North finds
footing in girls
soccer game
By Harold Rivera
LYNN — Defense was the
theme of the night for the 23rd
Agganis Girls Soccer All-Star
Game June 26 at Manning
Field. At least for the first half,
that is.
The North All-Stars found
their footing on offense in the
second half, scoring four goals
in the final 40 minutes to come
away with a 4-0 win over the
South squad.
“They’re all very talented
players and they all work hard,”
North coach Tim Phelan, of
Austin Prep, said. “The thing I
like most about this game is it
exposes the girls to the Agganis
Foundation and all the good
things they do for the youth of
the area with college scholarships
and giving back.”
“It was such a great time,”
North coach Chris Coviello,
of Saugus, said. “The kids had
a lot of fun. It wasn’t the result
we were looking for but it is
what it is. We were able to keep
up with them in the first half.
We didn’t have many shots in
the second half.”
Peabody’s Jillian Arrigo and
Emily Nelson, and Lynnfield’s
Elizabeth Shaievitz each scored
goals in the second half to
help lead the North. Nelson
was named MVP for the
North, while St. Mary’s Mia
Nikolakopoulos earned MVP
honors for the South.
“It was definitely cool and
exciting,” Nelson, who’ll
play college soccer at UMass
Lowell, said. “I ended my
same result
LYNN — A pair of Danvers players
made sure that the 23rd annual Agganis
All-Star Boys Soccer Game wouldn’t be
close, as James McPherson and Teddy
Vaillancourt helped lift the North team to a
5-0 win over the South at Manning Field
June 26.
“It was a blast out there today,” said North
coach Shawn Bleau, a Lynn native who
coaches at Newburyport. “I played here in
the Agganis game when I was at English in
the ‘80’s, so I know how important Harry
Agganis and this week is to this area. To be
able to come back and coach in it as well, it
was a great honor.”
McPherson, who took home North
MVP honors, had one goal and one assist.
Vaillancourt played the entire game in net
for the North, making eight saves to complete
the shutout.
Other scorers on the North side were
Newburyport’s Will Olson-Sidford (two
goals), Central Catholic’s Kyle Ouellette
(one goal, one assist) and Triton’s Cole
‘It was definitely
cool and exciting.
I ended my high
school career with a
high note ... it was
nice to play with
(Jillian Arrigo) one
final time.’
EMILY NELSON
Peabody High
high school career with a high
note. Me and Jillian have been
playing together since we were
10 years old. It was nice to play
with her one final time. A lot
of the girls I played against tonight
are girls that I’ve played
with and against in club. It
was nice to have that friendly
competition.”
While she was unable to play
in the game due to an injury,
it was exciting nonetheless for
Lynnfield’s Kate Mitchell, who
is off to Boston College to run
track and cross country.
“To be on a team with Hannah,
Mack, Syd and Liz again was so
awesome and cool to see them
play together one last time,” she
said. “We have played together
since we were very little so it was
so nice to have one last game.”
After a quiet start to the
game, the North’s Erin O’Shea
(Hamilton-Wenham) broke
through with 32:19 to play in
the first half. English’s Alexa
Zayas nearly tied the score
Although the South team didn’t score
any goals, Chris Garcia of St. Mary’s took
home MVP honors after a great performance.
Also suiting up for the South was
a trio of Tanners in Chris Belliveau, Jacob
Casallas and Michael Panzini as well as
Bishop Fenwick’s Skyler Tucker, who got
one final chance to play for Fenwick’s Tony
Enos, coach of the South team.
It took a long time for the lamp to get lit
in this one, as both Vaillancourt and South
goalie Richard Mateo of St. Mary’s (nine
saves) put on a show over the first 30 minutes
of action. Each keeper recorded multiple
diving saves, knocking away quality
scoring chances.
Finally, with just over seven minutes left
in the first half, a Olson-Sidford strike to
stake the North to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Olivia Tapia-Gately.
shot was saved by North goalie
Mackenzie O’Neill (Lynnfield).
At the end of the first half the
North led 1-0.
The North turned its offensive
attack up a notch in the second
half and it paid dividends.
Nelson scored with 35:30 to
play in the half, then Arrigo
followed suit with a tally at
the 33:16 mark. And two minutes
later, Shaievitz capped the
rally to turn a 1-0 game into a
4-0 North lead. Ellen Klucznik
(Austin Prep) added a goal in
the closing minutes to cap the
scoring.
“It’s great to coach the
Agganis game,” Phelan said.
“A lot of them will play in college
and a for a lot of them this
is their last game. It’s a great
experience, a beautiful facility.
The girls have a good time and
it’s very enjoyable.”
Girls lacrosse:
more of the same
By Daniel Kane
LYNN — After a close first
half, the North surged past the
South in the second half of the
Seventh Agganis Girls Lacrosse
All-Star Game to earn a 14-4 victory
at Manning Field June 28.
The North squad was led by
four goals from Jordyn Tveter
(Masconomet), which earned her
the North team’s MVP award.
Fenwick’s Fran Carpinella and
Rachel Boylan also scored with
Carpinella netting two and Boylan
netting one.
Crusader Colbi Flickinger and
Lynnfield’s Hannah Filipe and
Olivia Smyrnios also were selected
as all-stars.
“This is my third year being
able to coach the Agganis games,”
North coach Kerri O’Connor
(Ipswich) said. “I really think of
it as an honor because these girls
are often my opponents during
the season so I’m focusing on
scouting them but it was fun to
switch gears and actually be able
to coach them.
“This game is a fun opportunity
to see some of the top players
come together and really work
together instead of being against
each other,” she said.
For the South, Jenna Balboni
(Billerica) earned MVP honors
after scoring three goals.
Smyrnios also added one goal for
the South.
“Coming and coaching for the
Agganis game is always a great
way to end the season,” outh
coach Annie Madden said. “To
see all of the seniors come out
and play one final game together
is really a great celebration for
everyone.”
The game started off with a
Lacrosse Game.
quick goal from Tveter, but the
South responded with back-toback
goals from Balboni and
Smyrnios within two minutes of
each other to take a 2-1 lead.
The North team then scored
five consecutive goals, two by
Carpinella, to take a 6-2 lead.
Balboni added another goal in the
final minute of the half to make
the score 6-3 favoring the North
at halftime.
The second half started with
the North’s Machado and Balboni
swapping goals to put the score at
7-4. From there on out the North
dominated, scoring seven unanswered
goals.
“I told them, ‘You were picked.
You’re one of the top players in
your league so you know how to
play, you might not know each
other’s names, but you know how
to communicate and how to move
the ball,’” O’Connor said of her
team. “They did a good job of just
working together as one big unit
out there.”
Boys lacrosse: likewise
By Harold Rivera
LYNN — It isn’t often that an all-star
game becomes a back and forth battle
from the opening whistle to the final seconds.
The June 27th Seventh Agganis
Boys Lacrosse All-Star Game, however,
was certainly one of those.
Andover’s Bret Miller scored the
eventual game-winner with 2:25 remaining
to lead the North all-stars to
a 10-9 win over the South at Manning
Field. Miller’s goal broke a 9-9 tie and
the North defense did just enough to
hold the South offense in the closing
minutes.
“It was a great game,” North coach
Steve Driscoll, of Fenwick, said. “Both
teams definitely competed. I think it kind
of goes to show this game means a lot
to the seniors. Being selected is meaningful
and that’s a good thing for this
game, and for the Agganis foundation.”
Ipswich attacker Patrick Gillis scored
three goals, all in the first half, to pace
the North’s offense. Gillis was named
the North team’s MVP.
“Patrick has done a lot of winning
during his four years at Ipswich,”
Driscoll said. “It’s a nice way to kind of
put that feather in his cap and end his
high school career.
“It’s a cool way for him to go out
and it’s a cool way for all the seniors to
go out. I know our guys from Fenwick
(Brandon Kenney, Tyler Layton, Chris
Russell) had a blast.”
Billerica attacker Tyler Morris scored
two goals and was named the South
team’s MVP.
The first half ended with the teams
deadlocked in a 6-6 tie.
“They wanted to play and score some
goals in the beginning,” Driscoll said.
“Then they started to realize that it was a
pretty even game. It was cool.”
“Lacrosse is such a cool sport that
it’s able to take everything you learned
in hockey, football and baseball and put
it to use on the lacrosse field,” Driscoll
said.
“It really is a sport for athletes. To be
able to see the amount of kids that were
playing in it and the amount of people
that were here, it’s really showing how
important lacrosse has been on the North
Shore over the years.”
