16 Wednesday July 11 2018 Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi News Local News Now SELWYN TIMES Fire rages, homes at risk Trust brings the community together Lincoln Envirotown trustee Sue Jarvis writes about the Lincoln Envirotown Trust IN 2007 the Lincoln Envirotown Trust, after consulting widely, decided to hold a community meeting for the Lincoln community to put together a community environmental action plan. About 45 people turned up and came up with many ideas as well as adopting various sections of the plan. This original plan, together with many other ideas, has guided how LET has worked with and assisted the community to bring about Lincoln Envirotown. Since then, having achieved so much, and definitely not run out of ideas (just think of the ever increasing issue of plastic pollution) LET has become involved in activities and communities Selwyn wide. LET is now planning an event to discuss the environmental future of the whole of Selwyn and so we invite people of all ages to come and consider Selwyn’s Environment – What is our Future? This will be held July 22 at the Lincoln Bowling Club, which is adjacent to Lincoln Event Centre. There will be speakers, displays and refreshments. So please drop in between 1pm and 4pm and join in generating and discussing ideas on how our community can create a sustainable future for the district at the family friendly event. All the feedback generated will form the basis of a Lincoln Envirotown Trust planning meeting later in the year, where we will look at how we can help Selwyn communities implement new projects encouraging environmental sustainability and community strength. Prior to the event tell us the issues that are important to you by completing our 15 second survey. This can be found on Lincoln Envirotown’s website, Facebook page or Eventbrite: https://whatisourfuture.eventbrite.co.nz. •If you are unable to attend the meeting but would still like to make suggestions then send an email to projectmanagerlet@gmail. com or phone Dave on 423 0445. HELPING OUT: Students from University of Florida with some locals showing off with the empty plant pots. Florida students help out in Lincoln Sue Jarvis also writes about students from Florida helping out in Lincoln STUDENTS from Florida, with Mark Hostetler and Meryl Klein, along with a number of locals did an amazing job planting about 400 native plants at the Mahoe Reserve Native plant re-vegetation project recently. Thanks to everyone who helped, especially to Lincoln Envirotown members and the Mahoe Management committee for all their organisation behind the scenes. Also to Colin Meurk for his usual expert demonstration. While we were there we found a young skink so he (or she – how do you tell with skinks?) was carefully put into our new hedgehog-proof lizard enclosure. We are hoping that our efforts to recreate the native plant community that would have been there before humans arrived will also provide a good habitat for native animals – so this is a great sign. Hedgehogs are predators on skinks and have been found, using tracking tunnels, to be common at the reserve. Students from Florida have been visiting the Mahoe Reserve in Lincoln every year for about 10 years to help us. 100% CapItal GaIn to the ResIDent GATHERING: Community members discussing ideas for the first Lincoln Envirotown Trust action plan in June, 2007. $1,000 FullY ReFunDable DeposIt SAFE: A baby skink was placed in a hedgehog-proof enclosure. neW shoW hoMe open MonDaY to FRIDaY 10am to 2pm E S T A T E Phone. 03 421 7796 | Email. sales@woodcroftestate.co.nz WOODCROFT WAY, 28 KENDON DRIVE, ROLLESTON, CANTERBURY Rolleston’s neW ReGIsteReD RetIReMent vIllaGe • Initial weekly fee of $75 includes rates & full insurance • Gated community and emergency call button in each villa • Two & three bedroom villas with single/double garage from $400,000 • On Site Manager and a Pavilion and Bowling Green • Weekend viewing by appointment • Call Corinne 021 821 683 www.manorgroup.co.nz
