Alcohol
extended
in Ilam,
Riccarton
• By Anan Zaki
STRICTER ALCOHOL rules
could be on the way under a
new bylaw.
City council staff have proposed
to further restrict alcohol
consumption in public places
in Ilam and Riccarton after
requests from police.
The plan is to extend the permanent
alcohol ban area near
Canterbury University to cover
Ilam School which borders the
university.
“In 2015, police and Canterbury
University staff informed
council staff that the school area
should also be included in the
ban area,” a city council staff
report said.
“Staff agree that by making
it part of the alcohol ban area,
it will help to prevent any
antisocial behaviours caused
by alcohol drinking . . . in the
school area.”
Near the university in Ilam
and Riccarton, there were 1028
alcohol disorder offences, 256
instances of wilful damage and
149 minor assaults in the latest
statistics from 2016, the city
council said.
THERE ARE some proverbials about, and
the one I’m referring to tore up Leslie Park
late on Thursday night (see page 1).
The driver was apparently in a blue
Mazda, which has again put the ground out
of action after it was vandalised six weeks ago.
The driver was reported to the police but whether anyone has
been caught is up in the air. We might have more on that next
week.
Leslie Park is home to the Hornby Panthers, a rugby league club
with great history.
Boys will be boys and mad things happen.
Hopefully, the culprit isn’t local. A fair punishment I reckon
would be some tackling practice against the league boys. I don’t
think he’d do it again.
Next step for Hornby mega facility
• By Anan Zaki
WHERE TO now for a mega
facility in Hornby?
That’s the big question after
the book was closed on Denton
Park on Friday.
The city council has already
delayed the $35.7
million project
by two years and
Save Denton Park
chairman Mark
Peters said he will
now aim to ensure
the area gets the
facility.
Mike Mora
“The main focus now is to assist
in selecting the location for a
facility that is certainly needed.”
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board voted
unanimously on Friday to adopt
a city council hearings panel recommendation
to not use Denton
Park as the site for the mega
facility.
Board chairman Mike Mora
said the board has asked the city
council to investigate Kyle Park
as an option, but would need to
consult with the residents again.
“We’re going to keep the momentum
rolling to get the best
result for the good people in the
south west,” Mr Mora said.
Mr Peters said the decision
means the advocacy group Save
Denton Park will be dissolved,
but he was proud of the impact
it made.
“Save Denton Park has really
come to a full-stop. We’ll wind
that up and hand over to the
new Greater Hornby Residents
Association, I will be heavily
involved in that association,” Mr
Peters said.
When the park’s future was
confirmed, he felt “relief”.
“It was quite an ecstatic moment,
me being the cynic that
I am, I was half expecting one
or two of the community board
members to throw a curve ball
from left field, and I’m thankful
that didn’t happen,” Mr Peters
said. The city council said an
additional two years was needed
to select a new location for the
mega facility. An additional
a “great result” but felt precious
time was wasted over Denton
PARKING CHANGES
City council staff have
recommended to impose 60-min
parking limits on Halswell’s
Caulfield Ave near the Longhurst
Medical Centre. Staff also
recommended to restrict parking
to 120-min and 60-min on Hamill
Rd near the medical centre.
Parking limits of 60-min have also
been proposed at Greenaway St
outside Simply Indulge Bakehaus.
The Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton
Community Board will today
decide whether to adopt the changes
or not.
Canterbury Cross
Country
This year, due to poor weather the
Primary Cross Country was done on the
postponement day. Our runners competed at
the Quarry on a nice sunny day, but on a very
muddy and challenging course.
All of the Oaklands representatives ran hard
and some of the students achieved their
goals, while some found the event tough!
Here is a summary of the results from the
Oaklands team:
Year 6 Aidan: 48th Year 7 Taylor: 16th, and
qualified for the next round of races!
Ellla: 76th Zara: 102nd Tamihana: 104th
Annabel: 107th Year 8 Noah: 38th Brianna: 113th
Well done to all of our runners!!!
Year 5/6 Basketball - the girls are off to the finals!
Congratulations to the boys’ and girls’ teams
for doing their best against schools from the
South West Zone - and a special shout out
to the girls’ team who are off to the finals.
Held recently on the basketball courts of
the Wharenui Pool complex, our year 5/6
tournament teams took on the might of
other South West zone schools.
Competition was tough with short intense
10 minute games with rolling subs.
Freshwater Frolicking
The Year 3 Hub have been investigating
- What can we do to protect habitat and
species? We visited Styx Mill Conversation
Reserve to see freshwater invertebrates in
their natural habitats.
The excitement level was through the
bus roof as we made our way to Styx Mill
Reserve. We spotted over 40 Nursery
Spider webs as we walked through the
reserve to get to our spot for freshwater
frolicking.
We made figure of eight movements using
our retrieval devices to get the insects out
of the water and then we rocked and rolled
them into our inspection trays.
The squeals of delight when we found
Regardless of the outcome, it was great to
see the students fully focused on basketball
and doing the best they could.
We are very grateful to the wonderful
parents who provided transport and
supported us at the tournament. We very
much appreciate your help.
The boys’ team finished 4th and the girls’
team finished 2nd. 1st and 2nd qualify for
the finals at Pioneer Stadium on Monday
25th June, and that is exactly where the year
water boatman, damselfly nymphs and
fish were heard throughout the reserve.
We could hardly believe that the creatures
we had been reading and writing about,
were right there in front of us!
We ended the day learning about how to
keep our waterways healthy. Disposing of
rubbish in the correct place, cleaning our
cars on the grass and not washing paint
brushes into open drains will help keep our
waterways fresh and healthy.
A huge thank you to all the parents who
helped us on the trip, especially those
who were so flexible as we negotiated the
dreadful weather last week.
5/6 girls’ team will be. Their 2nd/3rd semifinal
was a closely contested game, coming
down to the wire. The girls gave it their best
in the final against a very strong Somerfield
team.
A big thanks also goes out to Sam Iffland
(Yr 7) who was the manager of both teams
on the day. Sam manages the Thursday
Pioneer team as well as play in the Year 7/8
Friday team.
Thanks, Sam.
Worm Farm Trip
We were very lucky this week and got to visit
the eco depot where we made worm farms.
This trip aligned
really well to our Term 2 topic - sustainability,
where we have been learning about looking
after our planet through reducing, reusing
and recycling our waste.
On this trip, our instructor, taught us lots of
facts about worms. Check out some of the
things we learnt below:
- We used tiger worms in our worm farm
(Amelia)
- Worms don’t like the sun, they come out
when it rains (Zak)
- Worms dig tunnels (Alex)
- There are compost, deep soil and top soil
worms (Declan)
- If we touch worms with our dry hands it can
burn them (Max)
- Worms don’t have eyes (Sam)
- Worms are good for the compost (Sean)
- We learnt how to make a worm farm in a
bottle (Sam)
- Worms don’t like sunshine (Alex M)
- We put wet paper in our worm farms (Taylor)
- Worms can’t eat bread (Lucy)
- Worms have 5 hearts and lay 5 babies in
one egg (Max)
- They breathe through their skin (Alexis)
- They help to make compost with microbes
(Duncan)
- Worms have tiny hairs to make them move (Ivy)
Thank you very much to all the parent
helpers who made the trip possible, we hope
you all enjoyed yourselves!! There is info
going home today about how to look after
the worm farms that have been taken home!
Bullying-Free NZ Week Competition
Congratulations to Madeline Laing and Ashley White who won first prize in the Intermediate PowerPoint Category in the Bullying-Free NZ
Some relief for Riccarton residents
• By Anan Zaki
CITY COUNCIL contractors
were out doing repairs at a floodprone
Riccarton street yesterday.
Bradshaw Tce residents said
contractors were working on
clearing a drain outside number
seven and levelling out the area
near the drain to ease surface
flooding.
Last week Western News
highlighted residents complaints
about repeated delays to finish
street repairs promised by the
city council in 2010.
Resident Tony Dale held hopes
the repairs would be completed
this year but said the work on
Monday looked temporary.
“It looks like they are fixing
up the stormwater drain [near
number seven]. It’s obviously not
the start of the roadworks that
were deferred but it’s a drop in
the bucket,” he said.
Mr Dale said it appeared coverage
in last week’s Western News
had prompted the work.
Another resident, Clare Mouat,
said she was pleased to see contractors
addressing immediate
concerns around the drains and
believed it would not have been
done without the publicity.
“It just shows you the power of
the media doesn’t it?”
The city council first promised
residents to complete repairs on
the street by 2011, but have repeatedly
deferred the works, citing
the earthquakes as a reason
for reprioritising works.
The latest delay is for 2021.
City council head of transport
Richard Osborne said last week
that works would be still be completed
in 2021.
Vandals
hit Leslie
Park
•From page 1
The park was given a $144,000
turf upgrade by the city council
for the Rugby League World
Cup last year and was used as
a training ground for visiting
national teams.
The damage meant no games
were played on the field at the
weekend. The immediate future
of the ground was uncertain.
Mr Tomlinson said the rugby
league club was using the field
under restricted conditions
imposed by the city council to
prevent turf damage, and the
vandalism made an already difficult
situation worse.
“It just hammers you. We’re
following all the rules and
training as hard as possible then
you get halfwits like that,” Mr
Tomlinson said.
The club was unable to use
Leslie Park last year due to
delays in the city council’s turf
upgrades because of a wet winter
last year.
The first vandal attack last
month rendered the field unusable
for five weeks.
Fire rages, homes at risk
Readers react to delays in
street repairs at Bradshaw
Tce
Claire Cloxen – What’s
new? We have all been waiting
for potholes to be repaired. They
bung a little bit of tar in ours the
next time it rains the potholes are
back and bigger. So join the rest
of us suckers.
Jill Sanders – Our street,
Bishopsworth St is covered in
potholes, floods when it rains.
Still has the old gutters and lacks
street lighting. The council have
put in huge concrete cycle lanes
around the city, which must be
so important for their image.
Our street is so bad as are many.
Priority of the council, huh?
Graeme Brown – Easy, tell
them you want to ride your bike
along this road and presto you
will have it all relaid with a brand
new cycle lane.
Susan Gerrets – Cycleways
are the council’s mindset,
where do they get revenue from
them?
Peter Cooper – What did
you expect from a PC council
that would prefer to make the
lycra-clad happy . . . you know,
those who pay nothing towards
roading costs because they ride
their bikes.
HAD ENOUGH: Bradshaw St residents Tony Dale, Claire Mouat and Anne Dale are upset over
flooding issues in their street.
Readers react to the
metal contamination from
pork sold at New World
Halswell
Gary Knight – As the largest
NZ food retailer encompassing
New World, Pak’n Save and
Four Square, the 100 per
cent Kiwi-owned Foodstuffs
organisation, stating its social
responsibilities for Kiwi kids in
need, also a pledge to promote
healthier eating campaigns,
would suggest them as being a
very food focused entity. It was
therefore disappointing to note
the blasé attitude by Foodstuffs
South Island by lack of response
to Ministry of Primary
Industries relating to this issue
of contaminated meat products.
Many would also query the
effectiveness of quality assurance
procedures within the food
industry given the total of recalls
at 128 since 2015 denoting major
anomalies within procedures.
Within this context accolades are
extended to Ministry of Primary
Industries for actioning a full
refund and advice for medical
intervention relating to the
contaminated pork recall from
Halswell New World.
Janey Thomas – Recall notice
should include what kind of
metal. Consumers have the right
to know this – some metals are
highly toxic to humans.
Yvonne Hart – Maybe if you
only sold free range there would
not be any problems.
Alcohol ban
may be
extended
•From page 1
This was compared to 1277
instances of disorder, 275
reports of wilful damage and
200 minor assaults in 2013, the
city council said.
The roads outside Riccarton
Racecourse were also listed on
the proposals for additional
alcohol bans.
The area is currently subject
to a temporary alcohol ban
on Cup Day in Riccarton, but
police want to make the ban
permanent in order to reduce
alcohol-fulled incidents.
“The problems associated
with pre-loading typically
manifest as violence, property
damage, assaults, intimidation,
disorderly behaviour and
littering within and around the
event venue,” the report said.
The city council said there
were two instances of alcoholrelated
disorder on Cup
Day outside the Riccarton
Racecourse last year compared
to eight in 2013.
The report is set to be
received by the committee
tomorrow.
Students recognised with awards
MIDDLETON Grange School
students have been recognised
at the Duke of Edinburgh
Awards.
Deputy Mayor Andrew
Turner presented the Duke of
Edinburgh International Award
to eight recipients from the
school in front of parents and
school principals, in the council
chambers, on June 29.
The Duke of Edinburgh
International Award is a global
framework for non-formal
education, which challenges
young people to dream big,
celebrate their achievements and
make a difference in the world.
They do this through developing
transferable skills, increasing
their fitness, cultivating a sense
of adventure and volunteering
in their community. The award
helps young people to find their
purpose, passion and place in the
world.
This opportunity gave the
Cr Turner the opportunity to
see first-hand the many benefits
of the award and congratulate
each individual on their
achievement.
The other recipients were
from Linwood College, Catholic
Cathedral College and Marian
College.
Over the past two years all
recipients have worked with the
Joshua Foundation, the Duke of
Edinburgh Operating Authority
in Christchurch.
RECOGNISED: Duke of Edinburgh Award recipients from Middleton Grange School.
Each participant was required
to develop new skills, undertake
an adventurous journey, become
physically active and serve
within the community. There
was one bronze award, 23 silver
awards and seven gold award
recipients.
Cr Turner acknowledged the
recipients’ success in completing
the bronze, silver and gold
awards, and said this was an
outstanding accomplishment for
our young Cantabrians.
“I congratulate each of the
recipients for this wonderful
achievement.
“I encourage you all to wear
your Duke of Edinburgh Hillary
Award pin badge with pride, as
a well-deserved recognition for
this special accomplishment.
“This award shows you have
the ability to do whatever you set
your mind to … whether that be
academically, on the sports field,
or in our community.”
Cr Turner also thanked
Chris Allan from the Joshua
Foundation for giving up this
time to support the community,
in particular the younger
generation.
He said that Mr Allan has a
real passion for the young people
in Christchurch and is helping to
develop resilient young leaders in
the face of adversity.
WESTERN NEWS
Baking a
thank you
for police
A GROUP of Villa Maria College
students paid a visit to the central
police station last week to give
them some homemade baking.
Sixteen-year-old students Sophie
Buchanan, Georgia Knowles,
Alice Twaddell, and Sarah Scarlett,
15, said they wanted to show
their appreciation to those who
keep the community safe.
College head of faculty for technology
Prudence Reveley said the
students delivered more than 20
trays of cakes, slices, scones and
other varieties of baking to police
staff.
The girls were taking part of a
school wide project to show acts
of kindness to the community.
Every student at the school brainstormed
initiatives that included
care packages for the homeless,
donations for the SPCA, helping
with supplies for its sister school
in Tonga, Takuilau College and
a morning tea for construction
workers on site at the college.
“It was a wonderful experience
for the girls to be able to thank
those police staff in person and
offer them some baking. The girls
were then surprised by receiving
a tour of the new city station and
informative talks by various officers
about their roles in protecting
our city,” Ms Reveley said.
100 games for the club
• By Jacob Page
DENE RYAN feels like his
100th open grade game for High
School Old Boys has been a long
time coming.
After 93 games for the division
three team and seven for the
HSOB Classics team, the lock
has hit triple figures.
“I’ve been working away at this
since my first game in 2006, so
it’s taken me a while.”
The tenured lock has always
been a HSOB club man, having
first played under-eights for the
club in 1991.
A stint playing second XV
rugby at Christchurch Boys’
High School, some time away
from the game and living abroad
have all impacted the 34-yearold’s
playing days.
“I got roped back in after
I came home from overseas
and, for me, it’s been the social
element which has kept me
involved,” he said.
“It’s good for the body as
literally I do nothing (in the
off-season) so this is something
I can do to help with the fitness
side of things.”
Ryan, who lives in Halswell,
said while it may not be the top
flight of club rugby, he still goes
out there to earn victory.
“Doesn’t everybody, regardless
of ability, go out there to win?
That’s certainly me.”
Ryan said while he has a wife
who would like him to hang up
the boots, he can see himself
playing to 40. “It’s fun, I enjoy
the games and the social aspect,”
he said. “There’s one guy who
I’ve played the game with for
22 years and that sort of thing
becomes special.”
Future Paralympians get
chance to play boccia
• By Jacob Page
BOCCIA HAS been on
centre-stage at the Bishopdale
YMCA during the Canterbury
primary and intermediate school
championships.
Boccia is a Paralympic sport
that draws inspiration from
bocce, boules and pentaque.
The championships were open
to all students from the Canterbury
region with a physical
disability.
Ten primary and intermediate
school students participated in
Boccia at the event. There were
three rounds of competition –
the boys throw, girls throw and
an overall championship round.
Amber Proudfoot from St Peter’s
School won the girls throw
and Caleb Wright from Westburn
School won the boys throw.
Caleb also won the overall boccia
championship award.
Halberg Foundation senior
adviser Justin Muschamp ran
the event, with assistance from
school prefects from Riccarton
High who volunteered on the
day. The championships are also
an opportunity for Cantabrians
to join the Canterbury team at
the Halberg Games, a national
three-day sports competition for
physically disabled young people
from October 5-7 at King’s College,
Auckland.
The championships will be
held on August 23 at the Cashmere
High School gym.
No need to get wound up, Ilam
Watchmakers are here to help
Geoff and Michelle Butler started Ilam
Watchmakers on the corner of Waimari
and Maidstone Road back in 2001 and in
all that time, this family business has been
too busy to look back.
However, this year is full of milestones
for them. Geoff is celebrating 40 years since
he entered the trade as an apprentice, and
they have just successfully renovated and
repaired the historic Arts Centre clock,
which has been out of action for some time.
“We had to bring part of it back to the
workshop, give it a complete overhaul,
service and reassemble it,” explains Geoff.
Now, the clock is working fine and back in
its rightful place, symbolising yet another
step in Christchurch’s road to post-earthquake
recovery.
However, the team at Ilam Watchmakers
is usually more down-to-earth, providing a
service for the public and jewellers across
New Zealand. They carry out all kinds of
repairs and servicing on watches from replacing
a battery in budget-friendly fashion
watch to taking care of Rolex, Omega and
other higher end watches worth thousands
of dollars. Every customer gets the same
friendly service because the team knows
that each timepiece means something to
Natural
the owner. They also sell watches including
Boccia Titanium, Citizen, Olympic, colourful
Ice-Watch, Pulsar, Casio Sports watches,
and the current hot-fashion item – pocket
watches, in this case by the prestigious firm
CWEA - More
than just a course!
The WEA opposite the Christchurch Art
Gallery on Gloucester St, has been offering
affordable adult education for over 100
years. A recent survey of participants and
tutors shows that it is about more than just
the courses it runs. Kazuko who teaches
Japanese arts and culture says “It’s my home
away from home, a home of learning”. The
homely feel and warm welcome you get
on stepping through the door indicate an
inclusive, caring culture - values which
have long been held high at the WEA. With
discussion clubs like “The Thinkers Group”,
courses on Women’s Suffrage and Armchair
travel as well as regular speaker slots called
“The Social Issues Soap Box”, a community
of learners are being encouraged to explore,
analyze and expand their horizons.
As our emerging city seeks to position
itself as progressive and forward thinking it
is clear that this centrally located education
hub has a key role to play: it gives us space
to reflect on, learn about and challenge the
world we see around us - whilst nurturing
FREE digital
media course,
with NCEA built in
For those looking for a role that
combines artistic and digital talents, then
this outstanding, FREE, entry level course
has just been announced by local Training
Provider Trainme, for those wishing
to pursue animation, graphic design,
photography or digital media as a career.
The course covers introduction to
multi-media techniques such as video
production, drawing, animation and
photography. Students will create their own
design concepts and collaborate with other
students on creative projects.
This course is FREE to students aged 16
to 19 and they only have to have NCEA 1
to join. Students without NCEA 1 can be
admitted, if they show artistic or digital
aptitude.
“Many feel that school is not working for
them or they left without qualifications,”
says Rhys Pollard, Marketer with tertiary
educator Trainme. “While not necessarily
academically minded, they do have artistic
talents and are very much into digital
technology.”
“This FREE six-month Trainme course,
combines these in a very hands-on,
WESTERN NEWS
practical way, giving them an intro into
various digital media. This way, they can
decide which direction to pursue as their
career focus.”
“As an NZQA approved programme,
NCEA credits are built in, so if they apply
themselves, they can graduate with a New
Zealand Certificate in Arts and Design
Level 2, as well as gaining credits towards
NCEA level 1 or 2,” says Pollard.
“NCEA results will depend on how many
credits they bring to the course to start
with, but as it’s a fun subject, it won’t feel
like school at all.”
Successful graduates from this
programme could pathway into higher
study in media arts, which could include
graphic design, video production,
photography or one of the many emerging
digital-based careers. Places are limited, so
students are encouraged to apply as soon as
they can.
REAL ESTATE
BIG house, BIG future - 5-6 bedrooms
Selling “As is - Where is”
266 Mt Pleasant Road, Mt Pleasant
Auction: Thursday 26th July 12.00pm at Grenadier House, 98 Moorhouse Ave (Unless sold prior)
5 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 1 dining room | 2 car-garage | 6 off-street parks | Listing #FM5441
After many years of deliberating, the vendors
have made the difficult decision and decided
to walk away from their earthquake damaged
home. Make no mistake, this home will be SOLD
on or before Auction day....and some would say
“Their loss could be your gain”.
The floor plan features an open plan kitchen,
dining, living which interconnects with another
lounge. Sliding doors open out to the expansive
upstairs deck. 5-6 bedrooms on offer with 2
bathrooms and 3 toilets. This north-west facing
home has been built for the views and the sun.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a builder to
renew this as a future family home or even a rental
investment for professionals who will appreciate
the Mt Pleasant and surrounding environment.
Beautifully positioned on the Mt Pleasant hill
to enjoy stunning views of the Southern Alps
and the Kaikoura’s, the Estuary and the Pacific
Ocean. Large outdoor deck to enjoy the view or
sit in the spa pool with a double lockup garage
underneath. The home has two heat pumps to
keep you warm in winter plus a security system
for ‘peace of mind’.
Zoned for Mt Pleasant School and close to
Ferrymead shops and restaurants with Sumner
beach a short 10 minutes’ or so drive away.
Auction: Thursday 26th July 12.00pm at
Grenadier House, 98 Moorhouse Ave (Unless
sold prior).
