SELWYN TIMES Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi Wednesday [Edition July 11 datE] 2018 31 3 Backyard Critters continuing education Moth at the window Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us. Check out the full list of invertebrates found at http://naturewatch.org.nz/projects/ backyard-biodiversity-bugs-in-lincoln IN MID-JUNE a common forest looper, pseudocoremia suavis, an endemic species found throughout New Zealand, was attracted to my window at night. Adults have a wingspan of 26-34mm and their forewings have variable patterns of light and dark brown. The hind wings are pale yellow in colour. Males have a longer and thinner abdomen that protrudes past the wings when resting. Moths feed on flower nectar and honeydew excreted by scale insects. Oval, pale green eggs are laid on vegetation but turn red after about three days. The larvae feed on a range of species, including southern beech, kanuka, podocarps, gorse, yew, pine and douglas fir. Significant defoliation sometimes occurs on douglas fir and radiata pine. Younger caterpillars feeding on exotic conifers make the needles droop or die, giving a scorched reddy-brown appearance. When disturbed or attacked by insect predators, the larvae can drop down on threads of silk. They usually pupate on the ground under litter, dead wood or stones, but sometimes in branches of trees. Large populations can collapse when infected by a virus. Thirteen parasitoids have been recorded from this species. Christchurch School of Music The Christchurch School of Music is a family-oriented community aimed at providing quality music education in and around Christchurch. The school has been an important part of the Christchurch music education scene for 62 years so why not come along and join us? CSM is a not-for-profit organisation with a strong focus on community. From ages 2 to 92 we have something for everyone. On a Saturday morning the whole family can find something to suit. For the young ones there are pre-school and junior school classes, “Take Off with Music”, 41/2 year olds can start on Suzuki strings and at 6 the recorder is a great instrument to learn Older children and adults may opt for group or individual lessons on a specific instrument (including voice). With six orchestras, two concert bands, a Big Band, a jazz combo, 6 wind ensembles, rock bands, two choirs, chamber groups, a samba band and a guitar ensemble there is an ensemble to suit all levels and all ages. The UC Christchurch Youth Orchestra, CSM’s top orchestra, generously sponsored by the University of Canterbury Foundation, has an exciting concert series throughout the year. The School also runs an extensive Outreach programme in local schools incorporating a band programme, ukulele, recorder and percussion teaching. If affordability is an issue, CSM may be able to offer a discount through funding provided by the Rata Foundation. Enrolments are open for Semester 2 so please contact us via our website www. csm.org.nz and let us start you on a musical journey that will bring pleasure for a lifetime.
