Regenerate Christchurch has set up a hub in Estuary Rd (see page 1) to get public opinion as part of its four-month public consultation process. Why it’s taken Regenerate so long to get to this point is frustrating for some. Rising sea levels and the impact it will have on people living near the coast is massive. There are resource consent and insurance issues. There is also a division between the Southshore Residents’ Association and the South New Brighton Residents’ Association. Southshore is happy consultation has started; South New Brighton passed a vote of no confidence in Regenerate last year. PEGASUS POST Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Tuesday July 10 2018 3 News Call for crossing near new school • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding CALLS ARE being made to have a signalised crossing installed on Travis Rd to help make the area safer for students when the new high school at QE II Park is opened next year. Concerns have been raised a signalised crossing has not been planned for David East Travis Rd to cater for Shirley Boys and Avonside Girls’ High Schools when they moves to QE II Park next year. For the past 12 months the schools have been working with the New Zealand Transport Agency, city council, police and Environment Christchurch on a traffic plan. Shirley Boys’ High School associate headmaster Tim Grocott said it is going to be a very busy road and a signalised crossing is warranted outside QE II Park. The school has also raised concerns over the safety of students using the roundabout at Travis and Frosts Rds. A letter outlining the concerns was presented to the Coastal Burwood Community Board last week. Mr Grocott said the first thing that could immediately be done is reduce the speed limit on Frosts Rd from 70km/h to 50km/h. “It is a very busy roundabout and there will be a number of kids crossing that road . . . somehow they need to find a way of providing a safe crossing for kids,” he said. The signalised crossing and reduced speed on Frosts Rd has been supported by Avonside Girls’ High School. City council’s transport deliver and planning manager Lynette Ellis said school speed zones are planned for Travis Rd and Bower Ave. She said any changes to the street will be subject to consultation before a recommendation is made to the board and city council. Ms Ellis said the city council considering lowering the speed limit at Frosts Rd. Chairwoman Hayley Guglietta said the urban working group aims to gather data on the area’s population to ensure the city council is planning the area to meet the needs of the residents. She said the roading group will look at keeping roading contractors accountable to make sure the time frames they have promised are on track. Pegasus Post has previously reported ongoing roadworks on North Avon Rd are putting pressure on businesses in Richmond. The work is due to be completed in September. PARK UPGRADE Funding has been secured in the city council’s Long Term Plan 2018-2028 to upgrade Donnell Sports Park. The city council has secured $600,000 for the project. Donnell Park suffered earthquake damage to most of its facilities including the tennis court, basketball court, toilets, pathways and playgrounds. City council staff will be working with the community board to determine which assets will be prioritised for the renewal. The projects are set to begin in spring.
