Keeping your child
safe around water this
summer …
Swimming pool safety
Each year, millions of Britons jet
off to sunnier climes and stay in
accommodation with swimming pools.
It is essential to consider a number of
factors when booking your holiday to
ensure you keep your children safe
around the water.
• Before you go away consider
enrolling your children in swimming
lessons to help them learn this lifesaving
skill
• Check pool safety arrangements
for where you’re staying in
advance. For example, check if your
accommodation has alifeguard on
duty at all times
• Be cautious about booking private
villas that don’t have safety fencing
– young children are curious and can
easily wander off and jump in to an
unsupervised pool
• While you’re away:
Always supervise children near water
and keep aclose eye on them when
they’re in the pool
Be aware that children don’t shout out
for help when they’re drowning, so it’s
vital that you’re vigilant at all times
Understand that inflatables are
not asubstitute for supervision or
swimming ability * 1
And on the beach ….
So, where is asafe place to swim?
• On alifeguarded beach
• Ared and yellow flag indicates asafe
place to swim or use inflatables
• Ared flag is asign for danger and
means NO SWIMMING. Never go in
the water when the red flag is flying
• Always be aware that there may be
hazards that you cannot see
Young children should always be
supervised when on the beach. Make
sure you explain to your children that
it’s not safe to swim on their own in
the sea. * 2
Everyone Active’s award-winning
swim lessons help adults and children
to learn how to swim, float, and gain
confidence in and around the water.
Dr Ranj is encouraging families
to hurry outside to tap into
some bountiful, beneficial
natural light, before it’s too late and the
nights start drawing in. The Get Well
Soon hospital doctor leads by example,
saying he loves getting out into the
park and harnessing the extra boost of
productivity that the longer days help to
kick start in his system.
“Summer is my favourite time of
mood and increases my productivity.
“Not only do Iachieve more, but Iget
the urge to be more active too. Icannot
“As the days get sunnier and longer,
it’s important to make the most of them
whilst they last. Here are five reasons
why it’s good to get outside…”
Healthy hearts
Getting outdoors leads to increased
physical activity,which is
important in maintaining ahealthy
cardiovascular system as well as
reducing the risk of obesity and
long-term medical problems
Feel-good
Play in outside spaces
encourages social interaction and
mood, which helps boost
mental wellbeing
Summer is my favourite time of year. Ifind that
when we have brighter, longer days it automatically
elevates my mood and increases my productivity
Our summer tips for...
STAYING INDOORS
With simple changes you can brighten
up family life and soak in more beneficial
daylight – without thefuss of decamping
from home. Time for a couple of extra
jobs around the home? Polishing up your
window panes helps letinmaximum
daylight for energizing results. Or position
your dining table next to a sunny window, if
possible. This furniture move helps everyone
soak up nourishing bursts of daylight.
GLORIOUS GARDENS
Making the effort
to move small snippets
of life outdoors is well worth it. Families
who’ve invested in garden furniture
could aim to sit outdoors seven days
a week (weather allowing), and not just
on special occasions or weekends.
Taking snacks outdoors is a good way
to soak up natural light, with theadded
bonus of saving carpets from crumbs.
Reading or creating art
together outside,
bundled up under ablanket ifthebreeze
sets in, also reduces screen time and
ups children’s natural light quota.
LIGHT FANTASTIC
Always look on the bright side – even on
cloudy days, outdoor light is lots brighter
than indoor lighting.
Outdoor light helps to balance out screen
time and might encourage healthier eyesight
in youngsters, research suggests.
Remember, don’t forget sun screen, hats
and shades on hot, sunny days.
Brain
training
Exploring the outside environment
encourages curiosity,imagination
and the formation of new ideas,
all of which are important for
mental development
Charles Darwin and awhole lot of cardboard
The Reluctant Dragon
When adragon is discovered up on
the Downs, the Boy is not in the least
surprised. He’s always known the cave
there was adragon cave, so it seems
only right for a dragon to be living in
it. But this particular dragon is not a
bit like the ones in fairy tales -this one
writes poetry and doesn’t like fighting!
A touching, sweet and funny tale of
bravery, friendship and derring-do for
all the family.
SUMMER 2018
| www.primarytimes.co.uk/northyorkshire
Have a busy summer with the National Trust
Beningbrough Hall,
Gallery and Gardens
Unleash your wild ones this
summer for a new adventure.
We've said goodbye to
the trusty old fort in the
wilderness play area and in
its place is a massive pyramid
tower and climbing wall
waiting to be scaled. There’s
even a swing bridge and two
new slides to sail down.
On Fridays in August meet
up with Orville, Willow, Gizmo and the team from Wise Owl Bird of Prey
Rescue on Feathered Friends Fridays in August, hold the birds and watch
their impressive flying displays.
And every Monday – Wednesday join the Artrageous craft workshops to
make something different every week of the holidays.
Fountains Abbey &
Studley Royal
Could you make your own
clothes? That's what the monks
of Fountains Abbey had to do
to make their robes, as they
couldn't just pop to the shops!
Come to Swanley Grange and
kids can have a go at spinning
wool and weaving on a loom
just like the monks used to. They
don’t have to make their own
clothes though, we’ll be helping them to make a simple friendship bracelet
or if they want to test themselves, they can have a go at weaving a hat.
Down in the grounds find all four new art works in the garden. Spot Polly
before she sees you; listen closely for the drips and drops of the long lost
bathing house at the Listening Tower; take some weird and wonderful selfies
in the Gazing Ball's mirrored sphere and find the cloud – will it rain above
you? Pick up a folly family trail and set off exploring.
Nunnington Hall
LEGO’s Brick Flicks
exhibition is on display
at Nunnington for the
summer, showing some
of the most iconic
and memorable film
moments of all time.
See how many family
favourites you can
recognise with scenes
from movies including
ET, Jurassic Park and
Peter Pan on display.
Kids can join the ‘big build’ competition to make their own LEGO creations.
We’ll have plenty of play LEGO for them to play with and they can use their
imaginations to build whatever they like, with a chance to win their own
bucket load of LEGO.
Ormesby Hall
Take a trip down the rabbit hole for Ormesby’s Alice in Wonderland inspired
summer of adventure. Kids can follow the shrinking Alice trail through the
house and garden, stopping to try things along the way. Make sure they’re
not tricked by the Cheshire Cat on their way to make crowns, bunny ears
and some Alice inspired crafts.
Out in the garden and on the lawns we’re celebrating a summer of sport
with games including tennis, badminton, cricket and archery to come and
have a go with.
