhanced with increased luggage
space and additional toilets. The main passenger cabin also houses a snack bar. The upper deck
wheelhouse features forward and aft control stations. Outside are fire monitors and rescue boat. As
well as excellent forward and aft visibility, direct stairs are provided to the foredeck for quick and
safe mooring operations. The hulls accommodate 14 crew in a mix of officer and non-rated cabins.
The port hull features galley and mess facilities. (Source: Incat Crowther)
